My 6 month old DROID RAZR just really impressed me - Motorola Droid RAZR

Short story is that I forgot I left my RAZR sitting on the roof of my car. After making my first turn, my phone slid from the roof of my car into the street. I realized it as soon as it happened and pulled my car over to the side of the road.
After running down the street trying to locate it, I spotted it laying face down on the far left/ middle lane divider. As I approached it I noticed traffic coming and backed off a bit hoping that no cars would switch lanes trying to avoid me.
My worst thoughts became reality when a red sedan ran my baby over. Both driver side tires made contact with the phone, making it pop up 3 feet into the air smacking back down onto the pavement.
I am happy to say that I am using the same phone to send this post. I screen is flawless and there are no marks on the phone what so ever. I had an invisible shield screen protector and a cheap plastic case on it. Motorola has made me a believer in their build quality, assuring them another of my purchases in the future.

I agree. But I also believe that some amount of effort is involved in luck. Motorola has crafted one sturdy little sucker. Me and my wife are still amazed that the phone is showing no ill effects. The only thing that happened was a one time reset after I picked it up off the pavement.

Good story Motorola marketing agent.

I wonder why razrs differ so much. Some get a cracked screen by just sitting on the table. One verizon store rep used to throw RAZR to the wall to prove its rigidness.
Inconsistency kills me. I wonder what type of RAZR I have.

usually, there's a lot of luck, depends where the glass is hit, each phone can have a different "slice" of glass, with different resistances.... depends on many factors

lets hope you never know

I dont think its totally related to razr building, of course its a nice piece of hardware, but even the stronger equipament under these circunstacies would be wrecked by now. Its not tottaly lucky either. Lets say 90% of it. lol
It didnt ever get a small scretch, its a really impressive storie!
You're a lucky guy!

Well, it's a Razr. It's obvious it will survive.
Just like in late 2008, when the original Razr V3 saved one man's life.
http://www.bgr.com/2008/11/21/motorola-razr-takes-fire-literally-saves-mans-life/
I love Motorola because of their quality. I know software updates are late and bad, but I realised making calls and having a great quality device is more important than ICS.

Meanwhile I dropped my first RAZR on the dance floor and someone stepped on it and it broke.

Your lucky. My 4 months old Razr Xt910 has been to service centre to fix audio issue. LOL.

How on Earth did you leave your phone on the hood of your car? Why was it there in the first place? Do you not have pockets? A purse? The inside of a car to put it in? Put it in a cupholder if you need somewhere to drop it.
I've never understood people that put things on top of their car. I'd never put something that could potentially scratch patch on top of a $30k-$150k+ investment. I also don't understand how people can eat in their cars though...so maybe I'm not the one to comment.

Not everyone is like you Mr.Perfect. I put my DROID charge and nexus s on top of the trunk lid of my second car and I was washing the first one. My brother decided to move my second car and get something from the garage. He was backing up and pressed the brakes hard. I heard like something fell on the ground and remembered that I had phones there. I wanted to get angry but it was no ones fault. I did not know that he would be moving the car and he did not know that I put the phones there. Luckily only couple dings and screens are in one piece.

I have two kids ages 5 and 3 that I needed to make sure were strapped into the booster seats. I set my phone on top of the car just to free my hands for a second. Yeah I admit that it was a scatter brain moment, but crap happens. I just got lucky this time, thought it made for an interesting story.

30-150k dollar investment how ****ing rich are you the car I'm driving right now I paid 3800 dollars for, last one I paid 2500 dollars for, hell the most I've spent on a car in 11 years was 7k dollars.
To the OP my sister has 4 girls ages 1.5-11 so I get the part about the scatter brain but if you know you got to deal with kids why wasn't your phone in your pocket to begin with?
Stuff happens I had an archos 5 take a couple falls (all where slip out of hand or snagged headphones pulled off of counter) the one that finally claimed the 5 was a face first dive into the gravel driveway, and 2 days after I got my samsung galaxy player 4.0 it slipped out of my hand and went face first on the tile floor at walmart (no damage)

Yeah your really lucky i was really mad the first time my razr fell. i missed my pocket about 3 foot from the sidewalk and just completely shattered the screen, my htc evo was on another level durability wise compared to my razr.

I had a commuter otterbox on, but that doesn't protect the screen.
And no I'm not obese.
Be careful!
So you were sitting on your phone while you were getting thrown around... It's a thin device, it will flex and bend to some degree. Gorilla glass was not meant for that kind of strength.

Gotta agree with you...Otterbox is meant to offer some extra protection from dropping and moisture not having 150+ lbs sitting on it and I'm not going to try to guess all the torque and g force and bouncing and slamming one goes through on a roller coaster.
When I rode the roller coasters at 6 Flags in San Antonio I always put my D2G in my front pocket and didn't get any kinds of cracked screens.

Sorry to hear about your phone, however, I'm not surprised at all. I'm a HUGE roller coaster enthusiast. Some coasters can pull upwards of 5 Gs. So you have to take into consideration that you had anywhere from 3 to 5 times your body weight slamming into your phone.
Not to mention that if any period of intense positive G force was preceded by any negative G force, (which is a certainty on any coaster with a drop) you may have been out of your seat for a second or two on the way down from the drop, causing even more force as you slam back into your seat as you reach the bottom of the drop.
All that said, I do use my phones all the time when I ride roller coasters because I love listening to music while I ride. Depending on the restraint type, I either keep my phone in my front pocket or I shove it in my pants right between my belt line and my crotch (LOL!). If it's an over the shoulder restraint then the front pocket will do, but for lap bar restraints the front pocket is a no go.
^Way too smart for me^

Thanks for the education and the suggestions milkshed- almost everyone else seemed to want to poke an eye out, but you have a little more patients.
I was trying to point out that doing activities, that differ from the norm,
may cause a challenge.
I still don't believe that Gorilla Glass lives up to what its supposed to do.
For those wondering about the integrity of the skin on my cheeks, no damage.

Aww, don't say that, I'm sure your level of intelligence is more than adequate .
I've been riding coasters for years. My curiosity/obsession started after watching National Lampoon's Vacation when I was a kid.
Folks get into coasters just as much as they do phones in these forums.

I hear ya. My girlfriend just had her Razr replaced after she dropped it while taking the Cleveland Browns to the Super Bowl.
According to her (I, thankfully was not around) the drop was not very high or hard, but the top half of the screen was shattered. I just takes the phone being dropped or pressured in the wrong way I guess. I never had a problem with my previous smart phones when they've been dropped. Maybe the Razr being so compact has something to do with it?
On the bright side, she received her replacement from Asurion a couple of days ago. We had asked the person we spoke to on the phone about having a brand new Razr shipped instead of a refurb. Thankfully when we opened the UPS box, inside was a brand spankin' new Droid Razr.
Hope your replacement phone turns out to be a new Razr as well!
I am really sorry for you...but just one thing, Gorilla Glass is scratch-proof, NOT ROLLERCOASTER proof...
If you sit on it whilst in a rollercoaster and expect it to be intact...you surely believe that Santa's for real too...
Nonetheless I like your warning...will make sure rollercoastering and Razr don't mix...
Man, I sure am glad I read this warning!
I was just finished duct-taping my RAZR to the bottom of my shoe, ready to go for a run and now I'm thinking... maybe I should change it so the screen isn't facing the ground
From Corning Gorilla Glass FAQ :
Can I break Gorilla Glass?
If subjected to enough abuse, Gorilla Glass can break. However, Gorilla Glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip, or break.

One word: DUH!!!! Doing anything out of the norm other than talking/texting/net surfing can and more than likely crack or break any cell phone. And I don't believe gorilla glass was designed to be under any arse on a roller coaster no matter how big or small you are.

It was a nasty rainy day when he picked it up. On the way back to work, he received a call (he had had the phone maybe 10 minutes).
He answered the call & layed the phone in his lap. When he pulled into work, he totally forgot the phone was in his lap & got out. The phone fell into a large puddle & he stepped on it smashing the screen all in one motion.

I also dropped it out of my lap when getting.out of my car. This must be very common. Mine has a small chip in on corner, about 2mm. Oh well, I refuse to use a case.
Rezound, rooted, loving it.
Don't your cars have cup-holders? I keep my phone there at all times.
What I have a bad habit of doing, is at night when I'm chillin on the couch I'll have my phone sitting on my lap on top of the blanket that is covering me. Then when get up to go to bed I'll forget about it and yank the blanket off. Usually the phone just falls on to the carpet, no big deal. On my old Incredible, I did this and it flew up in the air and flipped a bunch of times and landed flat on it's back on my padded ottoman/coffee table. My CM7 lockscreen came on when it landed. My wife looked at me and said "That was pretty good, now do it again". Lol
first day i had my rezound, i dropped it off the counter at my store..so like a 4 foot drop lol..landed on hardwood floor..but was fine. i was so mad at myself i just screamed the F bomb as it fell hahaha

This exact same story happened to me before too! You just need to replace the word "phone" with "pipe", and then replace "received a call" with "smoked bowl". =P
LOL
this thread has inspired me to get a case. my inc2 was cheap enough to just buy another in the off chance that something terrible happened, but not this puppy. besides, it's already massive. what's another couple millimeters on each side, right?

I strongly recommend the OtterBox case for whatever phone you have. I have one for this, my fascinate, the droid 2 i gave my mother-in-law. Besides the extended battery for long trips and when I wanna use the **** outta my phone, the defender was the best thing I got for it. Two days after I got the case I dropped my phone on concrete and kicked it while at work and watched it bounce across the room, woulda been dead without the case.
If it falls out of my truck, it's easily a 4' drop. I'm careful with my phones, never had a major drop with my Incredible, but Otterbox Commuter arriving tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

I dropped my phone on the concrete sidewalk. While walking/listening to some music my hand caught the headphone wire and pulled my phone out of my jacket side pocket dropping it onto the ground Luckily I had an Incipio case and it fell on a corner. The case corner cracked and saved my phone

Story of indestructibleness

So I was at the We Were Promised Jetpacks show in Boston this week. It was in a small cub, no seats just open standing room. Well the show was AWESOME and as they say in the UK It gets pretty “lively”. So I was right up by the stage and was jumping up and down and my Razr Maxx flew out of my hoddie pocket and went sliding across the floor, it ended up like 12 feet behind me on the floor. I think it might have gotten kicked too. So the girls behind me were able to get it for me.
Not a single scratch!! I cannot even tell which part hit the floor; there is not a single mark of any kind!! Pretty darned impressive if you ask me!
Cheers.
Really, I Have heard a lot of posts complaining about how fragile is the Razr, I'm a basketball coach and I choose this phone because of its toughness, your comment makes me feel happy.

I went snowboarding one time and i was jamming to music, I finished my bindings and when I got going I forgot to zip the pocket my phone was in. It flew out and slid 10 ft through the snow and was completely buried. I picked it up, it was still playing and just kept going. No problems.

No I use no case of any kind. I have never used a case on any of my phones. I can't stand them.
I don't use any case on any of my phones. And I am a really bad user.
I dropped my razr numerous times, including from a moving car. I got some minor scratches on the edges and on the cheap acrylic camera cover, but the display is 100% clean.
My iPhone 4 screen broke entirely because it fell 2 feet.
And I had a SGS2 screen to die (stay off at all times, not phisically breaking) because it fell 2 feet also.
The old razr are the most resistant devices on the planet. I never seen one break.
If there is one thing that moto is good at is the mechanical design of their products.
mines in for repair at the moment. bent down to pick something up and it twisted in my pocket shattering the touch screen.
im not complaining, i've dropped it, sat on it and even thrown it and it's been great. it dosen't like been twisted, guess most phone don't.
im stuck with a crappy iphone till they fix it. i love my razr.

Sounds good. I've had a few drops, no case and no problems yet. I dislike cases as well. It has to do with how it lands tho, as has been noted many times from those users who had very short drops and ended up with shattered screens.
I commute via Ducati and have a lot of trouble obeying speed limits. I'm working on that.
I hit a pot hole while avoiding a chicken-brained driver cutting a curve into my lane. My phone popped out of its Ram Mount and slid (about 50MPH) under the oncoming car, across the road, and into a rock-lined ditch. With an inch of water in it.
(It never dawned on me until later that the music it was feeding to my helmet via bluetooth never stopped playing)
I turned around (still cussing), searched a bit, grabbed the phone, and wiped it off on my jeans. The $7 genuine plastic sleeve has a 2mm rubbed spot at the corner. That's all.
Yep, that's pure luck, but the GNex I traded for this Razr Maxx would have sprayed parts over a quarter mile.

I'm on my 2nd RAZR (CDMA). I ended up upgrading to a MAXX Limited Edition I found on eBay.
In my 5 months with this phone it has been dropped over 20+ times. 3 of which were directly on concrete parking surfaces. I've slammed it in my car door really hard 2 times not to mention the myriads of spills and splashes. It still runs like the day I bought it. Aside from a little knick here and there on the actual phone case it's still in like new condition.
Also, I do NOT use a screen protector. Personal preference.

zero scratch on screen. corners of the plastic bezel (wherever its angled) however, start to show some gradation... its like a bit smudge. oh, and the Motorola metal strip on front top? some scratches there.
other than that, screen and back is rock solid.
I dropped mine once on carpet from chair height. No scratches. No protection but overly careful.
SHVR MAXX
Mine has some light scratches on the screen. They are only visible when it's off and I hold it at the right angle, but I thought it should be more scratch resistant. I'm pretty careful with the screen.
The back plastic has some scuffs where it rests on my desk, but nothing else.

Has anyone dropped their phone yet?

Just curious, when I was researching which phone to buy I read some posts from other carrier forums that screens tend to break very easily from short distances or even in a pocket. Havent seen posts for VZ yet. Im very careful with this probably too careful

Haven't broken the screen but the frame of this phone is crap coming from Motorola. It's hit the ground twice from less than 3 feet and has 3 rather large dents in the housing. Once was falling off the seat in my car to a rubber all season floor mat which shouldn't do crap but left a dent. I'll give samsung the nod on internal hardware but the chassis is awful. A friend of mine dropped his from about waist high onto the edge and shattered his screen.

I have a pretty extensive history with Motorola and have come to the same conclusion. I had my phone on my bed and accidentally dropped my belt on the top right corner of the phone and it left a noticeable indention. I immediately went out and bought a case for the phone even though I've never worried about one with any previous phone.

if you afraid the screen would be broken, you should buy Nokia mobilephone. otherwise, you could buy a phone case to protect your mobilephone.

I have blackberry torch. i never dropped my handset.
My phone feel maybe a foot, if that onto concrete and the screen cracked from the corner. The screen still works, the touch buttons still work. Just a crack. Luckily GeekSquad covers accidentals. I ended up getting a SlimArmor case form SpiGen. Did some small drop tests on my sidewalk. Seems to protect it pretty well.
yeah the frame does suck. mine creaks lol its not fully pushed against the body. silly Samsung

You people are rough on phones. I've never dropped a single phone in my life, it's always first on my mind when I move around.

Not really, I'm just a careful person, takes no extra effort at all. Nothing not worth preserving a $600 phone, anyway.
i got mine last Wednesday. love it...been super careful with it and was going to get a case yesterday on lunch...when i got to work i grabbed the phone from my console and went to get out of my truck and the phone bumped the steering wheel causing it to fly out of my hand and onto the pavement i pick it up and the outer glass is complete spider webbed and cracked all down it....sucks ....since i just got it Verizon hadn't activated my insurance or some BS so now im fighting with them to get it replaced...the insurance co don't want to do it...sigh...all else fells i found these outside case with the glass(no lcd) for 12 bucks on ebay.....:crying:

wow that looks like a good case
I carry my new phones around like they're a newborn child, won't put it in a pocket that has anything else in it or near the desk/nightstand edges. It's all about minimizing risks - like not trying to carry too many things at once.
With that being said, there's a 100% chance I'll drop this phone at some point. My GS3 survived a couple major drops with a few small dents in the corner .... as much as I like the look/feel of the GS4 a million times more than the GS3, I feel like the reduced bezel size and straight/rigid edges won't be as durable.
Get a case guys!

Not at all. Been 2 years since I've dropped one. It's a little weird but I get kind of attached to technology and take care of it. I'm the kind of person that doesn't want a single scratch on my phone and I hate cases so I just don't drop anything and nothing belongs in my right pocket but my phone

I just got a Spigen Neo Hybrid case. It's slim and sexy, but now I'm concerned it won't offer much protection for anything but the shortest falls. I'll have to check out this one.
I got mine on release day, and haven't dropped it once. I carried it for a few days with no case to enjoy the slim profile of the phone. Bought an Incipio case for it and seems to do the job. Of course like I said... haven't dropped it. I plan on picking up that Neo Hybrid as well, its gorgeous! :good::highfive:
