I'm writing this to try and save you guys some steps. This is a combination of things I've pieced together from several other instructions. Necessary files will be attached as best as I can, links will be provided otherwise.
This should give you 3G on verizon. I seem to get it no problem. However, I am not sure that it will be as fast as the 3G on Sprint, and it will definitely prohibit use of Sprint's LTE network, if you're one of the lucky ducks in the six cities starting up LTE soon.
if you bork your phone, I'm not responsible for that. You do this at your own risk.
things you'll need-
HTC diagnostic drivers
CDMA workshop (demo version is fine)
your MSL
a PRL to push to the device
if you're rooted, you can get your MSL by simply using MSL reader. I got mine from sprint when i was activating my phone.
you can get PRLs from this page. I chose OOOO1, because it's a verizon PRL, but your phone doesn't say roaming all the time. you need the .prl file inside of the zips, not the zips themselves.
turn on android debugging in your settings, and allow sideloading (i've read this is necessary, but i already had it on, so i cannot verify that it won't work if it's off)
Download the htc drivers folder below, and unzip to somewhere.
go into diag mode ##DIAG# on your dialer (that's ##3424#)
plug your phone into your computer (windows 7, i haven't done this on the linux side of my machine yet, so i'm not sure how it all works out there).
open up the device manager
(just start typing 'devices' in the search field, it will pop up. or type 'devices.msc' ) don't use the quotes.
you should see the phone, under 'ports' (so i've read) or modems. wherever it pops up, it should be in yellow, because we haven't installed the diagnostic driver yet!
right click on it, where ever you found it in the devices list.
choose to install/update driver. click 'browse my computer'. click 'let me pick from a list of drivers'. click 'have disk'. click 'browse'. navigate to wherever you put those htc diagnostic drivers, and select the one (64 or 32 bit) for you.
it should then be in the device list as a modem (assuming your phone is still in diagnostic mode). right click on it, select properties. figure out which port it is on (the modem tab)
open up cdma workshop. you should only have to doubleclick the executable file (cdma_workshop.exe) to open it up. this is the demo version they give away freely on their website. this is not a cracked fully functional version. but, it does what you need it to.
set the port to the one you just read out of the device manager. hit 'connect' and then 'read'.
click on the security tab. write your MSL in the field under 'SPC/user lock'. in the drop down menu there, select 'HTC method'. click the little box just to the right of your MSL field until it says 'S'. Click on the SPC button there and hit 'send'. Your phone should now be able to be accessed by CDMA workshop.
Go to the 'Other' tab in CDMA workshop. under PRL, leave it at Universal, NAM1 (I also wrote to NAM2 for some reason. I don't know enough about this to say with perfect accuracy what would be 'most appropriate'. just a warning).
click on the 'write' button. it will bring up a box for you to find and choose the PRL of your choice. hit okay. boom. written.
now, from here, i also changed the preferred radio to the 900mHz band cellular.
those instructions can be read here .
basically, that's *#*#4636#*#*, hit phone info, menu, select radio band. i also changed my preferred radio to include all the network types and switch through them automatically.
i've changed my prl, and radio type, and i'm getting 3g on verizons towers, not showing roaming (although i am roaming, it just doesn't say so because of the modified PRL)
there you go kids.
btw, i did have to reboot my computer twice to get the drivers and the phone and cdma workshop all to place nicely together.
hope that helps someone.

Yes they can, you can view the amount of roaming data used online on sprint.com
People have had their contracts terminated for roaming too much, but on the flip-side, there's people out there who have roamed constantly without a warning letter or anything from sprint. YMMV

dont do it

i got a warning call once, and they said i did over 900mb while roaming
yes, sprint knows. i don't care. honestly, if they kicked me off, it's fine with me. i move in two weeks to a part of the country that basically only covered by verizon.

Don't think Sprint charges for roaming, but I do this only because I have to. Work related.. I use the OG EVO 4G EPST.apk so I can change PRL on the fly when I need to Verizon 3G.
I'll have to double check but Sprint does throttle/limit roaming 3G to 300MB. At least that's what happened to me. Couldn't get decent Verizon 3G after I went over last month. After billing cycle I was able to get back good roaming speeds.
If you do this don't abuse it..

Will OG EVO 4G EPST.apk work for the EVO 4g lte, if it does would you mind posting a copy?
I followed the instructions you posted and it seems to be working, but I was just wondering how I will know I"m on verizon since the 0001prl file removes the notification and is there an easy way for me to control when I am on sprint or when I'm on verizon?
Thank you very much for all the help, this feature is great if I"m in a bind and need service!
Anyone know if Sprint let's you start another line after getting kicked out? Not that I plan to or anything..

without an EPST.apk that will allow you to manually choose the PRL, you have to use this convoluted method to change to verizon. switching back to sprint only requires you to go into settings>updates>update PRL. it pulls it from the network.

Download the PRL file and place it in the root of your SD card.
Hit ##775# from the dialer. Enter you MSL, and tap "update PRL" on your screen. Wait a few seconds for it to load. Search in SD card and use the second drop box to search only PRL files. Select the PRL file, press OK. When it takes you back to the screen where you previously hit the "update PRL" on your screen, be sure to hit the menu button and commit the modification.
It will say that your phone is going to reboot, but you may have to do it manually. Until you reboot the phone, the PRL will not change. Be sure to have a copy of the old PRL on your SD card so you can revert back easily, because you will not be able to go back to a Sprint PRL using the network since you'll be on Verizon's network only.
You said you know the risks, so I won't warn you of what could happen if you do this too much for too long.

Hah. Yeah, or you could get a REALLY expensive bill or if you're lucky just get the contract terminated.
If you want "faster" speeds, then overpay for it.

Significantly better on Verizon, but maybe 1-2 months ago, Sprint's 3G network by my house improved drastically and I'm sure it's just as fast or faster than big red now. However, where I work, Sprint's signal is horrible and my phone is constantly switching from roam to Sprint if I'm not on WiFi. I know I ran speed tests on both (before the improvement of the Sprint network), and I don't remember the exact results, but Verizon was 5 times faster.....at least.
I still have the 00001 PRL on my SD card. If I remember, I'll flash it and try testing both networks again tonight during off-peak hours.
still works for me, but not everyone..please delete
I am admittedly not very well versed in cellular technologies, but I know a few things. When I click on "Select radio band" it gives me a menu with the heading "Set GSM/UTMS band". With the EVO LTE being a CDMA phone, what good would it do to change a GSM setting?
nice find....almost like a roam only hack. When I choose 800 I immediately start roaming, which at work gives me much better signal.
Hmmm...I did this, and I did get much better reception but it also immediately went to roaming. When I went into settings and forced it to use the Sprint network only...all signal was lost.
Not sure I want to force roaming all the time.
Sounds like Verizon's 800 MHz signal has better coverage in your location than Sprint's signal, and you're forcing it to roam (they have reciprocal agreements).
Definitely YMMV, but hey, it should work fine. Note that Sprint has the option of terminating you if your roaming minutes go too high.

To reverse the effects, just press the multi-task button (or redo the first steps) and choose Cellular 1900. That should put you back on Sprint's spectrum.
I'm not suggesting full-time roam, but it does help if you're ever in a low signal area on Sprint..
I immediately reversed it. It's a good trick to know if you're ever in a spotty area and need to force roaming though.

as did I but now if i roam i have no signal and just the x over the bars, anyone know if there is away to reset it to switch on its own?
Don't do this! You can't get it to automatically switch between the two after you choose one.
As a part of sprints network vision they are slowly converting their iden network (push to talk) which is on the 800mhz band to a voice band which will soon result in stronger signal and better coverage for voice. So this will be a good tweak in a few months once that is fully carried out but for now it's just going to throw you on verizon if you select 800mhz

Before trying this; if you use Google Wallet, please go RESET it now, and sync all of your data because this will reset your phone back to stock.
Now try a Reverse Logistics
1. From your phone dial pad enter ##786#
2. Select Menu from the top right corner
3. Select Reset
4. Enter your MSL code (you can call sprint to get this or root your phone and use MSL Reader)
The Phone should reboot and clear all data and system. I know you can just do a factory reset but I did the same thing and for some reason the factory reset and stock RUU did not work for me I had to do the ##786# which got rid of the X, but the data would not come back on, but since I got the phone data has been spotty, but the new PRL has fixed that somewhat.. I've bricked about 3 phones since the launch date trying things I know I had no business, but my curiosity has allowed me to find fixes for a lot of problems except for the NFC bricking problem with Wallet (SO PLEASE RESET GOOGLE WALLET BEFORE DOING THIS RESET).........
Good luck and let me know it this gets rid of the No Signal problem from manually switching frequencies.

rockin my EVO 4G LTE
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to force the HTC EVO 4G LTE into a roam only mode? I tried looking in the settings and all I found was Sprint only and Automatic on the LTEvo.
I had a rooted and rom'd EVO 3D and I know it had the option for Sprint only, Automatic, and Roam only. I'm thinking the added functionality was due to the custom ROM but I just thought I'd throw this question out there to see if anyone has a workaround.
I read somewhere using *#*#info#*#* will do it. After entering menu, upper right corner takes you to settings. Phone info, and change to 800. This is only for voice I believe. Sorry that I can't link to the thread

I gave this a shot, after entering the info code into your dialer, select "Phone Info" hit the menu button on the top right and select "Select Radio Band" and it then select one of the 800-MHz Band and you will enter roaming. As shephardofthedamned stated, this is only going to change your voice to roaming.
To change back, select PCS (1900 MHz Band).
Also, if you decide to use Roam Control you will need a rooted phone.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Sorry I recently flashed back to stock and didn't realize that I didn't allow for "Domestic Data" in the roaming options! You are able to get 1x data with roaming

There's no difference in battery UNLESS you have LTE connection. LTE will drain the battery a lot faster.
OP, if you don't have LTE, just keep it on. As long as you aren't using it, you won't drain any faster.

I suppose I COULD leave the data connection to CDMA/LTE, but that kind of defeats my initial question. I think I might go for a drive and see if it's perhaps just the local tower causing me issues, or if this "bug" persists outside my home turf.

Well it's nice to know I'm not the only one with problems. As the saying goes, misery loves company.
As for now, I'm thinking I might just run run the RUU and go back to stock 1.13.651.1 (unrooted) for a while and see how things fare. I can "deal" without root access for a few weeks, and who knows, maybe by then the DEV community will have found a way to S-OFF the new 1.22.651.3 OTA update. I'm in the greater Boston market and we're due to have LTE switched on VERY soon. I'll save a Nandroid backup of my current s-off/rooted 1.22.651.3 in case I want to visit this in the future.

Well your ##72786# tricks seems to have worked for me. I can now freely switch between CDMA only and LTE/CDMA and my data connection remains constant. I love these forums...

Glad to be of help. It's a trick that us techs do when a customer does not have data or if it's being wonky

Ok so with my CDMA only & LTE/CDMA dilemma behind me, my phone is now switching the 3G on to send and receive MMS messages. This is the first time I've seen this with my EVO LTE. Previously my MMS messages were sent and received via WiFi, which was noticeably faster. DO you have any tips to help me in this scenario?

I have had the same issue and haven't been able to resolve it.
I had 3G up until last Tuesday in Minnesota and talked with Sprint. They tried to reset my phone and then tried to do the hands free activation and it failed. I flew to Dallas for vacation, turned on the phone and it activated in less than 30 seconds.
Returned back from Dallas and still no 3G in Minnesota (Minneapolis and Central MN).
I do have my MSL, but any tips on how to get 3G data back again?
I have a unrooted Evo3D. Sprint is in the middle of there network vision upgrades in my area and right now reception is so poor I can't make a simple call or txt while I am at work. Is there a setting or some app that I can force it to roaming only instead of being stuck on the Sprint tower that is down until they finish the upgrades? Hopefully something that I can do without rooting or downloading different PRLs when I want to switch back and forth.
Flash verizon PRL file will solve the problem. I don't have that file on hand now. But google you will find it.

Yes I could but it would be a pain to flash the Verizon PRL when I get to work and then flash back to the Sprint when I leave to go home.

Roam Control should do what you want. Note that there is a fix in the most recent version for an unrooted Evo 3D. It costs $4 but that might be worth it in your situation.
If you decide to root your phone, MeanROM ICS 2.6 has a "roam only" option built-in.

Works great! Just takes a minute for it to switch over.
