Sure. You'll need to pop your sdcard out and into your computer to copy files to it.
Last time I used the app androot to get root. Then install superuser. Then install a custom recovery with rom manager (app). You'll probably need an older version of rom manager. The newest one isn't on the market for android 2.1 only the pro key is for some reason.
After that put a custom rom on your sdcard (or beforehand) and reboot to recovery through rom manager. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP just in case. Then wipe and flash your new rom. Be happy.

This one should work. I found it somewhere last week. ROM Manager v.2.5.0.4 http://bit.ly/KiwhIQ Download the app and then side load it.
EDIT: Install Busybox by Stericson.
EDIT: Found this version too. v.3.0.0.7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21743285&postcount=6
Go into ROM Manager and select 'Flash custom recovery'. It should auto detect your phone model (you interact by saying ok) and then flash the recovery.
Oh and I forgot to mention that you can make a Nandroid backup from ROM Manager itself. When you select backup, it'll ask for a file name, then ask for super user access, then reboot to recovery and start the backup. Afterwards it'll boot back into your ROM.
To access your backup again you can either select 'Restore' from ROM Manager OR boot into recovery (see below) and restore that way. I can't remember the exact option you choose, but it's in there.
To get into recovery:
1) Power off the phone. Then at the same time press and hold 'Home' and 'Power'. Keep holding until the recovery screen pops up then release the buttons.
OR
2) In ROM Manager select reboot to recovery.
Once in recovery, you can use the volume rocker to move up and down with the Home or Menu button as enter/select. Or just use the roller ball and clicking it is enter/select.
Most custom ROMs will give you the option to reboot to recovery if you wish.
A reference guide that seems okay: http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-hero-2/

did you pick vibrant when you flashed clockwork with rom manager ??
In order to get into Clockwork, you have to have Clockwork in your internal memory.
Go into the market and install the app ROM Manager. At the top of ROM Manager, there will be a button that says Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Press that and select your phone. Once that finishes, press the button under that, that says "Reboot into Recovery".
If it's your first time going into recovery, then it's going to popup with the stock recovery screen. Once you get to the stock recovery screen, select "Reinstall Packages" and select it with the power button. Now, my memory is a little fuzzy, but it should either take you directly back to the recovery screen, or reboot into the recovery screen, but either way, once it goes back to that same screen, select Reinstall packages again, and it should take you to the Clockwork Recovery.
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered this also. If you still have the update.zip in your internal memory, ROM Manager won't overwrite it. You have to plug your phone in to your computer, delete the update.zip, then go back into ROM Manager and reflash ClockworkMod Recovery. Then continue with what I said above.
(The update.zip that's in your memory right now is the update you applied to root your phone, just so you know. It's not required anymore.)

go to recovery and reinstall packages twice ??
that should take you to clockwork recovery
well im going to tell u wht to do from stock ok as its easier for me!
power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
then after that go here and downoad the update package:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
u wanna download the eclair method of root update package.
then install that on ur internal sd card and go into recovery it should be blue, now click to reinstall packages u should have to do once or twice usually twice. After that it will trun green.
Then go into rom manager and as he said above flash clockwork recovery click vibrant. After that is done u will have clockwork and root access and able to flash any rom
I started using odin before I ever even properly updated to 2.2.... however I do remember having issues like this on a Captivate that was 2.2, I remember that you for sure have to "reinstall packages" twice after flashing CWM. after that you shouldn't have to do it again.....

Okay so im new to this and i have been working all day on trying to get my vibrant modded a little .. My earlier thread shows that i had some trouble and finally got it back to its factory settings .
Now I have upgraded to 2.2 and i rooted it using super one click rooting because I cannot root with an update.zip because I get a signature verification failure. But I realized i need to do this anyways to run a rom even using rom manager ..
So i tried to install 3e recovery installer which is suppose to override this but for some reason it fails to install. It says checking for root: and it fails.
Someone seemed to have the same problem in a different thread and said they deleted some bloatware with terminal emulator but i used termaninal backup (or something like that) to delete some bloatwares but this still did not fix the problem for me.
What is my problem? And what lag fix can i use for my vibrant when i get all this to work?
Fastest way to obtain root :
1. is to flash stock JFD rom (use AIO tools.
2. flash Clockwork recovery through Rom manager (get it from market)
3. Flash any rooted rom (with Voodoo lagfix) through CWM.
And most important thing, if you don't know what you are doing with your phone don't do anything.

i thought you needed root to flash recovery from rom manager...
anyways, my method of rooting is to use the recovery 3e to 2e batch (dont wanna call it an install cause it doesnt install really) and then flash a root update.zip from the 2e recovery you just flashed.
what may be happening to your 3e 2e thing is that you might of forgotten to enable usb debugging... you do this by going in the menu>applications>development>usb debugging on
make sure the phone is plugged in to the computer and debug is on and run 3e to 2e...
then get ahold of a root update.zip and rename it update.zip, put it on the root of your internal sd card (\mnt\sdcard\) and go into recovery (power phone off, hold vol up and down buttons and then hold power button at the same time until you see the vibrant boot screen. when you get into recovery, hit reinstall packages.
sorry for the wall of text; hope this helps.

i assume since it is rooted that you already have clockwork recovery installed.
hold power and vol down to boot into recovery
select wipe cache/factory restore
select install from zip
select the rom i showed you
reboot!
you must put the rom in the root of your tab first
use androzip to move it there

sorry but still a newbie here and i might get annoying to some peeps here but just very cautious on how this would work. so i'm going to ask question
factory restore - does this mean i'm going a clean up and unrooting my device? from the steps above? is the end product going to have the touchwiz update or is this the touchwiz update with a email sync problem? where does the touchwiz update happen? i didn't see that step above?
lastly.. is there a video i watch to see this in action.
galaxytabhacks.com is a bit slow on updating their video's on how to update a rooted GT 10.1 with touchwiz update...
thank you all for the current post and i'm sure that there are many users here that will appreciate this information.. (for all you do please post and cheer on the peeps that helped us out).

ok.. so go to clockwork recovery - i know how with that two options (icons by pressing those buttons)
make a backup - don't know how?
factory reset - i'll read up
install zip from sdcard - done it before
install - if i find it i'll select install
reboot - hopefully
so how does the backup work - any steps.. where can i find that option. thanks again for all these information..
in the main clockword recovery menu select back up and restore ...select backup
these are all in the main menu of cwr... dont worry about the wipe/factory restore just select it and do it.....make sure you put the new rom in the root of your tab first. just like you did with the root.zip when you rooted
put the new rom zip in your tab
boot into cwr
make a back up
do a wipe/factory restore
select install from zip
select choose zip
select the rom zip you downloaded and put in the root of your tab
install
reboot
this is from the first link i gave you
Here is the clockwork mod menu
- Reboot system now (self explanatory )
- Apply update from SDcard. (when you connect your device to your computer it will show up as tablet. The SDcard that cwm refers to is simply your device storage. Always make sure to copy install.zips to the root directory of your tablet storage.) You use this when applying an update for a specific ROM if that is what the ROM developer says.
- Wipe Data/ Factory Reset You should always do this before you install a new ROM or if you are having minor issues with your device.
- Wipe cache partition Think of this as the lite version of whats above . If you do above though it doesn't hurt to do this too.
- Install zip from SDcard Use this to install new ROMs.
- Back up and Restore
- Mounts and Storage use this to connect your device to your computer when in recovery mode. It is also possible to transfer files to your device while in this mode.
- Advanced What you are interested in here is something called dalvik cache, you want to wipe this too before installing any new ROM
- Power off

I successfully performed Unknownforce's hboot downgrade and rooted using Revolutionary. I want to start trying out ROMs but a friend told me I should back some stuff up first.
My first problem is I wanted to take a screenshot of my apps menu just in case I lost them but I wasn't able to do it like I used to with the POWER + HOME buttons.
My second problem is Titanium Backup. Apparently I have to run this in root, but I thought my phone was rooted already? Do I have to run it in a rooted ROM? If so, what's the best way to backup my current ROM and configuration?
I'm so lost. Can someone post a quick and dirty guide to doing these things? It might be easier if I understand the concept and flow of what I should be doing.
Thanks.

If you are rooted, you should have superuser, check your app drawer. Get titanium backup from the market and backup the apps you want or you can just do a full system backup with TWRP (team win recovery). There are many good roms out there. I'm partial to Meanrom. Head over to the EVO 3d developer thread and click on the roll up sticky thread for all the links that can guide you through this.

Super user is an app. It gives permission for other apps to have root privileges, such as titanium backup.
If you do not have superuser in your app drawer then most likely your not rooted. Flash this zip from recovery and you'll be rooted.http://db.tt/4MQNcpdb. Revolutionary does not give you root, it just gives you s-off. I am going to assume that you flashed a recovery during the revolutionary process so I will not go into that.
I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. DISCLAIMER: If you choose to follow these direction and use the zip from above I am not at all responsible for anything that may happen to your phone or sdcard.
1. Go into menu/setting/power and make sure fastboot is unchecked. Fastboot will prevent your phone from booting into bootloader unless you do a battery pull.
2. Power phone off.
3. Boot into bootloader. Do this by holding volume down and power button until phone boots into bootloader. Make sure you hold volume down button first.
4. Once booted into bootloader select bootloader then select recovery. This will reboot phone into recovery. (Navigate bootloader and recovery by using volume buttons and make selection using power button)
5. Once in recovery select "install zip from sdcard"
6. The superuser zip will be in your download folder if you downloaded it directly from phone, select that folder then select the super user zip from the link I provided.
7. Select "yes install zip from sdcard"
8. Once the zip is flashed select "go back" then select "reboot phone".
9. Your phone will boot up like normal. Check in your app drawer for the super user app, if its there your golded. One more note, you can make a backup of your entire setup from recovery. Just select backup/restore and select backup.
ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANY ROMS OR MODS.
After you have made your backup I would suggest that you update your firmware first then look into flashing what ever rom you choose. Go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443592 and look under other firmware bits and you will see xHausx latest everything. That will give you all the firmware, newest prl, radio, and other updates. It will look like this
Firmware w/o hBoot, System, Boot and Recovery partitions. (Must be S-OFF)
http://dev-host.org/svsae25h2v0n/PG86IMG-2.17.651.5_Firmware_Only.zip
MD5:25442C4C8EDDD628391FA6E3CD9924B0
Once you download it check the md5 and verify that it matches up with the one given under the zip file. IF IT DOES NOT MATCH UP DO NOT FLASH IT, COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE. Redownload it and check it again. If it matches up place it on the root of your sdcard and rename it PG86IMG.zip. make sure it is typed exactly like you see it or the bootloader wont see it. Once that is done boot back into bootloader and you might have to select bootloader. It will find the PG86IMG and ask you if you want to update it. You will have to press volume up to select yes. Once your updated make sure you either rename that zip file or place it into a folder so that the bootloader can't see and prompt to update again. You wont be able to get into recovery from bootloader if it still sees a zip file with the name of PG86IMG.

Thanks for all your help. I successfully performed all the steps you mentioned but when I boot up and check the 'Software number' it still says I am on 1.13.651.7. Is that how it's supposed to be?
Also, can anyone help me with the screenshot function? It seems I've lost the ability to take screenshots all of a sudden.
Yes you are still on the old software because of the hboot rollback. That is why it shows an older software number and also why you have lost the screenshot function. You only updated the radio and firmware at this point. You should now be able to use titanium backup to backup all you apps. If you want to save the positing of the app on your home screens use the desktop backup feature also in titanium.
Once that's done your ready to flash a rom. I suggest cleanrom to start out. Go here to find it http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=98 this will be flashed from recovery. Once your apps are backed up make sure you sync your contacts with your Google account because flashing a rom the right way WILL erase all user data. It will not effect firmware or radio though.
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Wipe data/factory reset
3. Wipe cache
4. Go into advanced menu and wipe dalvich cache.
5. Install zip from sdcard. Should also be in your download folder if you downloaded it directly from phone. Choose the cleanrom zip or what ever one you chose and your good to go.
I don't remember if clean rom has titanium backup included in the rom or not. If not once your Google account is set back up just download it again and restore all the apps that you backed up.

Boot into recovery and do a nand back up incase something go's wrong when that's done by now you should have titanium back up installed and back up any apps that you want to keep and then find a ROM that may like and flash it but for you flash the ROM read the post first to find out what's working and what's Knott working and base your desission off that and if you fell thats the right ROM for you try it out and before you flash any Rom's download a super wipe tool I highly recommend it and wipe every thing as normal factory reset wipe dalvic cache scroll down to advance click on it and scroll down to dalvic wipe battery star's wipe and then go back to your download folder and you will install the super wipe tool when thats done your ready to flash your new ROM go back to the download folder and flash the ROM don't install any them's until you've had a full boot and that way you will know what's working and what isn't working. Have been trying to install I9100XXLSJ in rooted SGSII that had I9100ZSKG2 in it. I did a data/factory reset. The phone goes into Android recovery mode <3e> which I understand is a problem. Using SuperOneClick I confirm the phone is rooted and cable is working. So I attempt to get CWM working again by reinstalling. Using either Oden 1.85 or 4.43 I follow the instructions. It appears as though Odin cannot see the phone and gets stuck at <ID:0/010>SetupConnection..
Also I had seen some instructions to get ROM Manager via the Playstore, etc. However I then also discover I have lost any sort of input device, and there is no Swype listed in the apps either, even under disabled apps. So I cannot enter anything when I reboot into the phone either.
So after 2 days and dozens of pages I'm looking for any suggestions.
Ist of all do not use rom manager unless the rom specifically requests it as sgs2 does not like it.
using odin flash siyah kernal 4.1.5 which will root your phone and install cwm. use this http://www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/v4/Siyah-s2-v4.1.5.tar
then using the cable and root directory of your computer which should see the phone drives as usb removeable drive copy the rom zip fileadded link on your sdcard.
then using volume up + home key + power boot into cwm recovery mode.
use install zip, install from sdcard, navigate to where the zip file is, click on it say yes.
let it install, then cleck go back, reboot system now and your done and the rom should be properly installed.

THanks for that. I tried to do that. I get the message "E:Unable to open /sdcard/selfu (no such file or directory). Again, the problem appears to be that the phone goes into system recovery 3e and not CWM when I press volume up + home key + power
