Have been trying to install I9100XXLSJ in rooted SGSII that had I9100ZSKG2 in it. I did a data/factory reset. The phone goes into Android recovery mode <3e> which I understand is a problem. Using SuperOneClick I confirm the phone is rooted and cable is working. So I attempt to get CWM working again by reinstalling. Using either Oden 1.85 or 4.43 I follow the instructions. It appears as though Odin cannot see the phone and gets stuck at <ID:0/010>SetupConnection..
Also I had seen some instructions to get ROM Manager via the Playstore, etc. However I then also discover I have lost any sort of input device, and there is no Swype listed in the apps either, even under disabled apps. So I cannot enter anything when I reboot into the phone either.
So after 2 days and dozens of pages I'm looking for any suggestions.
Ist of all do not use rom manager unless the rom specifically requests it as sgs2 does not like it.
using odin flash siyah kernal 4.1.5 which will root your phone and install cwm. use this http://www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/v4/Siyah-s2-v4.1.5.tar
then using the cable and root directory of your computer which should see the phone drives as usb removeable drive copy the rom zip fileadded link on your sdcard.
then using volume up + home key + power boot into cwm recovery mode.
use install zip, install from sdcard, navigate to where the zip file is, click on it say yes.
let it install, then cleck go back, reboot system now and your done and the rom should be properly installed.

THanks for that. I tried to do that. I get the message "E:Unable to open /sdcard/selfu (no such file or directory). Again, the problem appears to be that the phone goes into system recovery 3e and not CWM when I press volume up + home key + power

Hi there; long time lurker, first time poster.
I've recently been trying to flash the kernel on my device using the CF-Root kernel. My kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKK2-CL726411, so I downloaded the corresponding rooted kernel file "KK2", extracted, and flashed using Odin (with no errors; green light with PASS displays).
Now, I'm led to believe that in doing so, busybox and superuser will also be installed. However, I cannot seem to find them in the applications list. I also cannot run apps like Titanium Backup, which require root access.
Each time I boot/reboot my phone, the yellow triangle does display. So what am I missing? I have also tried using the Superoneclick method, but after rebooting, I still don't seem to have root access.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Try again. Ensure no KIES processes are running (including process in PC Task Manager)
Make sure you are following Chainfire's instructions exactly. )
Flash CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar (from the attached zip) as PDA in ODIN, without repartition. Done
Edit: You will not see busybox, but should see Superuser

Thanks for the quick reply. I had retried it twice before, but decided to try it again once more. I made sure no KIES related processes were running.
I attached a screenshot of my Odin after flashing. I have followed Chainfire's thread word-for-word. =S
Any other suggestions as to what i should try next?
Thanks!
Have you tried a different kernel?
You could try flashing Siyah kernel v2.6.8 .tar with Odin: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/01/21/siyahkernel-v2-6-8/
Is rooted with CWM recovery v5.xx

If you have managed to get CWM Recovery installed, but for some reason still don't have (or lost) root access;
Download the attached SuperUser.zip (don't extract)
Save to internal sdcard (remember what directory, if any)
Boot into CWM Recovery (Power off phone -> Vol Up + Home + Power). Navigate (depending on which CWM version) vol up/dn, maybe power to back or select, home to select. Try menu soft key for up & back button back)
Navigate to Install zip from sdcard / internal sdcard............ / SuperUser.zip
Flash & reboot

Hmmm.. was I flash this in the exact same way as I did with the CF-Root? It's now giving me a boot loop.
Once I get the phone back up and running, I'll retry this flashing with this kernel.

Thanks for the reply! I'll give this a try if reflashing the kernel doesn't work.
Maybe factory reset, wipe cache and advanced / dalvik in recovery before flashing.

Okay, I've gotten rid of the boot loop. I've been trying to figure out why I couldn't get something so simple to work, but I've finally found the answer.
I changed my usb connection from the front header to the rear i/o port, and retried the kernel flash. Problem solved.
These past two days have been so frustrating haha. Thanks so much for your help guys!

Sure. You'll need to pop your sdcard out and into your computer to copy files to it.
Last time I used the app androot to get root. Then install superuser. Then install a custom recovery with rom manager (app). You'll probably need an older version of rom manager. The newest one isn't on the market for android 2.1 only the pro key is for some reason.
After that put a custom rom on your sdcard (or beforehand) and reboot to recovery through rom manager. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP just in case. Then wipe and flash your new rom. Be happy.

This one should work. I found it somewhere last week. ROM Manager v.2.5.0.4 http://bit.ly/KiwhIQ Download the app and then side load it.
EDIT: Install Busybox by Stericson.
EDIT: Found this version too. v.3.0.0.7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21743285&postcount=6
Go into ROM Manager and select 'Flash custom recovery'. It should auto detect your phone model (you interact by saying ok) and then flash the recovery.
Oh and I forgot to mention that you can make a Nandroid backup from ROM Manager itself. When you select backup, it'll ask for a file name, then ask for super user access, then reboot to recovery and start the backup. Afterwards it'll boot back into your ROM.
To access your backup again you can either select 'Restore' from ROM Manager OR boot into recovery (see below) and restore that way. I can't remember the exact option you choose, but it's in there.
To get into recovery:
1) Power off the phone. Then at the same time press and hold 'Home' and 'Power'. Keep holding until the recovery screen pops up then release the buttons.
OR
2) In ROM Manager select reboot to recovery.
Once in recovery, you can use the volume rocker to move up and down with the Home or Menu button as enter/select. Or just use the roller ball and clicking it is enter/select.
Most custom ROMs will give you the option to reboot to recovery if you wish.
A reference guide that seems okay: http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-hero-2/
I am no longer supporting this version of CF-Root. I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries. I will still be providing roots by way of CF-Auto-Root (click). The downloads in this thread will remain available, I just won't be updating them.
.
.
.
.
.
If you just want to get your device rooted ASAP, see this thread instead: CF-Root. It includes this recovery in it's installation, and automatically installs root. This thread is for the recovery only.
Check your device model ! Settings -> About device -> Model number. This stuff is made for the GT-I9300 and GT-I9300T, if your model number has a suffix, it may not work, or if it is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !
Not compatible with ROM Manager ! Use the CWM Manager provided instead.
Here's my port of CWM 5.5.0.4 to the SGS3. There's a second version number in the thread title, as I think there will be multiple versions.
As is the case with every SGS release (it happened with the SGS1 and the SGS2, and now again with the SGS3), CWM source isn't built to correctly deal with our setup (internal storage vs sdcard). I had to make a number of changes to the source to get it working correctly. From my tests, it all seems to work, but it's quite possible I missed something (report issues).
(I have tested backup/restore to both internal and external storage, wipes, installing zips from both internal and external, etc, all works as I expect it to)
Aside from the base fixes, there is currently nothing fancy about this build of CWM. I'm not sure if the SGS3 suffers from the brick bug (that SGS2 and Note have), but I patched out the relevant code to be sure (I think). Backups are rather big, system alone is about a GB.
I'll do more some other day!
Instructions - Short
Extract the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y zip file, to get the tar file you can flash in Odin as PDA.
Instructions - Long
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Unzip the attached CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.zip file
- If you end up with a recovery.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-SGS3-CWM-vX.X-vY.Y.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it.
Navigation
In recovery, use the volume buttons to move up/down, power or home button to select, and back to go back.
Manually rooting
Note: if you're just flashing CWM to root, it is easiest to follow this thread instead: CF-Root. It includes this recovery in it's installation, and automatically installs root.
Applying root once you have this recovery installed is easy.
- Go to the SuperSU thread and download the CWM-SuperSU-...zip file attached to the first post
- Put the zip file on your sdcard (either internal storage or external sdcard will do)
- Put your phone in recovery mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-up + home + power to boot - release power after one second) - Alternatively, use the "adb reboot recovery" command
- Select "install zip from sdcard"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard" (depending on where you put the zip)
- Select the CWM-SuperSU-...zip file
- Done !
Root in ADB
If you root through recovery and are not running a custom kernel, chances are that ADB does not have root when Android is booted. You can enable root in ADB even on stock kernels by using the adbd Insecure app. This does require the device to be rooted!
When flashing a new firmware ...
... you probably want to keep recovery. Most stock firmwares include the stock recovery, so if you flash those with Odin this recovery will be overwritten. Alternatively, if you are using Mobile ODIN to flash, first open the firmware files you want to flash using the "Open file ..." entry (sometimes several times), then select the "Recovery" entry and press the "Clear" button in the popup. This way, recovery will not be overwritten.
CWM Manager
Also attached is CWM Manager, a tool I wrote to manage my CWM kernels and recoveries. Download the APK to your device and open it to install. You may need to go to Settings -> Security -> Device Administration first and enable Unknown sources.
Note that v1.1 or newer of my CWM build is required to use CWM Manager.
Flash counter
To reset the flash counter to 0, see the Triangle Away thread.
OTA's
Since v1.5, flashing OTA updates is supported directly using this recovery. You should however be aware that said OTA will most likely re-install stock recovery and remove this one. Furthermore, it may keep doing so every time you boot. CF-Root v6.3 (and newer) will try to disable this, it is advised you flash that. Just reflashing this CWM recovery will likely not help.

Recovery installed successfully.
But when I run ROM Manager, it says that I don't have any CWM installed. For example, if I choose the option "Copy current ROM", it issues the following message: "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing!. Install the recovery through ROM Manager first."
First i want to ask if i the phone must be rooted before installing ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 - "v1.5"
I have installed the samsung usb drivers and ADB drivers and enabled usb debugging on phone. I tried to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 - "v1.5" following the instructions on the forum but when all was finished in odin and the icon went green (PASS) and the phone rebooted i powered it off and then powered it on with vol up + power + home but the phone went to the Android system recovery and not to the ClockWorkMod Recovery
If you flash with odin correctly HOLDING home + vol up + power should get you to CWM recovery , where you can install SU access (root)
If not, try first to turn off device , take out battery , insert it again and then reboot with buttons hold. if STILL nothing try to flash with odin again
I managed to install the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0 with odin v3.04 and tested it works fine but still no ClockWorkMod Recovery. I tried to flash agian the CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.5 with odin v3.04 and same problem. when all the process is finished and i go to recovery menu it shows the Android system recovery
weird , have you tried popping out the battery for a couple of secs ?
yes
Try the toolkit.
can you tell me step by step instruction for the toolkit because it's a little bit confusing? Which option should i choose if i want to install ClockworkMod Recovery?

i had a similar issue when i rooted using CF Root. i ended up updating Odin to 3.04 and using CF Root 6.3, worked a treat.
I'm having the same issue. I've tried the toolkit on my windows machine (option 4). Then tried Heimdall on my mac and got the same results - No CWM and only stock recovery. Oddly enough, my Odin mode says "custom" for binary (count 6) and system status.
Coming from an HTC phone with fastboot I'm used to ./fastboot and ./adb'ing :O
I'm following step by step process to root my gt-s5310 using ODIN 3.07. Started from download mode and connect to the PC is no problem at all. ODIN finished with the GREEN PASS. After the successful flash of the CWM file in Odin, do you let it auto reboot? Many Samsung phones have a built in script that checks to see if the recovery partition has been modified and then reapplies the factory recovery file back to it. Try this: Have the phone in hand with fingers on button combo for recovery (most Samsung phones with physical home buttons are typically Home + Volume Up along with Power, but you won't need to do the ) and when it reboots, hit the combo for recovery and it should boot to CWM, then you'll be able to do a nandroid backup and install the stuff you want. If you want to keep the stock rom and CWM recovery, you'll have to get root access and remove the script.
