I really need this since I just moved and have no internets. Stock tethering doesn't work and google wifi tether doesn't work. Am I missing something?
Are you rooted?

Of course.

Well stock tethering won't work without the tethering plan. For the wireless teether app in the market it won't work right out of the box, you gotta change some stuff in the settings.

Actually the one in the market won't work at all.
Goto the SOURCE and get the Beta (it's not in the Market)
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Set Generic ICS, Router Fix and MSS Clamping
This assumes your rooted.
FoxFi works on stock. Free in the Play Store.
The market wifi tether works just fine if you change your device profile to generic ics. That's the only change i made and I've used it with a kindle fire and a Dell vostro 1500.
Getting ready to try these tips. Thanks you guyz.
Thanks. The settings above worked!

On my phone, the stock hotspot app doesn't work as I do not have a tethering plan. You can run the app but 3G/4G will be cut off.
android-wifi-tether beta6 works properly for 3G only, of course, after rooting and choosing the Galaxy 2/netd mode. However, it does not work on 4G and in fact, as someone else pointed out, it will disable 4G until your phone is restarted.
On my phone, barnacle tether works under 4G but doesn't work with 3G.
In short, root your phone. Use android-wifi-tether under 3G and barnacle tether under 4G.
does that only happen when using beta 6? I'm using beta 5 n 4g works fine for me.

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.
What am I missing?

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....
@Salvation27/: u csn try this app Clockworkmode tether

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.
I have a rooted Bionic, works really sweet with it.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

How to enable?
I know with the HTC Jetstream, we had to go in with Root Explorer, mount /system and change some values around in build.prop. Very simple.
I went in to the build.prop file in /system but didn't see where to edit those same values.
I'm hoping to just simply use the stock tether app. I enjoy its UI.
Also, I saw no thread on this so this might be a good thread to have around...
Hmmm. I thought it was an edit in the services.jar. ?
sent from my Evo LTE, usually.
And how would I go about editting services.jar? It isn't text edition friendly like build.prop.
I believe this is an important question for those wanting to use stock tether.

I just downloaded WiFi Tether 3.1 beta from the Play Store. I have the Device Profile as Generic ICS and it works fine. The only thing I have done is Root the phone, still on the stock rom.
Yea. I could use Google's WiFi tether I'm sure, but I prefer the stock.

I use wireless tether to. It works perfectly. What difference does it matter what app you use to tether so long as you are able to tether?

Have either of you tethered to an Andriod tablet? On my photon, I couldn't get wifi tether app to be used on my tablet.
Are you transmitting in Ad-Hoc mode or Infrastructure?
Wait, Is there a free way to tether without root?

Actually tethering as we speak, using this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
for the profile set it to generic ics
I read FoxFi from Amazon App Market works w/out root, but I haven't tried it yet so I can't confirm this.
Anyone tried it?

i've used FoxFi on my transform and it worked like a dream though i was rooted. have a buddy uses it on his bionic unrooted.
it's interesting how it works though. it actually activated the hotspot app on my transform though it wasn't reporting it to the carrier at all.
i'm also curious if it works on the LTEvo
Works great on mine unrooted. Tethered old evo and ipad no problem. For some reason you can't change the SSID or use any encryption though.

for android-wifi-tether i think i remember reading that you should have wifi-driver reload, MSS Clamping as well as routing fix checked. The device profile should be Generic-ICS. With those settings on it works with mine on PKMN rom as well as when i was running stock rooted.
I use FoxFi, works like a dream. Changed SSID and password... all works for me
I am wondering if there is a mod out there that will let me tether my phone to my computer through the USB. I know that the oG EvO Let me do that when i used most roms, is this still under development at the moment?
Can someone please help with WiFi tether. I have a EVO LTE rooted. I have the settings set as generic ics I have mms clapping and routing fix checked. I changed the ssid and the password. I get the computers to connect but with no internet I tryed using the WiFi fix to use the stock hotspot and I got it to work for about 10 min. I also tryed Firefox still no luck please help.

Do you have access control enabled for wifi tether?if so you need to go to access control and check the box to allow traffic through a certain device when its connected.

Firefox is a browser, not a tethering app. So I can see why "you had no luck."
(From foxfi.com): *Sprint has removed FoxFi from Play Store. Sprint users must install/upgrade FoxFi from http://foxfi.com/bin instead.
FoxFi works great on my LTEvo, and it works with or without root; for many, many users I might add.
