First Day Note Impressions... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I managed to snag a Note. My two cents, quickly, after the first day:
1) Yes, it's big. Real big.
2) Screw the haters! The first time you fire it up and browse with it? I almost creamed my pants.
3) I dearly, dearly missed the MSD slot after using a Nexus and a 900 for EDC the last couple months. Now that I have a 64 inside this beast? Even better!
4) I forgot how much I revile TW. I forgot many, many things about GB. ICS cannot come fast enough.
4.1) I know, I know, just root and flash. I don't know of a way to root/rom/flash/fun/win on Android without a computer.
5) Go see one in person before you buy, it'll help with the size shock.
6) Nexus, SGS3 or Note? I'm always partial to stock Android and I love me some Nexus. I cannot mention the utter fail of the SGS3 or run the risk of giving myself fits or rage. But once you start browsing and using the screen on the Note? Very, very close call between the Note and Nexus.
7) The resolution is fantastic, the screen is fantastic. Both are more than acceptable and have my highest possible recommendation. Nexus level screen.
Hope that helps anyone on the fence...

Scratches.
For your own good, get some sort of screen protector. Do it now. I had to return my first note after a couple days because of incredibly heavy scracthing on the middle left part of the screen. My new one faces this problem (even though I used a screen protector + flip case) and ATT refuses to replace it. It also has dead pixels be very wary.I think it is also important for me to note (hehe) that I treated it as a baby during this month of having it. No matter how I handle it another 10 scratches for me at the end of the day. Didn't touch it all day? 10 scratches. Had it isolated in a 100 x 100 ft room with nothing else in it? 10 scratches. Invented a gravityless alternate universe to store it in? 10 scratches. Dropped an atomic bomb on it? 10 scratches.

+1 on 2

WiFi isn't quite as good on the Note as my Nexus. I cannot get a couple hotspots to connect at all that I normally visit. It loops: looking for the IP, obtaining it, then not connecting. Perhaps it's my unit or GB instead of stock ICS? Something to watch for if you are a potential buyer

As another viewpoint, I have had this phone since day 1 and have never had a screen protector or a case on this thing. I abuse this phone heavily. I slide it in and out of my jeans pocket 30 times a day even dropped it a couple times.
I don't have one little scratch on it. This thing is amazingly tough and scratch proof. IMHO and experiences.

Never had a screen protector on my note or galaxy s 2,never had a scratch

Why do you even mention SGS3 ... a phone that isn't out?

2 weeks without a protector and no scratch. Now I'm using ghost armor and still don't have any

Because it factors in to the equation. Ignoring the flagship Samsung phone when giving advice is being negligent to a potential buyer.
Day and a half wish? Chrome has got to be drool worthy fantastic on this thing.

Couple of things to try, the first is easy enough, try a factory reset on the phone. Even if its stock and freshly out of the box, I tried this at the suggestion of a friend and it resolved this problem for me on HIS router (I bought it and the first place I went to was his house to show it off .
The second is not so easy to fix if you dont have control of the router, but a router reboot may be in order. In fact, you might even have to do a factory reset on the router itself. Also, make sure the router firmware is up to date (probably wont help with this situation specifically but not only is it something you should check on but a firmware update might specifically fix this issue depending on your router).
On my own home router, I never was able to resolve this problem, I rebooted the router, did a factory reset on the router, the stock firmware was already up to date so I couldnt do anything there, I even installed custom firmware (DD-WRT) on the damn thing and my phone would connect and obtain an IP and then immediately drop the connection. This was a D-Link router.
What I ended up doing was buying another router (an Asus for around $100 if memory serves) about a month ago and I now have no issues. We have over 30 devices in the house connected at any given time (OUR devices, the router is password protected using WPA/2) and everything is working great. Also getting much better transfer speeds and buffer bloat on the router seems to not be an issue anymore.

Have you tried manually adding them by name? Just "forget" any login information, then select "Add Wi-fi Network," and type in the name of the network you're trying to log onto. For whatever reason, this sometimes works.

I've had similar experience with my Note. No case or screen protector, I carry it in my front jeans pocket all day. As far as my eyes can tell, the front glass is still flawless. The back plastic is getting a bit scuffed from setting it on my desk, but that's it. Loving this phone!

Ha you think it's big?
Use it a few days and go back to your old phone then you'll know what is "small"

Connects to three other WiFi points fine except for the main one I use. My GN connects flawlessly to all of them. ICS cannot come fast enough.

Did you try any of the fixes suggested on this thread?

After using this Note for a week I have two completely different thoughts:
I've gotten used to the size. So much so I actually prefer it case less and that's a first. The screen, browsing, watching, creating, etc. is the finest experience I've ever had on a mobile. It's simply fantastic.
I want to charge both AT&T and Samsung with crimes against humanity. I had forgotten how bad TW actually is. How awful AT&T bloat is. So much so it's literally destroying my love for the screen.
There is simply no reason we should not have stock ICS on this. No reason for full control of the radios. I should be able to pop whatever SIM I want in here and play. No reason NFC should be gimped. I should be able to deactivate the hard buttons at the bottom and run soft ones.
The question I have now is to sell or try and find a computer that I can borrow and find a stock ICS ROM.

Problem with screen (8Bit color/bleeding)

Hi
I am having problems with my screen. Looks like the LCD is faulty. Trying to resolve with Samsung Support, but thought I would ask here if this is a known problem or if there is a simple fix.
It looks like the grayscale colors are not right, I installed a screen tester and the grayscale bars have a red tint. all other tests in the appl look ok. however pictures/video's all look like they are 16bit color and icons look like they are bleeding
Here is a picture of the problem
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/836/atab1large.jpg
Any thoughts?
Eric...
Looks like a faulty panel !
Take it back to where you bought it and have them exchange it.
Sent from my Galaxy10.1 TouchWiz/ADWex equipped Starship.
I have exactly the same problem Tablet has been bought in the United States and now I am in Europe. Samsung won't repair/replace it anywhere in Europe. Only US Samsung offered to help me but the tablet needs to be at a United States address. Now I have to send it back to someone I know.. will take months
Well my problem disappeared.... not really sure why/how, but I have been playing with different ROM's etc. and I THINK it might of been when I did a permissions repair, but...
Plus i'm 99.3% sure I had the problem before I rooted/ROM'd
Another reason to stop loading these 3rd party ROMs. I dont understand why people are installing these 3rd party ROMs to begin with. The stock ROM is by FAR the most stable and error free ROM you can use. Most of the issues people are starting threads about would have NEVER occurred if they just stuck with the stock ROM.
I get this too now. I've been pootin' around with different roms for a while, no problems. Then a few days ago while I was running GalaxyTask 8.0 the "bleeding" started slowly. First around the edges of things, but then the entire screen. The colors seem to color-cycle into the end result. I figured it might be the rom so I tried a stock one. And then I tried a complete stock reset with stock recovery and factory reset - the works. No change. It's still like this. And in the bootloader and the recovery too. Sometimes it gets moments of clarity, everything is fine, but only for a few seconds.
Busted tablet? I bought it while in the US this summer, so taking it back will be an issue. Getting a Transformer Prime late next week *fingers crossed* but still. I was hoping to sell this fully functioning :|
Example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120921/IMG_20111214_214938.jpg
I had the same issue. Also bought in US while I live in Hungary. I had to send it back to my relatives who took it back to Samsung and they replaced it in warranty. Fortunately, I was travelling there by the time we got the new one and I could take it back home with me. This seems to be a weakness of the tablet. My replacement unit has been working nicely ever since.
I had the same issue with an August build stock tablet from the US.
Thankfully Samsung UK took it in for repair and ended up replacing it as it was apparently unrepairable.
My issue used to show up with 60+ minutes of continued use. I think it was thermal related as the warmer it was the quicker it seemed to develop the fault. putting it on standby for a few minutes used to clear it, but the problem would come back quickly as it was warm.
Anyone know how Samsung handles this issue if the device it out of warranty? Mine is acting up pretty bad and I haven't been able to find anything on here about repairing the issue on your own. It will be clean view for a few minutes and then the color bleeding some background effects kick in making the tablet a large paperweight. I've been looking for and excuse to get the 10.1 Note, but it sure would be nice to get a few bucks for this since it's in perfect condition... besides the screen.
My 10.1 is starting to develop the same issue. Never been rooted, always on a stock rom. I've never dropped it or banged it around. It also seems to start happening afternlonge usage. First imsee a few purple lines across the screen and then the entire scren turns to 8bit colors, etc. Once I turn it off and back on it goes back to normal. Annoying, especially simce I bought it 13 months ago so I'm guessing it's past the warranty period.

If you're out of warranty you're on your own. Samsung won't repair or replace it for free.
At this point I'd just like to know how to fix it and what it would cost, ballpark. I haven't been able to find anyone who's delt with it, bar throwing their tablet.

My 10.1v just went.
Guys, I'm having the same issue today. And here is the fix:
1. Take out the back cover.
2. Look for the black cable that have SET printed on the end.
3. Removes both ends and then reconnect.
4. Push/rub at both ends while the screen is on. You'll notice the tint-colour of the LCD will change. Stop when it looks normal again then put a tape on top to hold the cable in that position
4. Put the cover back and enjoy your Note 10.1 again
Good luck!

Wireless issues in Prime delivered 3rd Jan 2012

Well, it looks like my luck has finally ran out.
Yesterday morning wireless started dropping out, connecting to a wireless N router (Netgear DGN2000) that has performed fantastically for all the time I've had it, and continues to do so. Signal on every device in the house is excellent on the following devices:
MacBook
iPhone
SGS2
Acer Aspire One netbook
Whilst slightly slower than my other devices, I used to use my Prime all over the house without issue (Honeycomb and then ICS) especially in the bedroom. On Saturday morning though, I started seeing regular dropouts at least once every minute. The device hasn't been dropped or anything like that, but even so if I had to hazard a guess I'd say that one of the wifi antennas has failed.
There are no other networks close to mine in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, but even so I moved the network around the channels to see if it made any difference. Nope, no difference. Rebooted both the Prime and my router several times, no difference. Even when very, very close to the router I still get the drop outs on the Prime, which points to a hardware issue as far as I can tell. Wifi Analyser's graphing is absolutely full of troughs, it's that bad. I'm nearly 100% sure that it's nothing to do with any new devices being introduced locally as no other devices performance has been impacted at all.
So anyway, it looks like I'll be returning my Prime to my local Curry's store tomorrow night for a replacement! I'll be wiping it before hand, so I may just check again after the wipe to make sure it's not some sort of wireless bug. I just hope I don't end up with any new issues with a replacement!
Looks as though maybe the pogopins have dislodged slightly and aren't making perfect contact like before. Try pressing on the top left and right of the top bezel.

Thanks for the advice, but I tried that earlier this evening to no avail. Whilst I agree it's possibly an issue with the pogopins, I put as much pressure on the pin points as I was comfortable with (which was a fair deal) and it made no difference. At the same time, the device has been treated very, very well; and so I wouldn't have expected them to have dislodged so easily anyway.
I'm certainly not willing to do that on any sort of regular basis. I'll get it exchanged and if I have any further issues, I'll give up at that point. I love the tablet and all, but I don't think I'll have the patience of some of you other guys that have been stuck in product return hell.

Weird Interference/Reception Call Issues on my Amaze

I'm having this weird issue. When I am in my house and on the phone, people complain that I am "cutting in and out" and that there's weird reception noise. My calls also often get dropped or don't go through - while in my house. Outside my house, everything appears to be working fine (so far). And even in my house, there appear to be levels of issues. I was speaking to someone while I was upstairs and it was fine but once I went downstairs, he complained that he couldn't hear me and I was cutting in an out. I went back upstairs and it was mostly fine. We continued chatting while I moved around the house and he was able to consistently tell if I was upstairs or downstairs based on the call quality. This issue first appeared 4 days ago - never had this issue before in the past 7 months I've had my phone.
No one else in my house really seems to have the same issue - although one briefly complained about some minor issues for one day. Everyone else has blackberrys and has not seemed to have any problems.
I called the phone company (Wind) about this issue on Friday. Since I was worried about having issues during the call, I called them from my landline which is under Bell I believe. I spoke with someone for about 10 minutes and she then transferred me to a different line to someone who would be able to help me. I try speaking to him and he says "Sir, you're cutting in and out." and he keeps having trouble hearing me the entire time I'm speaking to him. Remember, this was on my landline. (Although I should mention, no one else has complained about issues speaking to me on my landline since, though the problem with my Amaze is still apparently present.)
So because of that and the fact that I don't seem to have issues outside, I don't believe that the problem lies with the Amaze or Wind - although I may be more affected by whatever the problem is because of one of the two. I'll probably go to a Wind store at some point and ask them as well (the guy on the phone was no help really) - but I don't know what they're going to say, considering my phone will probably work fine there.
Does anyone have any idea why I would only be having this issue in my house and what it might be? Maybe some neighbors put up something that would mess with my reception? - if so what might that be? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
I get poor reception in my house and office as well... And I'm in a metropolitan area. I just wrote it off as a weak radio, because everyone else's phones work fine in same locations
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
Are you on ICS, or did you move to it once you started having the issue? I have fluctuating signals on the ICS radio.
If not, I would call the provider again. It's their problem to solve.
Yea, you have to explain what exactly you are running on your phone..
Rather than JUST look at it as reception issues, think about any new technology you may have bought around the same time you started having issues - new wireless router, new cordless phone, etc. There are many signals besides the frequency devices advertise(cordless phone could be 900-2400mhz, but cause issues on many other frequencies) that may effect your phone but NOT other people's.
If you did upgrade to ICS, and the issues started when you upgraded, it could be the new radio is an issue for you - if it is a deal breaker the best answer is to downgrade to gingerbread till the OFFICIAL ICS comes out, they may make some big changes between the leak and the final official update..
I don't have issues with my cell reception anywhere I go, but I have had calls dropped in a way I never have before - not often by far - but I'll get some weird noises and the call drops. I think it is my phone since it has happened with multiple people, but it doesn't happen often enough for me to REALLY care..

Well, this did first start on the day that I got new batteries (Anker) for my Amaze... though I'm not sure why that would make any difference. Also got a new sd card the day before that. But nothing new in my house that should interfere afaik. But I'm wondering if my neighbors got something...
On a side note, I was on the phone today away from my house and the person I was speaking to seemed to hear inteference/reception issues for a moment. But I'm not sure if he really did, considering I was in a noisy place but there is the possibility that this is in fact a phone issue rather than a location issue...

Okay, if you are on stock, and having issues outside the house, check the battery door(the entire back cover) to make sure each contact on the cover is making GOOD contact - if any of the pins that stick off the phone are bent down too much, or if they are too dirty to get solid contact, that could explain your issue.
A weak signal because of the case would make a more dramatic effect when you go into a part of the house or neighborhood that gets less signal, but may otherwise be okay. If dirty clean it with a q-tip with rubbing alcohol(both the connecting pins AND the contacts on the inside of the case), if not try taking a tiny flathead(for glasses repair) or something similar size/shape and insert it underneath each of the 10 copper connectors and BARELY lift a hair, just enough that it will make a better connection.
I say this because if you messed with the battery right before this happened, maybe one of those connectors got altered/dirty when you put it back together.
That certainly might make sense. I rarely took off the battery cover before getting new batteries and sd card. I will try that, thanks!

The metal tabs are REALLY sensitive, so do be careful, a tiny bit is all it takes.. and thinking about it, the edge of one of those cards for your keychain may be best.
If you look at the pic below you will see the wear marks from taking mine on and off(some were REALLY bad)- bending the tabs up a little bit made better contact and seems to make a big difference. I ordered a new one from HTC(you can replace each accessory for free, check the accessories area for the thread with details, if this helps maybe you should get a replacement?) - either way it can't hurt as long as you don't go too far with it..
I originally read this tip on the tmobile or htc forums(I can't remember), but it does make sense..
So I checked like you said. I sprayed air all over the case and then I noticed that there was a hair sitting right on top one of the bottom connectors... I removed it with tweezers, sprayed some more air and then waited to see the results. (This was two days ago). So far, all my calls seem to be working pretty much perfectly. One person thought that he heard a tiny bit of static at one point, but the majority of my phone calls have been without complaint. So it looks like that fixed it... Amazing what a little hair can do... Thanks!

Good deal pretty crazy it was a hair, I would have thought something more substantial than that!

SGSIII took a 2ft. fall, and now is NLW. TWO FEET! Can anything be done?

Dropped from my night stand to the floor. Even has a case on it. Will no longer turn back on, tried everything possible. I'm a little confused, I know the phone wasn't made from the greatest material, but this is a little ridiculous. I pre-ordered it for $750 a couple weeks before release, I can't accept that my investment is ruined from a very minor accident.
Probably a long shot, but can anybody think of what could have possibly happened inside the phone that could cause this non-operation? Perhaps something came loose or just broke off? I'm so desperate, I just might disassemble the whole thing and put it back together out of hopelessness. I'm going to contact the UK Samsung soon as I can and see if there is anything I can do, but I doubt that will get anywhere. See I KNEW the ONE time I didn't buy an Otterbox for my phone, something like this would happen. The SGSIII is just too damn big for an Otterbox.

Yup did it all, even brought it into AT&T and they tried putting a different battery in it from another SGSIII. Nothing comes on, no LED, no sounds. Very strange, the only thing I can possibly think is that it is defective because no phone in existence should stop working so easily.

I've heard of Galaxy S3s suddenly losing power altogether ie. totally unable to power on etc. My telco CSO told me that it was a hardware defect found in the first batch of phones. That might be your problem and the fall could just be a coincidence. Definitely request for a replacement. And maybe get an Otterbox this time? I'm using a Commuter and I don't find it too bulky at all! Cheers.
Mine took a 4 feet chest height lunge screen first on the tiled floor during the first week i got it and there are no scratches, dents or cracks it still works perfectly today probably the hardware defect he mentioned.

I've yet to get ahold of the UK Samsung, as the US Samsung doesn't handle the GT-I9300. My backup phone has an issue calling the international number, so as soon as I get another phone I'll have to give them a call and see what they can do.

That would make a lot of sense, seeing as a lot of other people have had their share of drops with the SIII and it still works fine, as most of todays smartphones should. I really hope Samsung will be able to do something about it, I recently lost one phone I just bought in the mail (sent to wrong address, stolen off porch, $430), and if I lose this one that's about $1200 in phones in the past 2 months.

Before I buy...

I am about to buy this tablet...
But now I see a lot of threats here with many issues...
So now I am a little worried about this tablet instead of excited...
Question:
Is this tablet any good at all, or is it just bad quality all together ?
Would you rather have bought a different tablet, knowing what you know now ?

Having only had it mine for a week, I've had 0 issues. Build quality seems exceptional on my 32gb WiFi model.
I personnaly tried many tablet, it's just a confort for design and power, it's just the best for me, i was htc addict and now i love Sony
I found the build quality to be very shoddy on the one I got, and I did end up returning it. The backing was coming unstuck, the screen flexed, there was a shadow along the bottom edge of the screen, a dead pixel, erratically sensitive screen, the breaking of Firefox Sync by the OS and these diagonal lines on the screen that really annoyed me.
However, I don't regret being able to try it, and Sony Canada made it very easy for me to return. If I had gotten a non-defective one, I would have been reasonably happy and waited for the Firefox Sync issue to be fixed.
If your excitement still outweighs your misgivings, just make sure wherever you buy it from has a good return policy and, better still, lets you open it up in-store and make sure the more common hardware issues (unsticking back, flexing screen, non-flush port covers) are absent.
Good luck.
i'm a little biased because i got mine with my sony card rewards points (and the 32gb model for 480 dollars worth of rewards points at that), but i'm definitely disappointed in this wifi vs bluetooth issue. no one seems to be able to figure it out and there are tons of people with the issue. basically once a device is connected via bluetooth, the wifi dies. it shows its still connected with a strong signal, but nothing will load. if i had paid cash and didn't have a sony card, i'd probably have returned it by now... which sucks because otherwise i really love the thing.
Very pleased with my model. SGP311.
No build issues, WIFI issues or anywhere else for that matter. Have used several tablets and this is the only one I've stuck with.
One very happy customer - highly recommended.
Has there ever been a device released without issues? Just protect yourself by always buying from a place with a convenient return policy, especially if you're spending this much money. Or buy at a place with the longest return policy (generally 14 days I think), and see how you like it for yourself.

This is the best tablet I have ever had. No regrets. Even though I have had a few wifi issues where it disconnects, it reconnects quickly. Plus it only happens when I am fairly far away from the router.
I ordered mine directly from Sony (a US 312). I've noticed no build issues (much nicer than my Nexus 10 actually) or wifi problems. Rooting was easy, and after freezing the stuff I don't use, I'm getting a solid 10 to 12 hours or use out of it between charges. I'm using the charging doc (to avoid the micro USB port) as well as the Sony case (which is overpriced but still very nice). Best tablet I've used.
Regards,
John Francis
Apart from battery taking really too long to fully recharge (6 hours) I can't complain about this tablet. Everything works as it should. I totally recommend it!
The only problem i am having is my computer will not recognized the tablet what so everrrr
Hi people,
I hope the OP don't mind me jumping aboard his thread with questions on my own.
I'm in the market for a tablet too (my first one) I recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 for my wife and I'm thinking about this one for myself.
My only concern is the WiFi issue since I'll buy it in the US but then I'll take it out of the Country so return it would not be possible.
How common is this issue?
I read some people saying it's not the tablet, but the router and setting should be changed while others say that Sony CS told them to return the tablet for an exchange (admiting then that the problem is in their product).
Changing settings on my own router would be possible (if that in fact solves the problem) but what about if you are using other sources like WiFi in public places?
Since I'll be using WiFi more than anything, should I buy this with confidence or should I go for other options? After all I think the major point that draws me to this tablet is the video quality (is it that noticeable compared with other tablets?)
Thanks for any input,
I dont know how some people got thier xtz with problems when i got mine with zero issues..
Anyway, stop asking bro and get one, if our life is a game this could be a weapon of mass destruction lol

i say don't buy
I am returning mine. The thing won't charge, in fact it looses battery, when its plugged in and in use. I had the Time Warner Cable app on and had tv on in the background. The thing was plugged in. After a few hours the tablet died. Ridiculous.

My life might be a game but if it involves throwing $500 to the bin then I don't want to play...

Thanks for sharing I'm more linning to look for something else then.
If I was able to return it then I might gamble but I'm already stuck with another electronic I bought and I can't return because "the airline does not allow to transport anything with lithium batteries"

Anyway, im not forcing you to get one just saying.. Its up to you..
Are you guys buying it from sony site? I got mine from amazon cause sony doesnt have a 1day delivery offer for me..
Amazon is "not that bad" no issues on the box or anything that will make me disappointed.. The only thing that i dont like is that they use a 1A7 type box which is kind of big for the tablets box and instead of bubble wrap its just some kind of paper like thing.. So if you shake the amazon box you can hear thr package inside.. But if we're talking about the tablets packaging, its fine

I don't have the charging issue with mine, or at the very least it isn't as pronounced. I did recently run into this issue with my Note 2 and it was because of the ROM and kernel combo I was running, it wasn't allowing the phone to charge as fast as it would on stock. That may have been the users problem, it may just be he has a crappy battery in his that needs to be replaced. I haven't noticed any big issues with mine, I have had it for a little over a month and a half, except for the screen pressure click that happens when you hold it awkwardly and it causes the screen to flex and your screen will click even though you didn't touch it because its reading the presses coming through from the back. That's because its so thin though.
