I have the sprint TEP insurance plan. My question is this, what plan do you guys recommend? Do you recommend sprint, or a third party insurance company? I have been looking at toughcell recently, since they seem to be the cheapest.
What do you guys think? Is there a inherit advantage for paying more for the sprint TEP? I realize that it is month instead of all at once charge, but most third party insurers will allow you to transfer the plan to a new phone. free of charge.
I appreciate the feedback.

I've always just went for the Sprint TEP. Easy to get a replacement and fast...Never had a bad experience until the last time I tried to get my OG Evo fixed...And they claimed physical damage from a power port not working? Got it replaced eventually tho

Sprint tep all the way, overnight express shipping on replacement, all the want is phone returned so extra battery and memory stick and new phone $100
Sprint TEP is nearly unrivaled. I feel sorry for people who only have Asurion.

I've been having problem with my mic on my Vibrant, so i called Tmobile to see if they would do anything about sending me a replacement Vibrant, I have a 2 year protection that I am paying $7/month. They told me that Vibrant isn't available anymore, neither is SGS 4G and my ONLY 3 options of replacement would be some crappy blackberry, Defy or Cliq 2.... I told the guy those are all down grades from what I have and that I didn't want any of those and he agreed with me...
Basically I got no where, spoke to the manager that told me the same thing, then I spoke with loyalty department (been with T-mobile for like 7 years) and the best they could offer was was $20 off HTC Amaze...
Anyone else think this is ridiculous and/or have any suggestions on what I should do? I don't think it makes sense that they should downgrade me... if anything if they don't have anything as good, then give me something better.
If anyone else ran into this please let me know what you guys did to get a replacement?
I would either call them back and try to get a galaxy s2 or call samsung directly and use their warranty. The tmobile version of the s2 is called the hercules I believe and samsungs direct warranty only lasts a year
Wow that sux

That's crap...let us know how you end up.
I also had a problem with my vibrant with the incoming calls. I called Tmobile to replace my phone with another vibrant under the warranty, instead, they gave me a Htc Sensation .
what?!
Thats ****ed up. I pay the $7 a month too and the first time it was giving me trouble they just sent me a new one and i had to return my defective unit. Thats all. If it ****s up again they better not ask me to downgrade
Try replacing mic I guess

That's exactly what i said! Guy told me to call Monday bc their inventory gets updated then. So I'm going to call them then, but that is still bs, i run 4 businesses, if my customer isn't happy i upgrade them or refund them, not charge them more or downgrade them... I don't understand how that even makes sense. I'm going to try calling them on Monday, but to the those of you guys that are paying for the warranty don't bother, apparently once they run out off the phone you have they might give you a Nokia flip phone if they don't have any more budget Android phones to give out.
I called Samsung but they only have the warranty for 1 year, and you have to send your phone in for 2 Weeks while they work on it. So i guess they want you to use the payphone while you wait..

Wow OP I've also been with tmo for 7years and also paying those ****s the 7 bucks a month too. I don't have any real issues with my vibrant other then well it being a vibrant, I'll be dam if they try to downgrade me to some crap ass phone call those tards back every day tell you get what you want man that sucks. Good luck ill call them and talk **** about me paying 7 bucks to get a downgraded phone tomorrow.

I would actually not mind having a defy, I am into a lot of extreme sports and it would be nice to have a tough smartphone. It would be nice to have a phone that I could keep in my pocket while I am commuting to school on mtb trails instead of in an otterbox in my backpack.
Does anyone know if light bleeding from behind the buttons onto the screen is a warranty issue? It has been happening ever since I got this replacement phone.
The DEFY is just slightly rugged. It's not full on military spec so a case is still recommended. The DEFY is not that bad of a phone though with excellent 3G reception. The CLIQ2 has problems, and a Blackberry.. oh lord. But you do have a Samsung Vibrant - a phone that is over a year old now. What do you expect? Most of the $7.99 is for insurance anyway not the warranty.
First thing I would do is cancel that $7 joke of an insurance policy. They tried that crap on me before with my Behold II and I called corporate and they replaced it with a Vibrant. Then I went online and cancelled $28 worth of insurance (4 phones). If you think about it, total up the insurance money you pay each year and that would be enough to cover at least two GalaxyS 2's ($84x7 years).
Just called them OP. Same story, I'm getting a call back on Wednesday to update my status regarding the Vibrant being in stock. They did however offer me the glaxy S 2 for 50%...$200 for an upgrade! I'm saving that for Nexus Galaxy.
All three of these choices are downgrades. I'm definitely canceling my insurance after this.

That's what I am going for, I'll just try to get them do give me 1/2 off the price of upgrade on Amaze or SGS 2, Ill just sell it and pick up a Nexus. Either they do that or give me something that isn't a downgrade! I'll settle for Sensation.

Well be it 1 year or older this makes no difference, when I got the warranty it was in case I needed to replace my phone it was going to be covered for 2 years with something equally as good, if they would have told me they would instead give me a flip phone I would have taken my chances... Defy is a POS, it has slow CPU, smaller screen, 2GB of memory, thinker, worse battery life... I don't think there is a single benefit to this phone except that it will work if I drop it in the toilet.
the battery life is not worse, it's much better, the CPU is not far off from the Vibrant and as far as I'm concerned stock vs stock the DEFY is a better more consistent performer. I would know, I had both. The GPS worked too. If you've never had one I can't even see how you would run off at the mouth about how much of a POS it is.
The age of the phone DOES matter. The value does not INCREASE on a phone. You can't expect to get a major upgrade just because they don't have any more of your phone. Get real. You don't pay *that* much for the extended warranty, and the warranty does not guarantee anything equal or better replacements. Read the fine print.

A few things don't make sense.
I'm assuming your Vibrant is out of the 1yr manufacturers warranty, and you are reffering to the $7 a month Assurion insurance.
If you are indeed out of your 1 yr warranty then T-Mobile has no obligation to even offer you anything, not even a downgrade.
Now, if you are trying to resolve the issue by using your Asurion insurance then you shouldn't even be dealing with T-Mobile. T-mobile has no clue what Asurians current inventory is. Assurion claims are done completely seperate from T-mobile. Assurion claims can be filed at the following link:

Maybe I'm missing something or not understanding. I think the above info I provided is correct but who knows maybe I'm wrong.

The warranty is actually split in 2 parts, one is the damage/stolen warranty that you would have to go through Assurion, the other is an extended warranty that extends the warranty an additional year past the manufacturers 1 year warranty. The idea is if your phone gets screwed up with the fault that isn't yours, Tmobile will replace it.

Thanks, usefil link. I didn't know you had the option to choose PHP Insurance alone for $4.79. That sounds better than the PHP bundle especially considering T-mobile isn't doing a warranty exchange with a comparable model. What do the terms and conditions say? I would read that in detail, if they have to give you a comparable model then I would fight it.
here is what the fine print says:
3. REPLACEMENT PRODUCTS.
If the identical Covered Product is no longer available, We will replace it with
a product of comparable functionality. In all cases, We will determine product
comparability including functionality at Our sole discretion. Technological
advances and product availability may result in a replacement product with a
lower selling price than the original product.
A replacement product may be either new or refurbished, at Our option. Nonoriginal manufacturer parts may be used in refurbished products.

I want them to tell me how Defy and Galaxy S have the same technological functionality...? besides making phone calls I think these 2 are pretty different...
Yea i just dropped my insurrance.....
My screen is shattered and they offered me the same crap.....ill buy another vibrant off craigslist and then when my contract is up.....ill go to sprint and not waiste my money again on the shotty insurrance

Rooting will void Samsung's warranty. You can unroot the ROM so they will not notice in case you need service.
I ignore if you can go back to the stock kernel if you flash a new one, Samsung can just enter on CWM and that way they will know your warranty is screwed.
I have an extended warranty as well on Best Buy, and what they told me is that not matter what happens with the device, they will replace it with a new one in case you need it.
But, and this is a big BUT, we are talking about Best Buy, a screwed up company with sale associates that know next to nothing about what they sale, and you could be in a situation where you need to replace your device because you accidentally bricked it, and they will tell you that hacking is not covered under their extended warranty, even though someone else told you it does.
Weight your options. But my advice is: do it!. Root the damn thing, that way you will learn more, and if you brick it, then you could buy another one (hopefully). After all, these are cheap machines.
you'd just flash back to stock via odin and be done with it
So if i drop it and the screen cracks and its rooted with stock rom will i still be covered under bestbuy warranty or will i have to unroot

The guy in a blue Polo was either misinformed or lying. Best Buy's extended service plans on electronics like phones/media players suck horribly. Ignoring the fact that they don't cover lost/stolen devices or devices that have been immersed in water (considered how vague that exclusion is, and how hard it would be for them to tell the difference in water damage from being splashed and being dunked, I'm guess you'll have an uphill battle getting any water damage covered). If you attempt to file a claim they WILL attempt to fix it first. Which means sending it off somewhere to sit on a shelf for weeks before a tech even looks a the thing. Only if the tech decides he can't fix it will you get a replacement, which is probably refurbished. If the tech thinks he's fixed it they'll send it back. I say think because if the problem is intermittent it's quite likely the tech will simply not notice the player is still broken.
If you can still cancel the service plan, you're better off getting you're money back. Honestly, extended warranties aren't worth the money. By their very nature you HAVE to get less financial benefit out of them then they cost, period. In order for the guy selling the warranty to make a profit you have to be on the losing end of the deal. Stick some money in the back to put towards a replacement, or you're next device if all goes well. If you still feel better with some kind of coverage, you should be able to get covered by Square Trade, or other 3rd party companies.

I agree. Basically, that company sucks as a whole.
I HAD to get an extended warranty because I hard bricked my first Player, and when I try BB to "honor" their warranty, they told me I have 2 options, either send the device to Samsung and wait weeks for a new device to arrive, or they could make an exception for me if I pay $65 to get an Extended Warranty.
I payed them, they got me a new device and I still have a little less than a year of this bullcrap warranty left.
I was SO GLAD when I read BB have to close stores down across the country due to weak profits. I hope they will do much worse over time. </end rant>
I've actually had great experiences buying phones from them. I was able to get my razr for $100 less than what Verizon was selling it for. Before that I'd gotten the Droid incredible for $50 off, and a full three Weeks sooner than I would have gotten it from Verizon (Verizon was backordered a full month at that point). My gf got her Maxx for $150 from best buy, and got it 2 days later (versus atleast 2 Weeks).
That being said, their service is terrible, and I won't let the geek squad do any work for me if they were paying me their exorbitant labor rates. On the plus side, I was able to spend an hour and a half playing keyboards and guitars without a single employee acknowledging my existence. In my book that's s huge improvement from when their sales floor were on commission.

I hate to add to the Best Buy meme on an Android forum, but thought it might be helpful in an ancillary way: I have a buddy who worked for the Geek Squad for years, him having a large amount of contracting experience through family (all the while he grew up) and about as much with electronics, so he built entertainment systems, did tv mounts, and was "the solutions guy" for customers who called with special needs and projects: was paid well too. (I despise them as much as anyone for exhorbitant pricing!)
He buys his laptops there still, because of the warranties (and perhaps a good credit line): he's that big clumsy oaf who will drop something a bunch, and thus far they have honored warranties even for drops that crack screens; he also seems to have that "luck" of laptops dying...one to three months before a warranty runs out (and he really isn't the type to kill one just to get another new--close enough, in fact, that he tells me about anything shady he does, and breaking laptops on purpose to take advantage of warranties isn't among things he'll do), and despite this having happened multiple times, they have honored those warranties: usually with newer model replacement computers too.
So depending on the store and terms, sometimes it can be worth looking into Best Buy: read everything carefully and compare. If you're paranoid about bad things happening to your devices, or have reason to believe something probably will. Or you can do like me, and talk the Lenovo reps 1200+ dollars off of the normal pricing, and then push beyond their lowest deals by explaining the problems with unclear marketing and deal offers, and then convince them to throw in a few upgrades for free. : D And insure elsewhere. Maybe I'll keep this in mind, however, and get his advice for you, if the guy isn't too busy right now.
Happy purchases.

I have a Galaxy S3 with protection plan from Best Buy ($10 a month) with sprint service and I recently bricked my phone. I went to Best Buy and they was able to give me a new GS3 (refurbished) in about three days. With a $50 deposit I received a loaner phone (lower grade but still an android smartphone). My $50 was refunded at the return of the loaner phone. So I would say ROOT ROOT ROOT!!! it is so worth it! Why not experience the full features of your device? Just for the record....Best Buy's geek squad does not fix the phones on location in most cases so your phone has to be sent out. The way their company works is, as soon as your phone is in their computer system the factory sends out the refurbished phone. So in all actuality they never see your phone until your at home rooting the new one.....you are very welcome!

Rooting does not void your warranty. I rooted my phone and bricked it. i have a Metro PCS galaxy mega 6.3. I called Samsung and informed them that i bout it second hand like this and i want it back to normal. They told me it is still under warranty and they will email me shipping labels. They fixed everything for free. I complained before they sent it back that Samsung's website says my Phone should have Kit Kat. So I told them that is false advertisement and that is wrong lol. Everyone on the internet says they only have gingerbread. Metro Pcs is the red headed step child of the mobile industry so they didn’t get the over the air update. I complained about this to Samsung and they informed me that they will be upgrading my Mega with Kit Kat. Don’t believe everything you see on the internet.

I've heard of "protect your bubble" only recently. I bought my old phone from best buy and got their black tie insurance so I haven't had any experience with truly 3rd part providers but I mindlessly trust commercials I see. but in all seriousness dig around before ever pulling the trigger. A lot of 3rd part insurers are just as sketchy as they can be.
Ought to check with jayochs.
Edit: from his Signature "Just bought a new phone within 30 days? Getting ripped off with Asurion insurance through Verizon? PM me for a way to get a better insurance membership plan with all sorts of perks through ProtectCell for a cheaper price than Asurion."
Bought my Galaxy S9+ directly from Samsung last week. Case and screen protector coming tomorrow. I'd like to get insurance for the phone. I've seen a few potential places to buy it.
A few questions:
1. Is it possible my credit card offers some sort of accident protection for some period? (I need to read the ToS for the card [Southwest Premiere Visa])?
2. What are the main players for phone insurance and the important factors to consider (deductible, replacement process, hassle, etc.)?
When I had my Nexus 6P from Google, I bought the insurance, and when my screen cracked, it was super easy to get the phone replaced.
Thanks for the recommendations.

1. Yes, VISA does add an extension of the manufacturer's warranty. It will double it in the case pf this phone. For details you can read about it here: Warranty Manager Service. Just an FYI on this. I have worked in credit card fraud for over 8 years. I have never heard of anyone actually using this service. Also, its not your bank that will handle the warranty, its VISA directly. Your bank will just send you to the page I linked or the number on that page. Good luck wiht it if you need it. It does not cover damage though, so it wont be of any use if you break the phone.
2. Assurion and Square trade are the only two places that are reputable. Others here may have better suggestions.
Now, I am thinking this... You bought the top of the line android phone, a powerful pc in the palm of your hand with QHD+ display. You bought a case and a screen protector, although you did not state where from so I will assume Samsung, doesnt really matter though. My thought on this is that you should buy the Samsung Premium Care Plan. Thats just me though... I have carrier insurance and would not even take the phone out of the box until it was insured.
I couldn't find the premium care plan for the S9 from Samsung. Only the S8. I can look again. Thanks.
Just call your insurance company and add it to your home insurance; the premiums for phone specific insurance are not worth it (just get home insurance that covers your electronic devices with a low deductible).

I would consider getting a plan from squaretrade. Their plan is the most reasonable, and the claim process is super streamlined. The deductible is also considerably lower compared to others, I've filed 2 claims with them so far with no issues. (They actually gave me $$$ for my old LG V20)

I used square trade for my s8+. Unfortunately its's not as easy as assurion ( which is what the major carriers use). They wanted me to take it to batteries plus for a screen replacement, which i didnt trust, plus they had to send it out for that repair. I could have sent it to samsung if i chose, but that would be a pretty long wait.. Knew a reputable shop in town and square trade paid for them to repair it minus the deductible. Well i had to pay it and sent them the receipt and they reimbursed me. My particular plan didnt cover lost or stolen but i believe some plans do. IT was cheap in the big picture. Was $89 for a year with a $99 deductible. You can extend for $69 per additional year. Their offers and deals change. Real easy to get a long with. I like with asssurion they just over nighted you a replacement. WIth Square trade its pretty much up to you to get it fixed and they'll reimburse you. I chose the samsung plan this time. We'll see. Hope i don't need it.
