Currently, I'm using CM 7.2 RC2.
I'm willing to try Lasan's MIUI ROM.
But, what if I decide to come back to CM 7.2 and don't want to reconfigure everything?
I know that I must create a backup before wiping current data.
How do I restore? Does the backup file contain the whole system and old cache?
Should I firstly flash the ROM and then the backup file?
Or should I flash the backup file directly?

CWM backup includes the whole /system, /data, /cache, dalvik-cache and android-secure folders. All settings are saved in /data, so no reconfiguration is needed after restoring.
First make backup and then install the ROM, else you will back up your new ROM, losing all your data.

in XRecovery, do a backup of your ROM, reinstall the original ROM, then do an advanced restore of just the data partition of the backup you just made. You should end up with the Stock Rom but all your settings will be the same as you had them when you did the backup. You'll also keep all your apps, messages and such this way.
Ok I installed the rom again, then gapps, hotfix and then I was clicking in the Advenced Restore and there are : System restore, Cache Restore etc. I got click only data, but what with these last, only data ? Or I must restore some other things ?.

Just "Restore data" and you'll be ok.
Ok, but what was saved in the ( system restore ) function. ?

You first did a backup in XRecovery. XRecovery would have did a complete backup of your \System, \Cach and \Data partitions. Since you only want to restore the \Data partition you go into Advanced Restore, select the backup you just did and then select Restore Data.
Yes, but when I not restore the system, then what that will do, will I have an error maybe ?
Hey guys,
Im currently on latest MIUI.
Can I flash newest VillainROM within recovery, do I have to wipe (idc if I have to) and do you think I will succeed.
Thanxx
Yes you can, but you gotta wipe the data partitions and caches. Do a nandroid backup before you start. If you wanna keep your user app data, use titanium backup
I downloaded miui 2.11.2 and it's on ics. I was wondering if I have to flash this with full wipe cause I don't want to lose my data and stuff.
You'd probably have to wipe. Do a full rom backup in CWM and flash MIUI without wipe. If that doesn't work, restore rom and backup using titanium backup or some other backup app, then wipe and flash MIUI, and install apps and restore data.
Probably best if you download the apps yourself then use backup app to restore data only.
Dear XDAers,
I would like to ask whether if I nandroid backup my xxlsj rom, can I restore the backup in another rom (get back my app data, like titanium backup?)? Or is it going to be back to the xxlsj rom?
And can I flash my backup (lsj) without flashing lsj then restore backup?
Thanks

yes in cwm backup & restore go to advance restore and you can restore boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext...
you can restore only data from there. But you might get fc's on some apps if you will restore data backed up in xxlsj and restore in AOSP or AOKP... may be sometimes phone sticks at boot also...
so watch what you are doing...

Alright, so doing a Nandroid backup means backing up the whole OS? When restoring the backup on AOSP or AOKP, etc, means it will still go back to the backuped ROM?

Yes if you are restoring from internal or external sd it will restore to that ROM in which you had made backup and if you go to advance restore option, you can restore data only...
Been having some issues with my SGS3 and charging, using JellyBam (v7, fairly old, so thought I would start fresh on latest version).
Using CWM5, I did a backup. Factory reset + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache, then flashed the new ROM. Figured out what I needed to for the charging issues, but forgot I didn't to a titanium backup with all my apps, and more importantly the app data.
I can confirm looking in the CWM data.ext4.tar that the data I want is in there.
So I backed up my new flash setup, restored the previous backup, thinking I would do a titanium backup and get everything setup in my newly flashed ROM. After restore (I did another factory reset + cache + dalvik wipe first), it presents me with the google login wizard, and it seems to have remembered some of my apps but not others. So the restore seems to not have worked.
If I try reinstalling the app it gives me the 'Unknown error code during application install: "-24"' error
Any ideas how I can get the restore to work correctly?
OR some way from the fresh install (providing that restore works too) to grab the app data from my data.ext4.tar and move it into my working install? I tried just copying the file into /data/data but that didnt seem to do the trick
Old CWM
Flash the firmware you made a cwm backup of restore via CWM .
Flash Philz recovery and make a new backup .
Now get 'error while restoring /data'. Seems to be an issue on CWM5 for >2GB backups.
Going to try flashing Philz recovery and try again
Nope no joy. Is there any way I can extract data from a nandroid backup?
As I'm only really fussed about a handful of apps so could do it manually

maybe there is the way, but is better if you make a update of your CWM,... 6.0.3 or 0.4 touch... by the way I always use two mores apps for backing up data from my SIII ... one for sms, contacts ecc.. to extSDcard "Super backup pro" and the other app for backup data apps "Ultimate backup pro"
