Will one come about? I don't exactly want to void my warranty but If there is nobody planning on anything soon, I will.

I do want it although if there is a non-htc bootloader unlock right around the corner, wouldn't it be better to wait a couple days?

Is the bootloader encrypted? If it is you may as well just use htc dev because it will never get unlocked if it is unless someone at htc leaks some keys or something.

Wasn't that the case with the 3d, yet just bit longer than a month my phone was s-off.
Swyped from my eVo
I'm assuming it will happen eventually. With so few ROMs available right now, the only reason I see to unlock the bootloader is to install a custom recovery and flash a rooted ROM along with some mods. I'm a huge fan of mods, but I'm going to let development run its course before making any decisions.
I received my 3D in October and didn't void my warranty until April. If I was able to wait then, I'm sure I'll be able to wait now.
Really hoping this comes soon with some s off action.

If you have Sprint then why are you guys even worrying about unlocking the bootloader in the first place? You would be returning your phone to Sprint and not sending it off to HTC.
Plus unlocking the bootloader (by any means) voids your warranty regardless... if you want custom roms unlock the bootloader, I'm already seeing an increase in battery from it.

Has there been any word from sprint or HTC about the status of the e3d bootloader on launch day?
it will be locked at launch which is not a problem. the problem is that it will be cryptographically signed at launch

well technically every phone is locked but the term locked/encrypted is used with one another so my question is about the encryption status at launch?
HTC has had almost a month from when they reversed their policy til launch. I was wondering if they are ready
I can't find the link, but I thought I read somewhere a week or so back on Android Central (maybe) that the 3D will ship encrypted then later on (who knows how long) HTC will offer a software update that will un-encrypt it so we can have access to the bootloader/nand and be able to write ROMs and Kernels.
I could be wrong, so take it with a grain of salt

why? they have already said they will unlock it. do you know how long it takes to get things done in the real world? they will have to create a tool or new bootloader that is switchable. these things need to be created and thoroughly tested before rolling out to avoid potentially bricking phones. not to mention all the red tape im sure they will have to go through with the carriers. it will happen, but i wouldnt guess within 30 days so you might as well just not buy it.
now the devs who got the dump with the engineering bootloader may get the phone unlocked within that time frame but thats a different story

exactly thats why i started a different thread trying to discuss the official unlocking vs unofficial. Unless this engineering leak really came from HTC to keep us happy why they try to do their thing.
But I for one would love to know what their plan is.

eh I should have been more specific i was referring to the samsung phones being pieces of crap I can wait for the unlocking no biggie there.
Depending on how the phone operates out of the box, I think I can wait however long it takes for them to unlock it. I don't use wireless tether hardly at all, and aside from that, that's the only reason I would need to root it. I prefer stock ROMs sometimes, as long as they're responsive. I can go with custom ROMs built to look stock if the stock ROM functions crappy.
I will tell you the status when I have the phone in my hands.... LOL

Fast Boot is enabled which is why the phone boots up so fast. When you power off the phone it is in hibernation and not completely shut down. Disable fast boot from menu>settings and you should be able to boot into it by pressing volume down and power.
right on - thanks unCoRrUpTeD.
S-ON as expected
A few people who got there's already have posted on here and other threads it may be locked pretty good.If this is true and IF HTC does not send a OTA out for it will you keep it after 29 days?
To me if it can't be rooted by week 2-3 back it goes to sprint i have no use for it if i can't MOD it.
why theMOD EDIT does everyone play the what if game.
htc said they will unlock them how about we just wait and see and stop saying what if this happens.
I'll still keep it. I know it'll be rooted eventually. I'm currently using a Hero, so the 3D will be a definite upgrade for me.

Im more concerned about the picture quality and battery life. I havent used my digital camera except a few times since me and my gf got the evo 4g. The 8mp cameras awesome. Yup, I'm too addicted to modding and flashing to cut it out cold turkey. The 3d is clearly a badass phone, with or without root. But for it to keep me happy, I need root. I'll give it the 29 days. If no root by then, I'd return it and go back to using my Evo, then wait and see if a root method is found for the 3d. I feel pretty confident that root will be found within that time frame though.
Anything at this point is just speculation. No one from the general public will have an EVO 3d in hand until Wednesday at the earliest.
If HTC actually plans to unlock this device, it's quite possible they are waiting until the actual release to provide the code or key. After all, what good is a key if the lock hasn't been made yet? I hope HTC provides the key publicly and not as an OTA or other update. Sprint likely would not let that fly, but it will take Sprint six months to pass it through testing if they did.
What other phone would I go to? The Nexus? If there was something out there maybe but nothing else will be here in time...or anything good anyway.
But this bad boy will be rooted. It might be a month from now but HTC will hold up there side of the bargain and give us root access.
If it can't be rooted it will be replaced. Give a dog a bone.
But it will be rooted no doubt. Have no worries friends!
well i am rather addicted to flashing roms and themes so i dont know that i would want a phone where i cant do that but im also into having a faster phone... sigh
I'll keep mine, preferably rooted; but if not, I still have another Og Evo.
We have an eng hboot. Its not about if, its about when.
seriously???? a) Do you go out looking to start [email protected]#? b) we have already had this thread with a poll even. c) HTC said the phone boot loader issue will be resolved. for a man taking sprints word who was told by HTC about no shortage issue you are now questioning HTC? WTF??
Not even sure why I waste my time responding to you.
Originally I was going to get 2, but with what looks to be a shoddy camera and not knowing when the bootloader will be unlocked, I'm going to get just one. If the one, stock, ends up being better then I feel it might be or it gets full root within a couple weeks, I'll get a 2nd. If not, I'll wait for the Galaxy S 2 and might even return the 1st EVO 3D.
It's going to boil down to how I feel about the one I get. If it's better then expected, I'll get #2. If not, and depending on how well it performs to my liking, I might keep it or get rid of it too b4 the 30 days are up.
To be honest, I'm really hoping it's better then what I think it's going to be because I really don't like Samsung phones.
I'll be keeping it. If full root isn't gained in that time frame, we might have a temp root, allowing us to at least run root apps and do some other things.
I'd probably kill it with fire.
hey guys just looking for some info i am bummed i have to get a new phone and i am guessing that it will come with the new hboot. does the power and volume down take you into hboot if your not rooted? if not how can i check if i got it. i read a little bit of the unlock for the new hboot in the one thread but all the posts kinda confused me does it actually unlock it i love the way i can just flash stuff on my phone through recovery now the other way seems to be a pain in the ass lol.
and is that unlock method for after the htc unlock? and if the phone comes with the new hboot will it come with the htc method? sorry for the ton of questions lol. just not entirely sure about the new stuff. just wanna be prepared for when phone comes tomorrow or next.
thank you in advance i know i will get the help i need from you guys
I wouldn't be so sure. If you are getting a new one, it probably wont be updated yet. If you are getting a reconditioned unit they updated it before they send it out.

What I'm thinking is with HBOOT 1.50 revolutionary won't work and there will have to be a completely different way to root, just like what Revolutionary did.
I was thinking that it might be pointless to crack 1.50 hboot for now with ICS coming soon right? Maybe they are holding of because it would be alot of work for nothing when its going to be updated. Correct me if im wrong hehe

i already got it and they had phone behind counter but i might have to take this one back cause the bottom lights flash on and off so i might try your method if i have to get another one
so i had this problem with my phone that about a 1 cm margin on the right side of my phone just doesnt respond and before you ask yes i factory reset and even went back to stock rom, but it just wouldnt fix it.
so had this problem for about one month and i got extremely annoyed with it ESPECIALLY because i got this phone when it came out so i still have more than a year left with this phone.
so i finally decided to give HTC an email about it.
they promptly responded with an email with a phone number for me to call and check on my warranty and talk about repairing my phone.
i called like a couple minutes ago and after like five minutes of staying in phone call limbo and listening to some catchy elevator music i got through to someone who sounded like she was tired because she slurred her words. it was not a bother for most of my friends talk like that. anyways back to the subject, i told them id numbers and told them that my LDI(liquid damage indicator) was white, which means no water damage. and she said
"well it seems everything is in order, your warranty is still in effect and we can replace your device's screen and you can have it back within two weeks for free you would just have to pay about ten dollars for shipping."
Eh i didnt care as long as i get this **** fixed. BUT THEN
i had to ask the question
what if i unlocked my bootloader?
she slowly responded with "well i'm sorry but that would void your warranty"
FUUUUUUUUUUU-
then i proceeded to ask her why, she said that if i sent in the device then more than just the screen would have to be replaced because they would have to get something with a locked bootloader. i asked how much...
$200 without shipping
well right now i am slamming my head into the wall for the unfortunate turn that happened.

dude! just make a cover up and re-lock your boot loader... they dont need access to anything to replace the screen.
its litterally like a couple screws, pull the phone apart, disconnect a ribbon cable, pull old screen out, put new in, and so on... (they dont need in your hboot)
so just lock it, call back, and tell them whats going on. dont mention anything about hboot/unlocking. just let them fly into it blind
i was thinking that but do you think that would work??
for some reason i think that it will leave type of footprint and then i get a call from HTC saying
"your device has had an unlocked bootloader, please fork up 200 bucks"
also another thing, do you think if i actually do that would it be safe to go back to stock rom, in case they test it and see the custom rom and sayWTFBBQSAUCE
F#$k that, send it without the battery and relock it lol

Well, most likely, your warranty would not be void due to your bootloader being unlocked regardless of what the rep told you. As long as rhe issue with the phone is a hardware issue, which yours certainly is, it should still be covered by the warranty unlocked or not..

Well with the new HTCDev unlocker tool. I am not so sure i want to root my phone just yet. From the videos i have watched you have to be connected to the net and have to receive a token during the root process. Could this possibly be a method that can void your warranty without a workaround? Would it be smarter to wait for a Dev community method?
I only ask this because, well i have the rooting/flashing itch. I am still funbling around with my phone and getting to know it. Yes people, i am one of those guys, the one who really misses the 4th menu button. So would it really be worth flashing while I am still getting used to the phone. Don't get me wrong the phone rocks even with 3 buttons, but is it worth rooting right away via the HTC Unlocker?
From what I understand, any root method will void your warranty. I have never had an issue getting a rooted phone replaced at Sprint. I always flashed a stock rom before taking it in.
Any root will void a warranty, HTC just has a way to track it with HTCdev. A community method just makes it easier to get away with..

Thx... appreciate the response, its exactly what was on my mind... Except my missing menu button..
Purchase insurance on your phone and you shouldn't have to worry about your warranty. I had my original Evo replaced after it had an unfortunate collision with a wall and the screen no longer worked. I took it into the Sprint store to try and get it repaired, but they told me they couldn't and to file a claim online. The next day, I had a 3D in my hands. My 4G was rooted with S-OFF, but of course they couldn't tell since the screen didn't work.
I am going to hold off for a while on Rooting. I have a feeling there will be a few OTA updates to fix minor things and don't want to have to go back and forth to get updates. I was 100% set on rooting until I found out that foxfi works out of the box! no need (for now) for me to root!
How did you install Foxfi? It says the app is not compatible with my 4G LTE and shows the phone greyed out.

Why would you have to go back and forth? Someone always releases a rooted stock rom within hours of it's release by HTC, all you would do is either flash that or wait for the developer of your rom to update to the new OTA. As for OTA's, if and when we have a root and s-off method it's not only possible but likely that you wouldn't be able to use it if you updated your phone. Within weeks of the s-off on the EVO 3D there was an OTA patching it. I haven't rooted yet but I wouldn't accept any OTA's just in case. I still may return my phone due to data issues.

You could still get the update even while rooted.
I'll probably give it 2 weeks to make sure the hardware is okay.
Need to root for some privacy apps.
I can hear Pandora/Facebook/Twitter sucking my contacts, web history, and phone number without my permission as we speak.
I used the HTC unlock method on my 3D and didn't hesitate to do it on my new Evo LTE. It was well worth it.
For what it's worth, I had to bring my 3D in to sprint to have the touch screen replaced when it randomly went bad and they never said anything about my phone having an unlocked bootloader... They don't care.

You have to go directly to foxfi to get the APK a google search will bring you there. It is not in the market. It works fine on my phone, now I wait for second round LTE then I can get better speeds.
Edit: found this, may help.

My og evo was rooted and I was very flash happy with it. But the last 6 months I had it I actually got sick of flashing (gasp). I think the constant need to re setup my phone just got old. As of now I have no plans of rooting it. I like it the way it is. I've gone "iphoney" and just want it to work lol.

I am going to hold off for a while on Rooting. I have a feeling there will be a few OTA updates to fix minor things and don't want to have to go back and forth to get updates. I was 100% set on rooting until I found out that foxfi works out of the box! no need (for now) for me to root!

Devs here are usually pretty good at baking in the ota's into their roms in a quick manner though.
