Why do you have to unroot to get an upgrade?

I think he meant, you don't give them your old phone when upgrading.

I believe there is an unroot.zip floating around somewhere. I stumbled across it a while back, but never used it. You can also flash a complete stock RUU and go back to factory as well.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Thy don't take your old phone when you upgrade so you won't need to unroot. Unless you are sending the phone in as an exchange toward the new phone. In which case, you will need to unrest and lock the boot loader.

Hey everyone!
So my rezound has a cracked screen, and I need to take it to verizon. Heres where my problem is.
I used the htc dev tools to unlock the phone and the zerg root rush method to root. I DID NOT install a custom rom. After the screen cracked, i followed nghtmr3's thread on how to UNROOT the rezound. I successfully got it to S-On, but when i attempted to install the stock rom, I could not do it. I tried to install the OTA update, but it came to the common downloading screen, but then an error pops up, and it wont complete the update.
So I tried to flash rom manager, reboot, and run recovery, but i go back to the same download and error screen.
I really just need to get superuser off so i can take it in without worries.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it, because i have been going at it for days now.
Thanks,
James
p.s. The attached picture is the updating screen. I come to this screen, but about 1/4 the way in, it comes up with a red "!" and sits there untill i battery pull.
p.s.s. I understand that i have already voided the in-house verizon warranty by having a cracked screen. And i do have the asurion insurance, but i dont want to send it to them with SU still installed, as i have heard that they will send it back.
Smash it up more and take it in.... But u will need insurance

Did you relock the bootloader and then run the newest RUU?

Well if you have a cracked screen youve already voided your warranty. So you might as well just call asurion and tell them you have a cracked screen.

Maybe a Mod could move it? Or at least we can solve your problem and then lock it

I've return rooted phones to asurion. It really doesn't matter, you screen is broken its not like its a warranty issue its an insurance issue. If your that worried just tell asurion you lost the phone and pay your deductible if your so worried about sending it in.

Really? i figured that they would do a thorough check to make sure it wasnt rooted so they dont have to pay for a new one. But your right, if worse comes to worst then i will just say we lost it. Thanks

Rooting your phone does not automatically void the warranty. It MAY void the warranty. A cracked screen shouldn't be a problem.

Hello all... Ive been searching and searching but can't remember where I read it but anyway..I'm a noob to sprint cdma phones and am ready to tackle downgrading my boot and flash my evo but I thought I read somewhere that I first need my msl ... I tryed calling sprint today for it , giving the cust. Rep. A story of me needing to reset my phone but she wouldn't give it to me and told me how to go into my boot loader and do a factory reset and I wouldn't need it... For ****s and giggles I did it and it all went through without asking for the msl... Now I'm confused.. Is the msl required after flashing to re activate the phone... This is all new to me I've always had a GSM phone and flashing never required a password or code.. Thanks in advance any help is greatly appreciated....
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
I did not need my MSL when I downgraded Hboot from 1.5 to 1.4. In fact, with all the ROMs I've flashed over the last month, I've never been asked for it and do not know what mine even is.
Thanks for the quick reply... That was the only thing stopping me from doing anything.... I've been trying to find where I read that it was the first step before doing any rooting, flashing, etc. I could swear it was a tutorial but hey I could be wrong.... Thanks again....

A easy way to get it is msl reader I think that's what you call it on the market . Works great to snag your msl. Incase you ever need it.

Thanks , I'll finally be able to flash tonight.. I just came over to sprint from Tmo in March and this being a cdma phone I wanted to make sure I was doing things the right way and have been reading the different procedures everyone suggests... The last phone I flashed was the G2X months ago... Just want to say the atmosphere here is great compared to the G2X section.. It turned into a flaming forum over there .. A lot of Devs left because of it... Too many people being demanding.... Thanks again

I really need to be brought up to speed on HTC development. I'm coming from a Motorola Droid x2 and I thought development would be the same but its totally different. I don't even know what the hell s-on or s-off means. I'm going to be receiving 2 new rezounds for my wife and I and I'm going to need to get them rooted, updated to ics, and new roms flashed on them. My Droids bootloader was locked down so our devs just worked around the kernel. Anyone know of any tutorials or anything that can help me out and bring me up to speed on the lingo and what (if anything) I should not do with these phones? Also, looks like they are being shipped to me running 2.3.4 which needs to go! Thanks!

Story, one more question from the FNG, is there really that much of a benefit to wait for the official ics to be released? I'm getting the new phones today or tomorrow and I'm somewhat impatient. I can't stand bloatware. Sorry if I'm asking obvious questions but I know once I root and install ics firmware I can't go back if there is a release. Thanks.

You can go back if you're S-OFF with a RUU.
For the time being, you can flash a few different ICS leaks which are close to the official OTA but that's the beauty of modding our phones, you can even stay on Gingerbread and flash ICS ROMs and run fine with a patch as well.
Having problems with s-off. Using controlbear but everytime I attempt to begin program it says connect device and install drivers. Thi is very frustrating. Would like to actually get to the wire trick

Sure you have installed the HTC Sync drivers, and gone through the whole HTC Dev Unlock process properly? And make sure the option for USB debugging is on in the ROMs settings, plus Fast Boot is off. Check basic cabling and whatnot first too of course. Try a clean run on another PC if all else fails.
Thanks for the help!

Okay, so, I pretty much have everything set up perfect except does anyone know how to change boot animation? Running clean rom dev edition and when I use rom toolbox to change and install new animation then reboot, it just shows the regular clean rom boot animation so the change isn't sticking obviously. Thanks

Honestly surprised its not done now, when GB was released it was like 2 hours and we had a rooted version. That was back when we had like 12 devs tho, now we have 2-3.

To my knowledge, we only have one dev who is sorting out the new OTA.
Allow me to quote his exact words here...
"It's not just an RUU or a simple zip file that can be restructured, rooted and posted.
It has over 200+ patch files that have to be dealt with as well, all of which are encrypted.
Including the build.prop"
So with that being said, it will take a little bit. I know he's working as fast as he can.

Also GB was released as an ruu and this update is a set of encrypted patches. Big difference in the process necessary to make it usable.

It can be rooted but only with the moonshine s-off which isn't out yet. From what I've read moonshine will s-off and root your device all in one shot and once that's done you can flash until your eyes bleed.
It's coming soon and that's all we're going to know until it's released so just sit back and browse the ROMs and kernels until it's here.
Edit: you also have the option of sending your phone in to get jtagged which will unlock your phone so you can flash stuff if you really can't wait. Think that's about $50.
