[Q] Is anyone else just in love with this phone? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had quite a few Android devices, including the Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR, but this one is by far my favorite. I took a Trophy plus some expensive headphones a while back for my RAZR, and finally emerged from the wilderness of WP7 back into Android. This phone is very smooth, and has a wider range of apps and games available than any others that I've owned, besides the OG Droid. It always frustrated me that I couldn't play some of my old favorite GL games on my newer device, but now I can. I do have a class 10 card so that may make a difference too.

Personally, I think aokp reinvented this 2 year old phone. Hoping to replace it soon with a gs3 from Verizon if we are lucky.
I tell people there isn't much this phone can't do.

Yeah I'm running AOKP right now and it is very smooth. Very comparable to the GNexus in most tasks. I've owned one, so trust me, I know.

i came from a DX2 and honestly i absolutely love this phone more, this phone is for one much more enjoyable than my dx2 because of the open source, true open source, no locked bootloaders to overcome, and no waiting.
the development for this 2 year old phone is quite awesome! a phone designed to run GB is running AOSP ICS and its running amazingly,i believe & feel that the development for this phone will continue, maybe not for forever, but for a loooooooooooooooong time at least

Yeah I had X2 for a few months, and it was horrible. One true dev, and another few off and on. The software really crippled that phone.

it wasnt the software that crippled it, it was the way Motorola handled the software by locking down their damned phones. thats the worst of it all

Yeah that's what I meant. You couldn't remove all the Moto software. Same thing with the RAZR, it bottle-necked like crazy, and you couldn't fix it. All Moto dual-cores seem to do that. It's that jumpy lag that pops up every now and again.

I think it's a good phone overall, but avoid it if you're a heavy GPS user. Now that I've upgraded to a LG Spectrum my Fascinate is freed up to play with. I came from a Droid Eris to the Fascinate and found the Samsung style of android daunting with Odin, PIT files, MTD vs non MTD, Voodoo, multiple versions of CWM. It will make your head spin. My Eris once rooted, all I had to do was throw zips on the SD card and flash them, I didn't have to think about can I go from ROM A to ROM B without soft-bricking the phone etc. One of the best things about the Fascinate was they show up on Cowboom.com from time to time for about $70 with no contract.
My spectrum has a very good screen, but still doesn't have the richness of a Samsung display. One thing I could always hold over the "IClones" that are everywhere when they go on and on about their precious retina display was, ok you have a high pixel density, but you also have a smaller screen, and the colors feel washed out.
My screen is bigger and has colors that POP!

True, if Motorola would give us the key to unlock the phones then the phone might blow the fascinate out of the water with numerous kernels and everything, but being locked down the Motorola Droid X2 running GB 2.3.5 compared to a stock Fascinate running the same OS the fascinate seems to blow the Droid X2 outta the water IMO. I think blur is a total waste of space on the phone and the kernel being locked is even worse, but this has been said on every human known forum for development on the internet.
I wish Motorola would do what Samsung is doing and providing the phone's being unlocked at the get go, but now that I have Samsung, I'm never going back!
sorry for the long winded rant that kept going back to the fact that Motorola needs to provide an unlock tool without having to buy a new phone without a warranty.

What I really miss is the Rezound. I traded my Nexus for a RAZR because I thought surely Motorola had improved since the X2. I was wrong, clearly. I ended up trading my RAZR for a Trophy plus some nice headphones then the Trophy for the Fascinate. I'd love a Rezound though lol.

Most likely
Droid X2 prob had development problems with ginger before release, so they went back to froyo and shipped them out to meet their deadlines. Wouldn't make sense financially to spend all that money on different software for the individual phones, when they can just tweak the same one to run on all of them. That's my theory anyways. I'm eyeballing the Nexus Prime, or the Samsung Function. I have a hook up for upgrades whenever though. I say stick with the X2 it will probably run really well with the update, or even some rom love.

I highly doubt that Verizon will get the Nexus Prime, or any Nexus to be honest. I'd probably pass the Function myself, samsung always makes phones of crappy build/poor materials etc. I also doubt that Verizon will get the s2, s3 most likely, but s2 doubtful.

There was a time when I was convinced that VZW would be offering the Galaxy S2 by sometime this summer. Now I'm thinking you could be right. After I played with the Fascinate (S1), that I bought my wife for Mother's Day, the S2 was going to be MY next phone to replace my old WinMoble phone. But I quite waiting and got a Droid X2 instead. I'm glad I did. No regrets at all! (...except for that awful DROIDDDDD sound, which I've managed to change )

I believe battery life importance is by far the most important thing in a phone. Can't wait for the day when battery life on these and 4G (since their going to phase 3G out) is fantastic (more then 10 hours heavy use). Thats just wishful thinking because it'll never happen.
Question for those here, when 3G phones do get phased out and were stuck with 4G and its horrible battery life is everyone just going to go with the flow or anyone stick with the same phone they currently have.

If you want to hear yet another "negative thing" about the Thunderbold, I think it feels rather "clunky" in your hand. Sorta like a small brick.
I had a Thunderbolt and came to the x2. It's a great phone, development is awesome, ie it has cm7 and a slew of sense based roms. Battery life is easily manageable. I'd go back if i could.

Go for the Bolt, especially if you're into custom roms. We only have 2 roms...which aren't really custom roms, they're just tweaked stock roms. Nothing like CM7 or MIUI.
Once the Bionic comes out, a good handful of people will get it. I doubt a lot of devs will be looking at it (locked loader, sick of waiting for it). The Bionic, the Vigor, and the rumored soon released Nexus Prime are going to push us to the back of the room. I plan on trying to sell my x2 once the Prime or Vigor comes out, actually I regret getting it since the Prime and Vigor are coming out so soon

Can you root a stock Samsung phone now without having to deal with that "Rage against the Cage" nonsense? Rage in the cage new? Never had to use it. First root ever was a one click root i found somewhere. Then i used Odin to flash the stock froyo pre-root. I believe i seen a pre-root GB stock over there, too.

I believe "Rage against the Cage" is the exploit scheme that they used on the Samsung one-click boot process. It's been about 6 months since I've tried to root the Facinate, so my memory is sketcy. The upside is that, as you mentioned, there are probably a lot of pre-rooted ROM offerings that can be easily flashed with Heimdall (or Odin, if yer into that).
I agree Sammy makes a good phone. Wife loves her Facinate. Sadly, the Galaxy II never made it to Verizon, but now lots of folks are waiting for the Nexus, which should be out around the end of the month. But I also like the Moto Droid line, now that we've been given some developer attention. The hardware is top notch, and my X2 is running VERY snappy and stable on Moto-Ginger-Funk v7a. I have no reason to want to trade up for a long while yet (unless Google cannot get a handle on their funky Market issue).
Droid Razr looks very sharp (sorry for the pun). I'm a little afraid of the non-removeable battery, though. There are loads of times that I have recoved my X2 from brink of "brickhood" just by pulling the battery and booting into recovery.
I'm not too crazy about the Razr's non-detachable battery. All too often taking the battery out and putting it back in seems to solve a problem, without having that ability on the Razr I'm somewhat concerned.
Odin=Heimdall but for diff operating systems, i believe. When my contract is up, I'm looking into sprint if vzw isn't allowed to launch the SGSII. And no, i have no intentions of turning this thread into a "who it's better sprint or vzw". Carry on w/ upgrade discussion...

I'm pretty sure that the razr has a failsafe two buttons u.press to kill battery connection or something similar
.like a "hard kill" switch.
I am upgrading to the ReZound Monday. There are more reasons not to get the Razr, than there are to get it lol. If you are in an X2 now, you are better off either keeping it and riding out your time, or getting the ReZound/Nexus, at least right now.

What led you to the Rezound? Beats audio or the the display?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Well, the headphones alone carry a very hefty price, so getting them "free" for the same price as the other phones is a good incentive(probably why they aren't advertising the phone). I already have the SkullCandy Titan Earbuds, so I really don't NEED the Beats Audio ones. But, the camera's on it are both better. The screen resolution is on par with the nexus on a DX2 size screen. Removable battery, SD storage, unlockable BL, 1.5GHz processor.. Basically, the only "feature" it doesn't carry is the super slim design, and who gives a **** if the phone is lacking in so many other categories? lol.
My moms Stock Inc2 walked all over my X2 with Eclipse before I even put CM7 on it for her! HTC is doing all the right things, even with Sense. Too many people complain about Samsung, and I lived in Korea for 2 years from 07-09, we are getting their leftovers over here(Thanks FCC/FTC, and assholes running patent wars..Apple).
Yeah Im gonna look into adding a line soon. Not sure if I'm going to resound or nexus yet
Rezound looks sick. As does nexus(ICS!) but I can see resound getting ics eventually.
ha. HTC edge I thought about until I saw it was Tegra. I will wait for reviews on that before even trying it lol. This phone has lowered my expectations for tegra devices lol

Well, it started with the many replacements of the tbolt, then HTC's hard stance against updating their tablets kinda pushed me over the edge, then they updated the flyer/view to broken software and they wont even fix it. Now the Rezound is having touchscreen issues. So I'm just tired of dealing with the problems and the lack of OEM support after purchase. I appreciate the Dev community for the zound, but sammy seems to be stronger in that dept. So I think I am going to give them a shot. I won't touch Moto with a ten foot pole. It may be a bad move, but I'm willing to take that risk after all the issues I have had recently with HTC. So for me, from here on out, it's going to be Nexus, or Samsung.
Samsung is worse.
I love my Rez and I still think of it as probably one of the, if not the most undervalued android phone released to date, but I don't see myself going for yet another carrier exclusive device after this. Of course, reviews might be so great for the DNA that I could change my mind but so far I am not that impressed.
Having said that however, the lack of a LTE capable Nexus 4 kinda limits the options for those looking to upgrade atm and I really cant see myself with a Galaxy S device. Wish Sony would be given a chance at penetrating the US market, they seem to strike a fair balance between corporate dev support, hardware and software quality.
I'll be getting this. The hardware and build quality will be top notch, it can be unlocked through HTCs dev website and be able to load cm. It was between this and the note but son, I am dissapoint at it having the older gen exynos and 720p screen on a 5.5 inch screen.
no, my next phone will be honor 2 or note 2
battery is important factor to me now
i dont think i will ever came back to htc
even im sense-boy
Nah, samsung isn't worse.

Its looking like ill most likely be getting it. I'm thinking ill be getting the DNA and one other new gen phone probably a GSM phone since I have two contracts, one with ATT and one with Verizon.
But I will be more careful than usual with this purchase. I'm currently so broke I can't afford the down payment on a grilled cheese sandwich. But this phone is a priority, and I owe it to the BAMF community. So I've been saving my pennies and will be selling some stuff to raise some funds.

samsungs radios and signal are 10x worse.
in my house, my gs3 gets about 6kbps download on 3g.
my rezound, when its not pulling 4g in my house (which the nexus and GS3 CAN'T), pulls atleast half a meg to a meg per second. doing anything on the gs3 on 3g is terrible, and ridiculously slow. fb app won't even load. rezound loads it no problem. hell, i even tethered 3 tablets to my rezound last night and while we were all browsing at the same time, ti was STILl faster than my gs3
i don't think i'd buy antoher samsung phone ever again, and i really want the DNA...dunno if i wanna fork out 600 bones for it tohugh

Is it worth it?

I am currently using a gnex and I love the development on this phone. However it's really getting under my skin with all the dropped calls and constantly reboot. Should I get the dna with the free promo?

Yes its worth it. YOu can try it for 15 days. Just go for it!
Yes, but be aware that at this p pint in time there is not a software solution for rooting, you have to send it off to get jtagged.

The DNA is worlds beyond the gnex man. The screen is gorgeous! And the battery will last a full day no charging! So glad when I put my gnex down for the dna. When u get it send it to be jtagged before you even turn it on.
No way. I wish I could go back to the Nexus, but the S4 comes out next week. Not having a replaceable battery or SD expansion is awful when you can only get a 16GB phone. Plus, it's impossible to replace the screen of this phone if it cracks, which is terrible. I won't even get into the absolute lack of development.
Suggestion: wait for the S4 next week.

Not finding a different exploit to unlock the bootloader doesn't equal lack of development. There is quite a bit of development here.

Compared to the Nexus, there might as well not be any development. I'm not impressed with the 5 or so Sense ROMs that are almost never updated and the partially working CM.

Yea, your right. It would be so much better if we had 100 iterations of the same ROM like the gnex.

Instead we have 5 iterations of the same ROM, and they never get updated. We're so spoiled!

What's the difference? Still not "impossible", as you so matter of factly stated.

Really. When did you do it? Or is that just what you've heard?
I had mine done by a local shop because it broke, and I had to leave town. They had the screen/digitizer together, in stock, so they got my money. 4 hours later, I had my phone back.

CM is pretty much fully functional now, and we've had at least three ROMs pop up in the past day or two. Expect more with CM up and running.

I'm pretty happy with the development here... This is coming from a crackflasher with 5 or 6 roms plus Ubuntu on my nexus 7. It's picking up very quickly. Also, I think it's fair to say that the ROMs that haven't been updated recently don't really need updates.

Watch any disassembly video of the phone. You have to fully disassemble it just to change the screen.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Meh, I could careless how the screen comes off. A person like me who takes stuff apart and puts it back together wouldn't mind either. Besides, its not like we are taking apart something that has a million wires inside of it. Most phones that I have had, required to be fully disassembled to get the screen out. This phone is most definitely not the first, or the last. Luckily, I have only had to replace one screen out of my collection of phones.
However, given the price of phones, I would think that people would want to take better care of their phones. Sure accidents happen, but I've seen people break screen, after screen, after screen. Like really? If you are worried about disassembling an entire phone to get the screen out, my advice is don't do anything that would crack your phone screen.
I don't buy phones based on screen durability and screen removal. I buy phones based on what it can do for me.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Good for you. I'm not buying another phone that screws you in the off chance it does break and doesn't even let you replace the battery. I felt like I was using a damn iPhone the whole time I have had the DNA, and I am eagerly flocking back to Samsung with my 64GB MicroSD and spare battery in hand.

OP sent you a PM. This thread is about as useless as it gets, I apologize for that.
We generally are a great community as a whole, except for the general section sometimes.
I'll throw my 3ยข in.
Whether it's worth it is up to you. The development of the gnex is awesome BUT it's an almost 2 year old phone running software which didn't exist when it was thought up. No amount of devs are going to be able to make it just that some second faster.
The DNA has that split second. Even unrooted with sense, which is a learning curve it's a great device.
There's some Sense stuff that's annoying but it's a good upgrade for the most part. I'm surprised I'm enjoying it actually.
