I bought a 32gb micro SD card on eBay, I tried formatting it in my 3vo and it gave me an error about vfat file system... When I tried to copy my files to the card it shows them all on my computer but when I put it in my phone only some of the files show....like 15MB out of 8GB...
I assume I need to form the card to a different file type? Fat32?
I have since been refunded for the card and the seller said not to mail it back...so I am hoping there is a fix for this.... Any help would rock!

It could be fake. I read an article and saw a tool to check. Ftr I bought a 32gb from newegg.com for $60. Ilk check my laptop for the link to the article

No, its cool, I appreciate the help. I ended up downloading an SD card tester on the market and it came back as: fake or damaged. I guess I'm even anyway since I was issued a refund... The guy has 100% since like 2005, in sure he is looking to keep that....

glad i could help, because this community has always been there for me
even if i was silent. 7 phones later and this place rocks.
Getting this message for some reason, and can't find a resolution. Copying my important stuff off now, then will probably reformat with the phone.
It started when I put the card in the replacement 3VO I ordered, because my first one was acting funny. About half a day later it game me the SD message, (sent it right back). Ever since I put it back in my first one it's been giving me that message.
Anyone have any ideas? Is my SD actually just going bad? Is it a corrupt file? Something entirely different?
Thanks to anyone who can help me get this figured out. Been searching Google since, but haven't found anything really relevant to the Evo 3D.

Hard to say, but you're doing the right thing coping everything off and then reformatting. My suggestion would be to also reformat it in the phone too. If this still happens, try another sdcard in the phone so you know for sure if it's the phone or the card.
Ok. Just went through with it. Seems like it's good so far. Didn't format it on the PC, just the phone, then reset the phone, then copied only my original stuff back on. So far so good. I'll add another reply in a couple days stating whether or not it holds up.

i've had the same issue with an aftermarket class 6 8GB sdcard I used in my EVO for a year. my experience has been once you start getting errors with an sdcard, they are on their last leg.
i would look into getting a replace or have a spare, just to be prepared, as its rough modifying your phone w/o an sdcard! too bad there isnt a tool which could give us more detail on the life/reliability of the sdcard!
hope it all works out!
i had the same problem....i do not think it is the sdcard
i believe the software is forgetting parts of the sdcard and sending the error.
it happened to me on my 16gb class 10
also happened on my wife's evo 3d with the stock card.
FIX: only fix i found is to get all info off with your pc then format the card and load everything back on through the phone or pc.
if anyone knows more i would like to know.
So far so good here. Took everything off my card, formatted it in the phone, put my stuff back on, and everything seems ok. Seems like if you just take your card out and toss it in another phone that'll happen. Didn't have that issue between my Hero and this one, so I'm not sure what the issue was.

I have has so many screen lockups with my X2 (screen is unresponsive but the physical buttons work), then it comes back with in 1 min or so. I SBF'd the new GB build and left it COMPLETE stock Rooted. NO bloat removed or anything. took out my 8 gig SD card and used Internal memory.
my X2 ran so freaking nice yesterday. fast, responsive, NO freezes and i used it allot all day. This morning, after charging, i rebooted, then when i got to work, i reinserted my 8 gig class4 SD card (i also used a 32gig card and got freezes as well) and within 15 min BOOM i got my first lock up surfing.
i am conviniced that it eaither has to do with the SD card slot itslef, or maybe the X2 does NOT like certian "class" cards?
i would love to see any of you who are getting lockups with screen unresponsive issues to try this and see if you get the same results? i was also getting freezes and lockups with ecliplse ROM when i ran a custom rom.
thoughts???
Interesting thoughts. I'm running a Lexar 16 GB class 6 card with no issues.
My phone doesn't lock up per se. What it does do sometimes is while surfing, the lock screen flashes and goes right back. Every once in a while I actually have to slide to unlock. Is this what you're talking about? Happens stock and rooted. I do use app called no lock and figured thats the problem.
it jsut seems way to strange that it ran perfect all day, the last time i used it with the SD card it was freezing all the time...
seems VERY fishy

nope. the screen just hangs there...forzen on what ever you were doing last. the only thing that works, is the physical buttons on it...then it comes back

yep, but it does not only happen when im surfing.....
I have a patriot LX 32GB class 10 micro sdhc card and I haven't had any of these problems while surfing stock or my main browser opera.
Although my X2 did kill my old Lexar 32GB class 10 microSD card upon a low battery shutdown.
killed it? really? what happend? it just fried?
it is just so strange that not one lock up then as soon as i inserted it within 15 min lock up....
if this issue would get resolved i would honestly keep this phone..but if it keeps happening, i might move to the bionic
My X1 killed an SD card too, that is how I got my X2... Verizon caught an earful. I can't remember for the life of me what brand of SD card it was, but I got it with my Storm 2 in 2009 when I came back to the US.
I have never had any issues with my x2 locking up, stock or otherwise.

After the shutdown hooked up to charger and SD card would not mount.... at all. Took out and tried it on all 6 of my computers (Windows, Linux, Mac) all tried to mount the card... nothing.
IMO 32gb micro-SDHC cards just aren't as reliable as their big brothers. Just recently I was going nuts trying to figure out why Titanium Backup was freezing up -- guess what, bad SD card. Had a 32gb Class 10 card that worked fine since about Easter in the phone, and SDFormatter took 3 hours to "reformat" it. I decided to toss it and went back to a 16gb Class 10. So far, not a single hiccup.

I think you are on the right track; although I believe it also depends on the brand of the card. Almost everything I buy memory wise is Patriot and I am very happy with them. I only bought the Lexar card because at the time it's the only class 10 microSD that my local computer store had.

Nah, I said on the other page it was the one that came with my Storm 2. They didn't give me a new SD card when I upgraded last October. So I used it in my X1 and that is how I got my X2. I am a very influential individual when it comes to Verizon. Almost every phone upgrade on all 4 of my lines have been free in one way, shape, or form Me, paid for Storm 1, got 2 free, paid for X1, free to X2. My mom Eris to Inc 2 for free, my brother OG Droid to X1 AND X2 free. I don't ever settle for the bare replacement.

Anyone can help me to fix my 4gb sd card?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
If you can't format it i should't get much hopes. If you mean to recover the Data there are several PC Software to do that.
It happened to me a long ago, I could neither format it nor rescue any data T.T
As has been said, try to rescue the data, but I can't promise nothing...
If you have the ticket, maybe you're in warranty to get a new one..
And one advice, do regular security copies, it will save you in case of a new SD card death...
Yes, its a sad day when one of these cards dies.
I've got a 32 GB Kingston card right in front of me now that's dead. I didn't think about a warranty, I need to check on that. Was fixin to just toss it in the trash but hate to let go of it.
I've run every diagnostic/repair software out there I can find and nothing touches it. Card just is not recognized in my PC or any device. Stone cold dead.
A friend told me to put it in the freezer for a couple hours, then thaw it out and try it. But that makes no sense to me.
well if you can't format it through the pc it's dead....just replace it...if your pc can barely use it then you might have a chance to get your files...if nothing happens when plugged in then throw it away..
This is a known defect in our phones. but sadly uneducated people here blame the cards. I've gone through 4 very costly cards. u just gotta do backups. until you get a new phone.
However, another issue with the phone is the bluetooth stack. if you're connected to a headset then get into your brand new bluetooth 2012 Rogue*don't ask me why I bought that crap*... If you're listening to music.... it crashes. gotta restart the phone to function again.
I've attempted recovering it. I know exactly how to recover things... Well, couldn't recover a single file. Everything is completely scrambled. Our phones also have a fragmentation issue. wonder if that is what is causing the issue?
Umm know defect for our phone is not correct. Myself and many other users have had no issue with Sd cards. I have a 32gb class 10 Samsung and I've had zero issues. Also had a 16gb class 6 as well with zero issues.

Just because you've had no issues doesn't mean there isn't an issue. Any Electronic Engineers in this forum other than myself that actually knows how the technology works? Just wondering. Most people at XDA know nothing about the hardware of the phones. You guys just play around with the software. Look at the failure rate of cards. It's funny that I've never have had a card in my life that has ever failed until I got an HTC 3D. Then again it does happen once in a while. But What type of failure? That's what everyone on here doesn't understand. You guys just replace the cards and don't try to figure out why it happened. Because it is hardware related and you guys are software guys.
I'm a software guy huh ?? LOL and according to recent post I just replace Sd cards huh ?? LOL. Well let me inform you I haven't ever stated it wasn't an issue, I posted its not a known issue. Also you should never assume as to what it is members do because ya really don't know. As far as these statistics you mention on HTC EVO 3d sd card failure rate I haven't seen any. Also I have not ever had to replace an Sd card with either of my android/HTC phones. I only chose to upgrade them to faster cards with more storage. The prior Sd cards "stock" are still functional. The upgraded cards are performing as they should. Also you when you post "most people at xda know nothing about the hardware of the phone" Ahhh man you gotta be kidding me right ??? Lmao you can't be serious with that. You do remember what xda is about right ??? Once again dude never assume what someone knows or doesn't know because the fact is you don't.

Not trying to get in the middle of anything here but one point I want to clarify is that this card I was talking about that is dead has never been in my Evo 3D.
So at least my Evo 3D had nothing to do with it dying.
I am running a 64gb sxhc card now for 3 months and having absolutely no problems. (formatted to FAT32).
Bought a 32 GB class 10 card by Samsung FROM EBAY......
Never again am i doing that. turns out the seller was selling fake cards, lost all my data in my old card as i forgot to make a backup and instead just copied everything to the new card Cards completely gone and my laptop wont even recognise it anymore.

I have the 16 gb s4 and its great an all that we have a micro sd slot but I have found the whole concept unreliable at best. For one I have had 2 different sd cards fail. One gskill 32gb class 10 and a samsung 64 gb fail. All my pictures, roms and app gone. I back them up but still not being able to trust them is a huge concern. And the 64 gb seemed like a great idea except you have to format it fat32 to get recovery to view it, and when I did that my phone constantly wanted to format it back exfat. I pretty much have no option to get a 32 gig with a mdk rom either. Just my rant as I figure out how to rma both of these cards.

Sounds like you've just had some bad luck. I've been using a 64gb Class 10 SanDisk formatted for exFat and it's worked fine so far (I even use Folder Mount to move a bunch of stuff from internal to external).
Surprised the Samsung card failed on you.
Btw, the exfat/64gb issue only exits for some implementations. I'm running Barebones ME7 rom w/ktoonsez kernel and Phils/CWM recovery and both the recovery and the kernel support 64gb exFat.

I'm using a sanDisk Ultra 64GB on my S4 and everything works fine (FAT32 formatted)
I've never had any SD card fail me. Never heard of gskill and there is the possibility that the samsung sd card you got was a fake...depending on where you got it. I've used PNY, Samsung, and SanDisk sd cards and all have lasted me a long time through heavy usage.
I have a 64 gig sd card and never had an issue. I use it all the time.
first thing I did was wipe and format it in twrp recovery to whatever format it wanted.
golden.
Two cards failing? Unbelievable bad luck (I have never had a storage device of any type fail...not even platter hard drives...and I'm 43 and have had my own pc of some sort for 25 years), a bad card reader in the phone, or operator error.
I'm thinking bad card reader in the phone.

I had an almost identical issue a while back. I used to always use a Sandisk 32gb class 10 card in my S3 and other devices. I used the same card for 3 or 4 years. When I got my S4 I decided to make the jump to a 64 gb card due to the small internal storage. So I went out and bought a 64 gb Class 10 Sandisk since I have always had good experiences with their cards. First thing I popped it into my computer and re-formatted it to Fat32. Then I plugged it into my phone and it seemed to work fine for a while, then randomly it would unmount itself and remount for no apparent reason. It would do it randomly 3 or 4 times a day. I tried wiping and reformatting to fat32 again, tried exfat, and even NTFS. Failing all that I took it back and exchanged it for another identical one. Same EXACT issue... So I gave it one last shot and exchanged one more time. At this point the ladies at Wal-mart are looking at me sideways like I'm running a scam or something. Lol. Anyways, the third one worked spectatularly. I haven't had one single unmount with it and I have all the storage I could possible need. I keep two Nandroid backups on my memory at all times (and with the S4 they are HUGE, 4gbs or better) and I have like 15 gbs of music, not to mention other miscellaneous files and apks and such, and I still have 30 gbs left.
I say just try it again man. Third times a charm. And I personally would always recommend Sandisk. I have never had one fail me and lost my data or anything. They have always worked for me.

Did you format back to Fat32 on your third try? I am going through the same thing and I am on my second card, waiting for the third to come in the mail. The first one I did Fat32 and out of the blue it would get extremely hot, and then say safe to remove card without me doing anything.
The second one, I left as is, copied everything over and left it exFat. That lasted about a week and then stuff started disappearing in gallery view, BUT it was there in Root explorer. The card it a Sandisk 64 gb Mobile Ultra.

Yeah mine was the same issue, only I didn't notice any heat to speak of. And yes on the first card I got, I used a windows program called fat32format and formatted it before ever even putting it in my phone. It would intermittently unmount and remount exactly as you are describing. So I took it out, wiped and reformatted to fat32 again. Still did the same thing. So as a last ditch I tried formatting to exfat. My phone and recovery both read the card just fine, it would just unmount randomly, or when I was either listening to music or viewing my gallery (something that required high read speeds) and it would unmount and interrupt it. So, thinkiing that it was just a faulty card I exchanged for a identical new one. Same issue. This time I used a different program to reformat to fat32, I forget the name of it, but it was a command line based reformatting tool for windows. I used it and had that same problem even after several reformats. At this point I was starting to wonder if it was a problem with my phone's SD card slot., So as a last effort I did one more exhange, reformatted using the command line tool and haven't had one single unmount since then, and I have ALOT of stuff on it. I would just suggest keep trying. I think that Galaxy phones are just sensitive to card reading and if you don't have an absolutely perfect one it will have problems. Or who knows, maybe I just had that off chance of one in a million by getting two bad cards in a row. Either way, I would suggest reading this thread (if you haven't already): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735
Use the first method on your new card. That I think is the most foolproof formatting method. Good luck, you will find the right card eventually.
Thank you!! Ill give it a shot tomorrow when the new card arrives. I appreciate that thread reference too! Fingers are crossed.

Yeah no problem. Good luck
There may be a pattern....
But I am not sure exactly what it is.
I have two nearly identical SG4s (1 for + 1 for my wife) and both have the 64GB SanDisk Micro Ultra. One phone is completely stock (my wife's) and the card is lightly used and formatted exFat. Mine is rooted and Roomed (Synergy) with TiBkup and CWM. Like other folks, I had to reformat the card to Fat32 in order to work with CWM.
As far as I can tell, she never sees any un-mount/re-mount messages on her phone but it is lightly used and she might not notice. I DO see occasional un-mount/re-mount messages, but I cannot tie it to a specific program or event. Sometimes happens right after reboot. Sometimes happens when I launch TiBkup. But goes for days with no issues.
I have never lost any data or noticed any performance hits, but now I am worried that I might.
Guess it is time to take more backups of the backups...
I have had lots of computer equipment fail over the years, but never exactly like this...
Well I followed everything nicholi2789 suggested and low and behold my card is actually working good. It does not get hot when reading ( not as hot as the other 2 anyway) and I can see a big time difference in speed. So I guess its true, the third times a charm in the case of these 64 gb Sandisk Ultra cards.
Big thanks again to nicholi2789 for pointing me in the right direction!
I bought a SanDisk Microsdxc class 10 64gb and let the phone format. It's working great. It has the fastest speeds out of all I've seen.
It's a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
At Amazon.

Glad you figured it out man. I didn't really do anything except to say keep trying. Lol. Good deal though.
