[Q] How to enable tether... build.prop? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

How to enable?
I know with the HTC Jetstream, we had to go in with Root Explorer, mount /system and change some values around in build.prop. Very simple.
I went in to the build.prop file in /system but didn't see where to edit those same values.
I'm hoping to just simply use the stock tether app. I enjoy its UI.
Also, I saw no thread on this so this might be a good thread to have around...

Hmmm. I thought it was an edit in the services.jar. ?
sent from my Evo LTE, usually.

And how would I go about editting services.jar? It isn't text edition friendly like build.prop.
I believe this is an important question for those wanting to use stock tether.

I just downloaded WiFi Tether 3.1 beta from the Play Store. I have the Device Profile as Generic ICS and it works fine. The only thing I have done is Root the phone, still on the stock rom.

Yea. I could use Google's WiFi tether I'm sure, but I prefer the stock.

I use wireless tether to. It works perfectly. What difference does it matter what app you use to tether so long as you are able to tether?
Sent from my EVO using XDA

Have either of you tethered to an Andriod tablet? On my photon, I couldn't get wifi tether app to be used on my tablet.
Are you transmitting in Ad-Hoc mode or Infrastructure?

Wait, Is there a free way to tether without root?

I'm not sure. I think it'd be a smali edit. I'm just going by what I seem to remember reading. I don't know how to edit smali. Sorry.

Would anybody...

Would anybody be interested in a stockish ROM, with many minor modifications that keep it running fast, smooth, great on the battery, and doesn't over heat? On top of that doesn't lag, lock up, or reboot It's self.

I know that is something many want, but I won't put it in my ROM, as I'm not looking for any trouble since Sprint is now looking into tethering more. I wouldn't mind helping you get it though.

Try using Barnacle? That's the only one that worked for me on stock, and cracked hotspot worked on another rom.
OP, I'd love a rom like that, honestly. I need better battery life by far, or at least some way to undervolt with hboot 1.50.

I've been using the tether app since my hero and personally I don't like that it randomly quits working. I get started with errors to often. Also my wifes nexus had hotspot hacked and I took the ota and broke root (on purpose) and even unrooted the hotspot still works. I'm hoping if I break root somehow in the future I can be saved with that same concept. Other than that I love the tether app because it also has 4g

Because sprint hotspot has. Quick toggle button thingy that you can just press and turn on. Unless someone can get the WiFi tether to work on the quick settings then I prefer the sprint hotspot.

Also, I understand the convenience of tethering being in the quick settings. I'm interested in looking into changing it to use the WiFi tether app. LOL

Sprint HotSpot with 4G possible?

So I rooted my sister's Epic 4G touch phone and then flashed this mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394371
I was able to get 4G speed through the Sprint HotSpot on her phone.
I was curious to hear reasons why this would or wouldn't be possible on our EVO 3D's...
I'm not a developer, just an active forum member/flashaholic.
Thanks!
EDIT: I normally use WiFi Tether beta version 6. This post is regarding the stock hotspot app that can currently be modded to work on ONLY 3G.

In the OP of the link, they comment the original mod was done by Necrosan who I consider a good friend and I do recall when he was working on this.
It has been a few months, but I want to recall he was modifying changes in the framework to bypass their security checks.
In theory, sure this could be done on the EVO 3D. In actuality, somebody with great Java/Smali knowledge and the ability to reverse the apk files looking for the security checks would need to go through the EVO 3D.
For starters, HTC and Samsung are setup quite differently in their framwork files. HTC is generally a bit more *complex* due to Sense.
In theory, it would take somebody with the time and know how. In actuality, I haven't seen many people post up about this or request it.
I know Necrosan would enjoy the challenge but I can't recall if he has the EVO 3D device. Might be worthwhile posting a request or politely PM'n the devs to ask if they're able to undertake this project on the EVO 3D.
Hope that helps add a bit of clarity to the process!

+1 for Wifi Tether using 4G. You have to make sure that you check the enable routing fix in the settings in order to get it to work. I never checked the MSS clamping setting and never had any problems. Anyone know what MSS clamping is supposed to do? A quick google search shows that it is a hack that can break a lot of other things. Thoughts?

I've used the WiFi tether beta 6 app to get 4G. I even checked using speedtest.net on my laptop to make sure I actually got 4G speed.
In the OP, I was wondering if the stock Sprint Hotspot could be hacked (like on my sister's epic 4G touch)...it's just one less app to install.
I just like to keep my EVO 3D with the least amount of apps possible. More room to take pictures and video of my little boy.

Tether your Touchpad

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

Use a custom rom, most come with "wifi tether" icon is yellow wireless bands. If you don't want to do that look up wifi tether fix. I think it's a zip file you can get and flash using recovery.
