[Q] Download mode counter - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if flashing the custom recovery also triggers the counter yet. No definitive answer from the search.
First post of Chainfires [PRERLS-REF] Root, BL, Kernel, Recovery says "Whether or not flashing a custom recovery also triggers this counter is as of yet unknown."

[Q] Question about rooting this phone

Hi I am going to be rooting this phone soon but before I do I want to make sure I fully understand everything I do because I am nosey and this is how I learn. So I ask alot of questions usually NOOB questions.
So As I understand it All I have to do is install a custom kernel which has clockworkmod on it. Now when I do that is CWM installed on the recovery partition of the phone so if all else fails I can still get into CWM to install a backup? I know if you use rom manager it fake flashes and the only way to get into CWM is through rom manager and mif the phone wont boot you are screwd. Also this phone has download mode is that a factory way to flash things? Like when I install a ROM do I flash it in download mode or do I flash it in Clockworkmod or do both work? Also I noticed that there are different versions of this phone I am guessing for different carriers. I have SGHt-989 so are all ropms okay for all the model or are they model specific? It seems that the 9100 is the most popular model. I am sorry for all the questions but as soon as I am comfortable with this device I can start to understand it.
Thanks alot
Charlie
To root your T-mobile SGS2, watch this video

Rom manager only does fake flashes. Only way to get cwm on our phone is via flashing a kernel that supports it.
Download mode can be used for first time rooting (to flash kernels), also for flashing roms via odin.
Once you're rooted, with a cwm supported kernel, you can use the clockwork recovery to flash roms, or even kernels. This way, it deosn't increase your binary counter.
i9100 is more popular because it is the international model and most common.

help

ok guys i odin the stock rom with root, how in the heck i get into recovery mode and install cm7? i tried rom manager and it didnt work any other ideas?
Rom manager does not work correctly on stock. (It will work once you are on cm7.) You need to install a kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery. If you install the kernel with Odin or Heimdall, it will increment the flash counter and cause the initial I9100 boot screen with yellow warning triangle. If this is a concern to you, use the Guide linked in my signature to avoid that.

Stock Kernel + Custom Rom?

I know flashing an custom kernel will increase the flash count, but if I flash a stock kernel but only use custom ROM would that still increase the counter?
Flashing a custom kernel only increases the counter if done from download mode (i.e. with Odin/heimdall). Most custom ROMs are flashed from CWM, and if you do that, the counter will not increase regardless of whether it includes a custom kernel.
However, if you flash a custom ROM from download mode and that ROM includes a custom kernel, your counter will increase. If you come across a custom ROM which is flashable from download mode and does not include a custom kernel, it will not increase your custom binary counter.
It's largely irrelevant anyway with the likes of a USB jig or TriangleAway. If you didn't want to use either of those and already have root from a method such as zergRush, you could always use Mobile Odin to prevent counter increases.

ATT OTA tripped flash counter!?

Well, anybody or devs who can explain to me why the official OTA would trip flash counter for noob like me?
I did flash CWM 5.5.0.4 via ODIN that caused counter to become 1.
Then flashed Super User v0.87 (now updated v0.93) via CWM, and counter stayed at 1.
I did not get into download mode after that, nor flashed anything via CWM.
No custom Rom installed yet.
Installed insecure boot using Samsung Tool Kit V1.0 by Mksip (great tool):good:
Then OTA update this morning.
It downloaded fine, and after backing up Google search by TB, I tried to install.
I went into recovery automatically, and gave me "installation aborted. unverified signature"
So I went into download mode to check, and it shows flash counter now upto 3.
And shows as custom binary, and custom Rom.
I know I did not install any custom ROM yet, why does it think as custom rom and binary?
Is it because of insecure boot I installed?
Any light to this is so much appriciated for my learning for android.
Thanks in advance.

Nand-backup stock SGS3

Hi Guys
I have an International SGS3 and it is still in it's stock status. I don't want to loose the update OTA nor via Kies and also I don't want to trigger the binary counter.
Q1-How can I perform NAND backup to my stock phone without loosing all of these..?
Q2- Does unlocked boot loader with custom recovery(CWM) boot via Android SDK will trigger the the binary counter ?
* when reboot from the custom recovery (cwm) via Android SDK the phone will automatically restores the stock boot-loader
you cant make nandroid backup with stock phone/recovery.
rooting gives you cwm recovery which in turn triggers binary counter.. but there are many ways to reset binary counter.
read the link in my signature for some more info
