[DEV][INFO] ReservedOdm, 4G, Unlocking and Downgrading - Motorola Photon 4G

I figured it was about time I do a write up about everything we know about ReservedOdm and it's relation to 4G, downgrading and unlocking. For an overview of what ReservedOdm is you can look to this post on the Atrix forum. Essentially ReservedOdm is a one time programmable fuse that is responsible for storing a number of values which relate to Unlock State and OS version.
Now for a few interesting things that we have found out. The unlocked bootloader itself does not seem to care about any values other than the 4 you see at the end of many of the below strings. This appears to be a flag that indicates whether or not the bootloader has gone through the fastboot oem unlock proccess. I will note that merely having the unlocked bootloader flashed does not break 4G on our phones, but having it actually unlocked does.
It would appear that it is possible for ReservedOdm values to be written by both the bootloader and the main OS. This was found out because when people flashed ROM's based on the leaked photon OTA(with bootloader stripped) their phones would have a ReservedOdm value change that would prevent them from flashing any pre-2.3.5 SBF(pudding still work's). It is suspected that the 2.3.5 boot.img is capable of writing these values, since the fuses only changed when using the leaked 2.3.5 boot.img and not with 2.3.5 leak based ROM's that were repacked with an older boot.img.
It would appear that the leaked boot.img does not always change the fuse values, but has happened to some.
The 2.3.5 pudding file that was posted in the unlock thread seems to write a locked 2.3.5 bootloader which prevents both pudding and the unlocked bootloader from being flashed. It has no use and should never bet flashed since all it does is lock phones up.
Since the pudding bootloader seems to be able to be flashed with any ReservedOdm value(but not any bootlaoder), it may still be possible to unlock phones if we can find a way to bypass the bootloader checks on the 2.3.5 bootloaders.
The easiest way to tell if you can unlock is to look at the 3rd non-zero ReservedOdm value. If it is 1 it should be possible to unlock. However if it is 3 it will not be. The 2.3.5 bootloader appears to read this value and will give a sec_exception error if you are trying to flash an older bootloader if the value is 3.
The 2.3.4 SBF's however appear to check the ReservedOdm values and will fail if they are not correct.
I figure I might as well comment on this thread here. From what I can tell this is of no use to us since all the signature checks are respected when you do "fastboot flash rdl.bin". Essentially if you can ramload the rdl you can also flash the pudding file in RSD lite, and if you can't in RSD you also can't here. For electrify users this may be useful under extremely limited circumstances, apparently it can be used to flash pudding from the bootloader of phones shipped with 2.3.5 but not those that have used an OTA. For more info download this.

What SBF was that smg file pulled from? Was it the one I posted?

I think so, maybe the engineering sbf??? It's somewhere in that long post we were working from...

Ok, I think that was pulled from the 2.3.5 SBF most likely, basically just ramloading the locked bootloader. Doesn't really help us much though.

Hope this helps;
Previously unlocked Photon

Do you know if the 2.3.5 leak you flashed has the original leaked boot.img?

All I did to the original leak was remove the AP20 bootloader and any script lines referencing it. I just remembered that I have since flashed joker's 1.3 kernel but other than that there have been no changes that should affect ODM data.

I had a look at the files and the leaked boot.img does seem to be present in both. Maybe it only writes the value under certain conditions.

So no idea on overwriting the bootloader?

Well, it may be possible to flash from within bootstrap, however I do not know how to correctly format the bootloader or if the recovery would need to be modified.

So u think we can bypass the fastboot errors by flashing in bootstrap? Sounds good but hopefully someone can help u complie the sbf into a bootstrap zip...

Ask they cyanogenmod people how to compile. This probably will not be of much use for unlocking though.

how to go from official OTA to a leak build?

Hey people I really need someone here to just point me in the right direction.I've read up but its pretty confusin because noone talks about the official OTA much.
I upgraded from .83 to the 2.3.4 OTA
My bootloader is unlocked too EDIt it's Locked
I have root though.
I've read that if I went straight to OTA I'm screwed as far as using RSD
CAn I use RSD to flash a 2.3.4 ROM or stock sbf?
Will it brick my phone?
I want to just flash something other than this OTA which doesnt let me do really anything can someone at least post a link that can help me with how to flash over the OTA? please any help will be appreciated!!! thanks

Most likely yes. Since you already have the pudding bootloader, it'll be fine. But not every rom works the same, so you gonna take extra care especially when you want to downgrade to lower versions.
I have the at&t OTA that was released a few days ago so you're saying I can use RSD to flash the 2.3.4 leak build?

Well isn't what unlocked bootloaders and recovery are for? Should be able to flash your 2.3.4 alien rom and boot/shutdown and flash the faux kernel. That's if your AT&T.
Besides I hear RSD after bootloader and it's update is a big no no. Especially since many bricks posts "hhhhhheeeeelllllpppp meeee im bricked!?"
Stock OTA 2.3.4/4.5.91 AT&T with just ROOT right NO bootloader UNLOCK?
You just can RSD same 2.3.4/4.5.91 sbf so far YOU CAN NOT RSD ANY MOTO DOWNGRADE FOR EXAMPLE 1.26 1.57 1.83
If you decide to unlock your bootloader you can flash by CWM or moto-fastboot almost anything from dev for ATRIX
so the deal here is to unlock the bootloader

[Q] Motorola Atrix Re-lock Bootloader

I may have to return my ATRIX due to Let'sTalk horrible customer service, but I was wondering if there is anyway to re-lock the Bootloader, or to hide the fact that it says, Unlocked. Thank you in advanced
Also, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, as this is urgent to me and I have yet to see any otherpost relating this topic.
There is another topic like this.
No you can't re-lock and no you can't "hide" the unlock wording. Sorry.
Sent from my AWESOME Atrix
Assume you installed 2.3 using CWM, if that is the case, you can flash the stock 1.8.3. Because the bootloader is not compatible with the unlocked phones, it won't show the "unlocked" text when you turn on the phone. I have tried it when I was trying to get rid if the unlocked text.
The down side is, you won't be able to flash custom ROM until you flash a compatible bootloader.

But downgrading will hard brick the phone.be very very carefully.
Reflash To Stock
Unfortunately, there is no way to relock a bootloader. Hence all of the warnings when you committed
but, if you use 4.5.91 the software at the address below should reinstall the newest stock software...
direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motosupport/source/SoftwareUpdateSelect.asp?country=USA&language=ENS
be careful because Im not sure how motorola update will react to an unlocked bootloader. Ask around...do so at your own risk.
If you want to try a harder, albeit, safer method, and you are sure that you do not have a phone running 4.1.5.91, you can restore your phone to a factory SBF with this process:
briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-system-boot-file-sbf-leaked
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO RESTORE A 4.5.91 system to stock with RSD LITE.
To go to any of the blue webaddresses above, copy-paste them into your browser. Sorry, but I am not allowed to post links yet.
I wonder why nobody has created a CWM downgrade for US Atrixes. NFHimself made one for Bell or international users to go to 2.2.2 Bell and it works really well. Pretty much every partition is replaced. Great for masking that your boot loader is unlocked. Someone should probably do that for ATT to make downgrading less risky than flashing an sbf again...

The downgrading and hard brick problem stems from using the OTA update, so you won't hard brick if for example you upgraded with KP's 4.5.91.
You also should be able to flash the 4.5.91 SBF. You just can't downgrade. There are other threads about this.

The reason the fruitcakes were created and deemed safe by the devs were because it didn't touch the BL, which people believe to be the culprit behind the hard bricks. NFhimself was brave enough to testing flashing the BL via cwm in his gobstopper on international phones, but I don't think any other devs are willing to risk hard bricking their phones by testing that theory on US phones.
There also isn't enough "reward" for doing so because if people want to downgrade they can use a fruitcake. The only gain is to get rid of the "unlock" text. But if you were really that concerned about it despite reading all the warnings of this will void you warranty, you shouldn't have unlocked in the first place.

Hi,
One of the reasons I did up a default CWM of 2.2.2 is to have a means of doing a reset after trying all ATT/ORANGE/TELSTRA/MOVIESTAR/etc firmwares out there which may have side effects or accumulated side effects. Hence the inclusion of the stock bootloader and radio and a write of the extra partitions to clean up whatever mix and match leftovers are in there from the various carriers. The other big one is just to be able to get a Bell OTA applied when it comes out, it will probably be similar to the leak, but best to be safe.
This is more of a Bell/Intl issue as ATT folks tend to run just ATT firmware or flash just boot and system via CWM/fastboot and don't have the same issues as flashing a sbf file.
Both the stock 2.2.2 and leaked ap20 OTA bootloaders from Bell are safe to flash after IHOP, this is not the case with ATT bootloaders and may be the case for any included in a sbf file. Finding out the hard way is not an option.
Cheers!

I would follow the pudding OP. Flash the unlock only sbf file, boot into fastboot and enter the fastboot commands. .sbf files can be trickey and there at helpful hints to curve sbf flashing problems in my noob guide.
As far a the automatic unlock... the Android version doesn't matter so much as your firmware version. 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 are both 4.5.91 firmware I believe. But still suggest using the pudding OP as a guide.
*Edit*
I saw tour post in my thread... that's funny that you claim none of the unlock methods work, b/c what I think you meant to say was that they don't work for you.
How do you think hundreds or thousands of people have unlocked their bootloader? Do you think there's some secret super easy way we just aren't telling you about?

Which method did you have success with?
dont forget to delete the install-recovery.sh in system/etc or you
cant boot into recoveryat startup
and only through rom manager :sly:
I'm running in to the same problem!
I can't get my Bell Atrix 2.3.6 to unlock bootloader
Tried following the pudding noob link but I ran into the problem where RSD lite detected it as "SE Flash Olympus" instead of "NS Flash Olympus"
As I continued reading other ppl's posts down the page, ppl are suggesting project cheesecake or the other link to do the sbf flash which doesn't work for BELL anyways ...
I'm not ready to go with project cheesecake yet cause the directions aren't so straight forward ... (step#3. Using root explorer move those files into their correct places (just follow folder setup, where they came from is where they go) Just where is these "correct places" are?
My device is already rooted and I think this is the only thing stopping me from flashing my rom to CM7
Please help ...
Getting super frustrated!
sorry missed a few posts somehow...
Hi i'm in the same boat, i don't want even try to unlock until i'm sure, my Atrix have 2.3.6 the firm version is not a 4.5.91 is 4.5.2A-51_OLL-48 so i don't want to mess up, i only want the battery fix in CWM, but i understand is only for unlocked phones. Thanks for the help.
Same here. After a lot of reading I am totally confused.
All the guides for unlocking the bootloader are for 2.3.4 / 4.5.91.
My virgin Atrix has stock Bell 2.3.6..
Under Build number it says 4.5.2A-51_OLL-17.8
System Version 45.21.78.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA
Baseband N_01.07.05P
Does this mean that I can still safely unlock the bootloader using pudding's guide and the instructions for unlocking the bootloader on 2.3.4 / 4.5.91 ?
It seems that I am not the only one asking this question.
Someone please clarify that once and for all!
A million THANKS in advance!
Same here
I have the same Question, I have a rooted Atrix 4G no Bootloader unlocked
Android Version 2.3.6..
Build number 4.5.2A-51_OLL-48
System Version 45.2.48.MB860.Latam.en.01
Somebody knows if is safe use the Only unlocker sbf for International for Unlock the bootloader this Atrix???
Thanks

Rooted Electrify user here that REALLY WANTS ICS

So I finally rooted my Electrify(photon), I have insurance and **** and i've taken my phone scuba diving so I really dont care if I brick it at this point(just a reason for me to get a new phone).
Basically my question is, How can i go about getting an aftermarket ICS on it? I can use cynagon right? Someone link me please...? Can I use this? If so, What exactly is unlocking the bootloader?
Im still new at all the terminology, it's been forever since i've been in the Android dev scene....
Thanks a ton XDA!
-Chris
To flash CM9, or any unlocked ROM you need to install a custom recovery, usually clockworkmod. Idr about the electrify, but for the photon you need to flash the pudding unlocked file and run a few CMD lines in order to unlock the bootloader(kills 4g btw) and then you can install a custom recovery and be ready to flash unlocked ROMS. (same general process for electrifiy but iirc different files)IF you are on Android 2.3.5 your SOL.. For the time being atleast as you can't unlock its bootloader. QBKing has a few videos about the Photon on how to unlock, install CWM, and flash ROMS. There REALLY useful for beginners and people who need to be refreshed on what exactly to do. Don't quote me on the exact steps as I have a Photon and never looked too in depth about the electrify, wait for someone else to chime in to verify or search around.
You were a lot of help so far, and yes I am running stock 2.3.5...I installed cwm, but I have yet to unlock the boot loader, and as you stated, I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon. But what exactly does unlocking the bootloader do...?
Sent from my Motorola Electrify using XDA
My understanding is this...
Photon and Electrify 2.3.4 can unlock the bootloader.
Photon 2.3.5 can run something called bootstrap. (There is no legit Photon 2.3.5 from Sprint, but some bleeding-edge MoPho's have flashed 2.3.5 anyway and found themselves in a world of pain.)
Electrify 2.3.5 can do neither. I asked about it here and as of now 143 people have looked at it but haven't replied... Then again, it's the weekend, but I also asked in a topic about the bootstrap a week ago, and nobody there knew either.
So I think with Electrify 2.3.5 rooting is all you can do.
And that's fine, Electrify is beast anyway.
We're supposed to get official ICS in Q2 2012 (or was it Q3?). I don't know fiscal quarters, but Q1 starts in Spring, I think, so I guess summer or late summer?
I don't care about ICS and I don't see why I should. I change launchers weekly and I'm always rotating software on my phone. I'm more interested in getting the bootloader unlocked, but I don't think Motorola has any plans for that.
While it's true you can't unlock the bootloader on 2.3.5 yet, that means that you can't flash kernels and some roms. There are some that work with a locked bootloader. Loki has an Imperium version. Rocko has some versions for locked phones. And there is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575259 from loki. It will strip the bloat and blur from your phone, and give it some tweaks. This with the launcher of your choice makes for a great phone.
Exactly what post above said. I'll just add on saying that without an unlocked bootloader there is no way to get ICS. Use locked roms and try different launchers and you can still have a sweet phone until official ics or we unlock 2.3.5

What is blur and bloat?? And what ROM is best..? As far as locked boot loaders go...
Sent from my Motorola Electrify using XDA
Crispy, Blur is Motorola's enhancement suite for Android. It contains Motorola Home, and all the Motorola apps like the gallery, music player, and widgets. And the stupid lock screen. (I hate Motorola's lock screen. A lot.) HTC's is called Sense and Samsung's is called TouchWiz. They all have one. Very few Android phones are straight-up Android.
Bloat is anything on top of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and the Google apps. This includes Blur/Sense/TouchWiz, technically, though most don't consider those bloat. If you have US Cellular, City ID is the epitome of bloat. It doesn't work as advertised, it's always there, and it will nag you to pay for it sometimes. Bloat on US Cellular phones also includes Tone Room Deluxe, Your Navigator Deluxe, My Contacts Backup, and the QuickOffice demo. Sprint has a whole other set of bloat apps.
Bricky -- So I don't need bootstrap? Or I do?
Crispy again: On your home screen, hit Menu, Settings, and then About Phone. Near the bottom look for "Android version". If it says 2.3.4 below, you can unlock your bootloader. If it says 2.3.5, you cannot.
I know ha, and I'm on 2.3.5 just like youuu:/ but it appears that there are like someee rom's that can be used without unlocking the bootloader...

Yes you need bootstrap. Root your phone, install bootstrap, make nandroid backup in bootstrap , install rom = profit

You need an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER to install a ROM my friend....There are a few decent ROM's that dont require an UL loader, but to get a really nice ROM an unlocked bootloader appears to be greatly needed. I really wish Moto wasn't such a giant douche.

Yes, I ment bootstrap.
Also, how does nandroid backups work? Does it backup EVERYTHING? whats the difference in outcome with Titanium backup VS recovery nandroid backups...?
i really want ics on my electrify.. but i ve a electgrify 2.3.5 with locked bootloader..
is it possible to do it?
I run AOKP build 38 on my mopho, it's a little buggy. My advice is to run one of the slimmed down stock ROMS mentioned previously. Wait for the official build, then there will be a bunch of devs making perfectly tuned apps.
Universal DeBlur-DeBloat Live ROM Conversion is the only ROM that requires root ONLY. It was written to help those that can't even run bootstrap. Think of it as Imperium Initiative without the theme change and custom kernel.

Photon ROMs on Electrify?

Unlocking a stock USCC Electrify tonight using Pudding.
Plan on installing CWM or TWRP (after doing more research or heeding advice).
Not many ROMs say Electrify compatibility is included. Is anyone having any luck flashing these to their Electrify? Is there a universal conversion zip a la the ones used in the D2/DX days?

it's the same phone minus 4g. everything is compatible with one another. no mods needed. just flash away.
be sure to flash this for eri/roaming fix. it's recommended.

you can also check out my site below for some electrify info.
good luck on unlocking. not many people have an electrify that they can unlock.

Thanks for the tips, this is exactly what I figured!
I'm not to nervous about the unlocking process, and I know the device I'll be working with this evening is a completely bone stock 2.3.5 USCC device which appears (from my limited reading) to have the best of chances. Any further tips I should know before this? I'm no novice, so feel free to talk as high level as you want.
And your site looks extremely helpful. I'll read through it in it's entirety by the time I attempt the procedure tonight. Thanks for the heads up!

well 2.3.4 is fully unlockable. 2.3.5 is only unlockable if you have a device that was shipped with 2.3.5. if it was updated or flashed to it you will not be able to unlock it. it's basically permanently locked. no way around it.
good luck!

Wait, 2.3.5 is unlockable if the phone came with it? Has this always been the case? Did I miss a memo?

this has always been the case for the electrify. not the photon.
i don't know what took so long for the photon users to get 2.3.5 but the electrify has had it since nov/dec.

If the electrify is shipped with 2.3.5. Its sv1 so you can unlock it. But if it was updated via ota to 2.3.5. Then its sv2 and unlockable.

Is there a quick way to check the SV level? I assume it might tell me in the bootloader itself?
And thanks for the tips and help again to everyone, very helpful.

IIRC, it will error out, harming nothing, if it can't be unlocked. That's what it says in the instructions I received, though.
My Electrify was shipped with 2.3.5, and I'm running Jelly Bean now. I've flashed more ROMs than I can count in the last week alone.
As for the boot loaders (recoveries), CWM-Recovery that comes with the Electrify.zip unlock pack is the same as Joker's v3, and is your standard text-based, no-touch recovery. You navigate with volume and Power is your Enter. TWRP is all-touch, nice as hell. Both should work for you. TWRP is just nicer looking.
