Is it possible to install Android OS (GB or ICS) on iPhone 4 or iOS5?
It would be very hard as the hardware is quite different but theoretically it's possible.

You have what dual booting? iOS?
I haven't heard of it happening. Then again I have no interest in iOS so I wouldn't look for it.

There was a project (iDroid maybe? not sure if that's the name) to bring Android to iPhones, but I think the last model supported was the 3GS. It used the open source openiBoot bootloader (a replacement for Apple's) and I think that was the limiting factor in not supporting past the 3GS.
EDIT: There is a port of openiBoot to the iPhone 4 on going. More info on the whole project here: http://www.idroidproject.org - the "status" page is probably especially interesting to you.

@SifJar, the project you mentioned is interesting, but very likely dead. I happen to be in the exact same situation now and would like to do the following to an iPhone 4 which I bought and is SIM-locked:
Make a full backup of the phone and all its data on LINUX
Fully remove the SIM-lock and make it work with all providers
Completely wipe everything, especially traceable information
Install the latest possible Android, preferrably a port of AOKP
I will press the THANKS-button for every useful answer!

Not going to happen any time soon. Apple has massive lockdowns on their devices. Even if someone breaks into it that far, it will be well past the devices lifetime. I have tried the iDroid project, and even when their was work, it was very primitive and not worth actually trying to use. Don't expect an iPhone to work well in Linux any time soon (maybe ever) or be able to back up without a jailbreak.
Well that's very hard. Because apple is closed source and they have encrypted whole system. Can anybody imagine why would anybody change a iPhone to android. I mean what's the point of getting iPhone then..well you can sim locked broked. Jailbreak if you want some more functions. Just purchase a new android. You will more than apple 4S in cheap android.

The iDroid Project doesn't seem to support iPhone 4, but has anyone here gotten it to work on an iPhone 4.

where is the proof, what I have seen on the thread of storage card, is the performance due to the class, is still very debatable.
but if this is true, it would be great.
I'm still with the original Storage card class 2, therefore, not whether there is enough class, 4 or 6 or 10.

Let’s not get into an argument about NAND versus SD card. (FYI, let us not forget SD card consumes more power than NAND).
Yes, HD2 will get Gingerbread. Why? Because this is frickin XDA. N1, Desire, and probably even the G1 (for some reason) will get Gingerbread…just because this is XDA and they do the “impossible”.
i think also that desire or nexus one or galaxy s willnot get the 3.0..
But if it goes for example in the new desire hd that will come in the next months mayb we can have it on our hd2 !!!!!!

I cant believe some of you are saying you dont believe the Nexus One wont get it.
It meets all the minium specs for ginger bread, some of gingerbread was demoed on it already at google i/o, and the main reason it will get it is because its the Google Dev phone!! its the phone they are testing it out on as we speak!

+1 - Google itself has stated that the Nexus One will get all future updates - BEFORE any other phones. This is not to say that other phones wont concurrently get the updates, but only that it will be pushed to the N1 first.
If HD2 comunity won't have in Developing house the Master devs that have at moment, I wouldn't believe in this stuffs port, but how they work for us, I'm very optimist they port the gingerbread.
But realistically speaking, if they give us, a froyo 2.2 stock build, like HD2 was a original Android device, for me is enough, and will be forever gratified for the Devs....
If ginger comes better, if not, no problem.
WM dies for me, in the day MS make the statement, that will not give the WM7 upade.....horse for them.....minus one WM7 embassador.......better for Android SO win a new crasy and devote fan.....( I know iPhone SO, Palm Pre, because have one of wichother in the house).

Yes they will. The Nexus is one of the first phones to get it.
The nexus one will get gingerbread for sure, no doubt at all. Meets all requirements and is the official google dev phone. Other phones with similar specs may get it as well (desire, etc). Regardless of who else gets it, I'm sure HD2 will get is, this is friggin XDA. The devs here are known to be able to do just about anything.

Yep, remember people said that froyo couldn't be done on the g1 and look what happened.
Our HD2s meet all the requirements for gingerbread anyway, our hardware is very similar if not nearly identical to some of the other phones which will run gingerbread. I can't imagine it being that hard for the devs.

Check the activity of the Android forums compared to this one. That should answer your question. Currently Android requires some parts of WinMo to work, but I use a very small version of WinMo, ChuckyDroid ROM.
Android development is thriving. WinMo 6.x development is dead. In many ways, Android runs better than WinMo on the HD2.
winmo? people still use that junker? this thing shoulda ran android from the start...
Absolutely, go for it. There is no way you can harm/brick your phone because android is only running off the microSD. Download a few different builds and try them out. The worst that can happen is ending back up in windows mobile. I would reccoment trying shubCraft.
Well, I guess it depends on the compatibility issues of the software you use. In my case, right now, I cannot leave WinMo as of yet because of that.

No way for me
I've had the Nexus One for the last 5 months and Android running on the Hd2 is like a car without oil in the engine: VERY ROUGH
For someone who hasn't had a Nexus One yet then yeah the Android port will be fine for you and you wont know the difference but for me I can DEF feel it and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Lag + not everything works = I'd rather have WinMo 6.5 for the rest of the Hd2's life unless the can start making the Android versions smoother/work better.

I sold my Nexus One in order to buy an Hd2 for cheap off of craigslist knowing that I might never even run Android on it. I wanted to give Windows Mobile a chance and learn the basics before trying to port Android. Turns out it was the best decision I could have made since I actually prefer Windows Mobile more than Android!
People complaining about a phone they have already purchased need to get a life and better purchasing skills
I don't understand all this hype about Android. From what I have seen it's all over-hyped on the HD2. I went to the Android section expecting to be blown away by the amazing detail, features and screens of Android. Instead i've been underwhelmed and put off of Android. The Interface looks more like a step backwards about 10 years.
Where is the holy grail of Android for HD2 that is going to make us all want to switch to Android from WinMo?
Ok - I get it that for geeks Android might be the way forward as it's all open source and available to tinker with - but for people who just want a phone that works - WinMo 6.5x runs rings around Android. God help us when WinMo 7 arrives on the scene.
I understand that this may start a flaming session - but my mind is open to be converted - point the way.....show me the eye candy...
what making android not work 100% on htc hd2?

just don't be a troll with that 'iphone suck'.
Apple's phone in the 4 version is a good device.
My brother has one, got for a cheap price here in Brazil. (R$ 500,00 something like $200,00)
Using the system we can see how apple approach is on the minimum details level and Android isnt that cos we have too much fragmentation. (Btw, samsung have a very good android mod on Galaxy SII, gratz Samsung!)
So, i like android, i'm not going to try buy a iPhone, but hey, that thing has his merits, until 2007 we all are stuck with phones like blackberry or nokia, no touchscreen devices Thank you apple, AGAIN, PC+Phones. (but i never had a **** from you )

Kernels are harder to make IMO
Well... I'm myself embarking on this trip of developing Android apps (I'm a Software Engineer but I have not touched a line of code in a few years), and I can give you a couple of suggestions about it.
The good thing about Android apps development is that is totally free to start since the two main tools that you'll use are completely free: The Android SDK and Eclipse IDE. Tools-wise those are the only two things that you'll need initially (beside a fairly decent computer of course).
If you can spend a few bucks I've found that the book "Learning Android" is pretty good, with a good level of detail on the inner workings of the Android OS and a hands-on project throughout the whole book (and Android Twitter Client). The book is fairly recent (March 2011) so it covers Android Gingerbread, unfortunately the only issue with the book is that the Twitter client project was created before Twitter switched their authentication api from simple login to oAuth (a token based authentication API very popular nowadays), so the code on the book will not work right out of the box without some modifications on the authentication module. There's a new Andorid development book from the same publisher (O'reilly) available on Amazon called "Programming Android" which was released earlier this month, so I would guess that whatever the project is on that new one it should work right out of the box.
If you wanna get the hang of it without spending a buck you can start with a great tutorial series on Android development available on Youtube here: "TheNewBoston Android Tutorials". The tutorials cover Android development in much of the same way as most books, starting from scratch on installing and configuring the Android SDK and Eclipse to basic development and some advanced topics.
I must say that compared to the things that I was developing when I was still coding a few years ago (Java Enterprise Apps) Android development seems pretty much straight-forward, and I think that what really matters is changing the paradigm to "Mobile Apps", since they behave pretty much differently than normal enterprise apps.
Hope that helps.
Thank you so much, I used to do some Java coding for games so I know alot about Java, but ill check out all those things you all offered. Thanks! Oh and the iPhone thing, they're a good phone, but I can't afford one and prefer android.

I think the first thing you should and really most important thing to do is pick ONE problem and try and fix it. Maybe this is "I don't like that battery icon" or maybe it is something like "I want my kernel to swap out less and keep more data in RAM so it's a bit speedier".
Unfortunately there is so much going on in Android that probably no single developer can walk you through all of it, not even Linus Torvalds or Larry Page (like we say "We all stand on the shoulders of giants"). If you are new to Linux in general (which Android is) and you want to do some kernel work, a good first step is to start dual-booting Ubuntu or another friendly Linux distribution.
I am some experience with linux in computers, ps3's, even an experimental build me and a few others devoloped for an xbox which turned out unsuccessful. I just honestly dont know where to start to apply what I know to android phones.
here's a slightly dated but pretty good howto on Android kernel building
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-rooting-roms-hacks/8072-how-build-your-own-kernel-package-source.html
lots of stuff comes up on google's pages about building Android

have fun!

If he could create a script or program that could take an IPSW (Firmware file) and make it "android ready" for lack of a better term, he would be completely safe. As the user would be downloading the IPSW and supplying it not him. Also the IPSW are available freely on Apple's site so they couldn't come after the users at that point at all. He just has to find a way to do that (not going to be easy).
Also iOS source is available on apple's dev site for anyone to look at it. It's just mostly copywrited (besides the BSD portions). I'm not sure if all of it's there but I have looked at some of it in the past for hints to exploits for jailbreaking.

I have some development background, and from my knowledge of iOS and ARM Devices this would be quite a task if this is what he is doing.
I really want to believe this is real but I just found a link from github by someone called Peter42 who freshly uploaded a "BootDroid" code.
Last update to his blog dated 24 March is the same date the files were uploaded.
I have a Motorola Xoom and believe I can't test them.
Could anyone (for God's sake!) confirm whether they were real or not?
If possible, I already downloaded the files and would upload them for you in case original was removed.
this should be awesome, running ios in the powerfull SII... just for shutup the izombies xP
Even better, the upcoming Galaxy SIII!
But for real, can anyone try that?
I just ran the installation process on my Motorola Xoom and didn't notice any difference like a new app nor by or through restarting.
I'm kinda hyped up on this and would love to brag about how Android is superior to iOS if it was true

I don't really know if this was the link to the program or not though it's called the same.
But as I said before, these files were uploaded the day he last updated his post.
You can download it from there.
I don't really know how this should work since it doesn't even have iOS firmware files but I figured someone with a supported device could try and see for himself.
Nothing appeared on my Xoom at all which is not supported!
And, you can uninstall it from the same installation wizard.
Hi everybody !
Sorry for my english, I'm french.
I am really interested on this application, so I wonder if somebody has already succed in make it working ?
I' ve downloaded the Zip package on the website shared on the link below, but I don't understand how to instal it...
I think that even if it's possible to run iOs and Adroid on a Iphone, it woould be difficult to do the same on a androphone beacause iOs in not an open source system ...
Can somebody help me please ?
Thanks to you guys
So...I just got an Android ~5 days ago. My friend told me to root the phone and get plain Android on it instead of HTC's bloated modified version of it. I'm not a newbie to SSH and managing linux via prompt (I assume rooting the phone is what that means?..) Anyway, I have no clue what I'm doing. I've been an iPhone user for...~2 years. I'm completely new to Android.
Can anyone start me on the right path, maybe give me some explanations as to what I'm actually doing? Does this void my warranty with Best Buy (probably...jailbreaking the iPhone does, but recovering from that is easy-peezy..)
I'd like to tinker with my phone, but it seems so much more complicated to fix the phone if I make an oops than doing so with an iPhone does.
Thanks in advance.
Assuming you have the DNA, as that is the section you are in, there is quite a few helpful threads already. Check the sticky posts, they usually link to helpful threads.
With the speed of the quad core phones, debloating isn't needed as much as before, but rooting does have it's ups and downs.
I found that AOSP (pure android) based roms compared to sense (HTC software) are a little mote buggy and not as fluid. They feel snappier, but really aren't.
Try some sense based roms before going full aosp on this device. Take it from me. My old devices, I would run only AOSP, but after usi.g sense 5 on this phone, it has so.e good HTC only features.

I'll echo Uzephi, give sense a try first. If you really want to tinker make sure to make a nandroid in recovery. You will probably need to use either moonshine or rum runner to do what's called s-off your phone first. That will also root it. I've found the easiest way to do that is to boot to a live USB Linux, then you don't have to deal with driver issues. If you have windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit there have been fastboot issues with drivers seeing the phone for some users, myself included. Give us some more info on what your PC set up and phone OS versions are and we can help some more when and if you want. Have you gotten the latest OTAs.

My PC is a Windows 7 Ult and my Phone is HTC Droid DNA (Android v4.2.2 and Sense v5)
Thanks guys for the replies. I have no clue what this Android jargon is mostly, can I get some clarification or where I can read about it? Thanks a bunch.

Android 4.2 is the base operating system and HTC customized it to their liking, which they call Sense, and you have version 5 of Sense.

Android phone manufacturers like to give their phones a specific look and feel, which is why android phones can look so different. This modification/augmentation of the base android software environment is commonly referred to as a UI (user interface), or Skin.
The term 'skin' is a terrible over-simplification, but it gets the point across. The vanilla Android software environment is, for many, quite boring, and not as powerful as it can be. Companies like HTC and Samsung incorporate cool animations, graphics, and sounds effects, as well as software that takes advantage of their camera's capabilities.
HTC's UI is called Sense
Samsung's is called TouchWiz Motorola's used to be called Blur (don't know if it still is)

If you're brand new to Android, I would just use the phone as it is now without rooting or putting a custom ROM on it. Once you're comfortable and familiar with Android then you can decided if you want to root and rom.

Rooting is akin to jailbreak, gaining control of your phone. You can root your phone (get root directory access) and still remain completely stock for your Rom.
I personally have had the best experience with sense based roms. Your experience may differ depending on what you use.
If you want to use mobile hotspot on your phone without paying subscription then rooting is a must.
Linux used to be a must to root. Now there are windows based options, I used moonshine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay extra to use your phone as a mobile hotspot if you're on a capped data plan. I think only unlimited data folks are expected to pay extra to use that feature.

That might be right. I've got the unlimited data. My co workers with company phones also have to pay for the hot spot.

Yes, correct, capped data is forbidden by law to charge for mobile hotspot, unlimited data is chargeable.
Edit* At OP, Sense is the king flavor of android, stick unrooted for a while as you won't really see a need for it yet, unless you want to go and throw on different ROM's and try them out, which in that case def. go and try viperDNA (best sense ROM avail.) AOSP/CM based ROM's are still a WIP and are ok to use but you will miss out on everything sense (sense apps, widgets, features, and even some hardware features)
Gaining root is becoming the sys admin of the phone, you would be able to read/write to the system partition of the phone and execute system privileged commands that are more for the hacker/modder/enthusiast (not normal user, you really wouldn't find a use for that type of stuff, the only app that would serve you good is "Titanium Backup" that does require root but it basically backs up all of the apps and their data)
