Will LTE be as much of a hassle to get working on AOSP as WiMax was?

Shouldn't be. Wimax is dependent on many libs and integrated into the system more whereas lte has its own libs and apks and is supposedly less dependent I think. And aosp supports lte now.

Ok so all the company's are jumping on the 4g band wagon. rooting has done a lot for me. This phone would be unbearabley slow without these custom roms. I have been able to keep up with all the latest updates and technological phone advancements.
What do you guys think 4g entitles? New hardware?
Do dev's think they will be able to get it to function on older devices and get us faster download and upload times.

This would be impossible to force to work with something that wasn't made to work with it already. It's a hardware limitation. Not CPU power, just that it requires a 4G LTE "chip" in our phone instead of the 3G CDMA chip we currently have.
Ok that's crappy looks like we will be a step behind now.

All the phones Verizon has now are 3G. Just wait for a new handset.

I don't mean to be rude, or a smarta**, but seriously, the Eris is one of the lowest-end Android phones to begin with, it's official development stopped at 2.1, no 3G phone on any network can be upgraded to 4G through software unless the hardware was already there, and the Eris isn't even made any more.
The Eris was already many steps behind even before 4G.
The only 4G things Verizon has are two similar USB adapters for 4G internet only on a computer, and it looks like they have the exact same stupendously expensive rates as they did for 3G devices of that sort. I think it's $80+ for 8G per month limit. Ouch.
i rooted my og evo and lost my keys. should this be a concern when rooting the ltevo?
good luck getting that wimax key

The eLTEvo does not use WiMax, so it's not a concern. Not sure if/how LTE works with any similarity, but LTE isn't in NYC yet, so I can't check ('cause I rooted yesterday ).
HTH,

I'd like to know too
I'd also like to know if this is a potential issue ... but I suspect that it isn't since LTE would be a different technology. I would hope it would function the same as, say, 3G vs. EDGE or something like that, where it's just a difference in radio.
AFAIK: For anyone that doesn't know, the original EVO required encrypted keys to join the WiMax network, and some methods of rooting/flashing the EVO didn't preserve these keys early on.
This probably will not be an issue as lte is using a sim card that is embedded in the phone. You also might want to pm a modern and ask them to move this to q&a.

thanks, wasnt sure were to put this. lol...thought rooting would be the best place.
anywho, thanks all. not that i used 4g all that much after rooting. i sure missed the wow factor when i was not in a wifi area.
just wanted to put the topic out there for devs to check into.
Edit: Misread the OP.
No it you don't loose the keys from personal experience from my og evo and the thi thunderbolt, Lte works in a different way kind of like cdma, they will be radios to flash like the OG evo tho

I don't believe that there would be potential issues. If you notice the LTE / EVDO radios coexist seamlessly and I don't believe that it requires a second level of authentication as WiMax did. I have no way of testing and I could be wrong but unless you do something drastic that may affect the radio portion, then I believe that rooting alone should be OK.
I've had this same concern, as I remember all the people who forever bricked their wimax keys on Evo 4g using one if the root methods, and there was no way to know initially because wimax wasn't up and running yet. Just like now.
But, as stated, the LTE radio resides in the SoC, and shouldn't be subject to compromise. From what I understand.

I'm rooted, dev unlocked and I flashed another rom while wiping every partition on the phone and can still connect to lte
Doesn't the Evo LTE have a non removable sim that handles LTE registration?

Before I ask, I just want to set things straight. This is not to complain, ask when AOSP will be out, or troll thread. This is simply to learn more about our specific RIL. So, without further adieu, what makes our RIL so hard to crack? What is specific and special about it that makes it such a pain to work with compared to other phones from OEM's like Samsung, and even other HTC phones. Is it the fact that our LTE radios are so specific and new? Would love to learn more about out RIL situation because I've been wanting to start deving since I had my Droid 2.

As far as I know, only two cdma and phones exist with this type of RIL: Rezound and the Thunderbolt. They are the only CDMA phones that can surf and talk at the same time on network.

GS3 Verizon can surf & talk on 3G. The proprietary LTE RIL is what is making it so difficult. If it was a pure CDMA (3G only) phone, we would have had CM9 100% working MONTHS ago.

If that's true, is there any reason we haven't seen any AOSP-based ROMs with only CDMA and not LTE?

Im using viper rom and I actually love it.
Has anyone tried a custom kernel with this rom?
or should I switch to meanrom and try one.
Useing Enoch ATM, Have also used Evilz and awesomesauce. All work well, you just have to try them all to see which works best for you. Next time, try reading through the thread. Might find your answer alot quicker. ,,,,,,

I settled on Enoch with viper 4g...I actually got better battery life with that setup than I'm getting with cm10 now.

Well if course you did. CM10 is in its infancy still with wakelock issues and no custom kernels. I can easily destroy CM10 battery life with a polished Sense ROM and Evilz running it. But then... I wouldn't have... CM10.

Gotcha...I thought that might be the case. Everyone has indicated that CM10 is just about ready for an official release though so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm back on viper now until the wakelock issues are resolved and 5ghz wifi is supported...that's a must for me because all my neighbors are blowing up the entire 2.4 band so I get noticeably slower speeds.

Why are your neighbors on your WiFi?? Haha I hope this isn't a personal network?
I think the wakelock issue is MUCH better than it was a mere week ago, but I'm sure they'll keep tweaking. We're still in alpha stage (although nearing beta I believe), so things will still improve!

Lol they're not actually connecting to my personal network, but a lot of people in my neighborhood are using the 2.4ghz band in close proximity for their networks. There are at least 5 networks on each of the main non overlapping channels (1,6,11) and even a few on the in between channels, all with pretty decent signals. They are just crowding the spectrum so I get interference from them on my network (i mainly use my phone while sitting outside). I've got the only 5ghz network in the area (that I can see anyway), so I prefer to use that one because the spectrum is clean.
I will definitely be keeping an eye on cm10 though...after my experience with cm7 on the OG, I just won't feel right until I'm back in the aosp world.

To all above. thanks for the information. as for CM10, I agree with the 5ghz wifi. The houses near me all have 2.4ghz causing major channel interference. it sucks. plus, i like viper. Now to install it. Too bad ps3 is 2.4 only
I was wondering if 4g lte was functioning correctly on the international base or if the verizon base makes the "LTE" work better?...my reason for asking is LTE is a verizon thing and is suppose to be better than standard 4g... some roms seem to connect better than others but where I live it is strictly 4g and very seldom do I go to 3g...is there a difference in rom bases that would effect the LTE?...or anything else that may make a better 4g connection or difference?

I think it depends more on which radio baseband u r using.....

JRBXX7 is correct, it really depends on what radio you are on. In AOSP there is a difference in the way service show, there are fewer bars as compared to TW, but the service is still the same.
If you have problems try updating to the newest radio and if you have already updated roll back to the radio you were on. Its really best to test each radio and figure out which is best for you, your phone, and your area. Each phone is a little different and that can change a lot of things that will be fine on other peoples.
