Purchased a brand new EVO 3D off a guy on craigslist who swore it was all good. Called Sprint only to find out it has been reported as Lost or Stolen.
Guy of course will not return my calls now. What I can't believe is I asked if I could return the phone to Sprint so they can handle it, if it was stolen to return to the original owner or if reported lost it can now be found. They simply have no policy in place that allows for this.
So I'm basically screwed and have to try my luck selling a bad ESN phone on ebay (of course I will clearly list it as BAD ESN).

Maybe try calling back and talking to another associate. Or taking it to a local Sprint store. Or posting an ad somewhere, or with the local police department.
What an honorable thing to do though! I hope if I ever lose a phone, someone like you finds it.
That sucks bro, i know you can flag bad esn phones to metro pcs and cricket so you can market that in your eBay ad and still get top dollar for the phone. Best thing you can do in the future is have the seller meet you at Sprint saying you won't pay till its activated on your account or at least until the Sprint store confirms that it has a clean esn

You should have called Sprint while in front of the guy and asked the rep if the phone was good. They will tell you if it has a good ESN or bad. When I bought my 4G, I called them right in front of the guy I bought it from. Just a FYI from now on.
Edit: I guess that only works if you meet them to pick it up. I would never buy something off Craigs List any other way. The few times I have purchased something from someone on Craigs, I met them in person.

I got a call back from Sprint to ask about my experience with the representative (who tried everything to help me, even told me about the buyback program that I could try) and I asked again and was told unfortunately they simply have no procedure/policy in place for such a thing.
They basically just take it as a loss and thank you I appreciate that. I would love if I lost my phone that someone would try to return it too so I tried doing right by whoever had the phone stolen or lost. I believe in Karma, the bastard who ripped me off will get his dues!

Yeah, I think I would talk to the police and give them a copy of the CL ad (if you have it) and the guys number. You might never get your money back, but maybe you can get him arrested.
Or you could try to trace the number, get his address and open up a can of whip-ass on him. It's not like he will report you to the police. "Yeah, I sold this guy some stolen stuff and he assaulted me." LOL
Google reverse phone lookup. You might be able to get their address from the number like others said. That sucks though..
Miami here...and add me to the Flash Mob!!... To the FBI if reading this: its a joke calm down lol
You guys are awesome. I'm in Louisiana and if I wasnt so far away you could have added me to the list also. Nothing more I hate than a thief and a liar.

Thanks everyone for the support! I really appreciate it. Turns out he was using a textfree service number so no luck there; not that I was going to confront him. Rather lose some money then the possibility of the guy carrying a weapon and using it against me.
It is MIAMI, crazy fools out here!
Thanks again for all the kind support though guys, I feel a lot better and I already managed to sell the phone on ebay. Made sure buyer understood Sprint would not activate it and he is none the less happy with his purchase.
What a bummer man, I'm sorry that happened to you. I use Craigslist all the time to buy and sell phones. Never had s problem yet but I always get the esn before ill even meet the person. But for sure you can flash it to metro pcs and sell it that way. I'm in Detroit and people will post that their phone has a bad esn and people still buy them all day long..

Maybe you can go into the EPST and see what the previous owner's email/phone number was. Or maybe some files on the SD card will give you a clue.
Or post an ad in the found section of Craigs but say you'll only give it to the person who has the box with the IMEI number on it.

Definitely, call the police and report this. Since it is a new phone, you may be able to get a felony charged to him. Isn't theft of items over $500 a felony? The phone new is is $550 bucks. That is a felony. Please do it. People like that do not deserve any ounce of niceness, pity, or the right to vote. Please, please report him. I know how you feel. I was scammed once like this. A guy my sister knew(not really a friend just someone she knew) said he needed money pay rent or he was going to be evicted and he could trade a Wal-Mart gift card for the cash. He had a $300 gift card and needed $100 bucks to pay rent. So I thought why not because I can check the balance of the card before I give him the cash. And that the gift card is only good to him if he buy something at Walmart and not to pay rent. Plus my sister said he was a cool guy. I meet him and he dials his phone on speaker to check the balance of the card. The balance on a card comes to just at $300. So, I'm like awesome I've helped someone out and got a nice deal. I get home and start shopping on Walmart.com for a TV I've been wanting. I go to check out and the card says there's insufficient funds available on it. Turns out that the guy switched the cards. I was pissed. My sister found out that he had a drug problem and he had done this to other "friends". I reported him and he was arrested. He had done it to at least 4 other people. I should have checked the balance myself, but since my sister said he was cool, I thought hearing it from his phone was enough to be legit. Being scammed does make one feel dumb, but they have practice at doing it. They make it their job. And we all tend to get good at our jobs. Please report him. I feel for you, bro. Good luck.

I hate to hear stories like this. I have followed up on (3) incidents involving cell phone fraud/abuse/theft and can verify (1) arrest from it. Cell phone companies will take the loss in lost/stolen equipment but there is no limits to what you can do personally in exacting justice on these criminals.
Always remember: Evil prevails when good men do nothing...
I wish you the best in this situation, however I do agree that doing anything that would endanger personal safety is not worth it...
Um... call the police?
Just a thought though...
I could be WAY off on this one.

I like that. Is that a quote from someone else?
Ok.....heres the deal. About 3 weeks ago i saw a ad on craigslist about a epic touch for sale. I use Textplus App when I text someone on Craigslist...but anyways, i texted the person to inquire about the phone.. He said he was a manager at the Sprint Kiosk in the mall down the street from my job. He said that he was selling the phone for $500. I was like, thats full price. So I declined and took my business elsewhere.
About a week later i see an add in Craigslist from the same person, this time selling a iphone 4. I use my sister's phone to send the guy a text about the iphone 4. Again he says its brand new and still in its wrappings and he's selling it for $400. I passed again...
So last Friday, i see another ad on Craigslist for a Epic Touch, brand new and sealed. I make contact with the person, via regular text. Its the same person as before. He tells me that he's selling the Touch for $500 or willing to trade it for a good computer.
I offered him a laptop or two phones. He accepted the offer but after a couple hours, i contacted him to let him know i had to think about it.
Yesterday he texted me and now says he has a brand new Iphone 4s, wrapped and seal and that he can get me any color i want. He told me he'll sale it to me for $650 or my laptop, one of my phones plus $150...i said, hell no. Thats too much to give away. I then tried to call his bluff. I told him to text me a copy of the receipt showing he paid $650+ for the phone. He said that he didnt have a receipt and that it was a direct ship to his job (the sprint kiosk). He said that the order receipt doesnt have his name nor a price on it. I then told him that i noticed that he was selling a new phone almost every week and selling them for full retail. He claimed that he has a family plan and that since he's a sprint employee, he gets phones for the 2 year price.
My guess is that he's stealing the phones and then selling them. I find it strange that someone has a different high end phone every week and brand new at that.
What do you all guess?

I'd say if your worried about it then make a call to Sprint and report what info you have. Then it will be up to them to look into it. If they don't, you did your part and Sprint can only blame themselves.
if it's a corporate kiosk he could get fired for that whether he bought them legitimately or not. our employment agreement says we can't sell phones at all as it's a conflict of interest since you would be competing with the company you work for. most of the kiosks that are left are 3rd party but i'm sure they have a similar agreement

if youre going to accuse someone of stealing you better be sure they are. it sounds like you do not have any real evidence to prove that he is.
Still sounds fishy.
I would give what info I had, the links on craigslist, and let Sprint or the 3rd party store take care of it themselves. Let them do the investigating.

I'm basically just going off of speculation and assumption. But all in all, it just doesn't sound right....selling high end phones every week, brand new, can't produce a receipt...then says it was a direct order to his job....(the spirit kiosk)....sounds fishy..

I would still call Sprint and have them transfer you to the right department and have them investigate, try HR - Human Resources. BE SURE TO CALL AND HAVE THEM INVESTIGATE!!! Ask if they can call you back and let you know what the story is. Good luck!!! Make sure to call, because this will make prices go up if he is stealing!!!
What do you mean prices will go up?

If you were getting those phones much cheaper from him, I am sure this thread wouldn't exist right now.
What about I fly to Wisconson and go to the store with you? I bet you get a free Photon. I'm 5'8" and only 145Lbs, Piss me off and I will clear a bar!!! (Seriously, I did not have a Sprint bill for like 5 months. I gave them he**)

First off bro, don't mean sound rude or anything cause that ain't me...but if something doesn't seem right to a person, they normally stay away...no matter how good the deal may be. I definitely don't need the police knocking at my door saying I received stolen property or sprint contacting me telling me the phone I have was stolen....
Also, remember he texted me this past time about the iphone...I didn't contact him. In addition, I don't think i NEED cold hard evidence...this isn't "The Peoples Court"...lol. But I do feel that maybe Sprint or whomever should look into the matter...

I'm going to be honest here. I used to work for tmo in the past and I sold phones on Craigslist, **** ton of them. I was the #1 rep in my district for a very long time and I had new devices falling out of my ass lol. I won so many phones from HTC, moto, Nokia, Samsung, blackberry etc I didn't know what to do with them. Before tmo changed up everything I think I won 2 or 3 phones a month. They said we couldn't sell them but what the hell else were I supposed to do with all these smartphones? Was I wrong? probably. Did I care? Ehh not really I was young and just saw this $_$. The moral of the story is either hes winning them in contest/drawings or has stealing them and others are in on it. I wouldn't get involved though let sprint etc catch em!
Don't know if this is the correct forum or not, but I am certain I will be informed by somebody else should this be misplaced.
So.... I lost my phone last weekend and I subsequently filed a claim with Asurion, T-Mobile's insurance provider. However, I have a strange circumstance that did not require me to suspend my service. I was at the T-Mobile store getting a micro SIM card for use with another phone I was planning on flashing over to T-Mobile. Anyhow as it turns out, I could not get a micro SIM as it would render my service useless on my phone (unless of course I possessed a SIM card adapter, which I found existed after this incident). So the rep had to issue me a new SIM card.
After I all of that excitement I noticed I was running late picking-up my kids. So I rushed from the store, and I swear that I had all of my phones & SIM cards with me. However, upon returning home I could not locate my phone. I thought to myself that it must have fallen between the seats and that I would search for it after the kids leave. So I broke out the new SIM card and an old MyTouch 3G Slide to use during the interim. After the kids left I searched for my phone with no success. I even called the T-Mobile store and there too was informed they were not in possession of my Amaze.
I waited to file my claim anyways as I really believed my phone must be in my vehicle, especially as my truck is notorious for consuming cell phone, wallets, etc.! Sunday comes around and I still haven't found my Amaze. So I file a claim with Asurion, and I wait to hear back from them. Six hours later I get an e-mail response saying they have news about my claim. So I call the 866# and I am informed by a rep that my claim is denied because my line has been in use. I of course explain my story, and the rep claims to understand. They check with T-Mobile to see when the last use of my phone occurred and according to them it was the following day. This is odd, but my thought is that I had not used my phone the entire day prior to filing my claim thus the report of the last use of my phone.
After all is said and done, the rep at Asurion files another claim assuring me that this claim would not be rejected & that she would call me within 24 hours. I never heard from the rep so I called again only to be informed that my claim again is denied with no reason given. So again I tell the rep what happened, and again the rep says the understand, calls T-Mobile, and files another claim with all the same promises as before. Next day I get the same e-mail as I received prior which by now indicates to me that my claim is denied. This time when I call I decided to escalate the situation. Well, this only further confused the rep I spoke with as they also refused to allow me to speak to a supervisor while claiming they could solve the issue. I get placed on hold by this rep with the excuse that HE needed to contact T-Mobile. He comes back on the line, and right away starts to tell me that my line is insured not my phone! I of course already have the literature from Asurion pulled up. I very firmly explain to him that every single reason he has given me for not honoring my claim is complete BS.
This representative continued to hold his ground that my phone line is insured, that if they cannot detect the phone on the network the claim is no good and some other idiotic excuse that I rebutted. By now he can tell that I am not very satisfied with their tactics, nor his level of service. So he again places me on hold telling me that HE will speak with T-Mobile. Well... I got blind transferred to T-Mobile, and of course I am informed that they cannot process the insurance claim. I immediately ask to speak with a supervisor. So I get placed on hold, rep returns telling me that I need to wait and she asks me if she could place me on hold again, then she hangs-up on me. Great! An hour on the phone & I get nowhere.
So I decided to try the online support people. Which when I am chatting online sometimes with "customer support" I 100% feel that I am speaking with a chat-bot! This 'person' also tells me that they cannot do anything. However, he offers me phone upgrades on all 4 lines of service. So while I am waiting for this 'person' to type their next reply I began to search for an upgrade. Some upgrade it turns out to be as they are basically offering me to purchase phones at the full retail price. I let the rep know that this is such a bogus benefit and that I could purchase a phone at the full retail price anytime I wished. Enough of this; I'll just call T-Mobile one last time and inform them straight away that this is the last opportunity for them to get this right, and that after dealing with Asurion & their less than stellar service, I will not be calling them. This time I actually get a person that really understands the words coming from my mouth. He ends up filing the claim with Asurion for me, and after speaking to 10 people by now informs me that my claim will continue to be denied unless I suspend my service!
I had figured by now that no human is involved in the processing of claims. Looks like I am correct in my assessment. Sigh.... So again I get a notice this morning that my claim is ready and to call again, which is code for your claim is denied. Yup, my 5th claim is denied. So I am typing out this story of frustration while I await a reply to my 6th claim. A claim which I have finally adapted all of my responses for their automated system to understand.
I realize this is very long winded, but I appreciate your understanding of my frustration with what I now view as some sort of scheme. A scheme that is meant to bilk consumers out of their hard earned dollars, and never provide the service for which they have paid.
Am I the only person that has had this issue with Asurion/T-Mobile or any other carrier as it seams Asurion has the market cornered on providing Phone Replacement Insurance for every major carrier?!
Sadly Sent from my A500 while I feel lonely without my Amaze 4G
sorry to hear..
This is why Ive NEVER gotten insurance on ANY phone i've ever owned (be it on t-mobile, or verizon, or sprint). Because of the fact I know they all insure through asurion and I know for a fact Asurion sucks balls. Ive heard and read so many horror stories about asurion...not to mention the replacement phones they send out are usually garbage. theyre usually refurbished phones..and by refurbished phones they clean the screen, make sure it turns on, and then call it good. the same phone that went in for signal problems will 99% come out with signal problems. Eff asurion in the a, seriously. dont ever get asurion insurance again. if you ever do get insurance on the phone make sure its carrier insurance, not insurance via 3rd party (aka asurion)
i hope everything works out well for you.
Update:
Just as I planned I received an email finally approving my claim! This is what happens when an f-ing computer decides what to do. There quite literally has been no human involvement with my claim. Yet these ya'hoo's talk about fraud & all this other crap.
I got news for you idiots: when a system is finally figured out by people, then it is ripe for being manipulated.
I do agree very much with the post above me though. Stay away from the insurance for more reasons then the fact that you will be ripped off by this company. My opinion is that you save the $8/month you would pay towards the insurance & save it specifically for a fund for your phone.
Another note: I have been reading a whole lot of posts about stolen or lost devices. I highly suggest installing some program such as Lookout. I am still checking on my phone every day to see if it has been turned back on/found by somebody.
Other security ideas to consider: encrypting the data on your phone & SD card, locking the phone, password protecting the SIM card and with ICS entering owner info that is displayed on the lock screen (there are still some honest persons out there, they just don't always think to call the carrier to let them know they found a phone).
About the above security suggestions... I know that people complain about how unlocking the phone takes too much time. My sister is the biggest complainer I know. I did her a favor by installing Lookout on her brand new Amaze. Anyways, the 3 seconds it takes to unlock your phone can save you the headache later.
Just saying!

I've been shelling out money to these folks for the past 3yrs now.
What I want to know is did you call and tell T-Mobile that you lost the phone? Because they should be able to IMEI block it. Then I would go as far as to get a police report and then send in the claim again. Once that they see your phone is IMEI blocked then it should qualify your claim. Don't quote me on this but its worth a shot.
Good Luck.
If they don't ever wanna cooperate, always file a complaint with the BBB. Works with me

Received replacement late yesterday. Upon plugging in for initial charge noticed that the usb connector is loose, and yes I am using the charger sent with the phone.
I have to say my loyalty to this underrated phone is waning, and the thought of jumping over to Samsung is worrisome. I cannot and will not use a phone that I cannot replace the battery or add memory! Sorry HTC, but the One line lacks a whole lot of thought.
If my Acer tablet had cellular capability, I would just use it. The A500 has the best battery life I've ever had in an electronic product, and is well designed & constructed. Only problem is the optics, they suck.

you have to realize you recieved a refurbished product, not a new one. furthemore it was refurbished by ASURION not HTC. so factor both of those in and be happy it even works. Asurion's QC is horrible most of the time it seems they make sure it turns on and then say ''okay its fine''

Yeah. I know now that this is a newly refurbished P.O.S.! I am not pleased at all. Just got off the phone with Asurion. They are sending me an One S. I really don't know what to do here. if you know its a refurbished phone, then dont be mad at HTC =)
I say give the OneS a good try. You may find that the removeable battery isnt all its cracked out to be. yeah no sd slot is a bummer but seriously give it a shot. Personally I would have asked for another amaze. =)
I cancelled my insurance a few days ago because of this post! I'll never send another penny to Asurion.

Blame people that scam for all of this non sense, by all means I don't fully agree with all of asurions practices but working for tmobile I get to see the side you guys dont. People call in for claims by using there friends phones to try and get better phones, people that "lost" it and we check there call history and someone they know is using it, etc..... its easy to be upset I would if I was in ops shoes but if you understand the system insurance is great to have, I always tell people if you lose your phone first things first file your claim get it started even if u don't complete it you can get the proper direction on what steps to do once its lost to get your service up and running till you get a new one.

Cant really say I have any complains with Asurion other than the T Mobile store I went to was out of Amazes so I got stuck with a SGS2. Although technacly two SGS2s ebcause the first one had a problem where when making a call nothing would be heard, so luckilly I was in the parking lot still and went back in and got a replacement. I tried talking to the lady into letting me pay a difference for a OneS but she said not :/ I love HTCs so its kind of a bummer to have a Samsung but I cant complain too much either.
Also off topic: Glad to see the Amaze finally got CM9 working, well GSM atleast

ONE S is probably the best phone i've ever used from T-Mboile. (after flashing a new rom with the 3dots menu removed) nice battery life, thin, slick, fast, feels great in my hand, awesome bright screen that's just the right size for one hand use. I like it much better than my S3, except the no microSD card slot part. non removable battery doesnt really matter if you have have the 3.99 warranty replacement.
I just cracked my my amaze screen the other day, even had the d30 case. It just landed on its face sadly.. but what kind of deductible does assurion charge ? I'm debating on just keeping the phone cause its just a hairline crack straight up the middle of the screen.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
They deductible is around 125-130$ also if you decide to go that route, PRAY or call a Tmo store ahead to see if they even have any Amaze's left. There were none at the store I filed my claim so I got stuck with a SGS2
Dang, I didn't even pay that much for the phone. I convinced tmobile to fork it over for 50... No way I'm paying twice as much for a refurb. Thanks though.

I cracked my screen a few weeks ago. I also had the D3O case but it didn't help at all. the deductible was $130 and Asurion set my replacement right away (called about 23:00 Saturday night and had new phone Tuesday morning). the one they sent me was a brand new phone in a sealed unopened box, so now I have a spare battery, battery cover and SIM card.
That makes it sound much better. New phone and an extra battery will be sweet. I'll go for it. Thanks

I would trade my Amaze for a One S in a heartbeat. Going to the S4 processor and be able to run Cyanogenmod. Heck, the One S has a much more stable CM10 than the Amaze does for CM9. I hate that I can't get a stable Cyanogenmod ROM on my phone.
So, a week ago I bought an HTC One from craigslist. We met at a T-Mobile store so that they could verify the phone was clean and able to be activated. They said everything was clean and safe to buy. Phone was working great for a week and then out of nowhere earlier today all the data and cellular service just turns off completely. I try turning it off & on several times, toggling airplane mode off/on, etc. etc. Finally I go in to a T-mobile store. After 30 minutes of turning it off & on, changing the SIM, calling corporate, etc. eventually they tell me that the phone was reported lost earlier today and is now blocked.
They tell me there is nothing they can do.... am I really just out the $450 now? Is there anything I can do??? What's the point of them verifying or checking anything if this can still be done? Any help or suggestions please!?!?
The only way to get it taken off the list is if the original phone owner calls in and says it is not stolen. It can be used with AT&T but none of the carriers that use Tmobile.
What your seller probably did was make an insurance claim. Get a second phone for $175 then he never returned the old phone sold it to you made $325 and then you get screwed.
Happens a lot more often now that IMEI can be blocked since march.
If you can get a hold of the person who sold it to you and be like wtf

If your seller was the original owner, then he is committing fraud if he has later reported it stolen. Check with the seller, and if you don't get a good answer, call the police. If the phone is stolen, then you need to call the police.
Thanks both of you, I love xda!
You think the police are really going to do anything about this? I kinda figured that would be a long shot. I'm guessing if I can find the seller's contact info they either won't answer, will hang up on me right away, or maybe even change their number if they didn't already....
To me, what I can't understand is how T-mobile doesn't have a better process that is more controlled. The IMEI should be tied to an account/owner and only be allowed to be activated on another account after transferring the ownership with the owner's consent. This seems like a pretty spotty process without any kind of controls in place.
Really don't want to be out half a grand....
Unfortunately I don't see any process like that anytime soon probably minimum ten years. That's what GSM is all about freedom to get a phone anywhere anytime. It is unfortunate that this happened to you. Happens very frequently especially within first fee months of phone launch.

The police report may not help you, but eventually it is quite possible that it will get the perpetrator into a lot of trouble - maybe keeping them from hitting someone else...
wait til all the big names start sharing the IMEI blacklists.
fun times.
I called T–mobile myself a bit ago and just explained what happened. Apparently the lady put in a request to unblock it. She said it will take up to 48 hours to get it unblocked and to power cycle my phone pull the SIM out and try to make a call in 48 hours. Not sure what to think about that.... I guess I'll just give it a day or two and see what happens :/ From the research I've done it sounds unlikely they'll unblock it but I will stay optimistic.
SIDE NOTE: I found the sellers phone number and the text string of arranging the purchase. Think I should contact authorities or T-Mobile with the info or just try calling them directly?
If nothing else doesn't work, you can sell it to an Canadian or foreigner... Otherwise good luck...Did you ask for the receipt?, because when I bought my t-mobile htc one, I asked the seller to sent me a receipt.

Haha yeah I understand what you're saying and that you're not promoting me doing the same thing that was done to me. As a backup plan if nothing else works, this device could be used on AT&T right? I recently came from Sprint so not real savvy on how the SIM card / GSM networks work yet. Would I have to get the device "unlocked" to use on AT&T or a different GSM network? If so, could anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this and/or how much that costs.
Att and tmobile share imei lists.
Take that text string to tmobile. If the number that Texted you about the se is the number on his account. They can cross reference your phones imei to his number and use those texts as proof of purchase and help you.
I work at a store and if you came to me with this info I would unblock it for you....just sayin

You would also get fired for doing something stupid like that. You need to read up on the process of unblocking phones. Serious note, dont risk your job over something like this. Its not worth it, plus that phone is property of asurion once its reported stolen.
Do this!!!!
*Try to contact seller and get your money back
*Contact authorities and have them file a report and maybe and insurance fraud case.
*Dont waste your time anymore trying to contact tmobile. They will not unblock it. That phone belongs to asurion due to them paying for it. I would also recommend calling them 1-866-268-7221 Maybe they can assist you with something.
Good luck and hope you get your money back.

Actually I wouldn't be risking my job at all and there is a very strong possibility it would get unlocked. in circumstances such as this a rep can approach his manager with it and the store manager has the ability to call customer care and request the unblock. I would not be unblocking it myself

Well there is your lesson learned, Don't buy phones from Craigslist! I actually in the past had that happen but on a iPhone 4S and well it actually got blocked 3 days later and AT&T said it was reported stolen. So From there on I either buy my phones on ebay or just do some AT&T loopholes to get a brand new HTC One which I did and pay the new activation price for it

Why not learn a lesson from it and sell it to get the most of it ? Thats what i did in past
You can sell it on eBay say it is blacklisted at least get some money back.
Buddy of mine lost his phone made a claim. Then found his phone the day he got the new phone he called asurion for instructions on what to do he sent his new phone back they received it and got his money back in about ten days total. But they never unblocked his current phone that he found again. Here we are almost three months later his phone is still blacklisted and did nothing wrong. Called Tmobile at least ten times they always say 48 hours and doesn't do anything so he just gave up its a paperweight.

So I went over to Ebay and I see there is an HTC One with a T-mobile blacklisted IMEI with over 40 bids selling for over $400... this is very encouraging. Only difference is that one is Unlocked and the seller said he already verified it does work with AT&T with some minor APN changes. Does this seem legit? If so, what is the best/cheapest/most reliable way for me to unlock my phone? I did research this, but it sounds like many online sites charge a pretty good fee for this and don't have the best reputation. Also, most recommended having your carrier do it, which I'm sure is not an option in my case..... Appreciate the support!

I wont suggest you listing it as a phone working on at&t because this phone would not work in usa after a certain period(when tmobile UPDATES their blacklist with other networks) , if the ebay seller advises as such he would face the consequences . Payments are mostly done through paypal and they give a 45 day window for the buyer to claim the phone as not described . That would put you again in the same situation you are today in . You not just sell it for parts ? Get your money out of this sh*t and get yourself a new phone?
Just my 2cent !
@jones75534 sorry to tell u but most unlocking service wont unlock your phone . It is blacklisted in all the database
I'm thinking of buying blacklisted TMo GS5 (because of the unlocked bootloader & also because it's cheaper to get a blacklisted phone becuase of the stigma), if I were to unlock it would I be able to use it on AT&T or it's MVNO's? Has anywhere sucessfully tried it? Thanks,
Last time I checked at&t and Tmobile were sharing blacklisted list. Not 100% sure but I think that was the case a few years ago

I am not a goody two shoes - far from it - but to me there is something morally wrong with buying and supporting Black listed phones = just to save a few bucks.
you are in effect supporting the people who stole the phone in the first place - I would rather pay a premium price for a new phone and know that I am not getting a deal because of someone elses misfortune than pay less for a black listed phone just to save money,
If you have ever had a phone stolen from you - I think you would agree - buying a black listed phone is not a victimless crime it can perpetrate the original theft and we should all consider avoiding that....all black listed phones are probably not stolen - but how do you know?
my two cents

Most blacklisted phones are either financed or reported lost. That's why they are blacklisted by the carrier. I've never had anybody steal my phone or know of anyone who had their phone stolen. Those who default on their payment deserve to get their phones blacklisted but at that point they are out of the innitial $200+ anyway. So if they're looking to resell the phone to recoupe that money, I'm not sure how that should be looked down upon. Meanwhile those who lose their phones and later go on to report it as stolen because they want to get a new phone thru insurance, get no sympathy from me.

This. But my friend was caught by this, and there is no resolve for the issue he ran into. Goes like this:
He wanted to upgrade, but his upgrade was not up yet, so he decided to go on craigslist and buy a Brand new in box factory sealed GS3. He did so for something like $450 right after launch. He took the phone out of the box, set it up with his SIM, was on tmo fine for about a month or 40 days or so.
He goes to use his phone, and it wont connect to tmo, wont call via wifi, ect. So he calls tmo. They tell him the phone's original account defaulted and was never paid on, even though it was now on his account, and he had been a customer for something like 12+ years with a 4G tablet, and multiple phones in the past, they said they could do nothing to remove the blacklist. They said it was originally purchased with another GS3. They think it was most likely some kind of identity fraud. Sign somebody up and grab two $450 phones and sellem factory sealed.
He ended up selling it as a blacklisted phone on tmo to an AT&T Sub who unlocked it and used it on that carrier, but at a large loss.
For this reason, I will never buy a second hand phone. Its not worth the risk of losing the amount of money these phones go for off contract. Unless someone can prove the phone is paid off. In which case I probably still wouldn't do it.

I thought blacklisted phones cannot connect to any GSM carriers in the US because they share the same IMEI database?
blacklisted != blocked != reported lost != reported stolen...
there's different situations that warrant where it'll be blocked from and different databases. actually, checkesnfree dot com does a pretty good job explaining it, though it's not 100% foolproof. just run a test with an imei number and see the different response types. they give you a decent list of possible results.
i've run AT&T on an unlocked T-Mobile SGS3 that was reported lost and it still works. because it's blocked from T-Mobile but not blacklisted across all.
hope this gives you some insight. i nearly got ripped by an eBay seller who sold me a fraudulently obtained S5 which i promptly returned and thank God it all worked out (dude had 100% positive across several years too, it surprised the sheeeet outta me). I ended up driving to Delaware (only 40 minutes from me and I had to do other shopping anyway) and got it tax free with my friend's T-Mobile number at $660 instead of $689. paid $25 on eBay for the unlock code and now I'm 100% worry free, bootloader lock free, KNOX free lol, and rooted.
lesson: it's a $650+ investment. be smart. since I'm running it on AT&T anyway, I could have kept that eBay phone which was blocked and not blacklisted, but why bother? who knows what could happen down the line? value would also be down. plus, I made 30 minutes of phone calls with my friend's T-Mo sim card (to be safe, 30, not just 5) just to ensure it also gets region unlocked too. =)
if you do buy it somewhere else, make sure they have a receipt showing it was PAID IN FULL. cash. they could report a stolen CC number down the line too so I wouldn't trust even one paid in full with CC. even then with a cash receipt I would be careful.. they could report it stolen later down the line, collect insurance, whatever! which goes around again to this: it's not worth it, just get it straight from the carrier! it's a freakin $650-$700 device, it's not worth gambling to save a few bucks!
Blacklisted doesnt necessarily mean stolen. Most of the time some ppls phone is damaged were thr company will demand them to buy another phone instead they report it lost n pay for insurance to get another one easy. It makes sense ur paying for insurance why not use to its full potential?

I just purchased a S5 a couple days ago from Craigslist. Meet the person in a T-mobile store and checked the imei before buying it. Everything checked out and I bought it.
A friend once gave me a Verison DroidX. I called Verizon and they confirmed it was Blacklisted. Took it to metro and activated it with no problems.
My S5 is black listed and working just fine on at&t network. No locked boot loader and rooted all the way. Got it cheap too haha
