Car fitment/usb cable/adapters - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have a small cradle placed at the lower left corner of the windshield in my car.

This arrangement worked quite well with the original evo since the power connector was at the bottom.
The new evo now has it on the side.
If you notice above, the flat spot of the connector is nearest the screen, not the bottom of the device.
Since I don't want to strain the existing cable or put additional strain on the jack, a 90 deg micro usb cord/adapter is necessary.
I found this on ebay -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-degree-r...976119?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item256fc511f7
OR
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-5..._USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item41642d957a
This item appears to accept a micro usb and is just a dongle for micro usb to 90 deg micro usb.
Finally, a bit pricey, but will allow you to use a mini usb cable instead.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-mini-5p...689104?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5ae6e2f0d0
I just ordered the 2nd one from the bottom as I already have a straight micro usb cable already routed in the car.
I'm open to any other suggestions. The part above should work, but if it doesn't, it's only $3 dollars.

Just wanted to give a small update.
The dongle ordered on ebay from china arrived the other day. Total length is about a foot.
It fits the car mount very well, is not in the way, and puts the least amount of strain on the phone's connect. Here' s a pic of the mount i'm using.

i bought a completely new cable with the right angle connector so i could avoid the extra bulk of using an adaptor:

It's also available in LEFT ANGLE if you want the cable to come down instead of going up.
at Amazon in various lengths:
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-3-Fe...HJDS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338677526&sr=8-1

Actually, I had the cable just the right length for the old evo 4g. With the new one and the side, it wasn't long enough to reach. With this dongle/extension, there's plenty of length and slack.

Which dock is this?

^^That looks like a proclip mount.
You buy it in two parts, one that custom fits the car, the other the device.
http://www.proclipusa.com/
Too pricey for me though.

Which clip is that? I also have a ProClipUSA car adapter and phone adapter for my original EVO. I also have a body protector similar to what is pictured. So, what phone mount is that being used that can be used with the new EVO LTE?

the part that is attached to the car is indeed proclip, however the mount that the phone goes in to is from slipgrip. I used the ball joint from my old proclip touchpro 2 mount and made some light mods and screwed it in to the slipgrip mount. They do it for naked devices or in this case the sprint silicone sleeve. Used to have one for my ballistic HC evo 4g and it was excellent.

This 2 part mount (seen in first post) from arkon works great for the windshield mount.
http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-MG178-U...9K2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338783678&sr=8-1
The part the holds the phone also has a socket hole to accept a 1/2" hole. Same size as used by garmin windshield/bean bag mounts. The holder is spring loaded and opens up to accept a rather wide device (specs on the arkon site). It is designed to grasp the phone in portrait mode, however can be rotated 360 deg to what ever position is appropriate.

Cool! Thanks guys! I'm thinking of turning my old EVO into a DashCam, and now I know I can get a SlipGrip mount for my new EVO with its case protector still on! Bonus: I get to still use my ProClipsUSA car mount!

I had a great ProClip mount for my Evo4G - it had a built in MicroUSB connector so I just slide the phone in and it was on charge. I modified it with a dremel and took the bottom off, then stretched it out until it could hold the EvoLTE. Not as elegent, but works until ProClip comes out with a mount designed for this phone.
I'll upload a picture next time I'm in the car.

Boxwave HTC Wizard docking station review.

This is my first post after lurking for a while, normally it would be a question, but instead I have decided to post a mini-review of the Boxwave docing station.
The Boxwave Wizard docking station is a good looking, well packaged unit. It includes a wall charger and has a built in USB cable. The unit it self comes in two pieces. The construction seems very good, with no gaps in the plastic seams. It is rather light and moves on the desk easily. It would have been nice if Boxware would have weighted the base more and/or included feet that were made of stickier rubber to prevent the movement.

The two pieces are the base unit and a clear backrest that just snaps into place. When the unit is plugged into an active USB port or the included power adapter is plugged in, a blue LED inside the base shines up through the clear backrest. It is one of those unnecessary features that add a nice touch to the look of the unit.
Placing the Wizard in the cradle is a straightforward affair. Just angle the unit to match the backrest and slide it down over the USB plug that sticks out from the bottom of the cradle. To remove, I have found it a little easier to tilt the unit forward a few degrees and then pull up on the Wizard. When the Wizard is in the cradle it will sit back about 15 degrees allowing you to easily see the screen from your desk chair.
While you can slide the Wizard open sitting in the Boxwave cradle, you cannot really use it to type as there is no facility to turn the cradle on it's side. The steep angle also prevents comfortable use for prolonged periods of time.
The Wizard will charge with just the USB cable plugged in although it will be slower than when the power adapter is plugged into the cradle.
Overall, I would rate this cradle as 'must have' accessory for the Wizard for those that need access to both charging and syncing and access to the Wizard screen all at the same time, without taking up too much desk space.
There is now a USB cradle that keeps the unit open or closed at keyboard horizontally for around US$29.
See PocketSolutions.com. I have no commercial or other interest in this site.

I have both cradles, and for my Cingular 8125, the horizontal cradle was a bit scary to use--the rubber strip on the 8125's back was thick and grippy enough that the unit required an uncomfortable amount of force to seat in or remove from the cradle.
By way of contrast, I *love* the vertical Boxwave cradle. I've used it daily for over a month.

Would you describe how the USB port gets connected on the horizontal cradle? I looked at the photos on the website and it doesn't show how how it clips in and I can't imagine how it's done.

The USB port is inside the right-hand side of the cradle. You have to slide in the 8125 from the left, and it DOES take some lining up of the port and clip to seat it correctly.
I've had this cradle for over 3 months. Other than having to take an extra couple of seconds to make sure the USB port is lined up to the clip, I have absolutely no issues at all with it. I don't even mind using the 8125 in the horizontal (landscape mode -- actually gives me "hands-free" access to the keyboard to enter data).
I keep my 8125 hooked into the cradle all night and "grab-'n-go" on my way to work in the morning. Does a GREAT job of charging!!

Best window mount?

Does anyone know of any cheap suction window mounts that are made to hold Hermes device (8525)?
Personally I would not recommend or risk using a cheap suction mount for a £400 device in case the quality sucks, and it dislodges from the glass and causes major damage to your device. Then the £15 you have saved from buying a quality mount pales into insignificance. I use a Brodit vent mount as these are a lot more secure, have you considered one of these?

The vents in my SCion xB are questionable at best, not sure I'd stick a vent mount on them. I used a suction window mount for my Genio PPC with a CF GPS for years and it never fell off the window.
Does your device not get real hot if you have the heat on in the winter?
My Hermes stays as normal because I just shut off that vent, similar to the one in the picture on the right

^ holy devices in your car!
on topic, I grab most of my electronic doo-dads from www.eforcity.com
I use their universal suction cup mount. Hasn't failed me yet.
Ebay !!!
I got one from ebay.
First time i drove i had the window up cause i mounted it on the window side of the stearing wheel. But i had no issues with it at all. And it was like $25AU shipped.
I bought a Bracketron Mobile Grip-It Windshield Mount for Mobile Devices from best buy.. was $32 and I'm pretty happy with it. Like the manual says, it works best when resting on the dashboard, 14" arm is helpful with my far away windshield

thanks i been looking for one for when i got the gps running.
On really hot days my ebay bought mount falls off. :/
I had to put the bottom of the mount resting on my dash for it to not fall, i wouldn't recommend the ebay ones.
hmm, i havent had this problem at all, even though I expected it!
Its sometimes hard to get the suctioncup off the windshiled even AFTER the mechanical lever is released!
How close does yours look to the picture of the bracketron universal at bestbuy.com?
I've got the Best Buy one as well - seems to work fine. One thing I liked about it was that the rubber pads on the sides can be moved up or down the phone to avoid pushing the buttons on the sides when squeezing down on the phone (like the PTT button).
ive had pdas in my cars about 5 years now, and ive found even the expensive suction mounts arnt all that!
So i tend to find a suitable plastic holder, attach a bracket to the back, home made bit of bent metal, and fix it in behind a panel or vent to leave no marks in the dash!
Ive dont plenty of track days and the phones have been safe.

Car Mount Recommendations

Any suggestions? Seen a few on eBay but not sure of the quality...
Yep. Checkout www.brodit.se . Really good quality and no low budget ebay solutions. They have complete car mounts with charger. I've have had one for my Pda and for my other nokia mobile phone and now I've ordered for my Htc Touch HD.

Second that. I have the Pro mount which fits in my car with no screw holes etc and then use their active mounts to screw into the pro mount. Charges phone perfectly and holds it great. Have used them for years now on all my phones, perfect!

great quality, cannot fault brodit! dont forget you will need a clip
I'll add my question to this thread.
What would you guys recommend for me, considering that I often drive different types of rental cars? I checked the brodit website, but their products are made for specific car models, so it doesn't help my situation.
I have been looking at this one on ebay. Does anyone have any experience with this one? Does it stick well and is it stable? Will it only hold on glass?
I just have this fear that my HD will fall of it I hit a bump on the road.

And what about the type that clips on the air vents? How stable is that?
Here is a link to one on ebay. It also rotates 360° for portrait or landscape viewing.
UPDATE:
I bought the holder in the first picture above. You can read my review on it in Post #8 below.
I have a brodit mount. I think they are about the best ones made. They are expensive but I think that are worth it.
Many thanks all. :
REVIEW of car holder from post above
I just wanted to add my review to the first picture I posted above (holder with suction cup). But first - really quickly - as far as the second picture (holder for air vents), most of the reviews I found did not recommend it because it does not fit well on all vents, it is not stable, and it is often hard to remove from the vents.
So, now on to the suction holder from the first picture:
I got the HD holder for the car today and tested it out. I definitely like it. The suction cup sticks really well to the glass (assuming both surfaces are clean, of course). At first, I was scared that the whole thing would loosen up and fall off, and so I kept checking it constantly, but it held totally firm for the 45 minutes I was driving. Even when I went to take it off and I released the suction-lock lever, the remaining suction was still really strong.
The tray that holds the actual phone fits the HD well, and all buttons and ports are clearly accessible. I wish the phone would fit just a little tighter in the tray, but it is still fine. I never worried that it would "fall out" or anything like that. I suppose it's also good that it is not so tight that it could scratch the HD when sliding it in and out. The tray can also be easily removed and re-attached to the arm. Oh - and of course, the HD will NOT fit if you have any protective case around it (such as the silicone or hard plastic covers).
The "arm" part is easily bent and adjusted at the two joints, so you can set the HD at whatever angle you want in any direction. Once set to whatever angle, it will not loosen or bend on its own.
All-in-all, I'm very pleased with this so far and I would definitely recommend it. The user reviews I read for it on Amazon do so likewise.
I hope this helps.
Cheers!
Just throwing it out there. I recently sold my touch HD. I still have brodit car mount. If anyone wants it I'll be happy to sell it for cheap. If your local, i'll take some red bulls PM me!
BTW I love the mount. If I get any other carmount, its going to be a brodit

Car Dock to work with Otterbox Defender

I went to Sprint today to get the car dock. Unfortunately, even with it's extra space for a cover it just isn't big enough to accommodate the Defender. Does anyone have a suggestion on a dock that would work?

keep on the lookout for slipgrip mounts on ebay, the guy does mounts for a lot of the popular cases. It won't have the dock functionality but it'll hold the device at the least, just connect your own power from the cig lighter

That looks like it would work - I have more chargers and cables so don't need a powered dock. Have you used these before? My only concern is that I drive a Suburban and the windshield is a long way from the front of the dash if I am going to mount it low. I suppose I could mount it up near the mirror though.

Yea i have, i got the vent mount and the bike mount and had they guy ship them separately so i could use just the dock part with my proclip vehicle specific mount.
Here's some pics of the old evo setup, the bracket that goes in the dash is from proclip, i just made some small modifications and screwed the mount on to the ball joint that then screws in to the bracket. I ran a second lighter socket to the 5v source behind the original sig lighter, plugged a belkin microusb charger in there and ran the wire out. I also ran a 3.5mm from the line in behind the HU to right near the mount. Its a lot neater now than it is in the pictures as i've ran the wires again but you get the idea.

Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review. I did not get this for free but I did get a little discount from a coupon code I had lol.
I was in the the market for a wireless car charger. I have had one in the past, but the location of my Nexus 6 coil was too located to low for it. So my quest to get the perfect one was on! Upon reviews and forums, I was looking at both the iottie and TYLT wireless car chargers. I was initially leaning towards the TYLT one, but the proprietary plug was the deal breaker for me. I didnt need yet another different cable running in my truck. I already have my cool flux capacitor cig charger in place and would hate to lose it! In any case, I then moved my research to the iottie ones. I have heard decent things and first looked at the iottie flex wireless car charger. This looked like the one! But, I saw there were two versions. The flex and the one touch one. What geared me towards the one Easy One Touch version was that of the many MANY ways you can angle and telescope the mount to view your phone. Being having a heavy and big Nexus 6, I liked the various sizes it can accommodate.
When receiving it, I played with all the various gears and levers and screws and found that that this was very well thought out. However, I cant figure out why they put the suction lever to activate the suction cup was underneath the main arm. But its out of the way so thats one thing I guess. The suction cup is clear but has that SUPER suction adhesive that you can rinse off to reconsitute the adhesive, similar to the airdock mounts and various other iottie products use. This sucker is strong! The charger comes with a plate that has more of this sticky suction cups but I already have one mounted so I used that one. Good back up though.
Another fantastic thing is how you insert and remove the phone from the charger. This is the first mount I have ever used that when you put in the phone to charge, you slide it into the back button that snaps the sides in and will lock into place when stops. Awesome. And to remove, simply cup your hand like you are to remove the device and press the two button/levers on the side and pinch together to release into your hand. No issue at all. I am using a Spigen Ultra hybrid case and the Nexus 6 JUST BARELY FITS to lock into place. With the adjustable chin, it is just perfect.
Oh was it a proprietary cable? NOPE, good ol micro usb! Love it even more!
Any questions? Ask away!
I have the iOttie One Touch XL and I love it, but now that I have a Supcase Bettle case on it, it barely fits anymore. I measured my phone with the case on it and is now 3.5" wide. The one you reviewed lists as 3.3" wide. Do you have your phone in a case? If so, which one and do you have any issues getting it to fit?

Thanks for the quick reply. Might have to reconsider this one if it BARELY fits. Probably just like how it fits into my iOttie XL mount right now.

Have you tried the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless one?
http://www.shopandroid.com/iottie-easy-flex-wireless-qi-standard-charging-car-mount/3A78A17740.htm
Looks like it closes to the max of 3.5 inches where the XL fits to 3.3.
I don't know, the problem with the Easy Flex Wireless is that the mount is so short, so hanging it off the windshield might make it hard to reach.
