how do i backup my csc file and modem files? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Was wondering on how could I backup my csc and modem file before rooting just in case something happens.
something like tar files so that odin could flash it back.

Not an expert, but rooting should not change that (OK READ UP A BIT MORE... You don't have to ROOT before you will be able to flash custom ROM - just use ODIN to flash new ones).
Files posted here. It it does not work, just flash back your "original" version:

[Q] flashing back a stock rom

i'm on my KF1 stock rom, and i want to experiment on different roms.
1) are all custom roms (e.g lite'ning, cognition, darky) flashable using CWM? (i got my CWM from flashing the mirage kernel). or i can use odin anytime if i want to flash them thru the computer?
2) i searched for the forums for my stock rom, and i found a link:
http://www.multiupload.com/U95BI5QVDL
it's in an .exe format. is that flashable too thru CWM, or i have to use Odin to flash it back if ever i want to revert back to my stock rom? isn't flashble stuff in .tar or .md5 format?
The one you found is correct and it has to be extracted from .exe format via Winrar/7Zip. Then you will get .tar file which you could flash via Odin.
And I think you can flash any Custom ROM via Odin over any ROM.
Regards.
do i flash the stock rom under the PDA tab only, just like flashing a kernel? i don't have to tick any other options (bootloader, phone, csc, etc)?

[Q] Odin Questions

Hello Forum,
I have downloaded ODIN for flashing and recovery, and as of the moment I have the Samsung Galaxy 5 (USA) Model. Now, I have previously flashed and recovered stock with it but I don't know which files do what.
I have a PIT file, a BOOTLOADER, and a PDA file. Could someone give me a depth description of what each one does? I doubt I'm suppose to use all three all the time in case I've bricked my device or flashing.
Thanks in advance.
PIT stands for Partition Information Table. It basically tells odin how big each partition is, how their arranged, etc. It doesn't contain the actual contents of those partitions, just how they're laid out on the drive.
The PDA file is your actual system image, and is usually compressed as a .tar (or tar.md5) file. It will contain a kernel and one or more partition images which contain the actual contents of the partitions that're described in the .PIT file.
To flash with Odin (or Heimdall, for that matter) you need a .pit and one or more partition images. I'm not too sure how you'd use the separate bootloader file in Odin. I'm still something of a n00b at this.

You actually don't need a .pit file to flash with odin. All you need is the .PDA file. I believe the .pit file is only for if you want to re-partition the drive as well. Forgot to mention make sure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked when flashing in odin with a .pda file or you will brick your device.
Thank you guys for that, I figured more or less what you are saying. I just needed confirmation! :good:
Using Odin to flash the TerraSilent Kernel
I would like to flash TerraSilent Kernel 1.3.5 for Galaxy 4.0 (YP-G1) USA. I have downloaded Odin3 v1.7, and would just like to confirm the steps, as this is the first and only Android device I have and wouldn't like to brick it. (This is the also my initial step to flashing the EtherealRom V2.4 ROM.)
I have the Samsung Drivers installed. That is all I need to use Odin right?
Steps:
Download the TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar file
Put Galaxy Player in download mode (Power Button + down)
Connect the Galaxy Player to the computer
Start Odin
Ensure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked.
Select PDA and choose the "TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar" file that I previously downloaded
Then click start.
I have some other questions, I have been reading up the forums and would like to clarify something with the .pit file. Is it only required when you would need to to re-partition the drive? and therefore installing a kernel does NOT require a re-partition of the drive, am I correct?
Which of the following scenarios would REQUIRE a re-partition of the drive (and thus a .pit file when using Odin)?
- Flashing a Full STOCK ROM (with Recovery) for e.g here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850
- Flashing a Stock-based ROM such as EtherealRom V2.4 ROM
- Flashing a Recover such as CWM
I'm new to this Android ROM scene so I just trying to get a better understanding of this all.
Thanks in advance.

True all you need is the .tar file to flash. The pit file is usually unneeded when flashing a custom rom. However, make sure you turn on USB debugging first (Settings->Applications->Development-> Check USB debugging) before flashing anything. Sometimes just not having that checked gets you into bootloops and cause problems.
PIT files are used when you get your partition tables messed up. I believe this means you're not able to boot into the device or access download mode anymore (basically for Bricked devices). So you 90% (made up statistic =P but you get the point) of the time when you are flashing back to stock, you just need again the .tar file (unless as I said previous your device is bricked). You almost never need a PIT file to flash a custom rom from stock, and Flashing from CWM only requize a .zip file that's still in the zip form (meaning don't unzip it with winRAR, 7zip, and similiar programs

usually they should be in the ROM file (md5.tar) that you can download from sammobile.
At least when I flashed the latest ROM for my region via MobileOdin it showed all those components.

usually it will be flashed automatically, ==>> guide
Dont flash it that way unless you want to have a very fancy door stopper..flash the full md5.tar file as PDA..
Never ever touch PIT and repartition..
Usually you don't need to flash multiple file firmware. You should flash it if you want to fully wipe your phone's system and data partitions from previous Rom junks (like branding). You also don't need separate bootloader because it's usually in .pda with Rom (primary and secondary bootloader files) and are flashed automatically.
U must be also absolutely sure what you are doing if you want to repartition with .pit file information. If there are no problems with your partition layout it's better to not touch this option because in case of some failure while flashing you could brick your shiny new phone.
There is not many 3 files firmware in net but you can find it if you do some search. It's also important to find one which corresponding with your region to have correct CSC settings.
Here you go 3 file firmware for XEO region:
https://hotfile.com/dl/158814567/30ec3bc/GT-I9300_XEO_I9300XXALEF_I9300OXFALEA_I9300XXLEF.rar.html
Remember - do not use repartition with one file firmware. If you must perform repartition use 3 file firmware with correct .pit file (usually newest mx.pit). But even with 3 file firmware you don't need to check repartition option.

unless the zip package of the frimware has those files separately you have to flash only the single tar file. it has all the files integrated. the only change is its automatically flashed we dont need to select it manually

I9100M back to stock help.

I'm trying to revert my I9100M back to stock, however, Im not sure where I find the stock ics kernel for bell. I downloaded the bell firmware from sammobile, however i want to have everything correct before i do flash it.
With the bell firmware that you get from sam mobile, where do you find the PDA/PHONE/CSC files? and also, when i do find all three correct ones, where do i go to flash the kernel to the corresponding one? I don't want to brick my phone!
what format was it downloaded. if it is tar format, use odin and put it in pda section, it is an all in one file with everything you need bundled together.
if it is in zip format use cwm to flash.
if it is in another format, extract thyebfiles and then use either odin cwm to flash depending on the file ending.

[Q] flashing ROM, w/o flashing CSC? [SOLVED]

hi, I'm a pretty much a noob when it comes to ROMs, but I'm trying.
I noticed that when I flash a new ROM (always via PC Odin, after I screwed up once), sometimes my settings, apps and their order remain as they were, and sometimes the phone is wiped clean and I have to download them over again or they download automatically, and I just need to adjust the settings and the order of the apps.
how can I predict which one of these situations will happen when I install a new ROM?
is it determined by the CSC? or unrelated?
I'll explain my goal:
my sgs2 is with branded ROM (LS4), and I want to flash unbranded ROM (e.g. XWLSD), but I don't want to lose my apps and settings.
I can't create a titanium backup without rooting, and I don't know how to install CWM in order to create a backup without installing another kernel (which may not suit my rom).
so:
1. can I flash only the ROM itself, maintaining my own modem and CSC? even if it means flashing the ROM, and in the same ODIN flash- reflashing my old modem and CSC [PDA, PHONE, CSC]?
2. is it even possible to extract a CSC flashing file from a ROM?
3. will it help?
Thanks!

If you wanna keep your settings and apps you're gonna have to wait/flash an OTA (Over the Air) update.
You can check the live feed here.
Whenever you flash any ROM with a new CSC your device will be wipe (apps & settings).
You could flash only the OS, but I don't think it'll work. When a new ROM comes along, is meant to be flashed with the whole phone, code and CSC package.
Flashing isn't that hard, I get that you had problems before and you don't want anything to do with Odin, but hey, to root you're device you only have to flash siyah v5 from gokhanmoral.com.
You can also flash CWM + SU + Busybox via recovery or try ExynosAbuse (one click root by chainfire).
To overcome your flashing fears, you can always flash any stock ROM with Mobile Odin (Root needed).
thanks
going to root and install CWM manually, and afterwards, checking out the dsixda rom kitchen to see if I can make a stable version of what I like (my CSC and modem, and the rest of the rom from XWLSD or any other popular ROM)
still on stocks for now, though...
I'll leave the custom ROM games for my kindle fire, which is useless to me in stock rom.
I'll report back.
Thanks!
POST EDIT:
rooted through the stock recovery (signed the app using "signing tools", and flashed an ext. sd update)
now I can make a proper backup and start getting messy.
uploaded what I flahsed if anyone ever finds this question interesting. taken from another thread, and updated to SU 1.25... not my own.
intend to try the same with CWM.
Good luck
Re: [Q] flashing ROM, w/o flashing CSC?
Updates:
Still couldn't flash cwm without a custom kernel. Gonna do some more research on that..
As to ROM & CSC, I did the following:
Before everything -backup!
1. Opened the 2 roms (the branded with the modem & CSC I wanted, and the unbranded with the ROM I wanted) via dsixda kitchen in cygwin.
2. With both of them open in cygwin, I put the modem.bin file and the csc files (that are found inside cache.img and in hidden.img) instead of those same files in the ROM I want
3. I repacked the ROM & flashed the ROM I want with the csc and modem from my old ROM via cwm recovery. No wipes, apps, settings and order remained unchanged.
I assume u can do the same without using dsixda, just by switching the hidden & cache images inside the .tar files. The advantages of doing it this way are:
1. Removing the vendor's apps from the csc
2. De-odexing
3. Pre-rooting
4. Adding cwm using recovery.img from my backup.
5. I tried it & it worked
Disadvantages:
Takes more time
Makes you install the dsixda kitchen, and it's a bit complicated process, but hey - if I managed to do it....
Hope I help anyone
