Hello
i am using the amazing CM9+ ICS kernel from NaA.
Here my question:
As you can see on the attached Picture, In six days, since i installed the ROM, the ANDROID OS used 0.95 GB background Data? i don`t know if this is relatet to CM9, but i never had this in any other ROM i flashed before. Do i need to disable any background Service or...?

Thank you for your post. Good to know, that it's not only on my phone
My Problem is, i don`t have a Data Flatrate...
So nobody else have this? please post your android os background data

As it seems, ICS reports most of the stuff to Android OS, for example, I've been playing an MMORPG for around a week, and it shows 186KB usage, same for Opera Mini, whereas Android OS shows 186MB.
OS isn't actually consuming the whole .95GB you speak of, but you are certainly using all that data from other processes.

Thank`s for your answer. MarcEcko!
So if i understand you right, please correct me if i'm wrong: all data traffic together is shown as 0.95 GB in Android OS?

Whatever it is actually reporting... it seems like you have a problem. Unless using this much mobile data is normal for you. 1Gb is A LOT!
There are other programs out there that will track the usage by application so that you can really see which apps are consuming the data and be able to do something about it. I was using NetQin Mobile Security for awhile, which should do the trick. There are many other data usage specific apps.

Im having the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S3 running stock ICS. I would really like to know, since I am on a very low data plan. Thanks for any more info.
I just read on another thread that the culprit is the backup/reset option. A lot of ppl say that if you turn this off, Android os background use goes way down. I'll try it and see.

Thanks will try that, I've tracked down it is a matter of large uploads normally 30 to 250 megs that occur in the over night hours (between 1Am and 6AM), but do not know the cause will see if that is it. Also odd that as the phone is connected to a Wifi connection during those hours, so it should not use any mobile data, also as if it is using mobile data when it should be using wifi, will see if I can verify whether this is the case or not tonight.

Since updating to 2.1 I've had a few issues with the stock messenger.....a few times I've had send failed messages, then the recipient got the same text several times (lol) and lately I haven't been getting any notification of new texts until I actually open the messenger.
Is there something I can do to resolve this???
btw, I've looked for the stock 2.1 messenger apk around here, but I can't find it....can someone please provide me with a link

Are you AT&T? If so, I had the same problem, especially with long text and MMS sending pics. I believe it was a problem within the APN. I don't know exactly how, but now I have 2 APN'S and the problem seems to be solved. I have MEdia Net and MEdia Net MMS, which is the AT&T brand name for their browser/network. I have tested the every APN setting posted in the forums, and they are the only ones that deliver large pics and 4page texts consistantly. If you need the settings, post here.

yeah, I am using AT&T....that is actually part of my issue, and the other part is that the notification doesn't show up sometimes until I actually open the messenger.
I've downloaded handcent, and re-installed conversations.apk (the 2.1 messenger) just in case, and so far so good, but I haven't tried a really long text or large pic yet...I'll do that and see what happens

Agreed if you just installed and use default settings, but if you take the time to hand set it up, it is a really useful app. Especially kill when screen off saves battery and data. I find I still have 30% battery on day 2 without charging. Without it my battery last 1 day max. If task killer effects an app/phone performance, then set it to ignore. No reason not to use it at all. Without it most apps with permissions would run continuously.

I probably use my phone a lot more than the average person. I run my own business with my phone when I am out of the office, not to mention my new addiction to the xda app.
I check my ATK frequently because every day is a balancing act of battery vs usage. After using my browser for 30 minutes, I can't believe how many of my installed apps are running for no reason...the list is 2 screens long sometimes.
Without ATK I wouldn't have any way to free up my system?? Are you saying apps running in background or when screen off is better than using ATK?? Hard for me to believe, but you haven't mislead me yet, Batman. I'll give it a try and report back.

Even if you see a long list of apps, sometimes it is not the whole app that is running but only part of it for a while to do a certain task. Android then terminates them when they are idle for a period of time. I also have my brightness set on the lowest setting and only switch on WiFi/3G when I use them. You can download toggle widgets (e.g. APNdroid) from the market to make it easier to toggle these settings.
Also, if you have weak 3G coverage in your area, then that also drains the battery as the phone is constantly searching for the 3G network. Therefore, sometimes I switch my network mode to only 2G (or GSM only) networks rather than GSM/WCDMA preferred.
In conclusion, there are many factors that contribute to how fast your battery is drained, and apps running in the background is certainly one of them but, definitely not the only reason.
Let us know how it goes

My solution is handcent It's much better for me than the stock app. The stock app is working, though. I tried mms & sms....both are fine. I found the custom vibrate feature in handcent and now I can actually feel it vibrate when I get a text because it stays on for a full second!!!

hi all,
I'm not sure which thread should I post my problem since its related to apps then I throw my question here.
I have been trying to keep track of my data usage, its seems that all of apps available manage to show only wifi traffic but not 3g traffic. even I tried to used apps that I used to have also not giving any result.
is it because the apps was design for android v2 not v3?
the data usage show extremely low..

3g Watch Do is the perfect solution, & it works good for me...
Def go with "My Data manager" it is the best on the market acurate and has a handy small widget.
I personally use "SPB Wireless Monitor" on my tab and also on my Galaxy S+ and it works perfectly.
I really like the AT&T communication manager app that comes on the 4g version. It tracks usage real time, including tethering, and syncs with the biller every 6 hours. Unfortunately, they will not have a market version until later this year.

I had similar issues with the official Facebook app. I use Advanced Task Killer (ATK) which is a free download from Market. You can set it to auto-kill apps at regular intervals (in my case, every hour). So the FB app gets killed every now and then, saving whatever battery can be saved..

ATK'ers cause more problems than they help, as every time something is killed, the phone wakes up, kills something, then the app has to be reloaded.
Its highly recommended not to use them.

Maybe pre gingerbread, but as far as I know 2.3.x has always had a LMK (low memory killer) built in, so it does the same thing as a ATK, but its "smart" and doesn't hurt the battery like a ATK does.
I kno this is a super bump but this is the closest thread i could find to my issue...
After facebook recently updating the app i noticed, in the stock application manager on my LG P930, it using about 58% and even spikeing up to 88% CPU usage and using over 40.0 MBs of my RAM i have to stop the app in the application manager for it to stop....
Heres a pic for proof i guess:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1035642&stc=1&d=1335922294
So my actual question is can this harm the hardware to my phone if i dont stop it running after every use? And is there maybe a fix to get it to stop using so much?
i got fb on both sgs1 an sgs2 yes many say it consumes power but y dosnt mine do tht its loggd in 24hrs........cheerz
Facebook for Android sucks really.. I noticed this whole CPU trashing started when they upgraded Facebook some time ago to what is the "current" skin for the past 4-5 months or so. Suddenly, everytime I launch Facebook, when I go back to my home screen it stays running...
Obviously I have the notifications and synch refresh set to never..
Watchdog complains about it...
Connecting via ADB and issuing top shows the katana process eating 20% cpu or more..
Using a terminal app on the phone and issuing top reveals the same thing...
So I just use Watchdog to kill Facebook everytime I'm done using it, or I use the sluggish browser version that doesn't suffer from this cause it runs in the browser
Upgrade after upgrade they can't seem to fix this and it's symptomatic.. not random! At least not on my Nexus S running the latest ICS 4.0.4.
Would be interesting if via ADB we could check the threads of the facebook process and see what's running...
What would be even better would be some sort of channel to complain about this to Facebook.. I mentioned this in my review on the Play store but I don't think anyone cares about what's written there (at least none from the Facebook development team..)

FaceBook
Just 2 of the many Apps that run background processes without my permission and offer no options to stop them loading on boot.
Why TuneIn Radio needs a background process is beyond me. But its a blatant abuse of a weakness in android.

Its not using Ram. Its using CPU and power and monitoring what i do on my phone.
Cashed processes use RAM.
Have you got anymore detail about the app TuneIn Radio?
I've had this installed for a number of weeks now and was unaware or background processes being run.
What type of processes are these and what do they do?
I've had a quick look at the permissions the app has and the following is all I can find:
System Tools - automatically start at boot
Why would it need to start at boot?

Lol. How do you know its a live process. I have Facebook installed and the only thing its doing is running as a service to provide push notifications. I have system panel pro running and Facebooks average CPU consumption is actually under 1%. Can't say the same for tune-in radio
Facebook uses a service for notifications and the messenger i guess, about tunein, don't know. But that's how android works, if you want an app that pushes notifications which are not directly covered within the system itself, you need a service, otherwise there would run the whole app all of the time which needs even more resources (btw, that's how ios handles it).
Simple solution, use the already told or just freeze the app with titanium or disable notifications if possible.

About Facebook, there is a app called sns if I'm not wrong, delete or freeze it with titanium, is just a Facebook interface.
Tunein, check if there isn't an additional service, sometimes there are bad apps where the service starts the app and the app starts the service.

i have uninstalled them now because i am unhappy in the way they run on my system. anything that behaves this way is obviously trying very hard to stay active on my system for a reason.
I guess they are data mining for the adverts that support the app. Not on my phone they dont.

Just because you build computers doesn't mean you understand how they intertwine with the software. Especially since most computers have Windows installed on them. The RAM and caching process is much different compared to Linux, which Android is based off of. Thank you, have a nice day!

Android uses a strict permission policy, you can view every permission an app has before you download it and no app can gather data without given permissions.
I don't know and to be honest i don't care which permissions those 2 apps have, because i don't use them, but i guess at least tunein radio has no access to private data.

Hi...
It's been a week, I experience severe battery drain...
At the night I have 100 % battery, then in the morning it's dead because no power left... I have to recharge it again.. I didn't use it... I just left it with wifi active...
When I check the usage... It show that 80 % consumed by "Media"..
What the hell is this application /services?
Other time, I tried to turn off that services.. But it turn on again automatically...
I did try factory reset, but I still have this issue...
And, a quarter part of the screen (top) is very hot while other part isn't...
Does anyone know what is going on with my XZU?
Thanks in advance...

So to make it simple, it downloaded from night to morning and drained your battery. Do you see apps from the market you didn't download manually installed on your phone? Like a game with over 1gb of data or anything else (if you choices option to auto backup it restore all the apps you use from the market on your previous devices). Or did you put any file to download on any browser reboot our phone before the download is finish (Dolphin browser keep the link in memory and resume or restart download at boot).
First of all I would advise you to put your phone on stamina mod, and set it up if you use some apps like Viber, whatsapp, Facebook and etc... It really improve battery drain while you are not using your phone.

Wifi data details? I m not sure what you mean.. but I m curious that my XZU downloaded any data related to Media...
The last time I remember about it, I played with Jive (which is my primary suspect) (in the Walkman app)...
After that, I tried factory reset...and my last factory reset is last night... and this time, I havent activated my Google account and everything.. just to make sure that no account is activated...
Regarding stamina mod, I have tried it... even used Green Power Premium app (they are very useful)...but only after that issue occurred, then I try to leave it as factory default (I didnt install anything or activate any apps)... and as I said, it still drains the battery severly... and this so called "Media" remains there...
As you can see in the attached pics (sorry for the orientation)..
Thanks ...

Look at this screen shot. On data usage you can show wifi usage as well. Then look if media is listed and how many kb or mb it used. Don't get confuse by the dual panel, my XZU is rooted and I use xposed framework.

download 'betterbattery stats'
Its on the playstore. It will tell you what the wakelocks are. 'media' may be something totally unreleated, and its just what your system thinks is hogging the battery...
do you have LightFlow installed? someone mentioned in another forum that it was killing his battery with that app installed

How about you guys, is this "Media" service also running in the background of your device?
Thanks...

yep here it is... (free/trial version)

PS. My device has been 'up' for 2 days... 'media' isn't on my list of apps drawing current.

Media is not draining anything for me as well. Also just few kb on my data usage, but I remember I got it on my Nexus 7 as well, after a full wipe and flashing a new ROM at morning it was empty. But the day after it wasn't anymore.
You said you didn't registered any gmail account yet. Did it happen as well when you had a Gmail account registered? Just wonder if there is not a bug with the phone connect to Internet and the lack of an account link to playstore.

Before factory reset, yes, my Gmail is activated... now, not yet activated..
BTW, it's been around 15 minutes since I unplugged the charger.. now battery capacity is down to 91%...
It s just standby with wifi active...."Media" consumption 72%
Data service is only around 150 Kb
I just dont understand what is happening...
Maybe battery is damaged?
Do what I suggested. It will tell you exactly what the problem is. Link you to a site explaining what to do for that particular Wake lock.
You can also run an app called 'cool tool'
It will run in real time and tell you what CPU frequency you are running
Here is a video I made about the heat issues of the S4.. It will help you too

Hi, I think the reason of battery drains is not related with downloading data..
I dont know how it happens, but it seems that my device always active even if the screen is off.
I installed app called "wakelock detector"..
The media is the service that keep my device "awake"... it prevents/blocks the system from sleeping...
My question is what is the cause? is my device get infected by virus or malware?
Any suggestion to solve this issue? or is it hardware defect?
EDIT:
I have solved the problem.
I reformatted the sd card and factory reset.
Now, it's back to normal again.
It seems that the system keep on trying to scan the media file in the sd card.
There must be something wrong with my sd card (may be bad sector/cluster).
After reformatted it, everything seems normal.
Cheers

I'm not familiar with that app. Did you try betterbattery stats? It should have told you what it was, and linked you to a site explaining what the app or service is. Then you can freeze that service or uninstall it if its not a system app.
