Getting my G2 tomorrow ad was wondering what's best to do for the initial charge ?
What did you all do and how do you find your battery because of it ?

I did a 3-4 hour charge until the battery was fully charged...the orange led charge thing goes green and its fine then
right now im managing to get a day with heavy use, which is good

I atcually do the same. But i repeat the process of fully charge and discharge the phone completly about 2-3 times. So the battery gets well trained. I repeat ist about every 2 months. I know it should not be relevant with those new batteries, but i found out it is, and the battery last longer.

it's 2009, just charge it and use it.
when i got mine the battery was ~1/3 full, i charged it till ~2/3, then had to leave and completed the initial charge like two hours later, all works fine, getting somewhat between 4 hours and 3 days of usage.

no, what i meant was what immya just said. that with the modern Li-Ion batteries you should not worry to much about how and when to charge. I just wanted to add that even it is 2009 i observed a far better battery lifecycle and stamina when you try to take care of your batterie. and charge it as decribed. that's my experience. at least for the initial 2-3 charges.

not that i am trying to discredit you here (in fact i would be very interested in such numbers myself), but did you do any tests or comparable setups to check the difference? because if we are talking about "a feeling" that you have this is IMHO not really relevant data. i would like to see two identical phones in a (at least) similar environment, performing the same tasks the same amount of time a day, and with that getting different runtimes on the battery for a period of a few weeks. these two phones don't need to be heros necessarily, as long as they have the same type of battery and can produce comparable results, but as long as this doesn't happen i myself rely on the tone on li-ion batterys in general. which is (and i am not able to quote or prove this): they are robust in terms of regular charging, and worrying about wearing the batterys in or training them isn't worth the effort. again no discredit here, but as long as no comparison has taken place there is effectively no data to analyze... just too much variables.

NiCad batteries work best when fully discharged before re-charging otherwise you get what is called the memory effect. If you are in the habit of topping up before being fully discharged the better 'remembers' how much you let it drain before charging it and then get's the idea somehow that this is what its capacity is and goes flat at the point that it 'expects' to be recharged.
NiMH batteries are much less prone to memory effect. They are the ones that need the 16 hour first charge then subsequent charges are shorter.
Li-Ion - lithium to its friends - are not supposed to suffer any memory effect at all. You are supposed to be able to top up as and when you want without any detrimental effects.
None of the above batteries will last forever and will need replacing after 2 or 3 years of daily use.

Absolutely spot on!
These days batteries do not require dishcharging fully before recharging. Even if the person in the phone shop says "ensure you charge it for 12-14 hours before you use it", this doesn't matter - once the battery is fully charged, it stops charging itself anyway - even if you leave it plugged into a charger!
Same as what's being said already.
To add, it's even better to keep your lithium battery topped. Fully discharging them is actually bad for a lithium battery. Full discharge and heat is what's bad for a lithium battery.

On a more interesting note. A long long time ago I got a MDA Compact aka Qtek s100. And there was a lot of debate here on the forums about the initial charge. In the manual it was stated that you should charge it for like 12 hours or something the first time. Then people obviously also said that was bull, because it had a lithium battery.
But! As for WM2003 it didn't save it's whole registry etc on the ROM but in the RAM. Once the battery was dead, bang! hard reset right there.
So they included a little NiMH battery in the s100 that would keep the RAM 'alive'. And that was the reason it needed such a long first charge, for the NiMH cell.
And for some reason a lot of manufacturers take an 'old' manual text for the first charge of a battery. Although that doesn't happen that often anymore. Especially in the beginning a lot of instructions of how to use a lithium battery were just plain wrong. And they put NiMH or even NiCad instruction in there!
Edit, some instructions as found here (http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm). Talks about laptops, but it's the same nonetheless.
Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.
Batteries with fuel gauge (laptops) should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.
Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)
Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing dates. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.
If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.

Why "deep battery cycling" or "conditioning," is bad for your battery
In summary, "conditioning" your battery is only good for calibrating the tools which predict how long your battery will last.
I.e. people seem to be recommending that new phones should be completely discharged a few times and then fully recharged. In some cases, people are recommending that the phones be left discharged for long periods of time before recharging. THIS IS A BAD IDEA AND WILL NOT HELP BATTERY LIFE.
Again, you can do this to calibrate the battery monitor, but this will not help the battery itself.

"battery conditioning" is only bad if you do it all the time and drain it completely dead often...
Lithium ion batteries don't really need this...
And should only be done if you think you have faulty battery stats due to flahing new software or roms....
We all know this and the people that don't now know.. thanks op for informing the uninformed!

You need to condition it for the phones software as well... Otherwise it will shut off before the battery is actually dead. But yes, you shouldn't do it all the time.

there is a diffrence between a deep cycle and a normal cycle.they are only resistant to developing a memory.
Yes, I know this xda, but this after reading some of the multiple battery life threads it seemed like there was some misinformation floating around. I mean, I know batteries are the cheapest part of the phone and easy to replace, but still. No point in going through all the trouble of multiple deep cycles when it actually does harm to the battery.
Also, I wonder what the people with 2 batteries do, and how this affects the battery meter. Or, if you switch to a higher capacity battery. At what point does the unit recalibrate itself?
So I'm running my aria on CM7-07282011-Nightly. I'm having battery issues, not battery-life issues, but general battery function issues. My stock battery died, then I bought two identical 1500mah batteries, which I have been charging with a standard Li-ion smart charger which I normally use for battery packs I build for various other projects. I just charge one battery while I use the other battery. Anyways the problem is that my phone's battery meter will never go over 80%. I boot up on a fully charged battery, and after two or three minutes have passed(when it first boots up it just shows the % it was at when I took the other battery out), the phone reads something like 74%.
I've thought maybe there was just a problem using two different batteries, so I tried charging one of these batteries in the phone and of course they stop a little above 70%, and sometimes the battery even drains while plugged into, well, any, of my 4 AC wall-plug type chargers or my computer.
I've tried wiping the battery stats, but it didn't do anything, and all the calibration methods I see say to charge until it's at 100%, which I can't get to...
I just wish there was a way to plug in an externally charged battery and reset the battery meter and force it to recognize whatever value is actually 100%....I've searched these forums and googled for two days and found no solution.
Does anyone know how I can fix this??

I'm not sure if there is anything you can do about it. There's almost always going to be some quirks with third party batteries.
A tip is never get 3rd party batteries and the batteries we use love charging so charge whenever possible because if you let your battery die before charging waste builds up and leaves less space for charging.

well, the phone works as long as if the battery has been charged to 100%, so I just wondered if the was something I could do...
So even if the batteries work a long time when fully charged from my external charger, there is no way to fix the battery meter? If I continue using it normally would battery stats eventually callibrate? they are good batteries...just seems like a software problem to me
Where did you buy the batteries from, E-bay??? E-bay and other on-line markets are loaded with Chinese knock-off batteries & SD cards that are fakes and/or not to manufacturer spec products.
If that's what you have, you can't expect the phone to "fix" it.
Battery stats do take a few days to calibrate, but I believe it should still show 100% when charged, if you have a real battery and not something out of spec.
I don't know what the manufacturer specs are, but a fully charged battery reads 4.2v, well within standard Li-ion open-circuit values. There is nothing wrong with these batteries....

Problem is that the percent battery available is not determined my measuring the cell voltage, rather reading a value out of the fuel gauge built into the battery pack. Li-Ion batteries have a rather flat discharge profile then crater at the end, making the cell voltage an unreliable predictor/measure of battery capacity.

So, some of us say that battery calibration is a must after flashing a ROM, while some never calibrate their batter, and few like to calibrate it once every 3-4 months. So it is my request to share your experience and recommendations.

LITHIUM ION BATTERIES DO NOT NEED TO BE CALIBRATED. They have no "memory" effect. There's a charge circuit built into them that constantly monitors the voltage of the battery.
Attempting to calibrate a lithium ion battery will actually cause more wear in a shorter period of time than had you simply left it alone.
Sometimes when you flash ROM to ROM, old batterystats get left behind and mess up the battery. I had a glitch where it said the battery was full but the percentage was only at 92%. I'm not sure if this is a calibration glitch or just a kernel glitch, but calibrating it fixed it.

This is actually one way to calibrate battery.
And calibration means the accurate way to read batt level by ROM, which by any means, cannot harm battery itself.
Not calibrating i had the surprise to wake up with more batt than i went to sleep with. Or, as said here, you can find out that the ROM is indicating you have less batt than you actually do. I goess that is the only thing that can go wrong. Anyways, i only calibrate when flashing new ROM or restorin a backup. And i use BatteryCalibration from market.
I don't know about you guys but everytime I flash a new rom I charge to 100%,reboot in recovery and wipe everything +battery stats.From time to time I prefer to do a calibration process.It's something that i found on lg-p500.ru and works for me.If anyone is interested how I calibrate my battery,look here .

It is recommended that you DONT let your battery fully discharge, ever (it shortens its life) that is one of the reasons android notifies you have a low battery on 20%.

One battery will be recharged with the S2. The other battery with an Anker wall charger. That's just a plan right now

If you are using only one battery it's quite simple how to calibrate the system.
But if you are using 2 batteries alternating then you can run into trouble, because the system is "calibrated" to the first battery.
That means if you are using battery1 until 0%. The system knows battery empty. I you are putting the 2nd - already recharged with a external wall charger - into the S2 then I wouldthink that the system is confused, because you didn't recharged it internal.
I want to use 2 batteries for travelling where I need a lot of juice for GPS.
So I would use the first battery until 0% and then change to the 2nd which is already recharged and then draining it until 0% and then again recharging.

You don't need to calibrate the battery on the s2. The device should fix the percentage by itself. I would not recommend that you drain the battery fully to 0% as i have heard that it could damage the battery and use multiple cycles for the one you drain it. If you're running SiyahKernel you can try to reset the fuel chip in extweaks. Some say that it's a placebo but I seem to think that it works.

You are over complicating this, just change the battery when it's flat and everything is ok.. I have 4 batteries, two Samsung and 2 off ebay, I always have one in the phone (obviously!), one charged in my pocket and one in the desktop charger.. Never have to worry about battery life

The batteries should be charged just right if you use the wall charger, however sometimes when you charge in the phone, it might stop at 96% or somewhere around there, sometimes I off the phone and charge, gets it to 100%
You shouldn't worry about calibrating or whatever, new batteries with li-ion battery should be okay without calibration

Sorry for upping this thread, but so (as traslate meaning) can you alternate a 1650 mAh stock battery and a 2000 mAh original Samsung battery without the needing of a wipe/recalibration?

i've heard that calibrating is just a myth or something.. i have to batteries and i just change them whenever. (idk if that's bad or not), i don't wanna complicate it or something lol
Calibrating is a myth. Charge to 100% and enjoy.
Yes, no problem if you are using the same batteries like original 1650mah, just change the battery when empty and recharge

Again, sorry to bring this thread back to life.. However I was wondering if anyone has had issues with using two batteries and having the "fuel gauge" chip fault on them. On my previous Galaxy S3 the chip that is dedicated to measuring battery stats, as found on many other phones, developed issues. This lead to the phone registering increases in battery percentage while off charger - basically the battery history graph at any given time had a 60% chance of going down and 40% of going up.
Could the use of two batteries caused the "fuel gauge" chip to malfunction?
Maybe temporarily. But charging it to full and/or resetting the fuel gauge running a kernel that supports same fixes that issue easily.
