Today every time I reboot, Google Wallet is asking for root permissions. I haven't allowed it. Does this happen to anybody else? Seems a little odd to me......
Same has been happening to me.
Curious for an answer, as well.

It does that to tell if you have root. It's so it can put the unsupported device flag at the top. It also checks /system/app/ for a Superuser.apk to tell also.
If ANYTHING asks you for root that doesn't need it/that you didn't want it to have/you didn't request, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS deny permissions.
Wallet will function fine without root.
So what is the outcome here? I just rooted using the method that zedomax posted, and got the "unsupported device" notification. I denied superuser privileges to Wallet when it asked, but what exactly is happening when it says "unsupported device"?

Nothing. It has just detected that you're rooted. If you tap on "More info" on the unsupported device banner, it tells you more info about it. Even if you deny su perms, it still knows if you have su. It's only asking to check if su exists.
do NOT give wallet root! you'll get unsupported device, then if you flash another rom or unlock/lock it or unroot or any other changes after you give it superuser/root permissions, you will brick your NFC chip with secure element error! the only reliable fix for that so far is sprint is replacing your phone with another.
heed that wise man's advice! NEVER give superuser to anything that doesn't require it!! especially most especially WALLET
----
it says "unsupported device"because wallet isn't supported on rooted devices, that's why it checks for root. this is on purpose because google or sprint won't warranty or troubleshoot or insure or give you support or help or even a sympathetic ear about wallet on unsupported devices because you are dealing with MONEY and FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS. if your
phone is hacked, stolen, or lost, and you loose money from someone spending your stuff, your only protection is whatever the credit card company will give you if you can convince them. THAT'S why it checks for rooted devices. just so you all know

Even if you deny su, it still will show unsupported and know that you're rooted. By the su prompt coming up, the app knows you're rooted.

Please don't post misleading info...allowing or denying root privileges to google wallet has nothing to do with bricking the secure element of the NFC chip.
only after you do something else rom/root wise. without clearing data and saved info and settings.
So for some one like me who rooted allowed it to have permission, thinking that unsupported device was bad cleared my cache and then unrooted thinking this would fix this issue. Apparently not, so who has a fix or a thought of one?

I'm sure everyone knows that you should always wipe everything before installing a new rom... If they don't then they deserve what happens to them..
I however am having an issue with the "initializing your device"... Its been sitting here for an extremely long time, and is annoying. -- Any ideas anyone? I've done research and some people have said its down and some have said its up, etc... So if anyone has a for sure answer that would be much appreciated.

The for sure answer is that google wallet is currently not working correctly on our device. Google is aware and is working on the issue.
good to hear. Cuz last night I finally rooted and unlocked bootloader. I did clear settings in wallet first. But now it just sits on initializing and won't continue.

I'm not trying to be mean, but you are so wrong that you should Not be giving advice. NFC chip breaks ONLY if you DO NOT reset Google wallet BEFORE you flash OR even do a plain factory reset on an UNROOTED LTE.
Read the sticky in the "general thread". It explains all about the Google wallet and the NFC chip.

If you root your nexus via the "official" way, you're screwed if you have a hardware failure, because the warranty is null and void. We need to figure out a way to root that is similar to how we rooted the MyTouch and G1.
My suspicion is that the "official" unlock isn't in the spl. I think it is more like a sim unlock.
I think we should just leave it alone and learn how to root the G1 way. That way, if we have a hardware problem, we can revert the dang phone to factory specs.
Any ideas? I think a gold card may be a could place to start.

Given that Swetland has said the HTC should honour the hardware warranty if the flaw isn't causable by rooting, and even suggested that you message him if you get such things refused I think that most of us are pretty happy with that, certainly many of the main devs are.
Not that I'm suggesting you shouldn't do what you want to, just pointing out that you're unlikely to get the support that the G1 root had

It's been stated the HTC should honor the Hardware warranty.
If you are rooting, for any reason whatsoever, you are voiding your software warranty. And that's correct - you are well off the reservation and you should only root if you are aware of the risks and know what you are doing.
There is absolutely no reason you should expect to have your software warranty honored after you root.
While I can understand the desire for a sneaky backdoor root, it's really not to our advantage for such a thing to exist. Google managed to shipped this phone roootable out of the box. That is simply wonderful for the various people producing ROMs, it makes the phone a blast for hackers, it will spurn some serious innovation (and has done so already.) All good.
If people start backdoor rooting and making warranty claims, all of that may be spoiled and we may end up with a Nexus Two that is simply completely locked down.
Not good.

I completely agree with you. Look at the Droid Eris, for as long as it has been out, they are just starting to get an exploit that is working. They do not even have root yet.
I personally think that the people that most want to root without an unlocked bootloader are the people that will mess their phone by not understanding what they are doing to it fully. As stated above, you should be able to get your phone fixed if you have obvious defects that are not related to software.
While I think it would be interesting to have an alternative method to rooting, at the same time, I would view it as detrimental to what is trying to be done with this phone.
Just my small $0.01 (its not a full rant, trust me)

at first i thought it just a software, in any platform if you do anything to the software it will be ok, and the warranty still available like iphone or WM devices.
we need do small hacking to make this work, i don't know why xda-developer doesn't have any hacker, it should be easy.

if you are afraid to wipe then you shouldnt root your phone. i garranty that you WILL be wiping your phone many times in the future. i must have wiped my g1 more than 30 times and the nexus one 6 or 7 times already. but dont worry, there are always free backup apps like titanium backup
The Nexus is not like the G1 or mytouch in any way to root the Nexus is Different than any Htc Phone. The Porcessor is not the mt3g or g1. so to try to root it like the mytouch or g1 may bring more problems. Note No mather how you root it the warranty is still void unless you unroot it to send it back in.

We should have a way to "unroot."
I can see the other side to this too. If some yahoo roots their phone, then overclocks it to 2ghz or something and fries it... that SHOULDN'T be covered by warranty.
On the other hand, if I'm running one of cyanogen's roms and the speaker goes out, it should be covered.
Personally, if I fried a ROM because I overclocked it or something like that, I would NEVER send it in for warranty work. I would only send it in if the problem was clearly the manufacturer's.
Just my 2 cents

To be very clear, this behavior (data wipe on unlock) is intentional. Otherwise if your phone is lost or stolen, it would be trivial for somebody to unlock it, boot a custom kernel, and copy your contacts, email, etc from internal flash.
The Market should restore your installed apps automatically, and Settings Backup should be able to restore the bulk of your settings.

i thought i read somewhere that if we rooted there could be a chance it would affect the lte when it rolls out. any credence to this?
im tip toeing on rooting or not for the obvious reasons.
dunno if i should or not, development is still kinda early.
im also aware of the nfc google wallet reset before hand. little things like that scare me if i root and months down the road find out some features have been trashed because of it. thanks for any clarification.
bamp. lol 232 views? dis real life?
I haven't heard anything about it messing up LTE. I did root my phone the moment I got home, but I have yet to unlock it.
I haven't even ran Wallet yet either, so I'm not worried about that (although I do know that if I do use it that you have to wipe data from the app before flashing new ROMs). Wallet did ask me for root and I give it the big F-U and noticed that when I reboot my phone I'll see a message on my phone saying it was denied root access (again, I haven't even opened the app yet so I'm not worried about it bricking the chip)
In attempting to edit my Build.prop with root explorer to fix my Google Wallet issue, I must have screwed something up. When I try to re-boot the phone, it wont boot up.
My best guess is, when attempting to revert back to Build.prop.bk (or whatever the back up file was named), I deleted the .bk but didn't save it, and now have TWO DIFFERENT Build.prop.bk files, and no Build.prop.
I can boot into the screen that shows "Fastboot", "Recovery" (though I haven't installed any recovery and have not unlocked the bootloader), "Factory Reset", etc.
Is there any way to get to the Build.prop file using my windows computer or even using the phone, and check to see it's named correctly? I'd really like to not have to reset the phone.
Oh, I don't know if this is relevant, but I am rooted and the screen shows ***Tampered*** and ***Locked***.
Well, no answers so far.
I have since tried clearing storage AND restoring back to factory settings, but it still will not boot! Also, it is extremely difficult to get to the Hboot screen. Holding down power and vol down only works one out of maybe 6 or 8 times. I don't know why.
Run Ruu but that could risk a bricked google wallet chip/secure element

Well, I need to read about how to do that.
When you say that could risk a "bricked Google Wallet chip", do you mean it could screw up ONLY google wallet, or it could screw up my NFC chip altogether???
Also, any link on where to get and run RUU? That is the stock ROM, no? If my phone won't do a factory reset, I assume I have to download the stock ROM?
I also found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27248539
However, my Hboot screen also shows S-On, even though I had rooted. I may have left SuperSU with superuser off when this happened. Will that affect my ability to fix this?
Thanks.
im not 100% but i believe running ruu will unroot you and factory reset.also it will jst brick the secure element not other nfc capabilities.did you reset wallet before you messed up the build prop or was it still setup?
EDIT:here i the link for the ruu.also please don't follow that guide if you are not htc dev unlocked because it is impossible to flash a recovery unless your htc dev unlocked/unlocked bootloader
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Jewel
I had just got Google wallet working! The instructions I was following said, after you get it working, temp unroot and reboot the phone. Thats where I got stuck!
So no, I did not have the chance to re-set Google Wallet.
Thanks for the link. So is that the stock ROM? Will I have to update my PRL? Do I download the newest (higher version number)?
well you could possibly brick the secure element.if it bricks the secure element just unroot and take it back to sprint.yes download 1.13.xxx
no need to update prl
Well, I'm having no luck fixing this.
I am trying to use ADB and Fastboot on my Win 7 PC to flash the RUU to my phone. I don't really know if I'm doing it correctly though.
Edit: Well, I feel pretty stupid. I finally realized that an exe file needs to be run from the computer. I guess I'm just soooo frustrated I can't think.
So I ran it and it force closed. Let me try that again.
just click the ruu and follow the steps no need to use adb
Thank you, par05is!!!
That seems to have done it. You were the only one to reply, and I am grateful.
I just don't know how I f'd this up to begin with. Now I have to re-ad everything and re-root. But no Google wallet fixes for me.
If they want me to use it, they can fix it!!
No problem if you need help with the wallet I can help.they put unnecessary steps
Yes, that would be great.
But I'm more than a little worried, trying to do that is what got me into this mess in the first place! I successfully edited the build.prop file a couple of days ago to get file associations back, but I must have f'd up editing it again today.

Yes, after the update I still get the "GW is not certified in your country or on your device/carrier.
I've tried un-installing the update, clearing the data, re-installing the update, but still get the message.
So mtg981, does the build.prop edit fix this? Or are you saying to forget Wallet right now till Google fixes it or someone comes up with a new fix?
some people are editing the build.prop file by using the model number of a nexus phone, in think it was. That id probably what you were trying? As much trouble as it has been, I'm forgetting about it. I heard Sprint was wallet's last carrier to support it, and now Sprint might be starting their own payment form.

Apple is trying to use iTunes for people to pay for everything. That is why there is the big race for carriers to develop their own "reliable" payment forms-like apple and iTunes. Apple could try and patent that some how, if they reach that point of letting people buy anything with their iPhone, through iTunes.
And that would suck! Another apple patent!

Okay so I was browsing my phone and happened to run across the System state saying "Modified"
The issue I am having is I have never even downloaded a rooting app. The only thing close to root I have used is called Helium, which does not require root, but it can backup/restore apps+data.
I am slightly worried that if I have to send my phone in for some reason they will see this and say I have messed with the system, although I have not in the first place.
Has anyone else encountered this random issue? Other than that this phone is quite a good phone and I'm pleased with it greatly.

Sorry for late reply, at work so hard to get on atm.
I have not touched a single rooting app to this phone since I bought it new the day they came out. I have thought about rooting it, but I am touchy when it comes to phones that are in warrenty.
Although I might just say heck with it and actually root it anyways since it's saying modified, my main concern was why it was already saying it was modified when I hadn't touched it yet. I have experience rooting/restoring phones/tablets ever since the mesmerize/desire/fascinate ages so it shouldn't be too hard
I doubt this has anything to do with it, but when it turns on from a restart/shutdown one of the verizon apps "vzrwsservice" or something like that says it has crashed and then goes away until i restart again.
Thanks for you replies though, if someone does come up with a phone that isn't rooted but says modified, I'd be interested to know so that we can figure what's causing this.
My unrooted Verizon g3 does not say modified. It says official.

Hypothetical.... lets say someone bought it, played with it and rooted it or botched a root and returned it. try root checker in app store. just saying. makes more sense then someone snuck in your bedroom and took it and rooted while you were sleeping and returned it.
Another hypothetical...
Could it switch to "modified" if one were not rooted but had disabled some of the bloat? Just a thought.

As of now, I cannot tell what it was to change it to modified, I went ahead and tried a reset through the settings and it kept the modified status, did a flash restore and it finally got rid of the modified and is now stating Official.
(To note that when it was in download mode it also stated modified before I flashed it with the ToT file.)
I did also find the reason for the verizon server to crash, which I cannot find the location of the thread elsewhere, but it is due to Google+ and one of verizons apps not being compatible with each other and eventually causing verizons app to crash. The only way so far to fix it is either downgrade google+ to stock, or disable the VerizonAvsService to stop the crash at boot.

If it is simply certificates, then follow the screenshots.
If you think the phone has been tempered, or rooted to gain unauthorised access to you, you'll have to boot into Download Mode and check KNOX status. If it contains 1, then you're screwed, and I advise you to go to the police.
If it is 0x0, then you're fine, but you must wipe/format the phone, just to make sure nothing is left that may track you. Unless your wife's boyfriend works at Samsung or your carrier's company. Haha. Then you're totally done for.
I thought people lost hope in marriage in Western Communities. Nothing is the same it was back then.

KNOX is not something that can be disabled and enabled, it is a Samsung feature, they give it a special treatment that if someone tried to modify the device in an unauthorised way, it'll trip a fuse that cannot be repaired.
So it is simple, either the device is still under KNOX, or it is not, and you're probably being hacked, without you noticing that.
My credentials' storage also says backed up to hardware, it's normal. You simply follow the screenshots to clear any user-added credentials, if there's none, you won't have to worry.
