[Q] Galaxy s3 video recording quality - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'd love to have read some users' impressions about SGS3 video recording quality, specially if there is any stutter, or focus bump. Is its technology so good that it can be compared to a camcorder or video-reflex in some way? Thanks a lot

it is just amazing. I was playing around with video today and in day light is just perfect and in indoor lighting out is really good too. The picture quality is so so so good.

Thanks for the feedback!

Really useable vid camera, seems a lot crisper than my s2 was, plus whilst videoing
u can snap great pictures at the same time
i am very happy with it.
on the whole the camera seems to blur the crossover between dedicated point and shoots and phones. if i really need a good shot then i'll bring an DSLR but for all other stuff this will do fine.

It works great, but the video is very compressed. Could be better if compressed less I guess. Pictures are very good, when it is bright enough. The flash (LED) is very powerfull!

Does anyone with s3 also have a one series I was thinking about getting the one s but might just wait for white s3

Uhm... anyway i believe it can resolve a lot of detail (i compared video stills from gsmarene video comparison tool).
The only thing I'm a little concerned about now is dropped framerate or focus hunting...
I may seem nagging but I have a video project in mind with smartphones and so need some information .
Thanks!

[Q] Why cant we shoot 1080p ?

Hey guys, simple question really...
since it was proved that the sensation and evo hardware are mostly similar
so whats keeping us from shooting 1080p video ?
I THINK it has to do with having two cameras. I'm not 100% sure.
BUT that's not very important. Recording 1080p on your cellphone is just foolish. File sizes would be through the roof and the difference in quality is not THAT big from what I've seen. It's just more pixels.
I think it was just a tradeoff, 3D for 1080p. I believe the Gnex can do 1080p with its 5MP shooter, so I doubt the 5MP cameras we have are to blame.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Even when it can do 720p, it's not even that good...
Sensation's camera looks much better than ours.
I dont think its the dual sensor thingy..
cuz all camera applications work with no problems so far..
Yeah lots of phones are able to do that with a 5mp cam.. thats what made me wonder in the first place
and I know its 1080p is too much
as for me I dont even use 720p
but I just want to know why we cant ...
It could be done EVO 3d camera takes better pics then Samsung epic can. All about the lighting and clean lens.
Just need a kernel and code for it..
i dont want to be the debbie downer(wommpppp woooooommpp) here but I have never understood shooting 1080p with such a small/crap sensor anyway. The quality would still suck. I believe this applies to all phones. Maybe when new sensor tech comes out but now, its just a marketing number.
camera driverers are kernel related. you would need to write a new driver, new app, pretty much rebuild the camera functions from scratch. it is possible, but an ass load of work and like somebody else mentioned, its a phone, and few phones, including this one, have the hardware quality (because it is much more than just size of sensors) to make it worth while. not like it will have gopro quality ever...

Oh just playing with the epic 4g in sprint I could see the camera absolutely raped my evo 3d
just hate the fact they lied about it at first ya know . Just saw 720p on a friends et4g WOW!!!
I would settle for that 720p any day lol

I'm protesting flashing until CM9 drops for the Evo 3D!!!
again having owned both. epic touch camera did in fact rape my Evo 3D. owned them both side by side. shot the same scene with each phone and viewed the results on my laptop.
that bring said. that was about the only thing I liked over the e3d. the et4g still wreaked of Samsung and their lack of overall build quality. the earpiece was terrible, the screen was not as responsive, the screen was low resolution, just utterly **** overall.
only other thing I thought was decent was the battery life. I got a solid day out of it.
The video quality is limited by how fast the memory card can save data. To save 1080p on a low end memory card would require a huge amount of data to be compressed in real time, which would both be difficult to do resource wise and also significantly lower the video quality.

yes, and to ad to what Haus is saying, and he knows this already, so it's for the OP, the disk write speed is only one factor out of the several that go into making this possible.
There are image processing limits that are hardware related to the EVO 3D, and let's be serious just about anything that is a cell phone, that would make shooting in true HD simply a waste of space and dev time. that fact of it is that you cannot make the light sensors, image sensors, and glass, in the camera any better. Sure, like i said you could built new drivers, basically engineer/re-engineer the firmware to make 1080p happen, but just would do you any good. you are still limited by the device's hardware.
it would still look like **** compared to a go pro or REAL camera. lol

XZU camera: diabolical!

coming from a note 1, Im a little shocked to see just how badly compressed the ZU's camera is.. I dont care about the lack of flash, but the colour is terrible and i often cant see a great improvement from VGA res photos to "8mp" (actually apparently only 7mp.. and only 4:3) .. im clinging to the fact that its the jpg compression that is causing the majority of the lacking detail (looks very much like it) and that an update somewhere along the line will let you save as fine quality or ideally TIF / RAW
I haven't actually got the phone yet but have seen a lot of reviews on this topic and they all agree with you... I think your right that they have rushed out the phone to early adopters to beta test if you like before releasing to the western markets. I'm pretty sure there'll be an update with in a month that improves camera, screen issues as well as Sony app crashes.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It's completely the JPG compression. At 8MP setting, the resolution is 3264x2448. That would be a 22 meg uncompressed file. The photos the ZU takes are 1.5 megs as a JPG. They're way overcompressed and show ridiculous amounts of artifacting. Why do they do this? What year is this? Are we concerned about a 5 meg photo?
My guess is some marketing / support execs decided they didn't want to take support calls for people trying to email a few 5meg JPEGs so they just crank it up to heavily compressed so the files are 1 meg and email easily without any conversion.
I just hate that everything has to be decided based on the lowest common denominator of idiots. Clearly though, that's what's happened here because the camera sensor is probably not bad.
It will be funny when people are all excited to buy Honami because of the 21mp sensor but the final JPGs will be compressed to ****.
Yeah, after 2-3 weeks with this, a coming to love it in general, fact is the camera will have me off to the Note 3... Silly Sony.

The XZU has a camera? Wow, it's so far down my list of priorities, I guess I just didn't notice.
I was actually impressed with the camera on this smartphone. So much better than my Xperia T on color reproduction and noise reduction.
I feel like the camera is really good in light but useless in low light. I love my phone but I may buy something like the galaxy camera or if the qx10 gets a larger holder I would buy that.
so is this truly a software bug and can it fixed by sony

I myself don't bother too much with great camera quality on a smartphone.. Nowadays, it's about capturing the moment rather than checking every pixel out of a picture.. If you are really into such a thing, those QX series is a great addition i guess

I think Sony is using a cheap sensor on the XZU. The pictures are just plain ugly comparative to older phone cameras. The worst picture taken from my HTC Butterfly looks way better than the best picture taken by my XZU.

I'm contented with how the picture that I took with my XZU turned out. Maybe because I am not a "photographer"
Note: Photos were cropped and I just encircled some parts of it, as I used them in reporting something at work. No filter done though!

From the pics you posted you can clearly (or not) notice the lack of detail. It looks like a collage. Compare that to the photo from my HTC Butterfly at the same 8MP.

The quality... is pretty bad.
My Galaxy Note 2 camera is much much better.
The quality is so bad that even for a basic photo of friends it doesnt do.
Like the other guy said, if you take a photo of a whiteboard at college, or at a presentation it comes out so bad that you can barely see whats on it.
I don't know how you people are managing to screw things up so bad with the camera. It's no Lumia 1020, but it's really not that bad if you don't use the standard Sony app. Or even if you do, it's fine so long as you don't zoom in. Not sure how you're going to claim it's not good enough for casual pictures of friends. I find it had to believe there are so many photography enthusiasts out there all of a sudden. Before I had a smartphone, I didn't own a camera at all, and I know many people for whom this is also true. I suspect this is the case for many users. Any camera is better than no camera.

Thanks for the links! I am very interested to see how the camera compares to the Note 3. And these pictures look pretty good!
I was definitely going to get the Note 3 until I read it doesn't have OIS, now I am considering the G2... And the price is pretty good also. Only $575 off contract vs $725 for the Note 3 on AT&T.

Yep, and in my opinion there is HUGE difference between that and hardware OIS...

Well I saw this yesterday
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Camera-shootout-Note-3-vs-Galaxy-S4-vs-G2-vs-iPhone-5-vs-One_id47239
I can't find any definitive proof that the Note 3 doesn't have OIS. The O in OIS stands for optical, so there is no such thing as a digital OIS. That's just simple image stabilization, without the O.
Nvm. Poopoo it doesn't have it. I wasn't planning on getting it anyway. No one bothers to mention it besides dpreview. At least I can rely on them to get the camera specs right.
http://connect.dpreview.com/post/7967117746/hands-on-with-samsung-gaalxy-note-iii
So far the LG G2 is my fallback plan. The Xperia Z1 has established itself as having an awful camera, and screen, and is big and heavy for a small 5". The Note 3 is more of the same. I am sick of my cheap ass built Note 2 with squishy cover. No plans to upgrade to the same thing. My only hope is the Oppo N1 comes out to be amazing, and has a killer camera. All other companies have laid out their disappointing hands.

There are already a bunch of shootouts and comparisons out there. The HTC camera has only 4MP so it looks blurry no matter what. It couldn't compare to 8MP cameras, much less the newer 13MP ones right now. HTC also has very bad processing with weird colors and heavy sharpening and noise removal. It was one of the best low light shooters on Android, but the G2 can compete with OIS, and has much better resolution.

Most of the pictures I've seen are from reviewers, not average users and that's what I'd like to see.
Just because the HTC One only has 4mp doesn't automatically mean blurry... I'm a crap photographer which I'll readily admit and I've got some great shots on the HTC One by just pointing and clicking. Here are a couple examples... If the G2 can do better, I'll be really happy with it! I'm tempted to head to an AT&T store this morning.

You are right in a way. I have HTC One too but pictures become blur as you start to zoom-in because it is only 4MP. Whereas 13MP on the other hand has 3 times more detail in the picture. And to make the point clear, in a common user perspective G2 can blow HTC one out of water (in camera).
A quick pic I took in my office yesterday. Auto settings, didn't change anything.

Some pics from yesterday, not really trying just pointing and shooting. Also i had changed my lcd density without setting the xposed framework to put the camera back at 480 so auto focus was confused the entire time.

Video recording is a mess

I recorded a few videos this weekend and I'm severely disappointed. The hyper-active auto focus makes the videos almost unwatchable plus there was some strange freezing/macroblocking going on also. Everyone else having the same issues?

I have to agree from what my samples have shown at 1080p 60fps. Blurry, focusing seems inconsistent, and requires very good conditions to record to even closely resemble 1080p. But my still photos seem good so not sure why there's inconsistency.

The breathing issue was also present with the G Pro. LG fixed it in a firmware update, meaning that at least that issue may have a remedy. I noticed the issue in Anandtech's videos in their mini review.
Can you use another camera app like lgcamera and tap to focus during video?

Thanks for creating and sharing that man. I like how you actually recorded with both devices at the same time instead of one at a time, while trying to do the exact same thing, which is never exactly the same.
You can really see the difference in the motion blurring effect between the S8 and Note8 especially in darker scenes.
Thanks again.

Not to be negative, but I don't see the difference to justify the additional spend. Still photos perhaps. Regardless, thank you for taking the time and effort to putting this together.

The stuttering is why I only recorded in 1080/60 with my S8+. Looks like I will be able to do UHD now. Can't wait until we have root so we can get that data rate to 100+ Mbps where it needs to be with UHD. 60FPS would be nice too.
