Open the zip file, if it contains few folders and a boot.img , then you should flash it from recovery not the bootloader.
And if it contains some files with img extensions then you should flash it through bootloader.

Hi guys. Finally i updated to ICS from the OTA and i reunlocked HBoot with HTC Dev. Now i'm Unlocked again which recovery shuld i Flash? And how to root now?
Same here
I had previously relocked my phone and reverted to stock cause I could not get a kernal that would not reboot my phone or cause it to heat up on a custom ics rom. I ran the new OTA and unlocked the phone via hTCdec site. I am now on 2.89 w/ hboot 1.58 s-on. I flashed the 4ext recovery successfully. I want to go s-off just cause lol. will flashing Vipers OTA give s-off or is there something else I should do?
Yes i know 4ext is the best but you can not install it because you need root and to get root you need a zip file and a recovery first. My question is which recovery and SU zip file.

All you need is the img file and flash it through fastboot from a computer. After that just flash a rooted Rom or whatever you want

Agreed. I am not currently rooted just unlocked. I flashed the recovery via fastboot. download a recovery .img and place it in the same folder where you have your unlock files for the htcdev site. in the command prompt direct it to the folder where u have fastboot and your recovery files. type,"fastboot flash recovery "yourrecovery.img" Do not use the quotations I used and replace yourrecovery with the file name of your recovery.

I know with unlocked and 4ext recovery I can do most things a rooted phone can do, but I want to be rooted just for the heck of it lol. If I flash vipers stock rooted ota deodexed zip will that give s-off. or could I just push a SU flashable img?

If you flash Vipers you will not get S-OFF. Just a rooted system

my free application, Flash Image GUI, will automatically extract the boot.img file and flash it. Then the next step is to reboot into the custom recovery and install the exact same rom.zip file.
essentially with htc's unlock method, the kernel portion of a ROM .zip can't be loaded from the standard recovery boot mode. my application, Flash Image GUI, loads the kernel portion of the ROM .zip from Android mode, easily allowing you to reboot into the custom recovery and apply the system portion of the ROM .zip.
if you're interesting in the more manual/command line route, which requires access to a desktop, the command you'll need is fastboot flash boot boot.img. in addition, the ROM .zip file should be the same as any other .zip file. if it doesn't open properly, might be a corrupt download. the boot.img is generally located in the root of the rom.zip file, or sometimes in a sub folder called kernel or boot. Flash Image GUI is very good at searching/locating the boot.img file in valid ROM .zip files.
hope the suggestions and some of those technical details help!

Try downloading the ROM again and use a program like 7zip to unzip the ROM. I'm pretty sure you can go into the ROM with esfile explorer from your phone. Then use flash image GUI and select the boot.IMG exactly.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Never mind....

Sounds like a bad download of the ROM .zip file. Downloading a 2nd time should resolve the issue. Many times you can check the md5sum of the downloaded file to ensure the download is correct.
If you still get the error from my app, after downloading the file again and ensure the md5sums match, link me to the exact file? I'd like to take a look.
Hope that helps!

thanks bro after downloading it a couple times it still wasnt working for me but after the 8/29/2012 update i downloaded it unzipped like a charm. =0 thanks for the amazing support!
So i was able to get the cm10 boot.img and flash it through the flash Gui app. once i did that flashed the cm10 rom in recovery. i triedd to boot into it and i keep getting sent back to the bootloader. I wiped cache davlik factory reset and wiped the system. was i not supposed to wipe the system? now i cant even restore to a sense rom is it because i flashed the cm10 boot.img? i am assuming i need to FASTBOOT a sense boot.img since i cant get into a sense rom.
So finally after flash gui not working for me i Fastbooted the Boot.img through adb and was able to flash cm10 zip again and it BOOTED! i tried this method after downloading the 8/31/2012 cm10 zip. I think i wiped system last time which messed up the whole thing!

Wiping the system and then trying to boot will definitely cause issues. Glad everything worked out!
For future reference, if you do experience any issues you think are related to how Flash Image GUI functions, feel free to post up in that thread. I do my best to respond as soon as possible!
I just wanted to be sure. I am S-OFF and have custom recovery installed, so can i flash the new firmware package through recovery or does it have to be done through fastboot?
Thanks

thanks. I appreciate it
Hi all! Just done unlocking bootloader, flash Amon Ra recovery and root. Now I want to flash custom rom but i am lost about flashing the boot.img in hboot, i really don't know how to flash it. I am at S-ON.. Any help would be appreciated. Tnx in advace!
you know what I don't know how to do it too. but there are some roms that will do it for you even if you are s-on
There's two possible ways you might have to do it.
1. If the ROM makes a PH98IMG file and puts it on your sd card then it will take you to hboot after it's done flashing and all you have to do is say "yes" to accept the "update". It will flash the kernel and then you can boot up the phone. After it's booted up make sure you delete that PH98IMG file so you can boot up again.
I think that if it's going to do this it will give you the option to select s-off or s-on when flashing the ROM.
2. If it doesn't do the above you will have to pull the kernel from the ROM. Just look in the ROM zip file in explorer on your pc and then copy the boot.img out of it into my fastboot folder. Then I just flash it from there using:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Some ROMs, like EclipticRez, give you the option of a few kernels. You can just pull the one you want and when you flash it change "boot.img" to whatever the name of that kernel is.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm now running custom rom. I even flashed to the latest firmware.
The file system is different than a RUU. Which files can I extract and use them as PH85IMG.zip to flash with?

Can I use it as the main installation? Meaning that if I have no Rom installed, can I still install it or is it only for updates?
