Hey guys,
I'm trying to restore my Galaxy S2 to the stock firmware. I'm currently on one of the CM9 nightlies and wish to return to the default O2 UK ICS firmware. I originally got this on by installing (flashing? I'm not too good with the Android terminology, sorry) clockworkmod recovery and from there installing an update.zip from the SD card.
In order to restore to the default software, I've downloaded Kies, Odin and what I believe to be the correct firmware, in the form of a tar.md5 file. This should be placed in the PDA option, correct? The boxes ticked are Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time, but the one I'm worried about is Re-Partition. Should this box be ticked? All the guides I've read are the same up to this point, but give conflicting guidance regarding repartioning. I don't know if being on CM9 will make this any different?
If this is successful, the phone will have all the default apps etc. and the yellow triangle on boot up will be gone?
Thanks in advance for your help, sorry I'm a noob at this - it's a reason I want to return to the stock firmware!
Bolt.
When you start odin, do not touch any of the left side settings. Repartition should not be ticked in your case. If successful, it will have default apps and yellow triangle will be gone. (PDA option is also correct)

Thanks, so regardless of which ROM I'm coming from, don't touch those boxes? When would repartition be used?
Thanks for the quick reply!

I've encountered a problem. I put my phone into download mode but Odin wouldn't recognise it. I unplugged it and restarted and now it's not vibrating at all? Any idea what to do?!
EDIT: AHAHAH forget that. I'm such a dumbass. It's just gone 12 which means my phone is in quiet mode and doesn't vibrate. Told you I was a noob.

Hey guys,
I just got my phone today and for some reason it doesnt work anymore.
I allready rooted it (one click) and loaded ROM manger. I tried to do that SD card thing on it whre you make room for App storage and when it rebooted it got stuck after the whole booting process. (The sound for the T-mobile ad seems to be a little to late) Black screen and lighted up sensor buttons (which stop glowing once I touch them, and then light up again). Tried everything. Odin sucessfully done, but still the same thing. Please dont tell me I got to give my brand new vibrant away. I get it in download mode and recovery mode.
Sorry for the bad english, I´m german and in america right now.
I deeply hope you guys can help me
Do you mean you tried to partition the SD card from ROM manager??
Check the repartition box with a checkmark..
Odin again, Odin again, and again, sometimes a success does not equal all files copied correctly.

Why did you even want to partition your sdcard when you already had how many gigabytes for apps already?

OKAY HERE GOES.
Download thisand extract it. And flash it in ODIN v1.7. No Pit file.
Your phone should boot into i9000 Froyo Rom.
Go back into download mode and Flash T959UVJFD.tar with the 512.pit that you downloaded in the previous threads.
To get into download mode use either "adb reboot download" or the button combo
Your phone should be saved. If not, then .....

However I didnt like it, so I flashed back to sgh-i777 firmware. However, when I turn the phone on it still says that its a gt-i900, but when I go into the phone settings it says that the model number is an sgh-i77...Any Ideas how to fix this?
Could it be that I accidently installed the i900 bootloader?
Yes I did read the stickys and I admit I had no Idea on what i was doing, but I believe learning comes from these trial errors like I just presented to you guys.
I boot the screen says i900, I gen no triangle. After everything is booted and i get to the phone- I go to phone info in settings and the phone model is an sgh-i777? is this normal??? cause in the boot menu it says its an international version.
you may have to use a usb jig to get it off. that is what works for me
How do you accidentally flash something on these phones?? The CWM that came with Entropys kernel makes accidents nearly impossible. Nearly.

Alright, I'm going to assume your phone boots atleast. You probably see a different boot screen with a yellow triangle and i9100 correct? If so, do not worry all is not lost. You have a microSD card right? Go over to the development forum here and find a ROM you like. I use the MIUI build (purely personal preference), UnNamed is another popular build that many members here use. Download the zip file from the thread and copy it to the microSD card (do NOT extract it, leave as a .zip file).
Put the SD card back into your phone and hold down the vol up, vol down and power keys untill CWM (a text based, bios like thing) comes up. From here use the arrow keys to navigate to wipe data, press the power button to select and confirm. Then go back to the main menu and navigate to "install zip from external SD". Find your .zip file and install.
That will get you a working phone. Search the forum for how to remove the yellow triangle if you want, it is a non-issue, just a leftover from Odin.
EDIT: After re-reading your post it sounds like you got it working again, the yellow triangle thing bootscreen is not an issue at all, removing it is a little advanced but can be done. If you're just getting your feet wet I wouldn't advise changing it untill you have flashed a few roms and found one you are going to stick with.
I think he is just confused by the triangle warning screen, and that the rom works fine. sounds to me like thats all it is, anyway.
edit: if you don't have the warning triangle and it says gt-i9100 on the boot screen, fire up odin and flash this.

Please anyone answer,
I downloaded I9100XWKJ2_I9100XEFKJ1_XEF.zip from sammobile, can you tell me how can I use it with Odin ?
Do I use this file for PDA, PHONE or CSC ?
Also what's the pit file ? When downloading Odin from sammobile, I have a s1_odin_20100512.pit, is it the right one ?
Thanks in advance !
this is en example use ur own file. (Proceed at your own risk. We are not liable if anything happens to your device by using this method. )
Step by Step Instructions:
Download the Android Firmware
Extract the downloaded file ‘I9100XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1.rar’ to get these 3 files:
CODE_I9100XXKL1_CL783870_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKL1.tar.md5
MODEM_I9100XXKL1_REV_02_CL1085162.tar.md5
Download Odin software
Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
Now, put the Galaxy S2 in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power.
this is required to install the XXKG1 using Odin PC Software.
Open Odin (from step 3) — Odin3 v1.85.exe.
Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !”
under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get this message,
than probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve drivers installed.
Important! On Odin, Do NOT tick the ‘Re-Partition’ checkbox, but keep the ‘Auto Reboot’ & ‘F.
Reset Time’ checkboxes ticked. Do not touch any other checkbox or tab or anything, except as required in step 9 below.
Select these files in Odin at respective tabs (check out the screenshot given at the top for help):
Click the PDA Tab, and select CODE_I9100XXKL1_CL783870_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5 (from step 2.1)
Click the Phone Tab, and select MODEM_I9100XXKL1_REV_02_CL1085162.tar.md5 (from step 2.3)
Click the CSC Tab, and select GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKL1.tar.md5 (from step 2.2)
Now, hit the START button to let the process begin.
When process at Odin finishes your phone will automatically reboot —
and you can unplug the cable then.
Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin.
If it’s red and with FAIL written over it, the process flashing process wasn’t successful.

Suppose not. Can't say you weren't helped, though. Read back, use a jig, maybe all hope is not lost.
I recently rooted my phone to the latest Siyah version. I noticed the capacitive buttons not working correctly and then I noticed the version I had was for I900. I went into cwm and installed the correct kernel for my phone but it did not fix the problem. I realized after that I didnt clear the cache. So I went into clockwork recovery and tried to fix that but I hit something to cause my phone to go to a black screen and had litle flashes every once in a while. I took out the battery and the galaxy screen with the triangle pops up but then goes to black. If I hit the power button it will show the battery charging button briefly but then goes away.
After all that. My question is can my phone be saved?
Thanks,
Mike

Yes, almost certainly.
First, please confirm the model of your phone. Do you have SGH-I777?
You will need to boot into download mode, and install the stock Gingerbread firmware UCKH7 that the phone originally came with. From that point, you can update or modify the phone as you prefer.
From what you say, it sounds like you need to do a fair amount of reading of the sticky post items such as the faq and guides and elswhere in this forum to get a good foundation of information about the phone and how it works. Understanding makes it much safer to work with your phone.

Yes. I have the I777. When I originally installed the kernel I downloaded it from the I777 section and it was supposed to be a 1 click thing till I realized those little issues of the I900.
I finally got into odin mode and it says its downloading. I can also now see it on my computer. Not sure what its downloading but its better than the black screen i was getting. Been on the downloading screen for 5 minutes or so. Just gonna leave it downloading till it does something or someone tells me something better to do

Go to the guide how to install custom binaries... which is linked in my signature. Read it untill you understand the basics. It will explain how to use Odin and download mode. Once you understand, flash the UCKH7 stock plus root package that is linked in the guide. This is assuming that you want root and to customize your phone.

if u follow the guide then u prolly have a rooted stock(assuming u used the rooted stock package) which Kies is not friendly with maybe due to having a non-stock kernel, also 2.3.4 is GINGERBEAD. Now if u plan to flash ICS ROM's i suggest forget bout Kies & go back to the guide & learn how to flash a kernel w/ CWM.
I have a backup of my stock rom from when I got the phone and I would like to restore that back but it won't let me. When in recovery and I hit restore I get "E:Can't mount /sdcard" so I try advanced restore and then I get "E:Can't mount sdcard" and finally I tried restore from internal sdcard and then I get an error saying "Couldn't open directory. No files found." bearing in mind I don't have any sd card inserted but it's how I always used to do it. So I tried going to mounts and storage then mounting the sd card from there but get an error saying "Error mounting /sdcard!".
What do I do please?

shouldnt be that hard to put one on, in fact if it becomes that hard, it should only be as hard as running a few ADB commands. look for one that you like and check out the instructions

No , hes talking about kernel. You need to try a different kernel (they include cwm recovery).
Flash the kernel/recovery you used when backing up the rom.

I can't even remember what kernel I was using back then. It was 2 years ago now.
I'm not sure if it's all worth it, I'm only recycling it at the O2 store for money, does it matter? Is installing custom roms illegal? Because my only worry is them testing it by turning it on or something and seeing that I'm running cMIUI.

Dude don't worry and that phone is worth the fix. As far as I c it you don't even have it that bad. What atheist said is correct.
All you need to do is look for a recovery / kernel that most of the time come together and flash it. Just read the instructions on that post.
After all you're in the right place to get your phone hooked up and fixed whenever u have problems. Don't be nervous about it. Unless u want a new phone lol.

Well I already have a new phone man, I'm just getting rid of this one at a store who will pay me money for it. But I wasn't sure whether to flash the stock back or not in case they checked.
best bet then is just put it back to stock and wipe it like new

That's what I would like to do but can't work out how really. Is there just a stock ROM I could flash instead of having to restore my last backup of one?

I have Odin, I have the stock tar md5 file or whatever it is. I think the only thing I'm missing is the OPS files which I can't find because the only link I found was dead. Any help please?
The tar.md5 file is all you need. Flash it in the PDA section of Odin as previously advised.

Right. I have to boot my phone into download mode too right? Power button + home button + volume down? Because I'm doing this and it's not working. Stuck on 'SetupConnection..' at the moment.
edit: it finished and said "Complete(Write) operation failed."
Anyone know why this isn't working? :s
can't get to Download Mode?
Time for usb jig.
or this thread.
Sorry, I typed that out wrong. I'm in download mode (I think) but I'm getting those errors that I posted about when I have it plugged in with Odin opened..
Install/Reinstall Kies and shut it all up before you open odin, then flash.

I totally forgot about kies man, never even had it installed. It seems to have worked, and I'm on a stock ROM now but when I boot up it's stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S II logo where it keeps illuminating..
I'm not sure if that matters, if the store I take it to for money does end up testing it, at least they can see it turns on, just boot loops for some reason? :/
