I just want to make sure I am going to be ok with the usb cable that I currently have. I am seriously considering rooting my phone for the first time, and as a noob I am reading all the guides which consistently state to use the factory supplied usb cable. Mine stopped functioning within a few months of getting my phone and I recently replaced it with a belkin microUSB cable for data and charging, so will that one be fine? It feels like a silly question, but I don't want to overlook anything so minor as the correct cable.
Thanks, you all are so awesome!
You should be perfectly fine. Go to droidstyles guide and download all of it and all of the programs. Follow the instructions exactly as they say and you will not regret it in the end.

I am absorbing section 4 of the guide right now. I think I am going to go with the Glitched AOKP ICS....no particular reason, but I hope I'm not being too ambitious!
Glitched AOKP is a great choice.
And if you ever need a usb cable + a wall charger $2.50 including shipping isn't bad.

Is there a way to use the USB plug from the hd2 and plug it into a USB hub which in turn you can plug in a keyboard, mouse, or other device with the correct driver. This would open up possibilities for video out, card reader transfers, and many other very useful things. It can communicate with a ps3 and a PC, why wouldn't this work?

THIS IS THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, DONT POST NEW THREADS!.
this should be posted in general, NOT development.
...and that doesnt mean make a new thread there. just wait for a mod to move this one. and DONT POST HERE AGAIN. please.
thank you....
hi i like cookies
if you used a powered hub (one that gets power from another source besides the phone) then yes it will work with many USB devices such as mice and keyboards, if you boot the phone into UBUNTU.

USB host is a reality for our HD2s but thisa post is in the wrong place, go to the correct place and im sure answers will flow,
usb host was essential during the development of a working linux build, remember the pics Dcordes posted back in may with his hd2 sat in the numerical keypad
.
I wasn't sure where to post it so I thought here but guess not. My bad for posting in here. :/
True, forgot about Ubuntu.

Can't post this in the forum it belongs, so I'm asking here; using the latest itineration (FRX 7.1), the only real problems/bugs/still being worked on; are these
1. BT constantly cycles on/off
2. USB OTG to transfer files doesn't work.
3. Can't remember the 3rd.
Are there work-arounds for these, or are they still being ironed out.
If this wasn't the right place to ask, please direct me to the right place.

Your best bet is to try and build your post count with constructive stuff, like helping other people in general and Q&A sections, and then when you've got enough and understand not to start non-development threads in the dev forum, ask the question in the ROM thread. XDA likes contributors

I realize that but as I'm new to Android (Unix programmer from the 70's though) I do not use the phone with Droid as the BT earpiece is too important. With that in mind, I've little to offer.
Sounds like you're stuck with RTFM for now...
1. There is a thread for the BT, I don't recall the specifics but it's something about audio threading/routing I think?
2. Not sure on that one...
3. No help for Oldtimer's disease.
Keep in mind all of the efforts you see here are done by volunteers, there are no hard and fast release dates or etas for any of it. If you want to know when something will really be finished then you're going to need to brush the cobwebs off those programming skills and kick in some keyboard time. Based on what I've seen these guys are more than willing to help you get up to speed on that but I'd guess most of that is identifying who you need to PM to get the answer you need on specific questions.
You might also want to pick up a spare phone from craigslist and use it as a tester. You can get one for $100 or less if you're patient. I've found that to be the best way for me to learn what's really happening, then if you screw it up you're not scrambling around looking for a replacement while your wife's trying to get ahold of you.
They have threads in the dev section. BT routing is in a testing kernel. as for the PC connection google Droid Explorer. it will allow you to connect to it through adb instead of clicking usb mass storage.
I too am in the same boat as you. I've been using the FXR07 for a while and the BT was working fine (even for audio routing) and then all of a sudden it stopped working. First it quit detecting my device and I had to manually re-pair it each time, then it started doing the auto toggle on.off that you're talking about. So I tried updating to the FRX07.1 build and had the same issue. I also tried the GBX0A (Gingerbread) build and had the same issue. Though when I tried the GB build, I did carry over my data.img and my rootfs. I'm going to play with this some more and see if I can't get to the bottom of it, but I too am too new to be allowed to participate in the dev thread where this conversation really belongs.
I'll keep you posted if I find anything useful...please update us if you do also.
Don't use the same data.img when switching between builds. Use titanium back up to back up and restore data when switching between froyo and gingerbread.

Well, I went with the overkill approach and reformatted my SD card then put a clean copy of FRX07.1 on it. The bluetooth stopped cycling and half works. I can hear my audiobook playback and phone calls, but they can't hear me on a call. Also, I had to manually un-pair and re-pair the device this morning after having tested it yesterday. Not sure what help that gives...if any...
Hello everybody.
Simillar situation with my TP2. Can speak thru headset, but cannot listening to the music.
Succesfully instaled adb and connect, found in logs that I've no device /dev/htc-acoustic
adb shell ls -h /dev
or
adb shell ls /dev
But why before each device is 1;35m...
I will keep on working on it, my similar post is her (cannot post as link, grrrrrrrrr!!)

hey guys,
i recently bought a commtiva N700 off ebay from a guy that said his son had entered the pin too many times and now the screen wont turn on.
thinking i may be able to grab a quick bargain i bought it for £30,,
i got it this morn and the device certainly seems to be bricked. when i press any and all combinations of buttons, nothing happens, when i plug it in to the USB cable, the led goes solid red and then flashes red at me..
have i just bought an expensive paper weight or is there anyway of reviving the tablet from death??
thanks!!
So this is def a brick now then? What does the flashing red led mean? Any ideas?

Hmmm, this topic really doesn't belong here - more of a general question ... perhaps a MOD want to move/merge or close this thread as I just pointed another poster in the "general" direction on where to start troubleshooting - might have to use the flash the factory ROM again with their provided utility to stock condition, without root - assuming it's NOT a hardware issue & not covered by factory warranty (or expired already)
For newbies not familiar with Android OS and various how-to's, it's dangerous to try DIY fixes as it will truely turn a "soft" brick into a dead paper-weight brick that's unrecoverable.
My suggestion for where to start is linked here - please post your followup questions & findings in the other thread, it's easier for me to read - for everyone to share AND learn, and other newbies to search for possible solutions as they discover this sub-forum, thanks in advance -

This is specific to the Vpad 7 only or its generic/off-brand equivalent, not other similar Viewsonic devices that I do NOT own nor familiar with.
Many thanks for your help.. i wasn't sure if the general area was the place to use or not.. in general I find the Dev area has more knowledgable and savvy users, although i can understand why they'd get annoyed with Plebs like me trying to answers to inane questions..
i'll follow up with your advice and if a friendly mod could either move or kill this thread it would be greatly appreciated..

Sirgeekalot, I posted a few thoughts on what you folks might want to try next in the other post in this section - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359605
It take time to digest all these info & to try it out, but do let us know what you come up with, if any - so that the rest of us can point out the directions on what possibly steps to take next. Good luck & please try to post in the "other" post next as it will be far easier for everyone - it's a rather small circle of users around the world, compared to iPads and Samsung Galaxy's, etc. so the more we share together, the more we learn ... Thanks & believe me, I understand & share in your frustration in having an expensive "brick" in hand.
Hey there.
Because I'm not allowed to post in the development part of this forum, I'm just gonna do here.
I am currently trying to build a robot based on the Arduino ADK revision 3. It's working for now, but I wanted to expand it by using the Android Open Accessory Protocol to access the smartphones Wifi and sensor capabilities. The problem I encountered is that the S3 doesn't communicate with my Arduino at all. The Arduino is waiting for a connection even when the smartphone is attached.
It isn't a problem with the Arduino. Other programs to parse usb descriptors are working fine.
Have you any idea what I am doing wrong? Or is it just that the S3 doesn't support accessory development?
If you need any code of my programs just ask.
Thanks

i dont think the power is a problem since the s3 starts recharging when connected. but thanks.
i will also post this on another forum thanks for your help
What i am sayimg is to mount the adrino correctly the motherboard of the s3 needs that extra power just like with usb sticks. But i think it would be worth a shot. They are pretty cheap. Well in my area i can get one for about $15.

thanks for your help. in the meantime i found the problem. i activated wifi debugging a while ago and apparently the accessory mode somehow is based on the adb. so i deactivated the accessory mode for usb too. but now its working just fine.
Has anyone recently converted an spare android device to a stand alone music player? and when i say this i dont mean just reflash the OS and go aeroplane mode, im wanting basically the music player only like an IPOD touch or old school MP3 player from back in the day.
i have a couple of oneplus ones that i think would be great for this, but not sure if anyone has/have tried and sucessfully done this.
I bought an old sharp 40 year ghettoblaster so wondering if i could incorporate something like this into the existing tape deck, (or even my smaller sharp phone) and it would be powered off a 12v power supply that would need to be stepped down to 5v, i dont need the rest of the functionality either, just a basic player.
Poweramp plus a device that supports large expandable storage and 24+ bit digital output.

i use poweramp on my devices, love it, but was thinking something light weight as an OS would be cool, as it one without the phone functionality

I wouldn't go too nuts or you'll end up with broken stuff that will suck up time.
Just try using the stock firmware and maybe use adb edits to disable any battery hogs if needed. Dependencies... edit with care.
Simply disabling Google play Services in settings will be enough to keep some of the other Google crapware from running in the background.
Whatever you do, it's a cool project
