Fried Lens - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So I was an idiot and tried to capture a few quick pics of the Sun tonight at the beginning of the solar eclipse. I knew pointing the Note's camera directly into the sun was risky, but thought I'd see if it would work, and only took 4 super-quick photos.
Unfortunately, it was enough to fry the lens, and now whenever I use the camera on any type of light, solid-colored background, the center of the image has a light brown-ish hue. Taking pictures of normal day-to-day things, I'm sure I probably won't notice, but still...I'm anal about these types of things and knowing it's there is going to drive me crazy.
So, all of the "ZOMG - WTF were you thinking n00b!?" comments aside, what options are there? Are there repair shops out there that can replace these lenses? I'm assuming a replaced lens would fix it. Is this part something I can order and replace myself?
I bought it at Best Buy, and I'm beyond my 30 day warranty, so even if I wanted to be a weasel and try that route, I couldn't. Can Best Buy, or even ATT fix these? (I highly doubt it, but thought I'd ask).

As for burning out...just as with looking directly into the sun with your eye can cause damage to the retina, same holds true with a CCD or CMOS camera lens.
Without proper filtering, you can destroy the light sensing elements.

Every Note I've had and used has the same issue, without pointing it at the sun. But honestly mine was in the grass basically pointed directly at the sun for hours yesterday, and there's nothing wrong with it (other than the existing colored spot like yours has).
Are you absolutely sure this problem is new? Are you sure you're not just being over-sensitive all of a sudden and noticing it for the first time and attributing it to the sun because you did something out of the ordinary?

You still have a year warranty on the phone...call up ATT and have them send you out a new phone. Consider this a lesson learned.

Thanks for the response guys, and for the links. That gives me something to think about. I'm hesitant to replace the phone, since I replaced it once already to try to resolve the Black Crush problem (which did fix 90% of it). I'd hate to get a replacement that has that bad problem again. I'd rather live with a bad camera, if you know what I mean.
And definitely lesson learned.
Johnus - I've used my camera quite a bit and not once noticed that problem. I can't say for 100% certain that it didn't exist before, but being anal with these types of things like I am, I'd have to say I'm at least 99% sure it wasn't there previously. I'll leave that 1% open because I'm a man, and according to women, men are always wrong.

[Q] Display defect or...not?

Hi guys,
New thing, i notice this on both i9100 phones (the one i sended back and the new one from today). There are like to almost same dimension parallel stains/distortions(?) on the bottom half of the screen and you can notice them only if is dark/semi-dark in the room and your phone is in front of a monitor/hdtv with a withe screen, in other conditions they can't be notice and from what i can tell they don't alter the image in any way. I will post a image from the first phone (the second one is almost the same) if you guys notice them or not, or you have a theory, please post.

Looks to me like a small manufacturing mark or defect in the polarising filter on the screen. I wouldn't be concerned with this, i doubt you'll ever get an LCD that doesn't have something like this.
the reason it is only showing up in front of a TV or screen is because the light coming off it is polarised. normally this shouldn't be visible, so the manufacturers aren't concerned

No, i'm not concerned. I think is probably from the machine that holds the glass during production or assembly (because there are two i9100 with the same shape of the stains). I just wandered if other owners of i9100 notice the same thing with their phones, but from what i see nobody bothers...oh well, thanks anyway.
Well my phone doesn't have that. And phones I've had before haven't had that. If it doesn't bother you then that's fine...personally I'd be and would get a replacement.

Ok sir, i will play this game, lets talk facts:
- This is my second phone after returning the first phone with the same problem and some package issue.
- The two phones come from the same online retailer but diffident distributors, this means is bigger than a batch problem.
- The problem is almost identical (two stains same shape), but visible only in one condition (mentioned above) and only from a very wide angle (btw if you tilt the phone in that light and angle the stains change color from darker to lighter).
- It doesn't affect in any way, shape or form the generated image, it can only be seen with the lcd off and in a fluorescent light.
- If you return for the second time the device, you have to wait for betwin 2-10 days (again) for the service department to come with a resolve and you risk to get a money back resolve, witch mean from 4-14 days to transfer your money in your bank account and after you start from the beginning with another retailer (all retailers have the same distributors).
With all above taken into account, honestly, what would you do?

I think you're very unlucky to get a replacement with the same problem. Like I said, mine has an absolutely perfect screen, and given the fact this is an expensive flagship handset, everybody should have a perfect screen. Even on cheap phones I've never seen the poor screen QC that I've seen on the GS2, it's a shame. But NEVER accept anything less than flawless. Imagine the blob gets bigger and distorts the image somehow? You will be angry!
Personally, it would be hassle waiting for a replacement or a refund etc, but I'd much rather have my money back or a flawless phone, than hold on to a clearly flawed one. It's bothered you enough to post up on XDA about it. Seriously man, just return it. Maybe get a cheap phone and wait til the Nexus Prime comes out...

Well, third device, second retailer, same defect. I'm done, i didn't try the withe version but then again i don't like withe, so i will keep this one.

HTC Amaze Camera faint dark bands, ICS?

I've noticed ever since I've upgraded to ICS (could be completely irrelevant of the upgrade.. but I never noticed it before today) that using the Camera on my HTC Amaze has these really faint dark bands.. they are only really noticeable on a solid-color surface in low lighting..
It's very obvious when taking the pictures (on the screen/viewfinder, because I can see them remain static as I move the camera around)
I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or if it's a sudden defect in my phone's CCD.. I pay for insurance but the lines/bands are so faint and barely noticeable that it's hard to justify $130 to fix this... It just seems so weird because I take such good care of my Amaze.
I've tried restarting the phone, I've tried different camera apps, I've tried adjusting settings manually (resolution, ISO, etc) they appear in all. They also appear in videos. I've tried cleaning the sensor both with the case on and off, no change.
Here are some examples of said "bands". I have no 'control' pictures to show but these are all pictures of a solid color surface.. they are very faint but definitely noticeable once you've noticed them.. it's really annoying and I can't figure out what the problem could be.
I've done extensive searching.. tried multiple keywords "bands" "faint black lines
really can't find any information about this problem, only thing I've found is a couple of threads on other forums for digital cameras.. but nothing that could help me solve this.
I know they are really really faint, but it's very noticeable on the screen when taking pictures of anything solid now, and in low lighting.
So, anyone have any idea? I could shoot for a replacement, but I'm just not sure if I'm willing to spend $130 when most pictures turn out just fine.
I'd also like to add that I rooted the phone and it's unlocked so I'm weary of going for the warrenty replacement (the phone is only a couple of months old). I'm afraid if I do a warrenty replacement with T-Mobile that HTC will come back with it being unlocked and not under warranty, and I'll have a $450 charge from T-Mobile waiting for me... if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing (utilizing warranty through T-Mobile's program with a rooted/unlocked phone) please let me know. I understand that T-Mobile will send you a replacement, while returning the phone to HTC.. but that's about it.
don't like to reply to my own posts but I take it nobody else has/is experiencing this issue? I keep thinking it's 'normal' for low light/solid color situations, but I'd really like to know if others experience the same thing.. if i'm being too picky?
If it's a faulty sensor i'd really like to start the process of getting a replacement, just curious, anyone?
I don't know if this helps, but I don't have that issue with my camera. Using stock app + modified .xml (eliminates compression adding quality)

Looks like something is up with the sensor then Really sucks.. still torn between going for the replacement ($130 deductible) or just keeping it.. you can't see it on ANY pictures, really.. only noticeable when looking at solid color surfaces in low lighting.. ugh

Going to try and throw Android Revolution or EnergyROM and see if that changes anything.. but I doubt it ;/
I think the question you have to ask yourself is "How often will I take pictures where there's a predominant solid color?"
If that would be, I'd say rarely. Then I would keep the phone.

[Q] 2nd device also faulty, camera app. not working. What do?

First I receive a device with brightness issues as stated here. After getting a new device and realizing the old device infact did have a brightness issue I was happy ...until I discovered the camera app. doesnt work!
It doesnt matter if I click on the physical button or the app. icon, it just slides back to the same screen. I tried downloading "Magic Camera", and when I open it, it says "Camera is not available on this device". Are there ANY solutions? I did try to restart phone, reset camera and factory reset, but nothing works.
If its not a hardware issue, the only issue I can guess of is an update. The old device (the one with brightness issues) had a bunch of updates when I first entered the store (+15), many of them were standard apps. (calender etc.), and maybe one of them was Camera, but I dont remember. Unfortunately when I enter the store now on the old device (after a factory reset, as im first shipping it back in a few days) it doesnt show that there are any updates, so maybe its running on an old camera version which works, or a new one and my new device just doesnt show the update for it.
Im really looking not to get another replacement as I already spent alot of $$$ on protection (zaggs on one and martin fields on the other....), and I just cant afford to buy them again, so any advice is appreciated.
Hardware fault, probably the cable isn't connected to the camera module etc.
Things get damaged in transit often, couriers throw stuff around like junk sometimes.

Yea, thats what I figured if it wasnt a software issue. Read some people opened their phones themselves and reconnected the cable, however those were older Lumia models where you could remove the cover, since 920 is shut I cant. Time for a 3rd device and a 3rd set of protection film. Oh, and a 3rd prayer that it wont be faulty.
3rd phone replacement also faulty with brightness. Now waiting for 4th replacement. Im beginning to believe many 920 owners have the brightness issue but just dont realize it, cause they dont have a 2nd device to compare with and just assume its how its supposed to look. Gonna get 4th and incase I need, a 5th replacement. If they're still faulty I will simply wait for other WP8 devices.

I have more than 35 Nokia Lumia 920 handset around me in the office, none of them had this issue.... the brightness. Let alone the Camera.
Where are you ordering your phone from if you don't mind telling ? and how much are you paying for it ?

Yes, you're right. Its all a hoax, because I love replacing phones 2 times a week, you got me. (HURR )
Its a phone dealer called Call Me, im not paying anything for the replacements as I demanded not to pay for shipping. I dont really care if you dont believe me, I had several people look at the phones side-by-side, and everyone has agreed that one is only what seems half as bright as the other (full brightness). The screen is completely "dark tinted". But if you dont have two to compare with (one faulty, one non-faulty), you will never even know the difference.
And you have your facts wrong my man, 2 had brightness issue, where as with one the camera doesnt work. I havent gotten 4 with brightness issue...
Im not blind, its easy to tell its faulty, and if only you could see it too you'd know not to post with such an ignorant attitude.

You say that if you don't have a flawless device next to you it's hard to tell the difference yet you contradicte yourself by saying it's easy to tell it's faulty.
Let me tell you that the camera issue is indeed defection. However, what you don't realize is that not all phones with identical model number have the same hardware inside. It all depends on the batch release.
I have been following this forum in the last 10 years and from my observation this is a common issue found everywhere. It was very common with the HTC HD2 and so.
When smartphone manufacture request Display,RAMs etc... and the vendor cannot deliver the quantity needed for production, the phone manufacture tend to consider another supplier.
THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU PHONE IS FAULTY AND IT SHOULD BE RETURNED.
I hope you understand that. Finding the perfect device is never gonna be easy. Some people complained about vibration rattle and had perfect display, some other complained about the yellow-green tinted softkey buttons with no vibration rattle and so on....
Keep returning your device and you will see no difference as long as the device delivered is from the same batch.
Also according to the thread you posted, it looks like the yellowish ( if that's what they said although they only noticed it when they compared it to another device ) display phone tend to have better buttons and no vibration rattle etc...
Even on my iMac 27" there is a 692 page thread related to the IPS screen on the apple forum posted by people complaining about the difference of colors between two identical 3000$ machines one with an LG display and the other with a Samsung one.
Keep posting your updates, I'd like to see where this thing is leading you to.
Small advice, if your next replacement is still "faulty" return the handset and go to a shopping center where you can try the device before buying it.
And to be fair, I've never had to return something 5 times. Twice is enough to tell that it's hopeless

Its easy to tell its faulty when they're side-by-side, is what im saying. Like I already mentioned earlier, the only reason I ever got the 1st replacement was because of the very yellow tinted buttons, and it then turned out the whole screen was affected (or a different batch release, if you want). If I hadnt read about it, how some people said they had pure white buttons, I probably wouldve just assumed its how it was meant to be and just kept it.
Even if its because of different hardware, or if its because they're faulty devices, im paying so much money for this phone that I dont see why I should be happy with a phone that only has around half the brightness. I dont mind getting phones replaced until I hit the right batch/non-faulty device, but I think the phone dealer does. They dont have physical stores so I cant go in and check first.
I already told them if its a problem, they can just let me know, and ill finder a different dealer.

The yellow-green tinted softkeys are not related to the display panel. Both are independant. My screen's as white as my older Xperia S at full brightness and even more than my L900. It's perfectly fine and I do work for the company. I could have exchanged it if it was. As said, I've seen dozens of Lumia 920 devices and all of them have yellow tinted softkeys.
Yellow tinted buttons are mainly due to the coating on the keys. It is not related to the display, if it was, brightness level would have changed the lightning level of the keys. Note that although keys may look yellowish-green, the white on the display itself is pure white.
All new batches coming have the yellow-green-blue tinted keys. It's mainly because at night, white bright keys could disturb and annoy you.
PS: I also like my device to be in perfect shape and worry about small details, but you are overdoing it.
Take my words for granted. The yellow softkey IS NOT a defect.

I dont mind the yellow tinted buttons, its more relaxing for your eyes at night. However, both phones that had issues with brightness, also had the yellow tinted buttons, whereas the device where the brightness was better, the buttons were white. If its not because its faulty then so be it.
I do worry about small details (such as dust under screen and scratches upon arrival), however I do not mind the yellow tinted buttons. I do however mind the big difference there is in the brightness, and that is why im getting replacements. Its as if Nokia decided to go with a low-end panel when they ran out of the good ones.

There should be no dust under the screen nor scratches upon arrival. Never.
Make sure the seller is not sending you refurbished units. If you can return it back and order from a trusted online seller like amazon or ebay whatsoever outside your country then that would be a better option.

And there hasnt been either, only the brightness and camera. The thing is im buying the phone, and paying it over a 2 year contract. I dont have the money right now to pay the entire thing. If I did I would get the grey model, but im getting a white (they dont have grey at Call Me). I can pay the whole thing later this year, as I dont wanna pay it for 2 years, but for now thats all I can (im a college attendant)
Received 4th phone today and decided it would be my last, if it also were to have a faulty screen/"from-the-bad-batch". The screen however, thankfully, is bright and good. Again its easy to tell with them side-by-side, its like night and day. The buttons on the device is however with the yellow tint. As mentioned earlier, I do not mind this, espcially in low-light situations. It is however - in my opinion - ugly, simply ugly.
The phone I had where the camera didnt work had white buttons, it matched the device, but oh well, im not gonna ask for yet another replacement and risk another faulty/bad-batch screen.
Another user on XDA could in this thread also confirm the colors on his device was not right. I really think this issue should have a sticky thread explaining it, if only people could see the difference, they would want a new device.
Unfortunately now that my new device with the good screen also has yellow tinted buttons, it can no longer be used as an official way of telling whether or not a device is faulty, so as of now only comparing with other phones will be able to tell.

Burnt Screen Repair or Custom ROM?

Hello, here is my problem:
I bought the phone used (refurbished) from a second hand store. The phone's exterior is is great condition. There is only one problem: The OLED display is terribly burned! Black screen are washed out with heat marks (inverse burns), and coloured screens are burnt.
The phone probably used to be a display phone for an store somewhere. The blue leds are the worst (yes I know what I am talking about), and the green and red ones are okay. I try not to display any images or colors that have more that 30% blue.
I've been ripped off too. The store has a BS no refund policy that they told me after I bought the phone. I can't do an exchange (partially my fault too, because I was afraid they would give me a worse phone!). I had no idea it was burned until I went home and turned it on. I was planning on returning it, but then did some research about the business.. I will never shop there again
I don't want to the phone replaced unless it is a newer model, or better condition than this one (that I have). And I don't want to go to a third party service, unless they actually know what they are doing. The process of removing the screen is time consuming, and very risky. I don't trust anyone but Samsung at the moment.
So.. I have two options:
a) Don't get the phone repaired, and maybe flash a better Rom on it. This will probably ruin my chances of ever getting my phone fixed by Samsung if I am not careful. Short term satisfaction, until the screen dies out (I hate OLED displays for that reason).
Or
b) Pay Samsung to fix or replace my phone. I have contacted them a month ago, and they said that I could get a repair as long as my phone was not rooted. I have no idea how much it should cost (if you know, please tell me!), or, if it is really worth it. Long term satisfaction, a working screen.
And Im not talking little ghosting burns either. My screen is always a greenish yellow tinge. And I cant look at anything without seeing a burned in screen.

This will help everyone who has the "burn in issue". This is a awesome phone (not the best, but still great). I think it is worth keeping.
I tried that link you posted. They say that they are selling a OEM LED screen. I find that funny, since that probably isn't real. Probably just a mistake on their part, great price though (considering the type of screen).

I think you're looking at the wrong thing. It's the LCD/Digitizer and it costs $160 (the whole service).

Sorry, I meant the screen they are supposed to be replacing. They say the replacement is a oem lcd screen, which dosent exist for the i777.

If you are going to replace the screen yourself...and I just did it..not hard at all. Etradesupply.com has the lcd digitizer with front housing for under 120 dollars. It includes capacitive button ribbon as well. Yes this company is in China...but it was recommended by a friend of mine and I am very happy with the product. I replaced my screen very easily. If you go that route it is worth it.

I am happy that you found a replacement screen for your device.
But, how long is it going to last? I am surprised that companies are spending money to make OLED (not LCD) displays for phones that are outdated. This phone is maybe two years old now, and if the screen is this burnt out: Is it really worth it? Do I have to keep replacing my screen every 2 years, or, is Samsung going to admit that their samoled, and other OLED technologies are "not ready for long term use because they die too quickly"?
Of course not, they just want your money!
A OLED works almost the opposite way as a LCD does. A LCD must send MORE power to a pixel that is displaying a dark pixel, while a LED display uses less energy to power a dark pixel. Almost like those old CUT monitors, it uses the additive theory of light, versus the LCD subtracting theory of light.
But they still use three color pigments: Red, Green, and Blue.
Someone who claims they are selling a i777 LCD digitizer with bottom button row is a nut ball, or, are false advertising what they are selling. I seem to be finding this problem with every third-party part company that sells parts for the OLED display.
I wish it had a LCD: It would last so much longer. Less heat, less problems, less stress, cheaper parts, and more confidence.
My verdict:
I don't trust myself enough to replace the parts myself. I ruined my iphone 3gs that way, and don't want to ruin this phone. If the phone was cheaper (I was also ripped off for the phone), then I would be slightly less reluctant to do it myself.

Just in this statement you're comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison,They are not manufactured they same. This device is much much easier to disassemble and reassemble then any I-device. And anyone that has this device, knows that the screen longevity is about two years and that the blues are what burns out the quickest, unfortunately its part of the business world, mass production and cutting overhead.
In my opinion, from just reading your posts you're trying to get a quality device at a minimal cost and now you're going to nickle and dime yourself to death. On top of that, getting aggravated every time you look at your device. Save yourself time, money and aggravation and get a new device...besides.... this one, even though its still a great device and still being supported by great devs is a dinosaur and will in the near future be shelved.

Just my own opinion, but I think they're well aware that their oled displays don't last long. Odds are their thinking is that if your average display lasts between 2-3 years it'll help push you towards another new device. Just something to consider.
I have been looking at the Nexus 4. This phone (I777), is the perfect size phone for me. Not huge, but not small either. I just really hate the OLED. If it were ten years into the future (assuming that the led technology has a longer life span), then I would not be having this problem.
The nexus 4 is slightly bigger than the S2.. I like to buy older phones, because they come at reduced cost. Maybe I will wait for the next nexus to come out, then buy the old or new one.

Mine unit from Poland also have this... More over i found one redditor that have bended unit.. I put mine on leveled (screen side) surface and also is bended... So meny $ a issues...

I am not going to defend Samsung etc, however if your unit is broken, got defects, or you are not happy with something - just send it back, ask for replacement or just return it then buy new one.
It's not just his... looks like a lamination issue.
Not something you should see on a flagship display.

First: If you were read article you will knew that Samsung said it is manufacturing side effect so maybe it is not so obvious to return the unit. The defect is in the same place on all reported phones... Could be hard to get one without it as guy in twitter try 2 times and both have the same issue.
Second: If you were look inside the twitter comments you will see that it is not only uk but also in usa and other regions that are affected.
Third: 23u is my primary phone, so not so easy to just return it and stay without the phone as i also use esim. And more over i can get another unit with the same defect or even they will not accept it as they mention as it is side effect of manufacturing.
Right now it is not disturbing the use of the phone, but as i know it is there it is quite not comfy...
It's really irritating that people look for this nonsense that doesn't affect the functioning of the phone one iota and then share it around and ruin everyone else's enjoyment of their devices.
I can confirm that my US Ultra has this. Never would have seen it if it wasn't pointed out.

First - I read it, if you are not happy with the product, don't use it, simple. You still have 14 days to send it back if you are not happy, vote with your wallet.
Second - And? Not sure how big % of phones got that issue, but same as above applies, if people are not happy they should send units back. Maybe then samsung would acknowledge issue.
Third - No one force you to stay without phone, if you sold etc. your previous one or sent it back for trade in, then make a complain to Samsung.
And fourth, if you read my post with understanding you would get that I do not defend them. Sending back bad/wrong/broken etc product is our right, Samsung and S23 is not the only phone on the market, if you have issues with them, than feel free to buy something else.
I was angry with oneplus few years ago and guess what, I am on samsung now.

This is nothing but people hunting for reasons to dislike the phone. It has zero effect on functionality and you have to really be looking to even see it. It's a nothingburger discovery some iPhone fanboy found and put on Twitter to cause drama.

The problem is it's not supposed to be there at all. Not on my N10+'s. On a display that's not acceptable. It's a manufacturing defect and right where it's always in your face.
Worse, pretty sure Samsung was aware of this defect but they shipped them anyway. Like a brat they do what they want then make lame bs excuses for their actions. This isn't a injection molding tab Sammy, it's a screw up.
At this point there's no telling if over time it will get worse and/or spread. I'd return it for a cash refund especially at this price point, where the defect is and Samsung's condescending attitude.
but this is only visible with a strong light source, with certain angle of light with screen off. it has no impact on usability. i have seen it in the past on other curved displays

I upgraded to s23u with EE and i got it on 13th , 512gb ,green. Everything fine,until 3 days later when i installed a Samsung screen protector on,using a flashlight i was eyeballing for dust particles using a sticker. Right bottom corner i noticed a smudge, wiped off,still there, anyway upon close look ,in certain angle using the flashlight, i noticed this crease/bubble/dent around 4mm in width and 2mm height . To me it looks like a dent inwards rather than a bubble. Checked my pixel 7pro,nothing, checked my missus s21plus(flat screen),nothing, then i remembered i have stashed a galaxy s8(still works a take faster photos than s23u though) anything like this,screen was perfect.
Don't get me wrong, only in bright light ,shining directly on the screen you can see it. The touch screen works perfectly.
I contacted EE, the tech support said it looks like delamination or sort and could spread in time, right ,i said i do like the phone and i would like an exchange. EE delivered next day the replacement, as you guessed, same issue, this time half in size,almost not visible, but because i knew where and how to look ,i spotted it right away. Also very fine crease on the right,but almost not visible(unless you know what to look for).
Can i live with this ,yes i can,do i want to take a risk,thinking that potentially, ot could spread over thetime,hmm ,i don't. Opened a second return.
For ppl who said that this is not a big deal,remember, th ise damn phone is expensive and it should be perfect,like my previous s22ultra amd my 5 years old S8

I'm still having trouble seeing it in these pictures, even when it's directly pointed out, lol. I'm not gonna examine my phone. It looks generally fine and I'm gonna stick with it.

I think the issue is that most people wouldn't even notice if someone didn't point it out to them in special lighting. I think you should be able to discuss and point out anything you deem flawed. But on the other end you should also expect pushback from people who think you are just being spoiled when you have the option to return it. I have noticed it on my Galaxy S23 Ultra US version but only by looking at it in lighting. I think the device is fantastic and even with that little flaw I will keep my device since I can't really notice it since I have a case on it.

It's probably present on certain batches; some will have it, others not. A major QC screw up. If the defect was minor you wouldn't be able to see it at all.
This is a defect that could effect the survivability of the glass. Glass is subject to some of the laws of hydrodynamics. This deformity causes new stress points. It may not crack there but in another area of the display, hydrodynamics. Glass is a peculiar substance with bizarre properties. Of course if it breaks Samsung will say it's your fault for dropping it.
