[Q] Where are apps from the market downloaded to? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
I was wondering what is happening with apps when you are installing them from the market. where they are downloaded to. is it some kind of temporary folder or what?
I have a Coby 7022(root) and when i try to download bigger app then 30mb, I get a error. the android is downloading ( you can see the progress) it but after a while it it says not enough memory to download.
Thank you

It would seem that you may need to free up some space on your memory card, you can free alot up by clearing your browser history and cache.

there was a market bug that when you tryed to download a app around that size it would give you that error message it happened to me even though i had over 3GB free internal storage but when the market updated that was fixed for me

Download 'market fix' from Google play and run it (it needs root access though).

[Q] Inbuilt Memory shortage

Hi
Sorry not a high tech question but would appreciate some help
Re. my viewpad 7
Seems to be constantly short of inbuilt memory.
(should be 512mb)
was down to zero today though have not addded anything for a while.
Clearing cache and history via browser took it back up to 8 mb but already with an hours use down to 6mb again.
Have moved everything that Apps manager allows over to the (16GB) SD card, which still has lots of space.
Neither of the "File Explorer" or "Settings/SD card and phone storage" routes let me actually see what's in phone memory.
Pad is "as bought" re rom's etc
Would appreciate any help.
thx
Russ
It's got 512mb total, which is split over different partitions.
You are running out of space on the /data partition, try uninstalling some apps, or use an app like apps2sd to move some to your sd card.
Thanks for quick response but have tried deleting a few apps and have already moved everything that can be moved onto sd card
have downloaded a couple of versions of app2sd apps 2sd etc but they do not offer any more suggestions on apps that can be moved as I say I have aready moved all that seem moveable
It does seem that it's some sort of data thats the problem but I can't see into the inbuilt memory to see what data it is or from what app

It is stupid Android. When you move apps to SD, than still some (usualy bigger) parts is still in internal memory. When you move apps to SD, than info about occupied space is valid only for occupied space on SD by the apps. If you want to know how big is the application than you have to move back to internal memory, than info is correct.
Also some updating of system apss can consume very big space of internal memory. For example Aldiko can occupy 6MB !!!!
The problem is, when you install a new app either from Android Market, Amazon App Store or anywhere else, the system retains the .apk install file somewhere in memory. I'm yet to find where those files are stored.
You can use a file manager like Astro File manager to see all the files on your viewpad 7's internal memory however, manipulating those files is a bit trickier. I thought I found them in a \sys\data directory or something like that but the system refuses to let me delete them.
Does anyone know for certain where these .apk files are stored. I've deleted/moved everything I can and am down to the apps that I need on the unit. If I have to delete more, then there is no sense having a small form-factor tablet. The space that is being used is far above the applications that I have installed so there has to be garbage files somewhere that need cleaned up.

Can´t recovery the used space even after uninstalling the app´s, help needed?

Hi,
I have a ZTE Blade with CM 7.1 (don´t kow if it happens on another devices / roms) and i´m having a serious problem.
Internal storage memory is getting low at a very fast rate.
The problem is, when i install an app, it decrease the internal storage memory, ok everything normal.. but when i move it to the SD card or even when i uninstalled it, i can´t recovery the free space it had before..
For example, i installed an app of 30mb (automatically on the SD Card), and it occupied the 30mb on the internal storage memory too.. Worse, i uninstalled the app, and the 30mb are still used on internal storage memory. I´ve tried to clear the market cache without any success.. I suspect it has the apk install file somewere on the internal storage memory, but where?
Knowing that your phone is CM7, it is rooted, right?
Try using Root Explorer (or any explorer with root rights) and go to /data/app. Check if the app is still there, delete it if yes.
Go to /data/data and check for a folder with the app name, delete it.
Warn: Do that if you unnistalled the app.

"Insufficient memory"?

on a friends stock Amaze(no root or anything), he gets this error when trying to download new apps from the market. his internal storage is free about 250mb, and his phone storage free is almost 10gb, what gives?
Tell him to move over some apps from phone storage to his internal mass storage. That's the only thing I can think of. almost all the apps that I have encountered can be installed on an sd card (or mass storage on amaze)but there are those few here and there that don't so only move over what apps will still work.

that's lame. if i were to root his phone and install a different ROM, would a ROM with apps2sd resolve this issue completely? thanks
edit: so clearing the data and cache of the market app seems to have resolved this issue, for anyone who has it.

Insufficient storage space after setting install location

I have set the install location of my phone to external. Even though I am installing apps to ad directly, I can't install apps higher than the internal free space left.

Have you rooted the phone and installed something like Link2SD or JaggyROM and linked all apps to SD (different to moving apps to SD in settings the normal way)? If not, I strongly advise you do. I have the same phone and could only install about half a dozen apps at a time until I rooted and got Link2SD and now I have about 75 apps installed. I still can't install any app over about 35MB in size (that's how much free space I typically have in my internal storage), but that is fine for me. If you install JaggyROM, you can get about 148MB free, so can install apps up to 148MB in size.
Link 2sd can't make the mount scripts correctly, it pauses with an error. I need to try jaggyrom.:beer:

[Q] New apps being downloaded on phone memory despite doing 'ADB'

I have a HTC HD 2 running Android 4.1.2 (Jellybean). I used this guide to set the 'micro sd' slot as the place for storing apps. After doing this, I was able to move all my existing apps to the SD card which was not possible before. Now, whenever I go to Google Play to download a new app, the downloads with sizes above 25 MB are not completing successfully. My available phone memory is 20 MB and all downloads below this size are happening fine. Also, there are some downloads which compete but I get the 'insufficient storage available' error when trying to install them. Thus I am unable to get new apps as the phone memory remaining is around 20 MB.
Can anyone help me out? How to select the storage card as the default place for installation a new app from the Google Play store? I have already checked via 'adb shell pm get-install-location' that my default drive is '2'.
Thanks

Dear Friend ... As the Adb code was , the best way is to reflash the ROM and later if you wanted to move apps to SD , just partition the SD card ( especially in sense ROMs - NOTE : partitioning SD card removes all your SD card data !!! ) ... or simply try using " Link 2 SD " or " App 2 SD " apps ... Good luck
With Best Wishes
