[Q] Sketchbook Pro on gNote? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello everyone!
I've been searching and searching for a way to run AutoDesk's Sketchbook Pro on my Galaxy Note and I've run into pretty much nothing but people mentioning that they doodled this or that with Sketchbook Pro but no real method on how to get it on the device.
I had it on my EVO View and it's absolutely fantastic for on-the-go sketches and artwork, but I sold the View in favor of the gNote's portability and the wacom digitizer.
I haven't been the least bit dissapointed, but I am a little irked that I can't seem to find a way to get Sketchbook Pro to work. I have the Mobile version installed, but the lack of pressure sensitivity is murderous.
I've tried several roms including Noteworthy and Saruon's, and I currently have Hybrid v4 on there but still... Market states it's incompatable and I haven't found a way to get just the APK to try and install it with Hybrid's tablet mode. I did get Photoshop Touch running on the Note with a modified APK and that works rather well... I just want me some Sketchbook Pro now.
Anyone have any suggestions or advice to get it rolling on the gNote?

I used to be one saurom but got fed up with all the incompatible with yourself device issues. Even Samsung apps was incompatible. I decided to revert back to stock rom and it was a great decision. Since then I've had no compatibility issues.
If stock is not an option for you I'm pretty sure if you download the apk online and side load it should work.

I don't have a single problem reverting to stock or another ROM, but as it stands Sketchbook Pro is incompatible with the Note by default. I'm not sure what the market is reading for incompatibility, so I'm not even sure if I can build.prop spoof it into letting me download it natively.
But I figure if I can get Photoshop Touch, also rated for tablets only, to run on the gNote... I feel that Sketchbook Pro should be able to as well, right?
I can't even find a way to safely get the APK off the market without using a fishy Chrome plug in, either. Then again, I could be looking in the wrong place.

Sketch book works fine for me. Running the hybrid rc4

HUH? Im on completely stock, never been rooted Gingerbread and I have SBM Pro running on my i717 AT&T Note. In fact, it just got a major update today for pressure sensitivity.
To be honest, I have no idea how SBM got on my phone in the first place, I bought my phone brand new and I dont recall purchasing the app, I thought it came stock on the phone. But I mustve bought it and installed it cause its on my phone and running and is uninstallable, I just played with it a few hours ago.

huh. didn't even know Sketchbook existed. thanks guys.
installed fine on my Hybrid Rom w/tablet mode.

Ok silly question, what's the difference between Sketchbook Pro and Sketchbook Mobile?

Basically, Mobile is the phone version and Pro is the tablet version. There are differences in the interface and features as well.
FYI, Sketchbook Mobile was updated last night and now features pressure sensitivity for the Note on stock GB. Works well too.

I know this is probably an old thread, buy I'd like to rewritten the discussion about Pro on the Note.
Mobile is great for what it is, but like the OP, I also got used to Pro on my HTC Flyer. Some features that really enhance productivity include the ability to save custom brushes to the radial menu, and being able to transform a selection within a layer(rather than the entire later itself).
I've paid for the Pro version in the play store, so I sideloaded it onto my Note. It has problems with the device's resolution, it seems, because there are display and digitizer calibration issues. I'm wondering if there's any way to edit the apk to remedy this..?

[Q] Document Editing App

I really need a document editing app for my gtab but they are all so expensive. Has anyone used a solid app with TNT 4.4.0 that they could recommend before I spend 15 bucks on one? Thanks Guys.

To be fair, they're expensive for a reason...
I've purchased Documents ToGo and am very happy. It renders complex documents better than QuickOffice as well, and to me accurate rendering was the most important aspect.
I've had good comments about ThinkFree in the past, but I haven't tried it personally.
+1 on Docs to Go.
It is not cheap for a reason. It does a lot of stuff and does it well.
quick office pro is super effective!!!. XD
I find it the most user friendly for use on a g tab.
QuickOffice Pro
I have been using QuickOffice Pro for about four months now and have zero complaints about it. I would highly recommend it.
As for the version Gojimi got off of the Notion Ink image... since it was bundled with that device I would assume the makers of that tablet and the makers of QuickOffice had a licensing deal and so to use that version on any other tablet smells a bit too much like piracy to me.
If you want developers and companies to keep bringing us great apps and games then we should make every effort to support them with our money.
Just sayin'...
[edit] One thing to note, QuickOffice Pro didn't show up for me in the Market so I had to purchase it on my Droid X and sideload it from there. But, once it is loaded on the gTab you can check for updates within the app and it will initiate a download if one is there.
I have been using QuikOffice and like it.
I see there is a QuickOffice Pro HD on the market - specifically for tablets.
I have tried to download it but get a Parse Error when attempting to install it. Same thing when I attempt to side load it.
Anyone else experience this?
Is Pro HD a Honeycomb only version exclusively for the Xoom?

[Q] Sluggish Touchscreen response when drawing on Galaxy Tab 10.1

Hi Guys,
just got my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (PT7500 / 16GB / 3G) yesterday.
Great Tab so far!
But still i recognize one downturn:
When compared to an iPad2, the screen response in drawing/sketching apps is less then satisfactory. I'd even go so far to deem this unusuable - no matter whether is use a capacitive stylus or my finger.
The touchscreen simply lags about 5mm / 1 sec. in response time.
Anyone else experienced this?
Is this by design? HW fault? SW fault?
Basically, the 10.1 is by this nearly unusuable as sketchpad - which is one of my major use cases here.
Maybe someone has experienced something similar?
Thanks very much for any response on this!
Best regards,
Klaas.
Hi Guys,
just to add to this:
I have made some comparisons again on this issue and found that the Galaxy Tab Touchscreen is seriously "lagging behind" when drawing on it.
When using an iPad drawing App (Sketchpad), the response to the touch is instantenous, on the Galaxy Tab the lines drag behind the finger.
Please see attached two comparison drawings:
The Sketch Pad Document is from an iPad 2
The 1.jpg is done with Big Fat Canvas on the Galaxy Tab 10.1
Both are made with the same capacitive pencil and written in the same speed.
Interestingly enough: When i draw VERY slowly, the result on the Galaxy Tab is as good as on the iPad.
So it seems to be a software problem of the Samsung Touchscreen driver being not very well written. Anyone can confirm that?
Furthermore, i did some more quick comparisons of Android tablets in our local electronics store and found that they're all very different:
- ASUS Transformer comes most closely to iPad
- Motorola XOOM behind
- ACER Iconia very sluggish
The Samsung ties in somewhere in the middle.
Interestingly enough i haven't found any discussion in the web on this topic...
Looking forward to any feedback anyone might be able to give on that!
Best regards,
Klaas.
well, i can just say that dragging items on the home screen is ridiculously slow... This isnt a smooth operation at all!
I am absolutely with you!!! Maybe everyone can program a new driver, but i think it have to do with the energy settings:-(
BTW: I reported this to Samsung Support and their answer was (what else?)
"Factory Reset, if no use, please send in for repair"
Also, Adobe Sketchbook brought the same result.
It seems that the Android multitasking gets in the way of a decent polling interval of the touchscreen - or so it seems. When more apps are running in background, the touchscreen gets more laggy...
I'm interested to see whether this improves in newer Android versions - as it's currently an Android Tab is not really usefull as sketchpad...
Best regards,
Klaas.
Use sgs touchscreen booster! In will help a little bit
I also have the same issue. Using Sketchbook Pro, and even the included memo app, is completely unusable. Tried sga touchscreen booster as well and it made a little difference, but not enough to make me able to draw or write anything. The Asus Transformer is much better as a sketching thingy.
Has there been any development on this?
Is with stock Honeycomb 3.1 or Touchwiz? I noticed after "upgrading" to touchwiz that the touchscreen responsiveness got much worse. i ended up going back to regular Honeycomb 3.1.
Mine's with touchwiz out of the box (the 3g version). I figured that touchwiz might be the problem. What is the best rom out there?
Hi guys, I'm the developer of a stylus-writing app (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.writepad) and after getting a lot of complaints from Galaxy tab users, decided to buy one and test it against my Asus Transformer. Here are some results. My stylus is the AYL: http://www.amazon.com/Newest-Genera...rranty/dp/B004HO86P6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Side by side, with the Samsung on the left and Asus on the right. Using the free app Maple Paint.
You can see from the W's that there are way fewer touch events from the Samsung touch screen. THat's why the corners are rounded. I had to confirm, so I did a similar test on my own app. The Asus registered 1076 touch events, while the Samsung registered around 600.
When I look at the actual MotionEvents, some differences: Pressure from Asus is around 0.8, and 0.13 on the Samsung. "Size" and "tool" are 0 on the Asus, and non-zero on Samsung.
Also, when you rest your palm on the screen, Samsung's touchscreen becomes unresponsive (even more so). The Asus has no such problem.
Is this a hardware or firmware issue? Will 3.2 update help?

I will try different software/firmware versions "side-by-side" when I get home to see if there's any improvement with the newer updates.
Is the Asus you tested with running Honeycomb 3.2 ?
Edit:
Have you taken your app "writepad stylus" off the market?
I paid for it (some weeks ago) and can't find it any more on the market.

Yeah Asus on 3.2, Samsung on 3.1 (though that's probably not the issue). I just ran Software update on samsung and it's on the latest firmware.
Writepad Stylus is here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.writepad

Thanks to transceiver for that nice comparison and testing of the handwriting app. I bought the new Samsung 10.1 tab with one of the primary intentions to use it to take handwritten notes during meetings and work sessions.
The Samsung's screen responsiveness is a great dissapointment and propably the worse I have seen of the current top "name brand" tablets. It is extremely sluggish in comparison to the rest and handwriting on it is almost impossible unless you write very slowly. Very frustrating indeed.
Let's hope they take note of this issue and can fix it with a firmware upgrade.
Returned Tab
I had the same problem. I actually returned my galaxy tab just because of this. I loved it but the iPad2 was far more responsive with handwriting. I use my tablet to jot ideas down and annotate very often. The slow Samsung tab was not adequate.
Yeah guys. Unfortunately it seems like both graphic driver and touchscreen sampling rate is crap. Made
Some small video and sent it to Samsung. They just did not care. Video is here:

I hope that soon the ics sources are released and we can replace the Samsung crap by something useable as CM8

wavy lines
just attached an image to show u guys what happens with a capacitive stylus
Absolute garbage if any one wants to do a simple sketch
Drawing diagonals produces wavy un even lines when drawn slowly with a capacitive stylus, hence any curve or circle comes out uneven
Can any of you post what happens when u draw a circle slowly or draw diagonals slowly using ur capacitive stylus
Want to know if its just my tablets problem
+ 1 It is totally unusable for anything then 5 year old finger painting.
Any devs looking at a possible fix?
Go to 10.1 Dev section .... check out the thread solving touchscreen sensitivity! Works like a charm .. handwriting works like how I like it now! Must get it!

[Q] Sketchbook Pro Screen All Scrambled

Hi I just did Globatron's HC upgrade and tried to install Sketchbook Pro. Everything looks fine until I try to draw, the screen is all scrambled. Like there is a issue with resolution or something. Is anyone else having this issue? Any solution? Fresco works but I'm looking for Pressure Sensitivity and SKetchbook seems like the only good App for Sketching. Any Suggestion?

I never had SBP working on HC leak 1 or 2 or 3. You did?
yeah it doesn't seem to work for me too. Can you at least install it? I got it to install with menu and options, it's just when I try to draw when the screen goes nuts. Looks like it's a screen resolution issue of some sort. I have a screen shot I'm going to send to them.
I have loaded it with no problem on each of the three HC leak ROMs and it opened fine and all navigation throughout app worked too. Like you, I get the wonky input distortion when using the stylus. I don't believe I ever tried if finger input worked. I just immediately uninstalled and loaded SB Mobile.
Sketchbook Mobile Pro is working good for me. The one for larger tablets won't though....requires higher resolution. It is not just a matter of OS, but also screen resolution....
are you talking about Sketchbook mobile? I know that works. Just emailed AutoCAD about SB pro and they think it maybe pen related. I think it is a screen resolution issue personally. But lets see how far I get with tech support, I sent them a screen shot. But in the mean time I happy with Sketchbook mobile and fresco app. Hope we can get SB pro working.
To my dismay, Sketchbook Pro performs as you say. Everything looks fine until you try and draw and then the canvas goes crazy.
The problem with Sketchbook mobile is it doesn't support pressure sensitivity, which makes it pointless, imho.
I feel like I'm back at square one. First I had the flyer on GB and couldn't get pressure sensitivity to work. Now that I have HC and the pen works everywhere, pressure sensitivity doesn't work in SKP.
Also, pressure sensitivity does not work in Photoshop Touch either. I wonder if HTC is doing something extra with their pen stuff that overrides Android's pen implementation.
i think its our screen size. And sketchbook pro didn't put into account 7" tabs with scribe pens. Hopefully it should be a easy fix for them. I think the app works its just not calibrated for our screen.

THERE IS NO ANDROID PEN SUPPORT folks. The pen works in drawing apps on the HTC HC because it mimics your finger. HC has no built-in pen support. HTC added it. If an app needs something that your finger can't do using the pen then the app has to know about the HTC styus SDK.
Sketchbook Pro draws with pressure sensitivity on the HTC jetstream so I'm not sure I follow.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using Tapatalk
Well clearly most apps don't work like that, and its not built-in on HC, so my guess is that the app developer has software that reads the type of digitizer that is present and uses the manufacturer's API libraries to provide functions. In this case HTC's Digital Stylus SDK, which is open source and available on HTC's website.
Therefore the problems that show up in the app and when you try to run apps built for the Levono because there is no built-in standard software to support the pen hardware in Android. ICS takes a step in that directions with some pen primitives in the API, but the apps will have to be re-written to work with those ICS functions, they are not the same as HTC or Levono API.
read this for more:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/1...ive-active-pen-support-in-ice-cream-sandwich/
Well it doesn't even work with finger. I would think with or without the HTC scribe pen you should be able todraw with it. To me it looks like the app is having issue with our screen size versus the larger 10" tablets this and other apps are design to run on. Don't even think it was ever an exclusive for Lenovo. Anyways so it looks like there is suppose to be SB Pro for android version 2.0. Been talking to tech support at autodesk and it should solve our problems, hopefully. Waiting on their reply on how I can get it since market doesn't show the updated version yet, still version 1.0. if anything turns up i'll let you guys know.
Update :
Looks like SB pro version should be releasing soon. They gave me no timetable but said it won't be long. I'm hoping for a happy holidays.
Sketchbook Pro goes 2.0
Just wanted to let you all know that Sketchbook Pro has gone version 2.0 and now works with the pressure sensitive Flyer!
If you own it, go get the update. It's worth it.
For those that dont' own it, go buy it because it's on sale for .99c
Great that SPB is now showing Flyer love. Nice companion to Photoshop Touch. SPB pressure sensitivity on Flyer does uncover the Flyer's lesser sensitivity levels than say the Lenovo Thinkpad. For my uses, the Flyer reads sensitivity in SBP well enough
Hell yeah, that's a nice surprise. It's nice how they really are keeping to their word, unlike some tablet manufacturer(s). This indeed makes a great companion to touch, here is hoping to Adobe stepping up and making it for our flyer(lower Resolution). I'm also interested in Adobe Ideas, would be nice to get it working properly on the Flyer. I decided to to a little digging and menu isn't compatible with the smaller screen resolution. Still sort of workable, but a enjoyable experience.

Yeah...Ideas not too workable for me on Flyer like in is on my Xoom and assume it is on a Puccini or Thinkpad. PST + SBP = productivity tool for basic creative tasks on Android slates >>> finally!
I was under the impression that the stylus pressure sensitivity for SBP 2.0 works, but it doesn't... for me at least.
you need to check the preference inside the program to allow the pressure sensitivity to work. If you hit the "i" goto preference.

Does anyone know of another option (other than the Market) to buy this app?
Because of some unknown charges, I closed my Google Wallet account and have been unable to find it any place.

do tablet apps work on galaxy note?

I was wondering if tablet apps worked on the note
No, but they should. They will when we get ICS.
This is kinda my major complaint, it's supposed to be a device that splits the difference between phone and tablet, yet it doesn't have the OS that unifies phone and tablet in the android world.
I have come acroas a few apps have an option to run in Tablet mode. In those cases it does work.
Sent from my Samsung Note via Tapatalk.
Most apps which say they're "Tablet" apps mean they're built for Honeycomb, and increasingly so for ICS as more tablets/devices come out with ICS. And no, those apps will not run on Gingerbread.
They will when ICS is on the Note, however I've found a number of apps which decide based on screen resolution that things can be teeny tiny, assuming the device is 7-10" I suppose. Probably means they're not doing the right thing with DPI values, but I've lodged my complaints in email to each developer letting them know about it and hopefully they improve them.
When I run spb mobile shell it installs in tablet then I have to change the setting to mobile.

Interestingly, Swiftkey X for phones says that it recommends running the tablet version of the app when I installed it. I installed Swiftkey X for tablets and it runs fine, too.

E-Ink device

I would like to have a tablet with an e-Ink screen so I could use it outdoors in full sunshine. Looked low and high but can't find anything. Is there something in the pipeline? I think it is possible to root some e-reader but I want support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, what is my best choice right now? Should I be patient and wait for something to come on the market?

A kindle? It has Wifi, but bluetooth, I don't know? Or Barnes and Noble, their tablets are optimized for reading and you can use a full cm build from your sd card (it will cost you about 20$ for the image file).

Sony readers (PRS-T1 and PRS-T2) can be rooted so you can access the Android settings. They run 2.2.1 however and e-ink has a very sloooow refresh rate compared to LCD and isn't much good for using apps or games. I root mine in order to install Moon Reader pro and have it sync with my tablet and phone. The T1 and T2 both have wifi but no bluetooth.
What you (and I) really want is something like pixelqi:

I almost modded my MSI wind to have a pixelqi screen but the cost was waaay too much for me.
There have been a few tablets produced but are hard to find, buggy and severely outdated. There are apparently supposed to be a few in the pipeline (coming soon!). http://pixelqi.com/devices

Yeah, that looks interesting. I don't need an e-Ink Android device to support video or games, I have devices for that, I want something to read and write on even when I'm sitting in blazing sunshine. Back in the day I had an HP Ominpro that used a monochrome LCD screen. There are no devices for outdoor usage today.
