am i the only one tired of trying to keep up with the 50+ pages of the issues thread and the chatter thread??
i was thinking of setting up a bugzilla like website for the xda live ROM.... but that would defeat the purpose of everything being in one place.... moderators/administrators is there anyway of setting up a hermesbugzilla.xda-developers.com site on your servers???
or anyone have a better idea?
Tell me about it, its a bit frustrating reading the same issues over and over again - especially when they've already been answered a million times.
How can I change the keyboard to suit my 8525 again? .
I don't think it warrants a bugzilla site, perhaps another Wiki page?
or new users have to be forced to read the wiki page before they can browse the forums....
There should be a new forum that only "Senior Members" can access That way we can just ignore the n00bs
I've got no problem with noobs, its great that they're keen on learning about their device - but that word is very important, learning. People need to learn to do some research themselves before asking questions, most of them have already been answered!

its not learning.... its reading first... they try and learn before reading and they brick their devices....
Before I attempted to do a single thing to my hermes, I spent a few *weeks* reading, learning, understanding and playing so that when the time finally came to do the deed, it went flawlessly.
It is a process. You need to UNDERSTAND what you're doing, know the reason WHY you're doing it, and LEARN about the process!
If you don't want to invest the time to understand, then just don't bother--it'll save you a bricked device.

Could we have a private area only for people who can pass a test based on the Wiki?
Q1) You just bought a new TyTn. You want to put WM6 on it. What is the FIRST thing you should do?
a) Download Des' SSPL RUU
b) Carefully read the Wiki and all related threads
c) Use Pof's version 3 unlocker to SuperCID your device
d) Download XDA-Live and run the upgrade program
I'm guessing that a lot of n00bs can't figure out the right answer to the above... It's multiple choice. What's YOUR answer?

Yeah, but, I've had PDA's for as long as PDA's existed.. My first one was a Palm Pilot 5000 (3Com's version of it). I got it about 2 weeks after it was released.
I've owned PPC's for about 3+years, and am an MCSE (so, I understand the technology inside the version of Windows it uses pretty well).
I read for a while before joining; but, quite frankly, I didn't have a reason to join here before I did--the 8525 didn't exist until about a week before I bought it!

If we didn't brick devices, the senior's wouldn't be developing unbricking techniques which allow us to do much more.
If we sensor, test or discriminate then we lose the purpose of this forum (maybe even become like Microsh*t). How would Pof, Olipro, Kyphur etc have become members if they hadn't been able to ask the questions which helped teach them their skills.
The main reason there are so many repeat or dumb questions out now is because there have been so many new tools and Roms released in such a short time. This will settle down as development slows.
Maybe the best way round this is to put a front screen to all the forums giving a very brief guide how to use the Wiki and search facility. I'd also include a statement that any question which have been asked and answered before will be deleted and that the poster needs to research the question. This message could also be linked to show on a posters screen for each of his first 5 posts so he couldn't bypass the warning/advice.
Just my opinions, but I hate sensoring and eliteism (don't let the dummies ask ME questions), particularly when the sensors have benefitted from the source they are sensoring.

i wasnt talking about sensoring... just preaching the knowledge before you make a choice to flash or cook or play with roms....
Its not the fact that questions are asked - questions are good!
Its the fact that people make no effort to research and find out the answers for themselves before asking it. How many times has "How do I fix the keyboard on my 8525", "How do I enable GPS", "How do I flash this ROM", etc - when the answers are all there, easy to find.
Maybe an alternative would be to have 3 levels of each forum, Jumior, member and senior...
Juniors could only post in junior forum but could read all 3,
Members could post in member and junior forums and read all 3
Seniors could post and read all 3.
Any member or senior who posts too many 'dumb' threads could be warned and possibly bumped down a level by the mods.
This way anyone can help people less experienced, and the less experienced can learn from everyone by reading. Any posts you make will be to your peers but may be answered by your seniors.
Also, the likes of Kyphur and Olipro who are actively developing can ask questions and get answers from the people with the most experience.
I still don't like this too much because there is no reason for more senior members to read junior forums, but it does leave the whole forum accessible to all and puts the emphasis on juniors to ask and answer questions to gain knowledge and thus get 'promoted'.
Why does every forum end up with this debate? Cos its human nature...
People get excited about flashing new roms to their devices and go ahead and do it and then panic when their beloved gadget doesn't work properly...
Yes - people should read the wiki before a) doing stuff and b) asking question but if everyone behaved exactly the way they "should", the world would be a really boring place.
I personally made sure that I read up before flashing WMXL1 and 2 - they were my first xda flashes - but I understand why loads of people dont. Yes repeat questions are annoying, but in some cases they are asked again because the answer given is too high-brow for the noobs to understand...
Oh and its "censor" !
For bugs and enhancements tracking my personal favorite is Jira. Very widespread among open source and commercial projects. They have a Community & Open Source License model where you can get it for free ...
http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/
don't agree - don't like it - should'nt do it !
How do you judge who is a noob and who is not? and who does that?
What criteria will be used?
We are opening up a big and unnecessary debate here.
Actually with all stupid questions on this site, we do actually learn from each other at ALL levels.
This is what make this site an unbelievable success.
Hello all, I am needing to unlock an AT&T 8525 to use on T-Mobile's network.
Can anyone give me some cliff notes? Mainly just differences. I have unlocked and reflashed quite a few MDAs so I am just looking to see whats different on doing this to a newer phone. I would imagine lokiwiz.bat wouldn't be used for this? What is the OEM radio? Is there an official WM6 ROM available?
Thanks in advance!

When you search, or read anything, you may find people being more co-operative. Posting a new thread is very likely to get you flamed!
Since the 8525 is a Hermes in a coat, unlocking is going to be the same as any other Hermes based device. It doesn't take a rocket scientest to work that out!
Stickies are there for a reason! - If you'd looked through the first 5 threads in the forum you posted this in, you'd have found what you needed, and then, if you had an issue with that because you couldn't be asked to read the post, then you could have posted in that thread!!!
Or, as someone else did, you could have PMed someone - including me!, asking for clarification on the wiki page.
To be honest with you, I don't think posting in a thread 100 pages long yields great results based on my past experiences with XDA. Maybe that's just the Wizard section though...
I get what you are saying but I don't think you are getting what I am saying. I read plenty. I am seeing a lot of terms and processes that don't seem the same that I am used to so I was just looking for opinions. If you want to cripple your "section" of this forum by not letting someone asK for some opinions then so be it. I am not just some n00b logging in asking "hey how i unlock dis fone i got today?"
Sadly enough there is much chat in threads.
Even a comparison about the Arc and X10 in a thread about a mod.
Would it be possible to just remove posts that are really off-topic?

that's an awful lot of time spent sifting through threads and threads full of crap...
I completely agree. Please somebody do something about this. Start giving out bans. The ratio of crap to actual development talk is at least 10-1. It seriously hinders the ability of the forum to facilitate collaboration on the projects being done.

i've been on xda for quite some time, and i will admit that the x10 forums are the biggest cluster of useless banter, repetitive topics/questions and un-uniformed threads.
however, this is not the mods faults. there are posts for rules, and outlines for thread title structures and thread behavior. however, it seems that a lot of the x10 owners have a hard time following these rules and guidelines.
i can't imagine how anyone new to the game could come here and follow anything as far as learning how to mod their x10.
Just a hint: This might be more effective if it was in the correct forum.

True. I am just trying to make the point that there is a lot of both going on. (It seems you got my point...it's borderline hypocrisy)
I find myself in the middle. The only time I get frustrated is when I'm searching for an answer or it's a guide or tutorial. It boils down to time savings.

I must count myself as someone who may not be following all the rules. After following the forums for 6 months and having rooted, xrecovery, tweaked build.prop as well as flashing and bricking two phones, I am finding it hard to move onto a newer rom.
The search function on XDA seems to rely mostly on tags. I get better results trying Google. Only 1 of 5 XDA searches even returns any results at all and often not confined to the subforums I wanted. When posting I do check the suggestions that the system shows as related but again it is inaccurate.
Finally the devs have moved to a short form install which has more steps than in the past. At first we had all inclusive roms which updated baseband and 'firmware'. Now we have many that are parts; baseband and firmware can be independent installs. Dual touch can be separated or not. On top of this we have the roms which have the SE apps or not, other OEM apps or interfaces or themes pre-installed. It's confusion for everyone.
The threads started several versions of some of the roms earlier and many posts do not have a relationship anymore to the current version. It's time to trash the thread and start anew with a locked sticky that has only the instructions and current links.
While the devs have made great strides with the instructions, I believe most of the readers here want as few steps as possible without branches and a return to the all-inclusive roms would simplify life for most people instead of trying to figure out what the baseband or preinstalling dual touch or a newer generic SE rom as a prerequisite is needed to get to the rom that we are trying to install.
JMHO.

By far the best way to search is going to Google and using "site:http://forum.xda-developers.com X10 Blah blah blah". I don't even bother with the xda search anymore.

I'm not trying to be a ****, but this is xda-developers, not xda-"cool **** for your phone". This is a place for development, and while the community is here to help everyone learn, people get the priorities wrong. There is a time and place for questions (In the Q&A section), and it's NOT the dev threads.
Threads in "Android Development" should be just that; It really hurts everyone when the ROM threads get filled with "How do I flash this?" and "Where's the download for X?". It's not the dev's duty to hold the hand of everyone who doesn't know what xRecovery is. I've installed nearly every ROM for the X10, and I'm sorry, but if you can't figure out how to do it, you shouldn't be in the Android Development forum in the first place.
There are a million threads on how to root, JIT, and flash custom ROMs, yet we still see new "HOW TO SPEED UP UR EXPERIA!!!" and "I want this rom, HOW?" threads every day. It's crazy that people can't read the stickies and ask in the correct forum. The post count restriction for dev forums was a start, but I think we see far too few bans for outright disregard for devs and the forum rules.
This is all JMHO, of course, but I'm sure I'm not alone in these sentiments.

I am glad notice is being taken of the sad trend in some of the xda-developers.com forums. I would humbly like to suggest that a 'report this' tag is included on threads for members to indicate to 'mods' that a particular comment is starting a 'flame war.' Habitual 'flammers' and obnoxious behaviour can then be quickly identified and appropriate action taken against them.

This contradicts what you've said the in the first segment, we're here to learn, and you can only do that with all the language differences here when clear instructions are listed. Forums/websites all around the world, such as Android Central, Gizmodo/Engadget etc., all point readers to here for many handsets. XDA is NEWS as much as anything else.

I do understand your frustration with users both personally and professionally- they're a PITA. Unfortunately users are what programmers have to cater to- as cool as something might be as a developer- if it's unusable in a practical way, it's only instructional. If XDA's only for learning there's no need here for device specific forums or even posting roms, just post the code snippets that needed modification to get version x.y.z to work; then we can all make our own variant, after all the android SDK is free and was one of the original ways to sideload a app onto any phone. All of us devs have an Eclipse IDE, etc. only post code to compile and that will keep out the riffraff.
XDA doesn't have a Quality-Assurance group to validate posts or the qualifications of the devs or the roms they present or the instruction sheet. I'm sort of personally suspicious of just putting anything on my phone, as where better to hide something than in a rom, and Android already (as well as GSM itself) have enough security issues. Some of the install instructions have been very vague, and if you, as a dev, know the files you want everyone to try, are not xRecovery compatible or require a particular version of the FlashTool or root or whatever, say so upfront. While "I" know 435 is LATER than 453, 497 and 504, not everyone is familiar with all the x10 roms or knows to go to PTCRB to check which ones end in those numbers; therefore, post the entire firmware and baseband number and avoid that question. RTFM is a very old catchphrase that doesn't apply here since there is no manual since you're writing the manual NOW.
I personally support the locking of the dev threads with links to roms to anyone but the OP. Maybe there should be a "Enduser Firmware to Try" subforum which is readable by all, but only postable by mods/devs with firmware of a high enough quality and the ability to support end-users. I've bricked two phones before there was a way to debrick them that worked.
If devs want money or beer or free space in the cloud that's in my name, be upfront, be clear, be helpful and some percentage of the folks here will reward you just as they would pay DaVinci Wotan, Unlockitnow, et al.

No it isn't, and no it doesn't. There can be room for both (development / learning), but people don't seem to understand the boundaries of either.
I'm not here to argue, just stating my opinion.

Fair comments John.
As I discovered - the hard way - a polite question will always get one further than a rant, whine or trolling.
I also try to follow the caveat that any dev or themer can do whatever they like with their work - they owe us nothing.

Press thanks then, haven't had one for a while - I'm insecure and paranoid...
OT and serious - I see your point, but as you can probably infer from my post above, I disagree when you say we "have the right to receive an explanation".
We don't, in my opinion. An explanation is good, and furthers goodwill, but it's not something the "average user" here can demand.
The most popular themes and ROMs here are popular for a reason - updates, information, no trolling etc. The devs/themers that don't do the above - as is their right - will find less interest in their work. Whether they care or not is entirely up to them.
Ok I agree with you.
But I still think that if you are a regular user (like me) and subscribe to a thread, and suddenly, that topic desappears, you will want some explanation. I searched and only found this thread (which was not created by me).
But anyway, thank you! I've found another ROM and I'll test it.

Hello all, sorry if this is a redundant thread, however I have been searching and haven't found anything in regards to unlocking the bootloader after big red's update. If there's a thread addressing that, I'm sorry, I just haven't come across it. It's been a few months since the update, and ( not to pressure anyone here, but I've usually seen work arounds for things like that by now lol ) ) don't get me wrong, mad props to you guys who figure this stuff out and making like easier for noobs like me :good:

For all those people who complain about the 10 post rule, this thread is the reason it's there.
Nothing personal against the OP, he's not a 1 post member, this was just a good example, imagine how Many of these there would be if the first post could be made in here.
