anyone working on chinese iPhoneys? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im sure im not the only one who would LOVE to have a brand new iPhone for its minimalist aesthetics, plus all the slick cases and docks and such out there, but successfully running the nerd-core Android OS.
now im no software dev, so ive been looking around at Chinese iPhoneys trying to find one that runs ICS, to my dismay. i have found a few solid looking alternatives which are running (i believe) MIUI'd versions of 2.2.
so what im getting at here is, is there anything going on for these devices? from the looks of it they can be had for under $150.

lots of looks but no replies.
could there be other interested parties? i'd chip in for a chinese iphone for the devs

Dell Venue vs Dell Venue Pro

Lets say the Dell Venue does come out.. as stated
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gadgetrev...ell-venue-launching-in-korea-this-month/20811
We do get our DVP as notified....
Whats the chance you wonderful Android Chefs out there could cook up an 2.2 Android ROM based on teh Dell Venue, that would work on the Dell Venue Pro, and still let us use our keyboard.. (DLL off Motorola Charm or Droid Pro maybe..?)
Just thinking out loud..
Please lets not start this "i want android" crap! If you want an android phone why not just buy one in the first place?
Maybe because he prefers Android with a Keyboard?
You probably prefer WP7, but Since Dell is releasing the Venue pro with Android there's a good chance the DVP will be able to run it too...
It's still XDA, cooking up roms is the one reason why we're here

Epic 4G, G2, Droid Pro, rumoured Shift 4G - tons of options for android keyboard devices. No need to clutter the forum with the inevitable "WP7 is crap, android is better" BS that is in practically every other forum.
Well,
I'm with you, no need to clutter, but if you're in love with the look of the DVP but need the keyboard, that's the best option you have...
Guess making a sub-forum for this questions makes best for both worlds?
with the consensus android is a nice addition but definitely not needed. I am much happier with wp7
I ask because I LOVE the DVP form factor.. and I have three HUGE issues with WP7.
Tethering.. I HAVE to have a phone that tethers. Keeping two lines (one DVP and one my Dash3G) is BS.
Storage.. Why should I keep a thumb drive around when I have a phone with 8-32GB of storage ?
Customizing some basic things. Like not having all my pictures in the picture hub, ALL my facebook contacts in my People hub.. If I have some videos or pictures of a personal nature I would like a way to hide them from being easily seen in my hub should I want to show some less personal pictures to friends, etc..
That said, I personally am not a fan of Android.. and with my time with HD7 I found that I really like WP7 the 99% of the time I am using if for a phone, or texting, etc..
Personally I am seeing a lot of what WM7 could have been in andriod when it comes to customizations and other features. Heck looke at HTC sense on 6.5.3 and HTC sense on the EVO 4G. They arent that much different, heck if WM6.5 had added more active widgets and such, to a PRODUCTION phone it may not have been given such a bad rep. Look at the 3VO and other cooked ROMS here. A LOT of them are better than iOS or any Andriod I have used, but a lot of those features were never added to a production phone.
I digress.. when it comes to andriod.. the new Netfront UI for andriod looks awesome. There are also a ton of apps that simply arent being done for WP7 yet. So.. Long story short... I like personalizing and customizing my phone. I may get over that with WP7.. I may not. Be great if I had an option to play with a Andriod ROM on my DVP, and then go back to WP7 and so forth. Even be cooler if I had the ability to dual boot. But I doubt highly with the way WP7 deals with the SD cards that would be possible.
In any case not trying to get into a WM6 vs Andriod vs WP7 which is better conversation.. they all have thier pluses and minuses. Just curious if anyone thinks it would be possible to put andriod on a DVP should the need arise.
Or even better.. anyone try putting a WM6.5.3 ROM on a WP7 yet? I havent checked..

Would that be the one that fits in my hand perfectly.. and has a slide out portrait keyboard.. and a nice vibrant screen.. ? OR the fragile huge phone with no keyboard.
I guess I could get a new tilt2.. but it doesnt have a portait keyboard and a smaller darker screen.
The whole reason for this thread.. is the DVP is a UNIQUE form factor.. and one of the most beautiful phones I have ever owned. If they made it with WM6.5.3 it would be my first choice. But since they don't make it that way.. it would be awesome to have a Energy 6.5.3 Rom for the DVP Personally thats my favorite UI to date.

Agreed.. they are both good in thier own way.
Im starting to like WP7.. its just so different.
As I mentioned, personally I like WM6.5.3 but know I am in the minority there..
I was praying and crossing my fingers the HTC Throphy (The mock up from last year and not the WP7 phone) that would come out before WP7 launched. As that looked to be my ideal phone.
I only started this thread because if the Venue and Venue Pro ar the same hardware, I wouldn't mind trying Android on my DVP (and mybe play witht he Netfront UI and other things) and possibly switching back to WP7.
Although as I mentioned.. I would gladly pay if someone could find a way to boot the Latest WM6.x Energy Rom onto my DVP.. I would be in heaven then.
Engadget Hands-on with the Dell Venue:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/23/dell-venue-launched-in-hong-kong-we-go-hands-on/
Id pay some good money to see android on the dell venue pro. I like windows phone 7 but the OS is still a bit young.. there's certain things I like better on android and no im not trying to cause a debate or argument.. im just sayin, if the dell venue comes out, how hard would it be to make that compatible with the dvp..I love my dvp by the way, especially the slide out keyboard
It would be great if WP7 and Android can be run on Dell Venue and DVP.
Anyone try yet? Or has anyone gotten the ROM off a Dell Venue?
bump, I'd like to see this get done, and I'd pay some good money for it too!
Bump... Just wondering if anyone has rooted the Venue and figured a way to install on the DVP yet..?
I've started a Bounty on Android on the DVP here:

Android on Nokia N9?

So the Nokia N9 is a beautiful peace of kit and Meego looks nice, but how much better would some ice cream sandwich be on that thing?
How hackable will the N9 be? I guess the main thing is, will anyone have one? Seeing as its not being released in a lot of places I can see it being hard to get a hold of...
I think that the nokia n9 is a nice phone and I do not understand why nokia do not use Android for its smartphone

It's simple, because Nokia has chosen Windows Phone as it main mobile OS.
As to why Nokia pick Windows over Android, it's simple too. Microsoft needs a great hardware partner to win, and Nokia needs a decent OS to survive. They need each other, and this situation gave Nokia lot of say and control in their hardware and future Windows Phone development. While Android is great, Android doesn't need Nokia and Nokia wouldn't stand a chance in the already super crowded Android ecosystem.
But anyway, the N9/Lumia800 is definitely the most beautiful smartphone I have seen in the last few years. The button-less N9 makes an ideal candidate for ICS. However, it's too expensive at the moment...

I already own what for me is the most beautiful Android phone - Xperia Arc. Just bought N9 yesterday as I couldn't resist not owning such a beautiful loooooking device that is also getting rave reviews.
N9 is just not a good looking device, it feels so f'in right in the hand. The screen, the feel all feel perfectly balanced. It makes my Arc look like a POS. While I love MeeGo so far, I still have lot of learning but frankly, Android messed me up so much that I feel it's hard to survive with other mobile OS if you know to use Android well.
I hope some genius out there can get ICS running on this beauty. Or, I hope Samsung shamelessly copies Nokia design as they are famous copy-cats!
yeah, when i saw buttonless n9 i immediately think about ics, they are perfect for each orthers, i used to be nokia fan, hope sone dev can make isc run on n9
Nokia e7 is my dream machine. With android of course. Or w7 so It can get eventually get android

I would be down for a Nokia N9 if there was a crew like CM that would try to port android on to it. By realistically I don't think that will happen, phone's not available in the US, CAN, or UK. And getting it off ebay is roughly $650, but I just might get it, sigh...
After reading up on the N9 I couldn't resist and got one. I had the Sony Arc as well and I been with Nokia until they messed up with the n97. But the N9 is another monster, really sleek design the OS is beautiful and colors on the screen really jumps. The black color looks really vivid and nice. I am now waiting for someone to hack android or can port android apps to the N9.
I would buy an n9 if someone ported ICS... just too nice a piece of kit to not own
Def a pretty phone. Android should really be present.
i will get n9, if someone port ics on it.
i'm working in high tech store in Italy and officially the N9 is not sold there, but we got one in the shop and is amazing; i really fell in love with that phone (you can never forget your first love )
i do want to buy it for myself, but what it bothers me is the lack of possible applications to install on the phone. an android porting on that device will be amazing.
is there a crazy guy that has tried an android porting on that device before?
also the original meego software looks pretty well and hands on runs smoothly and seems not having trouble at all, but i had only a quick 5 minutes test on the phone. what worries me is that the phone will left alone with no further support because it's the only one with meego software.
already done look at this video with meego operating 5 different OS search nokia on google and u will the link
Yeah I had SGS2 and got an N9 instead, mainly BECAUSE of the OS.
Android is slow on appswitching (at least the versions Ive run, where youd have to either exit the app, open task manager, then select from a list of icons, or you could hold the menubutton for a bit, then select an app from a list of icons).
ICS might be different, I have no idea how taskswitching is done on it.
However, I will say that the N9 rocks ass and it would be fun to dualboot ICS/Harmattan.
Also, to the above poster, its not allready done. A chinese fake version of the N9 with a 3.8" resistive touchscreen, dualsim and 1.3mp camera can, though. Also it comes with porn and talking tomcat. So theres that.
Just had to throw my hat into the ring. I am ridiculously tempted to purchase the N9. Damn thing is just too attractive.
I was really hoping for some community love but that may just be due to my HD2. Leo users have been Spoilt Rotten.
I see even a hint of android development and caution is out the window. Take my money.
Man I hope they boot leg the E7!

In the mean time i got an N9 for christmas, and the MeeGo OS built in is working pretty good, ha some features that i really love, like completely unified address book and unified messaging system, which slows me to modify the device.
On the other side, the are really few apps developed for meego os, that really pushes me to switch to another OS...
Mmm hard choice...
Awerellwv I bring your attention to Alien Dalvik(google it I cant post links)
Running android apps at native speed seems to negate the lack of apps issue. Assuming it all works as planned.
I've convinced myself I want an N9. Possibly just because that Cyan model looks fantastic. I would really love to see ongoing android development though, Knowing the device would keep up with the times is a big deal.
Now to just find the right price. If you really want to switch phones(and you have a cyan N9) I would be interested.

White 64GB N9
I have had since a few days the latest white 64GB version of the N9 and I must say, it's quite an incredible device!
I can't even imagine why Nokia went the WP7 way (beside some fresh cash certainly paid by M$).
Of course, there are still some functions & details missing and some things to iron out with Meego (like with WP7), but it's a very stable and fast OS (I'm impressed how fast Opera is loading!). I must add that it's still loaded with the 10.2011.34 Harmattan version, the latest 20.2011.40 hasn't yet been released for this specific model.
I just love the 3 screens idea, especially the "running tasks" screen, where you have access to all of the running apps and can either switch to the wanted one or close it/them. Why is it so complicated for other OS's to implement such a simple and easily accessible task manager??
The only downside I can see is the lack of applications. Only the true Linux developers will continue porting apps to this wonderful smartphone, and if we could get android applications to run on it, it would be great. And when I say run on it, it's preferably run on Meego, using Alien Dalvik or whatever other way.
If this is not possible, of course dual booting or ICS alone would be a solution, although I like the fact we're running an almost pure Linux/Debian machine, with an interesting touchscreen interface.
Hopefully Nokia will keep reading all of the N9 dedicated forums and will keep a Meego (or whatever it will be named in the future) branch of handsets, and of course supporting it/us.

Differences bwtween 10.1, 8.9, and 7+

I just got my GT 7.0 Plus for Christmas and absolutely love it. I really like the compact 7" design and it will fit my needs perfectly. Now that my wife has played with it, she wants one too, but bigger. She is considering the 8.9" or 10". Since they are both the same price right now, she is leaning towards the 10".
What are the differences between the 3 tabs? From what I can tell the 10.1 and 8.9 are a little older and have Android 3.1 while my 7.0+ has 3.2. How much difference is there in the 2 OS versions?
I also see that my 7.0+ has the Samsung Exynos™ 2x1.2GHz processor. What is in the 8.9 and 10.1? Is it dual core?
Any other differences worth mentioning?
Keep in mind this is for my wife and she will not be rooting or modding it... She just needs something that is stable and just works.
I realise that this is a Gtab forum and I might possible get flamed for this, but here I go anyway
If your wife wants something that will be stable and will just work, without any tinkering or rooting or anything, and if she wants the tablet mostly for watching video, surfing the net, checking mail, playing some games etc. I'd recommend an iPad over the Gtab.
Why?
I'm absolutely in love with my Galaxy Tab, but I took the time to learn about it and tweak it. Hell, I scout these forums whenever I can to find some new tricks or tweaks. After it's tweaked, I'd never change it for an iPad, but if you're staying at stock, right now iPad is much smoother and overall a much better user experience - this may change in a few months when the official ICS comes out, but we can't be sure about that yet.
Why is she so averse against moding or rooting it? It's easy to learn and it can make the tab a whole different experience then remaining at official stock. Even if you don't want the "unstable" custom ROM (I'm writing in parenthesis since I haven't seen an unstable custom ROM here yet), you could go for a newer version of stock ROMs, or for CM9 when it comes out, those will most probably be as stable as the official stock, but still be faster/better then the one you get from Samsung if you wait for the official update.
There is practically no danger in rooting and moding your tablet, if you read the instructions and don't mess with stuff you don't understand, and there are many good guides around. And if you don't like it, you can still return everything back to the way it was through backups, no harm done.
As for the difference between devices, there are many reviews explaining just that around, google them
Heres one for technical specs, detailing differences between different tabs and galaxy note: http://socialcompare.com/en/comparison/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-vs-8-9-vs-7-inch
[Edit] You can also move the list items around or add extra items to the comparison list in the link, if you want to compare your 8.9 to any other devices.
She is not averse to modding or rooting, but if it's not a stable release it causes more problems for me. She got her Infuse 4G right after it came out and I flashed a couple of not so stable roms and she hated them. It's fine now since the talented devs have released new stuff, but I have my own tablet and droid phone to keep running smooth, so I don't want to have to worry about hers too. As long as the stock rom will make her happy, I will leave it at that. But if there are roms that would make it better, she won't mind me modding it, so long as they are stable roms (which sounds like that won't be an issue).
One of the things she liked about mine was the screen shot button. I assume that's also there on the 8.9 and 10.1?
And the iPad is out. I absolutely hate Apple products (mostly due to iTunes) and will never own another one. We both had iPhones and neither one of us would ever go back. I have her trained to hate Apple as well.

Haha, I have the feeling that we'd get along well
If the only problem keeping her from modding is stable releases, then there's no problem at all .
Yes, the screenshot button is part of HC's standard and every ROM I've seen till now has it (heard there is a way to disable it though, but I like it there ).
Are you thinking about the Wi-Fi only (7510) or about the 3G (7500) tablet? The 7500 is a bit more limited when it comes to different ROMs, as there are only 3 floating around right now, CM9 is currently being made for 7510 etc.
The 3G roms are Overcome, Ganbarou and BinDroid. I've tried BinDroid and Overcome (stayed on Overcome because the theme on BinDroid started to seem a bit too intrusive for my tasted after a few days) and they were both really stable. I don't think I've ever had any problems with any of them (I might have gotten a FC here and there, but nothing that I'd remember, nothing in the last week or so, and definitely nothing I couldn't have gotten on stock ROM).
For 7510, everyone recommends Task650's Galaxy Task, but I can't speak from personal experience as I need my tabs 3G connection. Some are saying that v8 is better then v9 or v10, but you should look in that thread or ask someone else to make sure.
As for the kernel, Pershoot's OC kernel is the undisputed champion - it allows you to OC, push extra modules (NTFS for instance) and stuff like that.
The Overcome experience also has a really nice guide to follow if you want to make sure you don't do something wrong (though it sounds like you know what you're doing), or if you want your wife to learn how to flash her tablet herself
I'll be getting the WiFi version only. She has an AT&T 4G phone and I have a Verizon 4GLTE phone and both have tethering enabled. So between the two of us, we almost always have a fast connection when away from WiFi. It sounds like either of the larger tablets would be a good fit for her. We might go to BB this evening so she can play with both before I order one.
The Task650 Rom looks pretty nice. Might have to flash that one for her to try.
Thanks for all the help guys!
10.1 and 8.9 are similar
Its just about the size
I have a 10.1 stock with ADWlauncher Ex and everything is smooth and stable.
A good point to consider would also be the available ROMs/tweaks/developers/accessories. I myself like the big screen, so I wouldn't go for the 8.9, even though that one is easier to handle with one hand only (you can actually hold it on one side, while I usually hold my tab in the middle with one hand, similar to how I would hold an open book).
Some places also offer testing devices, so maybe you could get one of those for a few days to see which one suits your needs better?

I think later on will be also with 7.7.. CMIIW..
I have the wifi tab, but after rooting and installing Task with the pershoot kernel, I also added the adhoc tethering hack and can now use my tab with my phone....
Best of both worlds without another data plan issue.
I went ahead and ordered the 10.1, should be here this week. And I have wifi tethering enabled on both of our phones, so the wifi version works just fine. Thanks for all the input!

Awesome and a great choice. I've tried both In Paris V5 and GalaxyTask V10 on my GTab (2nd one mind you...sold my 1st one like an idiot and it was a 32 gig but now I'm back with a 16gig)
I've been looking for a good tab to get the gf around vday and I keep coming back to wanting to get her the Gtab.
Numerous stable roms, good support, lots of accessories, and ICS/CM9 right around the corner.
I think you and your wife will be very happy with it. Either of Galaxy/Phantom's ROMs are about as stable as you can get, just depends on if you want 3.1 or 3.2. With 3.2 Galaxytask you can flash b00sted's ICS theme, which is a very nice simplistic theme.
ETA: As for cases, I used the Gumdrop cases. Otterbox doesn't make any for the 10.1 and have no plans to, (which to me is stupid) but with that said, my Gumdrop cases have been on par or better than any Otterbox defender cases I have tried for other gadgets. Like the Defender cases, they do add a bit of size and weight but honestly I feel so much more confident in the robust nature of the tab with their cases on. Now if I could just find a car dock that would work with the case.

Is HTC Sense *that* bad?

So i saw the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIJ3Hi6AtYw&feature=player_embedded
Im still on an older version on my TP2 6.5 platform. I like what it does, tho it does run kinda slow on this phone. Looking at the new version on Sensation+ it looks pretty nice imo, especially the lock screen.. But ive not used it myself.
Is Sense really that bad? Would plain ICS run better? Skin wise i dont care much for ICS.. But looking for opinions on how it runs.
No I don't agree I am using HTC Sensation for a year now and I just love it, its very fast, I have no problem with it and I am waiting for the ICS update
Sense is one of the better OEM skins out there in my opinion. But its really personal opinion. Speed and relibility arent really any issue anymore, all phones should be snappy and almost instant. The sense vs "vanilla" android experience is based on preference. I recommend checking out all phones before buying them to see if you like the look and feel to the phone. Also making sure it can be rooted is a plus

[Q] Budget Android device with Development Support?

Hi guys! Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Looking for a budget and by budget i mean something thats cheap and cheerful and does the job for facebook games. This is for a friend of mine basically and I have looked at the phones hes interested in so far but I cant find any that have a development base out there.
Want something that can be upgraded or alternative roms placed on it should he get bored of it. As thus far I've only seen some devices out there on 4.4.2 and would like one that could be upgraded to 4.4.4 or even 5 when it gets released.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
