Prime at E3 - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So I had my appointment with nvidia today and they were showing off every tegra 3 game on a prime. They had about 4 on display and had two HTC one x phones there. It was nice to see.
I talked with a tech there who works on tegra 3. He says he has the prime as his main machine. And are quick to fix and problems that ate nvidia related. Other bugs are sent to google . And... Few stuff said off record... But nvidia loves the prime
Was also at a Hawken party and the game was being shown streaming on a prime via gaikai.
So plenty of love for the 201 here at e3

I'd love to hear the "off the record" stuff... I suspect it would give us some insight as to what is going Prime-wise.
For a flagship tablet from a company with a "Happiness 2.0" slogan, there's definitely something we're not being told.
I have to wonder how many developer resources Asus has working on the Prime...
Based on how slow they're being to get the Prime running properly (fyi, I'm very pro-Asus, or used to be at least, but we're 6-months in, that's not a trivial amount of time), it seems like either the problems they're trying to overcome are chronic design flaws, or they've shifted all their developer resources to new product development and only have a skeleton support crew working on the Prime.

Would like to say but he is a reader here.
He did say the 300 and 201 were pretty much the same internally so problems resolved on the 300 should be on the 201 once Asus releases the update which they can't control , minus the GPS and WiFi of course
And he never saw a GPS dongle til I showed it to him and was disappointed there was no power pass through . He was like eh. It's ok.

Prime is a great device(when you have a good one). SO i can easily see why its Nvidia favorite tablet. ALthough there are several other tegra 3 tabs out now, most major tech sites still consider the Prime the best out of all of them, despite some known issues affecting some primes. The prime was the tablet who started this new wave of technology like being the first quad core(really 5 core, 4+1) tablet and being most powerful and having the best battery life of any android tablet(acer owns that battery title now but prime with dock has longer battery life than it)

I love my prime too and through all benchmarks scores online it still wins in all. But the truth be told is that I expected more in terms of normal use.
I am talking about browser issues, games that slow down or force close and Nvidia (who I love for my graphics) where are the custom Nvidia themes for Tegra devices. I would love my prime to start with a "The way its meant to be played"
All I am saying the prime has the potential and Nvidia has the driver so looking forward to seeing what happens!

Is the original transformer still a good piece of electronic?
Or is it way outdated?
Wondering to save up the extra 340$ and buy a prime.
I will only use it for browser and note-taking, + some small apps.
Not really. Nothing against the first Transformer, but specially Tegra 2 is outdated. The Prime is much better and worth every cent.
Sure, it is still a good device. Just a slower processor, heavier, thicker and no super IPS.
I have a prime and an original transformer, and other than the awesome weight and feel of the prime, I like my original transformer better. In my opinion, the Prime was rushed out too early, and has too many flaws at the moment. My original transformer works brilliantly.
Is the original transformer laggy?
Yes ofc... TF101 isnt smooth and ui is often laggy... choppy animations etc.
Tegra 2 has not enough power with 1280x800 resolution. Prime with Tegra 3 is much better, better screen ips +, better cpu, gpu, camera with led, better speakers, aluminium, thiner, etc etc etc.

I think that if you focus on how "smooth" the UI is on the original Transformer, then you'll notice lag. If, however, you just USE the thing without focusing so closely, you'll find that it's actually a pleasure to use. I think the whole "laggy UI" thing is very much the result of the same kind of mentality that focuses so hard on artificial benchmarks. For example, I have a Motorola Photon that benchmarks slower than my Samsung Epic 4G Touch, but in actual use I don't notice a performance difference unless I squint.
That said, the thing about the Prime that I'm looking forward to is the extra brightness from the IPS+ screen so I can finally use the thing outside on my back porch (I live in SoCal, and the whole "Sunny California" thing isn't just marketing). To me, that's a more meaningful difference between the Prime and the original Transformer than any sort of "lagginess"...

it still is a great pad. I just put mine up on eBay today! Mines only 4 months old. I loved it. Plus its rooted. It will show on auction at 4pm eastern time
Don't have the Prime yet but the original tf is really good. The main flaws are video decoding and honeycomb ****ty browser but ICS should make it a really worthwhile.

Its funny people talk about tegra 2 being outdated, when there are not many programs for it. You can't even get apps like hbogo and maxgo to work on it. It doesn't matter to me whose fault it is. I have the galaxy 7plus and I can't get madden or nfs hot pursuit to work on it. Great hardware lousy support. Imagine the fewer tegra 3 apps out for this yet. Yes I'm ranting.

hbogo works perfectly on my tegra2 Motorola Atrix4g. I have it. it wouldn't show up in marketplace for the prime though. I might try emailing the apk from my phone to the prime and see if it'll install that way.
for basic use, it's perfectly fine, just a little chunkier and heavier.
the prime is more future proof though being newer hardware, but it really comes down to what you're going to use it for.
Depending on what you want to do with it, the TF101 is still a perfectly useful tablet. I gave my old TF to my woman and she uses the crap out of it. She uses it primarily as a media consumption device with light gaming and occasional note-taking in class.
Just because there's a newer version out doesn't automatically make the previous model obsolete. If a device works for you and does everything you need it to do...why chase after anything else?

I have both, and intended to wipe my TF and give it to the Mrs. and keep the TFP.
I am now seriously considering taking the TFP back and getting another TF.
Im not impressed with the TFP at all. I honestly feel that the TF is less laggy, and since I dont use it to play games (use it almost exclusively for remote office) the TF has served me very well with its dock.
If I cant get a TFP dock by the end of the week, I will be returning it.

Based on your stated use you are absolutely fine, even if you go a good deal further you are still absolutely fine. The only reason other than some aesthestics and the I can beat an IPAD reasoning is the price difference. If you are paying 399 versus 499 you should probably get the prime. If you are getting it for less which it looks like get the original.

Time to "Downgrade" to TF101?

I've had my Prime for about 4 weeks, Friday is the day I need to return to Amazon, unless I can get an extension from Amazon. EDIT: Just talked with Amazon, they won't extend my return period. (My Prime was as Asus for a week, but they just tested it. And I was hoping for a fix for WiFi before I had to return it.)
My WiFi throughput is weak on the Prime. Both Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and HTC Flyer have better WiFi, the Galaxy 10.1 is by far better.
I don't play games, and was thinking of returning the Prime and getting something the performs better on WiFi, perhaps the original Transformer, TF101.
I thought I would post here, since many of you have experience with both the TF101 and TF201, and see what you might suggest.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Why go back to an older model?
Though I suffer a random reboot maybe once a day, I plan to keep my prime to see what the Asus team says.
However, I do plan on buying my wife *cough* more for me prob *cough* the Toshiba Excite X10 when that comes out later in the month. That one looks real interesting as well IMO.
Prime or nothing.
I would not buy another Tegra 2 today. Prime is much better.

No games out there are dedicated to the Prime, most of them will run on Tegra 2 based tabs. By the time the new games come out, they will probably be optimized for HD 1080 or 720p screens and quadcores which means Prime owners have to wait for the rest of the Android market to catch up.

That is COMPLETELY wrong. Completely. There are Tegra 3 optimized games.
First of all there is Glowball, something NO Tegra 2 tablet can run.
Secondly, when you play games like Shawdowrun HD, Riptide, and Shinerunner the quality of graphics is improved on Tegra 3 devices.
Even better, in the Tegra Zone there is a pile of stereoscopic 3D games that will play in 3D on a 3D TV if you hook up your Prime. Just last night I was playing Riptide in 3D on my Samsung 3D plasma, something NO Tegra 2 device can do.

Bull. The Tegra 2 sucks. Outright sucks.
First of all, the GPU is too weak for the resolution of Android tablets. Even with Tegra 2 games the Prime plays the games MUCH smoother. Tegra 2's GPU was meant for WVGA resolutions not 720p+. The Tegra 2 is SPANKED by not only the Tegra 3 but also the Mali in the SGS2 and the iPad 2' GPU.
Simply put, if you want smooth gameplay, Tegra 2 is simply not a good option.
Then there are the other problems with Tegra 2- NO high profile h264 support (so FORGET playing mkvs in hardware mode), NO NEON support (when MANY apps optimize for NEON because quite simply every other major SoC- including Tegra 3- has NEON support), and a lower per-core clockspeed.
I can understand someone not wanting the Prime because of issues, but lets not pretend the original is something it is not.
Buying a TF101 today is like buying a freaking brand new Pentium D desktop- it was fine in its day but nowadays the alternatives are MAGNITUDES faster. In particular, the Prime is at least three times faster than the TF101.
The better solution is to wait for other Tegra 3 tablets. Pretending Tegra 2 is still a good value in 2012 doesn't help anyone. There is a reason Tegra 2 ended up being the low-end of the last generation of dual-core SoCs.

Nice infomercial.
If people are looking for alternates or something to hold them over until something different comes out there are two deals going on now...
1) Staples is discontinuing the OG Zoom and selling them for $249. Accessories are 75% off too. It has ICS. It's only available in store and they're hard to find.
2) Costco has the 16GB G-Tab w/rebate in-store only for $389. That includes the OEM Samsung case.

The Prime is WAY better for video decoding as it supports NEON instructions
I like my prime a lot better then my tf101... Like pretty much every new android device I have ever had phones including the first 3 to 8 months of its life is buggy until the developers work it all out, they are slow. The original tf101 was also plagued with issues when it first released and honestly still has some. I sold mine to a friend for 200 a couple weeks ago. It should be getting ICS this month so it should get better...should...
But even my phones that are android based have all had their problems. The best ones are the ones that got a good open source developer making custom roms that work great. I am running a vibrant and a mytouch with custom roms and they are awesome. I cant wait till Asus releases the bootloader unlocked.
There is sooo much you can do with software man. I'm amazed how good the prime runs right now. Its the first tegra3 quad core device (drivers will get much better) and its one of the first ICS devices, which also isnt perfect yet. The bootloader will be unlocked soon...
Yes the aluminum case isnt optimal for radio signals. But in my case all radio related stuff works just fine (even GPS when i'm outside - i get a fix in under 1min). What i want to say there are some hardware limitations but overall i'm sure in 6months EVERY aspect of the Prime will be much improved.
I witnessed that on my past 2 phones. You should compare my DHD from when I first bought it with stock&branded Froyo/Sense 2.0 firmware, to now with a Custom rom and Gingerbread 2.3.5/Sense 3.5. Its like a completely new phone. Battery life is almost doubled for example.
But the OP is right. If you want a device with good software you should not buy a completely new device. But does that justify buying an older phone/tablet? For me i dont think so. I think its much better to look for popular devices that will likely have a big community and many devs. And of course are unlockable. Thats why i know the Prime is an awesome device. I'm sure devs will do great things with it

Hey guys -
Since the Prime has been out for a few months, and it seems like the unlocking tool is out. You guys think it is a good buy to pick one up? My GF has my XOOM and she uses it for school now, and it leaves me tabletless. I heard there were many issues when this device first came out, are the issues still there? Also, is there anything else in the foressable future (1-2 montsh) that will be the
"prime killer". Thanks guys.
I would say go for it. Just buy it from a store where you have a return policy so if you dont like it you can return it.

I would recommend buying one. I know lots of people have had issues but I have tested mine thoroughly, everything works as I would expect and I used it for an overseas holiday with the only issues being app specific problems. I don't think you will see the new Prime out for at least 3-4 months. The new Galaxy tab might be out sooner but that is pure speculation.
There were some people here who had problems. As usual when a new device hits the stores. Happenes to all devices, iphone, galaxy S2, Nexus... Thats how it is with our current production technology.
Most people here are very happy though, including myself. I've not had a single issue since I bought it a month ago. GPS is working, but best lock I was able to get was ~30m. No problem though because i only enabled Gps to test if it works, i will probably never enable it again ;D
Wifi/BT is perfect. The screen is beautiful, the dock is awesome, HDMI out is a blast, everything is smooth, battery life ... it just wont run out of juice man! Would buy it again any day. And with the unlocked bootloader, i'm sure everything will get even better from here on.
There will be no prime killer in next few months. Plus prime only just came out at end of December/early January. PRIME HAS NO EQUAL AND DESTROYS THE COMPETITION
In the next few months I will think so. I'll have expected Samsung to have announced their A15 cored (dual core or quad core doesn't matter, still better than quad core A9) tablets with a really beefy GPU, by then.
Moreover the ipad 3 would have come out already with quad A15 cores and an even better gpu than the sgx 543.
So yeah I'd recommend you hold out.
I will say this though. If you do hold out you're going to be missing out on a sexy tablet that transforms into a netbook.
dont be worried about all the people complaining 90% of people are happy with their prime and the 10% that arent happy with thrs just sit thr nd cry about it go for it and you wont regret it!!!!!!

that's what I was thinking... I know I could always wait for the "next best thing" and I'll always be waiting. However, If there is new tech on the horizon and the tablets are said to be cheaper what's a few months? Although the prime is a sexy beast. I held off initially when I saw complaints, price and what not. I'll keep an eye out.

I've had my prime for over a month now and I use it daily for school and leisure. If you're a student this device is perfect, I've had minor quirks here and there, I've only suffered two lockups/reboots, and my gps works but barely. Otherwise it blows everything else out of its sphere...I could not see myself satisfied with any other tablet at this point (I'm interested in the iPad 3 though to be honest).

First off I dont know any quad core netbooks. Thats not really a good description. Second, if your always gonna worry about whats coming out in a few months as far as technology goes, dont ever buy anything again as long as you live.

Waaa? It's not even about always worrying about what's coming out in the next few months. It's about being smart and buying the next gen/this year hardware. Which is pretty much coming out next month with the ipad 3 and hopefully samsung.
As far as I am concerned quad core A9 is a technologically backwards move by nvidia. To me it's akin to buying a Intel quad core duo in this day and age.
But anyways ill stop here since I seem to be hitting a nerve here.

Updates to continue?

Hey everyone, my prime will be delivered tomorrow and I am extremely excited, but after being on the forums and hearing about the new tablets asus will be announcing I began to worry about my investment.
I'm beginning to worry about whether the prime will continue having steady upgrades and ultimately a jump to the next android OS. What do you all think?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yes it will continue to be sold and supported. we actually have an update that should be coming between now and next week sometime(i hope what i was told holds true). Asus has the best firmware support when it comes to updates n such. so there should be no worries on that part. plus with developer support here in xda, you in good hands.
I honestly don't want to think anything as that would be spreading rumors.
However, if the TF300T and maybe TF700T firmwares will be mostly compatible with the TF201, then there shouldn't be any problem.
The TF101 is still very well supported by Asus. In my opinion, Asus provides hands down the best, and most timely, ongoing support. They're awesome in that regard.
PS - my Prime and dock was delivered today and is waiting at my house. Really excited!!

All you have to do is take a look at what is happening with the original Transformer which has been out for over a year now. The Prime was released several months ago yet the 1st gen is still getting updates (including ICS). So you shouldn't really be worried about this at all. Like others have said ASUS is really good about keeping their products up to date as far as software goes.

Man, that's some terrible build quality if you can't remove the dock from your Prime...
I've owned my prime for 6 hours and love it! Got it from amazon, I haven't found a single issue yet. Its a C3. The more I read about asus, the more convinced I am their support goes above and beyond others. Enjoy!

ah hah..lol its a stud then? told you
Sorry OP, we're going off topic here, but my 30 minute impression after owning the Prime...
Hardware-wise, this thing exudes quality in a way the 1st gen Transformer could never dream of. Really, really awesome. Keyboard and trackpad are substantially improved as well. Device performance is definitely making a good first impression.
Super happy so far. After jumping on the original Transformer at launch, I was thinking I'd skip the Prime and wait for the next generation. Well, I guess I got bored. Plus I was really in love with the Prime's style in a way that the upcoming 700 couldn't quite match. Went with the Champagne by the way, not as big a fan of the amethyst or whatever it's called, which I looked at in a local Best Buy.
I've got a firmware update pestering me but I'm going to hold off until I do a bit more reading on the current situation. I understand the latest firmware isn't rootable, and I'm not yet sure I'm ready to void my warranty with the Asus unlock.
Anyway, glad to be aboard!
Total stud so far, thanks for the encouragement to go for it! I even had gps lock in the house! We have 2 wifi routers, so I can't imagine a wifi problem. Will venture to the yard tomorrow and see how far I can get. Gotta figure out what else to try on it. Pinball was fun :-D ohhh, and the screen is amazing. I'll be able to read at park and waiting for kids ball this summer with no problem. I need sunglasses for the super ips+!

Totally agree about the screen. In addition to brightness, I'd say the TF201 has a bit of an advantage in clarity and contrast over the TF101 as well - which I consider to have a very good screen. I was always really impressed with the TF101's screen, even compared with my Galaxy Nexus which blows it out of the water in terms of pixel density, black levels, and color saturation.
This is fun!

New transformer, is it worth it?

I am currently thinking about replacing my transformer with a transformer prime, is it worth it or I will hardly notice any difference?

If you must have a quad-core why not the TF300T, its cheaper Wifi and GPS works and you probably wont feel as bad if it does not perform well.
I have the Prime and I can tell you now that the performance is not what you will expect from a quad core and not worth it for the premium price.
I own both and love my prime, It's so much thinner and sexier looking. hehe It does have it's fair share of QC issues, so I would read through the forum to learn about the most common ones. I've had two and decided to settle on this 3rd as it only has a little backlight bleed but I have yet to see a prime(and I've seen about 6 of them including the 2 I had and 1 I have now) or a tf 101(and I owned a few of them too 1 16GB model 1 32GB model and a replacement 32gb model) that had ZERO backlight bleed. I mean absolutely none. And I noticed on two of my primes on a side angle the screen washes out, or appears to have a glow to it compared to the tf 101. but yes, overall it's much better than the tf101.
Thanks for your replies!
I guess I really would like a quad core tablet that could use my dock, so prime is the way to go right?
Thanks again...

prime is the way to go. I have a great working one. well worth it. some have issues but not the case with all primes, like some like to make it seem like.
prime has its own dock though. you can't use any new transformer tablet with old tf101 dock. every tablet has its own matching dock. you get a prime. you will have to buy dock made for prime. you buy a 300, you will need dock for 300 model. not interchangeable. prime dock rocks though. you can get 18hrs. rated battery life with prime n dock combined. real life it like 16hrs. depends on usage. its possible to pull 18+hrs.
I would hold off on the prime until the galaxy note 10.1 drops to see how it compares. So far most devices with Tegra3 haven't been all that.

Honestly I would stay away from the prime. I have one of the latest and despite the recent updates I would consider it flawed. The weak wfi and crappy gps I could not recommend this at all.
Add another vote for wait, there are way to many possible better options right now and in the near future. I would most certainly hold off until after this update to see if it fixes things. So far the main things the prime can do that my OG transformer couldn't is some games, the screen and play mkv out of the box. But playing video on my tab will cause it to reboot. Lastly, if possible check out windows 8 see if this appeals to you because this will be another option.
Also my prime has never out performed my original transformer (other than what I mentioned above) OC'ed running the Revolver roms HC or ICS. Just my 2 pennies.
It's worth it imo. I have one of the early BC models and I love it! Check out the Positive Tranformer Prime thread I have linked on my signature. Good place to start at. Most of everyone is quite happy with there TF201s.
Currently Prime aren't so great on the current firmware and if u have to wait for the next one, u might as wait for the Galaxy Note 10.1 too.
Sooner or later someone will do a Galaxy S III vs Prime video and the results probably won't be pretty to Asus users but I imagine it tells u what the Note 10.1 would do.
Simply put... do your own research & test it out at retails stores if possible. Reading reviews or getting recommendation from forum isn't the way to go with Transformer Prime. Simply put, do your own research (including other tablets) & decide what is best for you.
As for Transformer Prime, you will either hate it or love it. There are Primes with issues (not just s/w but I'm talking about h/w) & there are Primes without any issue (or just satisfactory to each individuals standard). It is 50/50 (I'm being generous here although.. I could just as be bias as I am frustrated with my Prime) in ratio/percentage.... & you are seriously taking a risk. However, if you purchase a Prime without any issue... it really is a nice device (at least in theory to me as I have Prime with issues).

The prime is a joke compared to a SIII. The note 10.1 is listed for pre order on Nergi's site but still doesn't list the chip. My next Tab will have Exynos power in it 100%

Its hard to get an accurate pic from research or even playing around from one or two store test units.
So many people report so many problems yet so many responses coming back with fixes, also possibility of further firmware updates, hardware duds etc.
The volume of complaints is definitely off-putting and personally I don't see any advantage in 1080p screen @ 10" size, just drags down performance so I can't see the pixels anymore if I squint, big whoop. Heck I think the 1080p screen in my 15" laptop is overkill lol.
Well guys, thanks a lot!
Anyway, I am thinking about buying prime because of dock as it is very useful for me.
Do you have any idea if there will be any tablet with dock besides transformer?

if you mean other than asus, yes. BUT it will be a while before it is seen. its more so on the win8 front of other tablet makers coming out with a keyboard dock. no releases anytime soon for competing manufacturer tablets with docks.
Its your call. Asus is leading the pack right now on the Android tablet front with Nvidia's tegra3. Whether Android or the upcoming win8 tablets. 300 is fine. Prime is fine. Infinity pad will be fine. all have tried and proven keyboard dock solutions which add extra versatility and extra battery life. it turns prime into almost a whole new beast. Once i got my keyboard dock for my prime, i could now see what all the hype was over it. the dock is a must have. plus it functions as a stand for your prime also
Tegra3 is where its at right now.
Just check out the thread link in my sig called Positive Transformer thread, and you will see testimonials of Happy prime owners. Its just the flip side to those with issues. Everything needs balance.
good luck with deciding. Like others have said, DECIDE FOR YOURSELF
prime is sexier, no doubt.
300 is more functional and quite a bit faster at less expense.
Overall if you upgrade to a 300 i dont think you would be dissapointed. Prime is nice but really for what you will notice, 300 is better i think. YMMV
