Hi everyone!! Quick question :) - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello dear fellow Transformer Prime owners!! I just purchased one today for my wife to surprise her because she is starting up school again and she wanted a tablet, so what better than the Transformer Prime lol
My question is, I literally just opened the box... and I would really like to get it school-ready for her when she comes back, because she's starting this summer and she has classes starting next week.
Now what I mean by "school-ready" is simple, I would like her to be able to read e-books (because I am getting e-book version of her books that she needs for class) so that she can read them and use them, I would also like her to be able to use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc... is that possible on this tablet?
Because she has a writing class and she would like to be able to type essays and stuff on their.
So please help me and let me know how I can do all that, and if you have any other recommendations for the tablet to get it "school-ready", please share!!!
Thank you soooooooooooo much in advance, all help will be greatly appreciated

XDA suitable for a 16 year old?

Hello there..
I have recently discovered your website and it is very impressive, well done
In september i am going back to 6th form to complete my a-levels, and i believe that the XDA would be a good application to have....
But i was wondering does any one have an opinion on a 16 year old using the XDA mainly for social reasons? Has anybody had an experince like mine? Is it really worth the money? Also can it be used as an mp3 player?
Thanks very much for your time and effort in advanced.
Jason
Yes, it's a fine MP3 player if you have a bigish SD-card for the music, and some better headphones than the junk that comes with it.
yeah im planning on getting the 256mb sd card....
but doesn't the ear phones supplied come with a speaker in it, to use it as a hands free kit?
thanks
jay
If you can wait a little, the XDA II will be available before december 2003 , and will be a lot better than the actual one :!:
XDA 2? is there something i should know about it?
is there a thread? what does it do?
thanks
jay
how much do u think the new XDA 2 will cost?
thanks again for ur help
jay
im 17 just finished 6th form and doing year 13 soon ive had an xda since i was 16 tis ok but if u use it for social and daily things expect it to get dents and scratches but other then that tis fine.
mp3 is good on it but movies are alot better lol
people call it a brick but when they see what it can do they love it lol.
other then that some peeps think ur werid holding this slab against your head till they figure out its actually a phone lol
imo get it
lol.....ok thanks
i really want to get it, but im not sure if i should wait until the XDA 2 comes out....
any suggestions?
thanks
jay
well i guess u either work or you are a rich student  so if you are in any of theose catagories id say yeah go for the xda 2 when its out. will be about £600 simfree though :S
(ill have to give it a miss as i need to save for my car insurance )
lol......im not that rich
i think i will just by the xda now, beacuse all that i have read about the XDA 2 the main difference i can find is that it has an intergrated camera.....and im not to bothered about that...
thanks
jay

I agree with the conclusion, but only because I have a hunch that the XDA2 is still a long ways off. But it has more than an integrated camera: Bluetooth and SDIO. You will really miss these, but then you can just sell it and get the XDA2 later.
it also have a 400Mhz cpu compared to xda1's 206Mhz
and it's cellphone is triband which you of cause dont need unless you travel to us or some other country which use 1900 Mhz
and it got optional Wireless LAN capability
and longer batt time
i'm just getting the xda1 myself since i cant wait for the xda2 which will most likely not come to where i live before Q1->Q2 04
and by then G3 (UMTS) pda phones will be just around the corner and then i could wait for those and end up waiting for ever
Social implications....
....put up with everyone calling it a "brick"... then repeat yourself 100s of times saying it isnt a phone, its a pda with a phone built into it. Then play some sample video, mp3 and start up the Rayman game, and watch them turn green with envy, and walk away saying "theyre glad they dont that brick"...
and show them jpg and avi files of sheep and goat p0rn which when you have a xda you always have with you for your viewing pleasure jk
yeah
i told my friend what i was getting, and now he is getiing an XDA now... lol
thanks to everyone who posted
jay
Hmm...
Advantages
I'd say it would be perfect if you go to college/uni, as you could fall asleep and record the audio from a lecture!
You could also play games with the atari VCS or Mame emulators, as well as its obvious mp3 capability.
Disadvantages
Buy a soft or hard case (see my posts in the Accessories forum)
Great device but dont dare drop it! Its not a plastic nokia!
Dont surf the web or use it for email though, GPRS is damned expensive. Spam can be very pricey!
Sorry for invading this thread seems just like what I was going to say later anyway
Well I Just been searching through for the word camera (wonder if there was a review of the one I just purchased)
Well Tommorow Afternoon Im going to buy a XDA Im not that worried on the new one, and I think its perfectly fine for 16-17 yr old Im 17, I loved it when I had a go of it in herefords o2 shop, the bloke there wasnt saying nowt about XDA 2 and the price drop even though he was trying to hint on things
One thing that made me buy it is it has Excel and Word as Im doing a college course based around Office Software, im going to have a freindly word with one of the college technicians and install the uploading software onto my profile, had a good look around the back of the college computers and they only got serial ports so put in a purchase for a serial cable 2 save me carrying around hundred of floopys to take home
You made some great suggestions for therory leasons, great idea as a dictaphone , and taking photos of the board wont have to write it down, look like a prick but hey who cares
mp3, and games on the way home well I be in heaven, any ideas what type of games are availble for free, and a site?
Thanks!!
try emule or kazaa best places for free appz
Well I am 50 years old and everybody that sees the xda young or old are amazed at its capabilities, I have satnav with tomtom 2 voice directions, a whole library of books, some good games, mp3s, codewallet for all my credit card details, wap access, the sky astronomy package which gives me planetary positions and interfaces to my telescope, click on a star/planet and the scope slews to it, and I also carry the odd short film on sd card. How can anybody fail to be impressed. Oh and its a phone too. And a dictionary, and a translator, talk into it in English and it talks in French/Spanish/German, providing the phrase is in its database.
Well on the way down to college on Tuesday few behind me was having a good laugh at this ring tone on this Nokia with a Poilce Siren then a some very desorted lyrics, never heard such good things from a phone, well except Wav files on XDA, its far ahead of that phone
I hope PDA Phones are pushed and marketed to hell, which is looking like they will be
Cant wait to get mine in my hands

[Q] Some noob questions about the Prime

Hi there,
I am currently looking for a device to replace my almost 4 years old netbook which is beginning to die on me right now.
One of the devices I am looking into is the Prime and I am hoping you could answer a couple of n00b questions for me.
What I am planning on doing with my future device could be seperated in 4 four points:
1) Mailing and websurfing. Of course this should work with the Prime.
2) Watching videos. Have seen enough reviews that proof how good this works on the Prime, too.
3) I am a student and therefore would really like to be able to read scripts (pdf format mostly) on my device and also being able to add handwritten comments to those pdfs and print them afterswards with the comments included.
I suppose there are a quite a few apps that would do that trick, right?
4) This is actually the one point that is holding me back from instantly ordering a Prime.
I´d like to have a device that lets me edit office documents. Of course there are enough of office apps out there but so far I havn´t found a single one that includes an equation editor for word documents.
Judging by some comments I have read and some screenshots I have seen on here I guess I am not the only one who majors in engineering or mathematics or anything else that includes a lot of formulas.
So, I was wondering how do you handle this compatibility issue?
And one last question that is only slightly related to the Prime itself: I guess most of you have the device configuration as I do. A smartphone, a laptop/tablet and a desktop pc.
How do you handle the "data scattering". YOu know, having a particular movie file on PC, another audio file on the phone and docs on the tablet etc.
How do you sync all this?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Ain´t it funny how n00bish one feels when changing to a new device.

[Q] Lapdock for Atrix 4g - what do you use it for?

I just got my lapdock and it's neat, no doubt about it. But what do you actually use it for?

I'm gonna wait for this one to get going before I input my wit!
VERY basic web browsing (email, facebook, xda, etc) and that's it. Don't try to fire up too many youtube videos or you'll get the low memory popup. I'm going to take my lapdock for a weekend wedding trip instead of my laptop in May...I should be ok. Looking forward to possible improvements in the future ICS build .

I got my new bicycle today........It's really shiny and cool. What's a bicycle do anyway?
Why did you buy something if you don't know what to do with it?
(Sorry, but it's either of two things..............you worded the OP in a way that doesn't convey what you really meant, or you really did just buy a lapdock without knowing what it's for)

My main curiosity is what most people use it for, as each person finds different value in different items....
I know what it is for and I'm enjoying using it in my own fashion. The main reason I bought it, so you will know, is because I found it for $50 bucks and it will increase the value of my Atrix 4g as a package, if & and when I go to sell it, should I ever find a phone I like more.
Also,Congrats on your new bicycle as well. I hope it serves you well. Just wait until you take the training wheels off! You'll be REALLY happy.
Thanks, I'm really happy with it! It has streamers on the handles!
I bought the lapdock in a deal also, but unfortunately mine is off to Motorola as there was something wrong with it when I received it. I think the lapdock will change somewhat in functionality once Webtop 3.0 becomes available to us. It should have more of a "laptop" functionality at that point I think.
I used it for very little until I installed webtop2sd, and turned it into a very serviceable portable connected computer. I have replaced my current laptop with the lapdock, and have been quite happy using Openoffice, and PDF reader. Professionally, I now have used it in court 3-4 times to hold reference materials (instead of printing volumes of online records), and I do email with it. I have also heard that it is very functional in a remote desktop setting, but aside from testing this, I have not pursued it.
The one issue that I have is installing firefox extensions. My lack of linux knowledge is holding me back, and I would like to be able to read .tif files from within the browser, but as of now cannot. Other than this, I think it is safe to consider this as functional as a regular (lower end) laptop.
Again, I cannot reiterate how much more useful webtop2sd makes this device. Who knows what the ICS update will bring?
Meh, id rather have an actual linux distro than android on a screen: Ubuntu is made for a mouse and keyboard, android, and specifically the apps for it, are made for touchscreens that our lapdocks do not have, so i dont see it translating well.

[Q] As a new Transformer Prime owner I have a few questions.......

First of all, apologies for what will inevitably be seen as the same questions that have been asked previously. I have searched the forum but due to the multiude of responses and threads I thought it be easier create this.
So I am completely new to the Tablet scene, never owned one before.
Picked one of these beauties up yesterday, and have played around with it for an hour before going to bed.
I have noticed one dead pixel on the edge of the screen which is only visible on a black background. I know there are pixel fix type apps, has anyone ever used these with success?
Then I also noticed the weird flickering of the screen in the bottom right hand corner which a number of people have reported.
In your opinion would you return the device for a new one?
Secondly, could anybody tell me how I can stream video files over a wifi network from one android device to another quickly and easily?
And thirdly, is there a consensus as to what the best case is for the prime? Ive checked the accessories page but there is so much and with so many different opinions. Im wondering if we have collectively agreed on the best yet as a forum? Are there any good cases that hold the dock and the tablet when connected?
And lastly, tell me some cool things I can do with this monster straight out of the box or at least with minimal tampering. I have already decided I will NOT be going down the root road as im not techy enough, and it will void my shiznit!
Thanks in advance!
Try this for the dead pixel, tough I don't think it will achieve anything. It's better to leave it working overnight. Make sure that your screen does not turn off if you don't touch it at regular intervals.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.htc.chris.blackspotdetect&hl=es
I have this case and I like it. I have had roocase before and they have really good customer service. I didn't want one that covered the face of the tablet.
For the dead pixel and the flickering, I'd return it for a replacement before I grew too attached. For the $$ that you spent, you deserve a *pristine* unit. Particularly if you bought yours from a retail store, take it back.
I'd agree in your approach in avoiding the rooting/unlocking. At least wait until you've come to understand and be troubled by the limitations born from it not being rooted. I've had mine for months and I still haven't seen a pressing need to hack it (unlike my Nook Color that has hacked while it still had that "new tablet smell").
On the question of cool things to do: Two pieces of software that are incredibly cool are the OverSkreen Browser and Stick It! media player. Both are floating-window apps that allow you to run in resizable windows that can float over other apps. Very cool stuff that you can show to iPad users.
Thanks for the responses all. My main query is now how to stream the media from my htc one x to my transformer. Any advice would be greatly received!

Might not be the solution you're looking for, but why not simply create a DropBox account, and put a linked folder on each device?
Now, you can simply drag the video file to the Dropbox folder, and it'll be sent to the other device.
Now you can watch the video on the second device, and not have to worry about cacheing, wifi delays, etc.
MX Player seems to be streaming Wifi videos pretty well for me. I'm new to it. Before that, I shared my media via Windows Media Sharing and it was picked up with UPNP, available in the store. My Net also does the same kind of thing as long as your media has been shared via Windows Media Sharing or another PnP protocol.

swipepad you do not need root., and Gesture control if you learn to root.
rooting is really not that hard.
