In attempting to edit my Build.prop with root explorer to fix my Google Wallet issue, I must have screwed something up. When I try to re-boot the phone, it wont boot up.
My best guess is, when attempting to revert back to Build.prop.bk (or whatever the back up file was named), I deleted the .bk but didn't save it, and now have TWO DIFFERENT Build.prop.bk files, and no Build.prop.
I can boot into the screen that shows "Fastboot", "Recovery" (though I haven't installed any recovery and have not unlocked the bootloader), "Factory Reset", etc.
Is there any way to get to the Build.prop file using my windows computer or even using the phone, and check to see it's named correctly? I'd really like to not have to reset the phone.
Oh, I don't know if this is relevant, but I am rooted and the screen shows ***Tampered*** and ***Locked***.
Well, no answers so far.
I have since tried clearing storage AND restoring back to factory settings, but it still will not boot! Also, it is extremely difficult to get to the Hboot screen. Holding down power and vol down only works one out of maybe 6 or 8 times. I don't know why.

Well, I need to read about how to do that.
When you say that could risk a "bricked Google Wallet chip", do you mean it could screw up ONLY google wallet, or it could screw up my NFC chip altogether???
Also, any link on where to get and run RUU? That is the stock ROM, no? If my phone won't do a factory reset, I assume I have to download the stock ROM?
I also found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27248539
However, my Hboot screen also shows S-On, even though I had rooted. I may have left SuperSU with superuser off when this happened. Will that affect my ability to fix this?
Thanks.
im not 100% but i believe running ruu will unroot you and factory reset.also it will jst brick the secure element not other nfc capabilities.did you reset wallet before you messed up the build prop or was it still setup?
EDIT:here i the link for the ruu.also please don't follow that guide if you are not htc dev unlocked because it is impossible to flash a recovery unless your htc dev unlocked/unlocked bootloader
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Jewel
I had just got Google wallet working! The instructions I was following said, after you get it working, temp unroot and reboot the phone. Thats where I got stuck!
So no, I did not have the chance to re-set Google Wallet.
Thanks for the link. So is that the stock ROM? Will I have to update my PRL? Do I download the newest (higher version number)?
well you could possibly brick the secure element.if it bricks the secure element just unroot and take it back to sprint.yes download 1.13.xxx
no need to update prl
Well, I'm having no luck fixing this.
I am trying to use ADB and Fastboot on my Win 7 PC to flash the RUU to my phone. I don't really know if I'm doing it correctly though.
Edit: Well, I feel pretty stupid. I finally realized that an exe file needs to be run from the computer. I guess I'm just soooo frustrated I can't think.
So I ran it and it force closed. Let me try that again.
just click the ruu and follow the steps no need to use adb
Thank you, par05is!!!
That seems to have done it. You were the only one to reply, and I am grateful.
I just don't know how I f'd this up to begin with. Now I have to re-ad everything and re-root. But no Google wallet fixes for me.
If they want me to use it, they can fix it!!
No problem if you need help with the wallet I can help.they put unnecessary steps
Yes, that would be great.
But I'm more than a little worried, trying to do that is what got me into this mess in the first place! I successfully edited the build.prop file a couple of days ago to get file associations back, but I must have f'd up editing it again today.
Since I was un-able to reset Google Wallet before flashing that RUU, GW now tells me my country is not supported!

Yes, after the update I still get the "GW is not certified in your country or on your device/carrier.
I've tried un-installing the update, clearing the data, re-installing the update, but still get the message.
So mtg981, does the build.prop edit fix this? Or are you saying to forget Wallet right now till Google fixes it or someone comes up with a new fix?
some people are editing the build.prop file by using the model number of a nexus phone, in think it was. That id probably what you were trying? As much trouble as it has been, I'm forgetting about it. I heard Sprint was wallet's last carrier to support it, and now Sprint might be starting their own payment form.

Apple is trying to use iTunes for people to pay for everything. That is why there is the big race for carriers to develop their own "reliable" payment forms-like apple and iTunes. Apple could try and patent that some how, if they reach that point of letting people buy anything with their iPhone, through iTunes.
And that would suck! Another apple patent!

Today every time I reboot, Google Wallet is asking for root permissions. I haven't allowed it. Does this happen to anybody else? Seems a little odd to me......
Same has been happening to me.

It does that to tell if you have root. It's so it can put the unsupported device flag at the top. It also checks /system/app/ for a Superuser.apk to tell also.
If ANYTHING asks you for root that doesn't need it/that you didn't want it to have/you didn't request, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS deny permissions.
Wallet will function fine without root.
So what is the outcome here? I just rooted using the method that zedomax posted, and got the "unsupported device" notification. I denied superuser privileges to Wallet when it asked, but what exactly is happening when it says "unsupported device"?

Nothing. It has just detected that you're rooted. If you tap on "More info" on the unsupported device banner, it tells you more info about it. Even if you deny su perms, it still knows if you have su. It's only asking to check if su exists.
do NOT give wallet root! you'll get unsupported device, then if you flash another rom or unlock/lock it or unroot or any other changes after you give it superuser/root permissions, you will brick your NFC chip with secure element error! the only reliable fix for that so far is sprint is replacing your phone with another.
heed that wise man's advice! NEVER give superuser to anything that doesn't require it!! especially most especially WALLET
----
it says "unsupported device"because wallet isn't supported on rooted devices, that's why it checks for root. this is on purpose because google or sprint won't warranty or troubleshoot or insure or give you support or help or even a sympathetic ear about wallet on unsupported devices because you are dealing with MONEY and FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS. if your
phone is hacked, stolen, or lost, and you loose money from someone spending your stuff, your only protection is whatever the credit card company will give you if you can convince them. THAT'S why it checks for rooted devices. just so you all know

Even if you deny su, it still will show unsupported and know that you're rooted. By the su prompt coming up, the app knows you're rooted.

Please don't post misleading info...allowing or denying root privileges to google wallet has nothing to do with bricking the secure element of the NFC chip.
only after you do something else rom/root wise. without clearing data and saved info and settings.
So for some one like me who rooted allowed it to have permission, thinking that unsupported device was bad cleared my cache and then unrooted thinking this would fix this issue. Apparently not, so who has a fix or a thought of one?

I'm sure everyone knows that you should always wipe everything before installing a new rom... If they don't then they deserve what happens to them..
I however am having an issue with the "initializing your device"... Its been sitting here for an extremely long time, and is annoying. -- Any ideas anyone? I've done research and some people have said its down and some have said its up, etc... So if anyone has a for sure answer that would be much appreciated.

I have to hit ok and it closes the app.. not sure what i should do, im running fresh rom 5.1.1 and it was working earlier today.. i havent installed any apps or anything like that..
i keep thinking to clear the app data and uninstall the update, but im afraid of breaking my secure element.. Anyone have any ideas?

Same thing. I've been fighting with it all day cuz I thought it was because I flashed a custom ROM, but I've even gone back to stock and still getting it.
Interesting. Add this to the google wallet mystery bag. I just loaded up wallet. My app is nice and friendly with me still. I just rebooted a few times about an hour ago too as I did a nandroid(or the twrp equivalent).
I hope that google figures this out because
1. I want to support google and I want them to be successful
2. When iPhone 7 comes out with NFC technology, they will steal the glory and everyone in the cult will be oblivious that android even utilized it first. Google should patent and make an itc suit on it. Hehe.
EDIT/UPDATE
Upon waking up this morning and being paid, I was going to add funds to my google wallet account. I open the app and get the not supported in yuour country message.
I'm glad I at least didn't apply any money to it beforehand where I couldn't use it now.

I've been doing my best in keeping up with all of the OTA threads but not sure what to do. I know I don't want to lose root or HBOOT.
I am currently running stock with ROOT, S-ON. I have not tried any of the custom ROMs to this point nor loaded TWRP.
I need root for Titanium Back-up and a couple other, non-essential apps. I was successfully using Wallet prior to their shutting it down and am eagerly looking to have it back. While not totally founded, I don't want to risk bricking NFC - though it looks like there is no definitive on whether going to RUU or anything else will brick this.
So, what's my best approach? I'm not opposed to going S-OFF as I was there on the OG EVO - just haven't had a need yet. I do want to be able to flash the radio though since I've had issue with WiFi NOT disconnecting when I leave a hotspot and go to 3G.
Thanks for any input and justification you can provide.

Skimming is when someone steals your credit card number by swiping it through a card reader they are carrying or by replacing the swipe device at a gas pump, etc. they then create a fake credit card with the number they sole and place fraudulent charges. This has happened to me twice in 2 years. Part of why I want google wallet everywhere.

I have a rooted LTEVO (using Zedomax's method), with a modified build.prop (for the Apple patent issue), and I am trying to gain s-off/install TWRP/install custom ROM/etc.
I have read multiple warnings to reset Google wallet before proceeding with custom ROM installs. However, when I open GW, I can't do anything other than press "ok" to the pop-up stating "Not supported" (Unfortunately, Google wallet is not yet available for your device or mobile network).
Is there another way to reset GW? Should I proceed with s-off/custom ROM/etc without doing anything to GW?

It shouldn't do an OTA, they should have only gave you the steps to change whoever's phone number to your own. I don't have all the steps of what u do around but I know you would need to go into something from the dialer and back out their number and enter yours. Then yeah, update prl and profile with what they already told u. I've done this twice when I gave my cuz my past 2 s-off eVos. I think they only gave you part of what needs to be done, the last half. unless your phone already is working under your own number. If that's it then just reset how they said. It won't OTA a rom and you never have to hit install even if an OTA actually downloaded. Never sit there and be one of these people that reads on xda but still takes an OTA.
Swyped from my eVo
i did the update before your reply. but following the steps it just resets identity of the phone, so yours will be loaded ota. There was no updating of the firmware/radios/etc as I was told on the phone. I should've known not to panic, but I like to try to do my research before I try something new. I already called sprint and gave them the new info. (She was nice, but asked me to pull the phone backing off and remove the battery. So I shouldn't have worried about it.)
long story short. phone works and now i'm sifting through a week of messages.
All they want u to do is update the profile and prl. It will do nothing to your rooted status or hurt anything. I would strongly recomend u go into Google wallet and make sure they don't have it set up. If so do a reset on the app. Then u can do a factory reset on the phone to wipe out all the other persons personal info and u can sign into your Google account. As long as u don't do a HTC software update u are not screwing up your root or Rom settings.
