Hey,
i know that there is a thread about 3G-Modems in general forum but I think it's better to post a new thread here, that some of developers take a look on this. There is an App called "UMTS Manager" which allows Asus EeePad Transformer Prime-Users to use 3G Modems. This app would work with out tablet, too, if our Tablet would create ttyUSB-device after attaching 3G Modem. But Sony Tablet S doesn't do that. I think this is caused of a kernel problem. Maybe Sony modified the kernel to block this or anything else. But if one of the developers create a Custom Rom with modified kernel, which is able to create ttyUSB-devices, we could use 3G Modems.
I hope some of the developers could find a solution for us.
Best regards,
djlars

I agree. I use 3's MiFi. Stable connection and as you said, mutiple devices.
Could just be me but wouldn't a modified Custom ROM with a modded kernel require an unlocked bootloader to install? My experience with Samsung devices was that full kernel mods needed an unlocked bootloader, and this would definitely be a full kernel change, unless someone was a bloody wizard with kernel modules.
We need usb-serial Kernel module for ICS. With this it should work

I think its cuz the drivers are proprietery but I know for sure its cuz Samsung jumbles up the source code so it makes it harder to combine the cm7 code with the Samsung code

I've wondered the same thing.. perhaps has something to do with the framework? Still no 'official' leak of the Gingerbread source for the Samsung Fascinate.. maybe someone can fill us in?
It has nothing to do with the bootloader. All an unlocked bootloader does is allows you to install custom ROMs and kernels without having to use elaborate workarounds like they use for the Droid X (and even then, there's no way to install custom kernels). The problem, as stated before, is with the proprietary code Samsung uses for its device drivers.
Incidentally, all questions belong in the Q&A section, even those having to do with development. The Development section is for posting ROMs, kernels, and mods, along with the occasional step-by-step guide.

Well, considering that cm7 is gingerbread and that means .35 kernels (GB kernels). And our current functioning cm7's are using hacked. 32 kernels (froyo kernels), I'm amazed any of it functions. Jt and kaos have done an amazing job combining something that wasn't supposed to be together.

As others have said, it's Samsung's proprietary code and stuff. But I have a question for you? Is that the case with the Galaxy S2 as well? I know they didn't use their proprietary RFS file system, is it the same with everything else?

If you jump on over to the Galaxy S II Android Development forum and scroll down far enough, you'll find a thread for an AOSP ROM. In the OP you'll find a very familiar list of things that don't work. That tells me that Samsung has still not repented of its wayward ways and is still using proprietary code for its device drivers.

All OEM manufacturers use proprietary code, even HTC does. What really matters is how much did they change from the stock AOSP code, and how easy is it to reverse engineer the stuff that they did change that is needed. Samsung made a lot of stupid changes in our AOSP code that are unique to the Fascinate (like padding data) which makes trying to get AOSP working that much harder.
I am looking for recommendations on the best root & unlock method for my prime and the best Custom ROM to use. I need a stable browser, a system that doesnt randomly reboot, and good wifi & bluetooth signal. I dont game alot mostly just web browsing and pdf editing
I am currently running everything fully stock on the .28 update and it sucks for me. Please let me know what methods and ROMs you suggest

I definitely recommend Mr Wookie's Rom first. It has a lot of options available on installation that will allow you to dial it in perfectly for your needs. I'll help you if you have any questions or issues.
After you unlock your prime, use Sparkys root tool, I'll find a link and add it once I post this. If Mr Wookie's rom doesn't fit the bill you may try virtuous. I'm not recommending this rom strictly because I contribute to the team, but because I use my prime for PDF editing and it's been very stable overall as well. I run a structural steel company and also do a lot of industrial fabrication and I have a separate crane and equipment rental company. So I edit and markup a lot of blueprints and shop drawings and also deal with a lot of PDF forms for my rental company. AndroWook also has a very good and very active userbase. Mr Wookie the developer is VERY accommodating and always improving performance of his rom based on feedback and my buddy Lost Sorrow is great at answering questions and one of us it usually always around.

I also suggest it, Androwook, as I have never had any outside issues with the Rom. I installed from original and have been using it to current. Plus development hasn't stopped for this unlike other Roms. The team is quiet knowledgeable should you run into any issues. I am running the motley stable and have it pepped up with habanero clock script and have had no issues. My only suggestion is take some time to consider your clock script for your battery needs. I use mine for work purpose daily as well. Hope this helps.

For what you are looking for I would also recommend androwook. But for rom custimization I would recommend aokp. It is fast smooth and absolutely no bloat ware at all. In fact you may want to check it out either way. Look HERE

I remember when i had a moto. razr, the bootloader was locked (unless you had a developer edition, or you were simply lucky). When flashing roms, we would use safestrap (by Hashcode), roms would have minor bugs. Safestrap is based off of TWRP recovery, which is for un-locked and locked bootloaders. Hashcode has ported it to other phones, such as the galaxy s4, note 3, various kindles.
Anyway is there any possibility of porting or creating a recovery similar to safestrap.

Thanks for viewing.
Edit: I was looking at his post and he stated that he makes "kexec roms", which are roms meant for locked bootloaders.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kexec
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kexec
http://androidforums.com/razr-razr-maxx-all-things-root/712412-understanding-kexec.html
Edit: I was searching up "roms on locked bootloader" and I found other phones such as, the S4 and Xperia Z, that have locked bootloders, as i mentioned previously, the S4 uses safestrap to install roms, while the Xperia Z uses a recovery heavily based of of TWRP.
We can also consider porting twrp to the L9.
Sounds like a fantastic idea!
So this could just be ported over to our phones right?

Hopefully. But the only thing is I was reading his blog, and he says that he doesn't have time for developing on a broad range of devices, and he had to cease development for a couple. I read his posts, and what other users have said of him, and he seems to always collaborate with other devs. Even for one of the kindles, he didn't have a device, yet he still made significant contributions. I'm not familiar with how devs work together and stuff, or make things, but based of of my knowledge, if a source code is released you can work off of that. I really think, this is possible, but will take allot of work. It may be easy to port the recovery, but after that someone needs to a make kexec rom (wich can be used for other roms) that works with safestrap, maybe a dev can create the kexec and he will help make it compatible with safestrap. (im pretty sure those are the basics, but I know I'm way off i know). It seems so possible, but it will take allot of work.
Off topic: someone needs to tell me how to make roms and contribute, what language to learn, should i use the internet a book, pdf (if so from where), how long it will take, how hard it is, and tips while learning. I have allot of time on my hands and I'm willing to take on new challenges.

I've read on XDA University today.
Hello all,
This may be a stupid question but I'm not very clear on it. I have an HTC Inspire 4G rooted and with a custom ROM and its android version is 2.3.5. I recently bought another phone that comes with android 4.2. I'm wondering if I can install a 4.x android version based ROM on the HTC Inspire since they have same level processors and the Inspire has even more ram. So far I've seen smartphones as small computers; but in the clockworldmod site there is no ROM above android 2.3.5 to download. Besides the drivers that come with those ROMs is there something else stopping this device to support newer ROMs?

sorry, I meant for HTC Inspire.
it takes too much to answer specifically, but here's the simple answer:
the answer is no, you can't.
the OS is different, and even the phone, too.

thank you!
so the short answer is NO...can somebody tell me the long answer if possible?
Long answer is simple. You flash a rom built for another board and you will most likely be using your phone as a paper weight! Each device had its own motherboard if you will. Each with its own framework designed specifically for that board. You flashing a rom built for a different board is like mixing oil and vinegar

Hi,
I'm working on a small project and am currently looking for a Tablet that I can use. As far as I understood, the "Sony Xperia Tablet Z2" (SGP 521) could be a good candidate for my project. I am asking this forum to potentially assist me with your knowledge and experience if the following is possible with the device:
(Some questions or comments seem to be obvious but I still write them down so that I can be sure we are talking on the same level. Please do not simply refer me to the search functionality of the forum, I did my homework and searched each of the topics before -- I just need a first-person-confirmation of someone if the below is really working.)
- I need to modify and compile the Linux (Android) Kernel of the device. Thus, the Source-Code of the Kernel for this device needs to freely available.
- The modified Kernel needs to be able to be uploaded and booting from the device, thus the Bootloader needs to be unlocked.
- The device needs to have running NFC and LTE communication, plus touch and usual tablet capabilities. For this, the necessary binary-drivers need to be able to be integrated to the custom kernel. I expect the drivers are not common (GPL-like) drivers but proprietary and at maximum available as binary-package to be integrated afterwards.
Is this all possible or can I expect major problems somewhere? The used LTE network most likely will be some LTE network in Germany. To my best knowledge, it is possible to unlook the bootloader and compile a custom kernel. Critical point is: Is NFC+LTE working and available as binary package to be integrated in the custom-kernel?
Thank you in advance for your time!
Best regards
Dennis
Perhaps you could first tell us (approximately) what you plan to do on the tablet.
That could probably save you quite an amount of superfluous time and work if your plan doesn't make any sense.

Sure. Since I did not write much about my past experience, you simply can be sure that similar projects finished successful already. I've done similar things with Nexus and previous Google/Android developer devices, without much problems.
Back to your question:
The idea is to develop an application to be put on a nfc-capable external device to provide some external computed value. Afterwards, the tablet needs to communicate to the application on the external device, using a protocol I design that in the end uses common NFC communication and protocols. Finally, the Tablet sends results of the external-nfc-cabable device through LTE to the Internet, thus the LTE interface is only used to provide Internet functionality.
Does this answer cover your question properly?
Best Regards
Dennis
Really nobody uses a Sony Xperia Tablet Z2?
/push
I am really wondering nobody is using the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 (SGP521) with LTE and once installed a custom Kernel (maybe Cyanogen Mod?) and afterwards used anything with NFC + Internet. Simply can't believe that.
If there is anyone, please confirm that NFC + Internet (using LTE) is working with a custom compiled kernel.
Best regards
Dennis
