Can I get an honest opinion.... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I know this is the note forum and opinions will be biased. But I'm hoping we can be adults here...tomorrow is my last day that I can return my note to BB under their 30 day policy. I love this phone and all but it can definitely use a little more umph! Run MW3 on a non OC'd kernel then on DaG's kernel at 1.8 and you will know what I'm talking about. So the qustion is...how many of you would give this phone back and get the S3 on saturday given the option?

1. I would keep the note, I love the large screen.
2. if i was to go back to the smaller screen: galaxy nexus > sg3 (i hate touchwiz and samsung/carrier software/upgrade cycle).

I hear that one x is pretty damn sick. Some people don't like the restriction of insternal sd only. But honestly all my music and photos and videos are on the cloud anyway...and the lack of removal battery? No biggie. I'm always near a charger...always. this thing is interesting as is the s3. Note is tight but me being someone who switches phones a lot, it might be time.

I've had mine OC'd on GB and running non- OC'd on ICS on Flapjaxxx's ROM right now. Honestly, I really don't notice a difference at all.
Other than just wanting to have the latest phone, I really can't think of any reason why I'd exchange my Note.

This. I do not think I would be hugely impressed if I traded this in for the SGSIII. The S4 processor is the only real improvement, and unless it is night and day better than the Note, I'd just miss having the Note screen size and stylus.
On a different note (<--ha), I recommended buying phones from Costco. Free accessories and a 90 day exchange period with no restocking fees. Plus their prices are usually cheaper anyway.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

I have also recently had to make the same decision as I too buy my phones through BB but I think it comes down to personal necessity.
I am going to college in the fall so I needed something I could easily take notes on and jot down little ideas and such like that and I have also gotten too used to the phone size. Every time I even look at another phone it just seems microscopic. (as you get used to the big screen, sure you can get used to the small screen too)
If you are going to be using mainly for personal - GS3
If you are interested in mainly business or professional use, I would say the Note. (Plus, it looks more professional even when youre just texting ^.^)

Do you know if they have their own insurance policy. for 6.99 a month i get unlimited new/refurbished phones for any reason outside of lost or stolen (rooted, bricked, destroyed, water, hulk attacks). One time, I gave it back to them as I bricked it and they upgraded my phone for free. As a constant flasher (haha), I do not know if I would be able to give that up just yet.

Like others, I really like having the latest phone but it wasnt a big deal for a few years because for some reason I was able to get yearly upgrades, so even if I had a new phone for a few months and a better one came out I knew I could upgrade a few months from than when an even better phone would be out. When I picked up my infuse last year is when my yearly upgrade disapeared, I decided to open a second line which will give me back yearly upgrades, the trade off is a slightly higher bill...I think its 25 bucks more per month. I got the note in march and I can upgrade my other line in august.

They do not. The only insurance offered is through the carrier/assurian. If you need the black tie protection, BB can't be beat.

Vive la Note!
I would keep the Note there is not that much of a big improvment on the SG3 to make up for the loss of the big display and spen. All the software improvements like the Svoice and Smart stay will be ported over by our Devs the only thing that you can't get is the better S4 processor or exynos. SO do you go with smaller screen, and no spen or better processor? I'll stick with the Note.

I've had my note for about two weeks and loved it the first week (rooted it right away). After going back and forth between this, my old nexus s, and my work phone(evo design) I've decided its too big and uncomfortable to hold. I love being able to type cleanly and the screen real estate, but its just too much for me.
I'm going to return it next week for a galaxy s3 pre order. I flashed to stock and unrooted resetting the flash counter and everything. Its not too hard if you decide to do it and I've never used adb before. If I didn't flash a different from the beginning, this thing would have been returned within a couple days. I've been using stock for a few days now and its a world of difference.
EDIT: I also didn't find any use for the S-pen. I tried to like it my first week, but using my fingers is easier for everything and I didn't find the snote app practical for much of anything. I know some people find great uses for this thing, but some reviews are right, you'll never know until you try

I'd keep the Note. For one simple thing, it is a Far the best phone out there with a big if. and that is IF you know what you want to use it for.
Simple example: sMemo not pratical? that is what i thought at first. until i created 2 to 3 empty notes as widgets on my homescreen just waiting to be written on and expanded in size for quick look.
Galaxy S3 to me is no upgrade, as a matter of fact if anything its just the software really. I think that Galaxy Note got a bad rap because of Ginger Bread, performance on that sucked. ICS in the other hand is awesome. I do Owned MW3 and performance on that sucked on the Note, and that is because of software optimization. Blame Android fragmentation for that

MW3 on saurom OC'd to 1.78 plays extremely fluidly...you take away the oc on ics and it is horrible to play.
Considering ill have this phone for the next two years....I'm just a little worried that the device has to be stretched to its limits NOW as soon as I bought it to perform "acceptably"...FYI I don't think ANY current unofficial ICS rom out now is "acceptable".

I have a one x and a g nexus that sit in my drawer because I love my note so much. I feel like zoolander when I pick up a device with a smaller screen!

Getting the s3 isn't a bad option. Better than getting an One X. If I were to get a phone now, it would be the N7000 or the s3. BUT, I still love my G Note on UCLE2 ICS.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke

Stick with the note....Its a outstanding phone, with a beautiful large screen.. And development is finally taking off on this phone is only going to get better through time too. You will regret having such a smaller screen. Plus I know the processer is a little faster on the other phone but you won't ever tell the difference that much, plus we already have a overclocked gingerbread kernel.. and ics is right around the corner and soon we will have that kernel overclocked as well.....stick it out you won't regret it!

I just love the note. Its has literally replaced my ipad and laptop as well. Shoot it has has replaced my tv as well.....

Plus you don't technically have to be a Costco member to order from their online store
I have had a phone with the S4 processor (HTC One S), and the performance is marginally better. For me the Note does everything I want and then some. With Nova Prime there is 0 lag or anything else. The screen is the best I have seen, even beating the One X in my honest opinion. I will try a GS3 and see if maybe I will score one locally when they hit craigslist, but just from looks alone....it looks like a huge vibrant, which I was not a huge fan of. The software is already being ported from the GS3 to our device, our FFC is better, and our design seems more high end.

Getting S3 is nice idea.. but If you want to do more than what you can do with a smartphone.. then definitely go for NOTE. It is the most awesome phone on the earth.
Buying S3 from ATT, Verizon and T-Mo is not much of an upgrade.. this S3 is Dual core (not quad as of International version)

I am into the same boat, thinking of getting the S3. The reason I am thinking about it is battery life really. I am disappointed that my 2500 mah battery with push Exchange email is down to 50% at the end of a 9 hour work day. My Captivate used to get to 60-65% instead.
If the S3 has better battery life then I will jump ship. Until them I am still trying to find ways to increase it. I have used hacked rooms as well as ICS its all the same.
I won't lie though, it is going to be tough to leave because the Note will always have these 2 things for it.
BIGGEST SCREEN
S-pen built in.

The biggest con for owning the Note? is that i cannot for the life of me use another phone. It has become everything from Phone, TV, game machine, Work, and Moleskine pocket notebook (yes the paper kind).

Thinking about going back to my S2... maybe I am crazy

I'm looking for some outside opinions on this. Here's my thoughts/reasons for going back to the S2...
1. It seems like I had better battery with the S2.
2. S2 was much snappier (exynos)
3. Waaaaay more roms.
4. Way more accessories.
Now, the counter the roms and accessories is the Note hasn't been out as long. But my thinking is by the time the Note catches up on roms, the S3 will be out (maybe).
So I'm looking at selling my Note and buying an S2 (again) but this time, no contract. Am I crazy? Would you do it if you were me? I love my note, but I had more fun on my S2 I guess.
I put mine up on Craigslist for $625 to see if anyone will bite and make a offer. But only too take that money and buy the international version which has alot more development for it currently. I had interest in upcoming LTE in my area but ehhh HSPA+ works fine.
If all else fails i still love the ATT note

Have you rooted it and installed the Saurom yet? Makes it a lot snappier. Like butta.

My concern is that S2 seems to be more port friendly since it shares the chip set with the international version, where the Note(att) does not. So i'm not sure the roms will ever catch up. At least not by the time the S3 is released.
Annnnd actually... I hadn't even considered that I'm still inside the 30 day time frame. I guess I could return it... Think I can get away with that with the flash counter being triggered??
And for the record I've tried saurom and it made the lockscreens look funny with a black background. I've been pretty happy with TPC rom as far as performance I guess. But either way, nothing is as snappy as what my S2 was.
I am returning mine tomorrow and going back to my Galaxy S2. Like you said the phone is just faster and snappier. Can't wait for the new Sammy LTE chip running at 1.5ghz.

3 weeks since the at&t Note release, still seems to be no real indication of ICS coming to it soon. And on top of that, subsidized pricing on it still hasn't dropped to at least $200.
Paying $250-300 to renew contract for a phone with outdated software is a huge waste of money imo. But it would make more sense if you either currently had no working phone, or the current phone was nearing its 'death -bed'.
For the time being, I'm mostly using the Pre 3 even though its screen size is around the same as the iphones. But it's the webOS on it that makes it easier for me to ignore the small screen size.
Ironic how I kept thinking that it's Samsung and/or HTC or bust....but yet I'm saddled with Dell and HP instead.
So funny how people expected ICS to come out as soon as they bought the note when it was said the note is EXPECTED to RECEIVE ICS! No such date was Ever mentioned, only for the international version!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
You're not crazy.
I use my international gs2 as my daily driver and switch to the note every few days. I basically use it as the smallest tablet rather than the largest phone. I have a stand, my n64, psx emulator going and it looks like I may get 4 days battery life.
I don't think 30 days is enough for me to choose so I'll give it a bit longer and sell it later on if necessary.
I actually already returned the Note for an S2 already. My reasons were pretty much the same as yours, but also including inability for one handed operation. Another factor for me was gaming! Too many games weren't supported on the Note yet and I didn't have the patience to wait for it.
I won't lie though, not having the Note now for a week i do miss the big screen and the colors. It seems the colors on the S2 are just off compared to the Note.
In the end I might even return the S2 and wait for the Skyrocket HD or the S3. I think my screen fix would be fixed with either of those newer phones (assuming the S3 comes in higher than 480 x 800).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Came from the Skyrocket and I was in love with that phone almost as much as my all-time favorite the HD2. But I couldn't look past the bigger screen on the Note. I have to say after buying the Note I wasn't going to commit to it all the way and held onto my Skyrocket just in case. The Note isn't quite as fast, but fast enough and I made look like SkyICS Rom on the Skyrocket. I have a big hand so I am able to pull off one handed use for the most part on the Note. Battery is about the same, around 12-13 hours. Going back to my Skyrocket now seems funny and small. Note it is!
I just returned my Note last weekend after having it for a week. I have to move three other family member phone's sim cards just to revert back; it was painful. While I miss the Note's larger and higher def screen, my good ole Skyrocket was very much zippier, better battery life and all my screens line up. My Note was rooted and was oc'd to 1.7.
But the real trigger for this reversal was that I nearly dropped the Note more than a few times trying to do stuff with my one free hand. The final straw was when my case came and I still have a hard time holding on to it. I have fairly large hands but there is only so much you can reach with one hand.
Also, it was tougher to hide the screen from peering eyes when you're trying to sneak in a quick email, web lookup :0. And this is with the brightness all the way down.
I'll patiently await the Skyrocket HD or something else that is no more than a tiny bit larger.
Looks like Aaron from phone dog is going to use the s2 as his daily driver also. Note was too much of a beast for him to handle.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I've made the decision to go back to the S2. Hopefully, I'll get used to the smaller screen size. I'll use the S2 until the S3 comes out. The note is a fantastic phone...it really is.. but I need something with more dev support UNTIL the S3 comes out. Plus, the battery on the S2 (with custom roms) was insane. Not to mention a better performing processor.
I'm going to miss having a phone as big as my face.

Better battery life on the Skyrocket? You're doing something wrong or you got a defective device. My Note lasts nearly twice as long as my Skyrocket ever did.
You people going back to an S2 are crazy. If you don't have LTE in your area, I can almost understand it, but I will never go back to a non-LTE device again. And I wouldn't give up the bigger screen and better battery life on my Note for any other phone out right now.

Seems to just be general impatience. They expect 100 Roms within a month of release. Even though these devs are doing this at night in their spare time.

I guess. I personally don't care about ROMs. I figured I'd just wait for the official ICS and I'm fine with the current Gingerbread ROM anyway. My Skyrocket is still sitting in a drawer and every time I pick it up, it feels tiny and inconsequential compared to the Note. I also remember how long the battery lasted for me and I couldn't even consider going back to it.
Galaxy S2 was a great phone and the Exynos is badass, but I'll sacrifice a little speed for LTE. I hit between 40 and 50 mbps consistently here in Texas. Data cap or not, that makes everything faster.
I wouldn't trade my note for the world. Roms will be available soon. People just have no patience. I don't mind waiting for ics.

General thoughts on the note

Just wanted to give my general impressions on the Note. I'm a former iPhone user and jumped to the skyrocketing in January. I'm a total noob with rooting and flashing but I'm pretty competent with the help of xda. Ended up cracking the screen on the skyrocket and purchased the note last week. I was pretty impressed with it stock for about an hour and couldn't resist rooting.
The Team objection ics rom is out of this world, Unbelievable, 0 bugs, 0 lag, everything is flawless with good battery life to boot. I believe the developer is appdroid and I'd just like to extend my thank you for creating such a piece of artwork.

My girlfriend was digging the note when she saw it. It appealed to my inner nerd as well. So we went to AT&T and got a couple, she got the white, I got the blue. We are coming from sprint, and have yet to cancel our contract with them. We wanted to give the note and at&t a try before we fully jumped ship on sprint. I think I am ok with the service through at&t, so I am ok with trading sprint in for them.
The note is interesting. I don't like the default browser, it doesn't seem to zoom on web pages effectively, like it doesn't wrap text to make it readable. But I downloaded a new browser and thats fixed. The battery gets me through the work day, but with what I consider medium usage at best, it's only lasting 10 hours, which seems a little low, especially when I hear the ICS update is making the battery even worse.
I was hoping to be a little bit more wow'd by the note. But coming from an HTC evo, to the note isn't nearly the jump of going from my blackberry curve to the evo. I feel like with a phone this big I should be able to do some amazing things with it, but thus far I haven't figured out what it can really do.
It seems like a really great device, I just want to find ways to make it better or make it do more. Once I convince myself to keep the note, I know I will root it and start flashing, so I am sure that will help me scratch an itch. So I am glad to hear you are liking that rom. But I can't start scratching until I know I am keeping the phone. So I need to find ways/things to convince myself.
Mike208 - I am sure battery life will get better. My first android phone was a Samsung Captivate. In the beginning it was good for about 2.5 hours of screen time a day and made it through the day with push email. In the end I would regularly get about 3.5- 4 hours a day and come home with about 55% battery instead of 30%. In time i believe this phone will have a similar life.

Well, what more are you looking for when you got the Note? The GNex is pure Android ICS, the HTC one X selling point was the camera, The iPhone 4S was Siri, and the Note is S-Pen and Huge screen. I never owned the Evo so I dont know what its selling point was but I'd think the 4inch screen to 5.3inch with higher resolution, single core to dual core processor, S-pen, thinner, ICS leaks latest os firmware, and 4G LTE is a jump. I wish the Note could cook us breakfast too but Apple has a patent on it.

Just like you, I tested the Note and ATT's network before jumping from my beloved OG EVO and Sprint. Like stated in the above post, every device has a selling point. The Note's selling point is the 5.3" screen and SPen...which I absolutely love. I would suggest learning how to use the SPen and SMemo. I use these tools often and love what they provide. Also, with my short time with a custom ICS ROM, I was loving what is coming down the pipe with ICS. I only switched back to GB, because I want to wait for the source to be released. Otherwise, ICS will really give this device a boost to the top.
Last, a friend at work just got the LTEVO. I had a chance to play with it for awhile and while it is certainly a great device, I didn't feel any buyers remorse. Since I'm so used to my Note, the LTEVO actually felt a bit to small for my taste. I guess it's true about not going back to a smaller screen, lol.
At the end of the day, I love my Note and can't see me going to another device anytime soon. Oh ATT's network is as fast as they claim too. It was kind of painful to see such a great device on a subpar network...at least until Sprint gets their network running the way it should. I actually have faith in Sprint and I'm rooting for them too.

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I got the phone because of its size. I was originally annoyed at the way the default browser handled web pages, btu fixed that with a new browser. I shouldn't say I am not wow'd with it. Just sayign when I got my evo I played with it and played with it and played with it. I haven't really got the bug to play with the note like that. I am sure its because it's not a new OS, like the evo was for me.
Yes I do need to learn to use the S-pen and S-memo, I don't really use either. My hand writing is not so great, and even worse on this device lol. I am definitely anxious for ICS, or at least to be able to root and flash.
I think I was expecting to do more with all the screen real estate. But obviously the more widgets I add, the worse my battery is. Well I am off to play with it some and see what I can figure out.
Mike208, my friend I think you have it correct. Switching OS's will give you that desire to play and play and play. Like you, I came from a Crackberry and I played with my EVO forever it seemed. So when you update to ICS, it will give you some new things to discover.
On the wow factor was the data speeds! Not to mention the Note is fast stock. I still like to turn on my Note and marvel at the screen, lol.
I say try to learn and use every aspect of this device...it will really surprise you. Good luck and have fun!
And I didn't think you were complaining, just asking questions.

When your eyeballs get as old as mine, all that screen real estate is wonderful! I don't have to zoom in nearly as far to be able to read it.
I too came from the EVO 4G, and I got that because at the time it had the biggest screen available, now the Note has (well, if you discount the Dell Streak).
My note has replaced both my EVO and my 7" Galaxy Tab (original version), now I only need to carry one device. There are compromises on both ends, but nothing I can’t live with.
I can agree stock is OK but I really wasn't wowed because I came from the ics leak on the skyrocket so I was used to ics for a few months. But the rom with all the s3 features and customizations it owns everything out.

Long time xda lurker and I think this is my first post. Replying here because I too came from sprint with my beloved original evo 4G running cm7. I keep getting offers from friends to buy my evo and I keep turning them down. I think I'm going to throw AOKP on it since it's supported.
Anyway, I live in Dallas/Fort Worth and my 4G speeds were always amazing. Having said that, the biggest wow factor for me with the move to att and the note has been the awesome data speeds. Little stuff, like d/ling a 3 meg app from the market is just ridiculously fast and comparable to my home uverse on the fastest plan.
My battery life is decent if I can keep it out of my fiance's hands and her constant playing of draw something and zombie lane.
I'm using SwiftKey Tablet Beta 3 because I love the word predictions. I was a long time swype user but it seems too inaccurate on the note. That's without the spen.
I'm using go launcher ex even though it is a laborious process finding good themes.
Haven't rooted yet because I've realized it's quite different going from an HTC phone to Samsung and wanted to get comfortable before switching.
Edit: guess this was my 2nd post

For Swype to work accurate, you need to turn off languages other than English, ( or whatever you using) in swype settings.

Yeah I was considering the S3 because it had some cool sounding features. So I am definitely interested in getting my root/flash on with this note. I may even take a crack at developing my own rom with this bad boy. I would love to see something like Diablos 4 Kornerz rom on the note

That does seem to drastically help the accuracy when using Swype with my index finger. I'm going to give it a try again.

One more random thing. I thought I would try and run quadrant just for fun and after killing some background apps and ram using go taskmanager and go power master my stock unrooted note scored a 3100. Not sure if that is impressive or not but seems to be decent given other scores I've come across. Makes me look forward to ics roms even more.

Just tried an interesting experiment. Was running more quadrant tests and my score never got higher than 2500. I realized the only thing different was having swype set as default keyboard. Switched back to SwiftKey and scored 3053 on first try. Food for thought.

Quadrant means nothing. I used to get 3000+ on my HD2 (2009 technology) which isn't even an official android device.
I have the note, and I am still within my 30 days....I have been having lots of LAG....not sure but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone. I am thinking about contacting amazon wireless for a replacement. I too am dying to root this thing as I have been running ICS on my T-Mobile G2 for several months and absolutely loved it. My battery life increased by nearly 50% and performance overall increased as well. I did have it OC'd to about 1.5Ghz (from 800Mgz stock)
I am contemplating the SG3 but, yesterday I used a friends SG2 and the 4.5 screen seemed tiny, nearly "non-functional" LOL. The SG2 is much more fluid than my SGN.
Anyone who has had lag issues ...how have you dealt with it?

Formers S3 owners...

Just curious to see how former S3 owners are enjoying their Note 2. I'm on the fence right now, the size is not a big deal as I feel I can adapt to it pretty quickly. The bigger screen size and multi view options really interest me. What were the big drivers for you to jump from the S3 to the Note 2? How would you compare the experiences?
TIA
I had the s3 and I'd say it would be like comparing a wrx to the st or z06 to the zr1i. Both are awesome but one is just a little bit better. Bigger, faster, and just overall more awesomer lol. I like playing with the stylus, split screen, bigger screen plus I'm a phone whore so I'm always trading.

F'n love it! Battery is incredible (I'd say close to double the screen-on time). Multi window is really cool too, and with root you can get ALL apps loaded in it, where as with stock there were only like 6 apps available in multi window, which made it useless.
I'm actually liking the spen too (writing this post with it). Along with that, I also suggest the flygrip, it makes using this massive phone with one hand not only possible, but convenient and comfortable. It doubles as a kick stand too, which I like to do 180 portrait mode, and it sits firm where you can use the spen and hit menus/home button without it falling over. I actually used it on the S3 until I got my note, and I love it! I switched from T-Mobile to Verizon, so my network is 10 times better now as well.
The S3 is great, and if T Mobile lets me off the hook from my cancellation I'm still going to keep it for an mp3 player etc...but IMO this Note 2 blows it away with just the battery alone...which is crazy because the screen is way bigger AND way brighter. I couldn't even see my s3 if it was a halfway sunny day.
So yeah, you could say I'm a fan

Bigger screen. Faster. Better battery. S pen. Just awesome zero regrets taking my s3 back. Plus I had the "blue" one but the longer I had it the more it looked purple. If size is not a concern, get off the fence and get this bad boy.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, the battery life factor is something I forgot about it. Looks like I'm jumping the fence!
It is so much better! I still have my S3 so I can swap the SIM card and use whichever I chose, but I don't thing I will be using S3 very often. I may just use S3 like an iPod on Wi-Fi
Jump in! I truly loved my sg3... for 30 days I had it..lol. Note 2 came out on day 29 and I dropped by best buy just to see the "Beast" before my return date was up. Took one look and held it.. and that was it. Sg3 was awesome. Fast. Smooth and powerful. Note 2 is just a whole different world. Has completely changed my mobile computing/productivity. Had Droid X and tbolt (sigh) before sg3 so I was shockingly happy with it. But the Note 2 is literally unreal. Good luck and have fun!

Wife and I bought s3 from craigslist and had them for 3 weeks then I got an upgrade from a friend of mine who purchased the note 2 . I love the gs3 on verizon but the note 2 is just like others have said, better battery and slightly faster. The gs3 is still a beast and ive recommended most of my friends and family to get the gs3. My wife is slightly jealous so I will probably end up giving her mine for a bit while I sell her gs3 to buy another note 2 full price.

For me it was when Mugen made a 6400mah battery for it. That's more power than my galaxy tab 7.7 which is only 5100mah. I like to read books on my tablet which is painful on my small rezound. I just have to figure on which color, I know crazy. I prefer black to grey, but white is selling for a higher price on ebay( now that's crazy).

I'm curious, what it a mint condition G3 going for on craigs list right now??
I have two mint condition G3's with extra batteries, extra backs and cases (including hyperion extended batts etc) that I want to sell but I'm not sure what they're worth??
I just sold mine last Friday on CL for $350. Probably could have got more but wanted a quick sale. Put it up Thursday evening after getting my N2 , gone Friday.

Its been a rather busy year for me on the phone front. I started the year off with a Thunderbolt, followed up by a Rezound, and then purchased Galaxy S3 in July.
Suffice to say the S3 was the best of the lot. When I got the S3, I thought I had found the promise of Android. Finally the OS had been optimized and I felt confident that I would keep the S3 for at least a year. Then came the Note 2, and a window of opportunity. I had an upgrade that I HAD to use before January (dont ask) and so I sold my S3 on Gazelle for almost 300 and put the order in.
I wont lie, initially and still it feels a little awkward handling the Note 2. Its big, its a lot bigger than the S3. The S3's ergonomics were spot on and like most any well designed phone you tend to forget your holding something. You just use the interface..the body goes away in the interaction. But with the Note 2 I haven't gotten there yet, I am still very aware that I'm working to grasp a device and the interface comes a second later.
There is a slight disconnect because you have to physically accommodate the phone ya know?
That being said there are a number of features in the Note 2 that go a very very long way to making you forgive (and maybe forget) its girth. The screen is just awesome, its the big screen jumbo man TV of the smartphone world. How can you hate that!? If you have any love for tech your drawn to it like moth to a flame. Its stunning. Watching YouTube in bed is like having my 58inch plasma on my chest...MWAHAAH!..I dunno..there's something about that. I dig it.
Also compared to the S3, its faster, the antenna seems to be better, and that has that fancy pen. Outside of that, there isn't much that makes this a giant leap from the S3. For me its really just about the screen and maybe the possibility of having a more capable hacked and overclocked quad core monster after I root it, but that is still a ways off.
Imo its just a bigger s3....I really don't get the big deal of multi view. I have no regrets though. I love it.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - Will you be upgrading?

I think at this point, if you have a Note 1, you're off contract or at least upgrade eligible. I was wowed by the HTC One, and looking forward to the event last night for the S4, but I was looking for a more significant hardware change. Samsung seems to be more interested in adding more and more features, but none of them were "must haves" for me. I'll be going with the HTC One for my next phone, and will keep my Note for work.
If this is the S4, the Note 3 will likely just be a larger version, probably around 5.8 inches.
Ironically, Samsung seems to be following in Apple's footsteps - they've found success with a particular design, so they have no impetus to push it forward, while HTC is designing some pretty amazing things, partly because they've always done that, but mostly because they need to do so.
When I saw the S4, I immediately thought of Samsung's dig at the iPhone 4S in one ad - "If it looks exactly the same as the last model, how will people know I upgraded?"
Plus, with all of that software, I doubt the S4 will get Key Lime Pie in the same year it's released.
Here's hoping for a $99 Note 2 in the near future.
I'll be getting the s4, the s3 has a ton of dev support and I'm sure the s4 will have just as much.

Honestly, no, while I love my Note, I don't like the look of the the S IV or Note 2. I don't like the button and I want something that looks like it's awesome. I've been eying the HTC One quite a bit and as the HTC Hero was my first Android device it seems only fair that I go with them. However I don't want to go down on screen size. I'm not greedy enough for Huweai's (sp?) 6.3 inch screen, but definitely no less than the OG Note's screen. However the final deciding factor for me is how the whole JB thing has paned out. If I'm spending premium $$$ then I want the best for my money's worth, and that means the latest and greatest software. I'm not a mindless consumer that doesn't demand the best bang for my buck. Not only do I demand it, I also put my money where my mouth is.

In not thrilled on the look but im tired of the og note and im sure there will be a ton of Dev support on it like most galaxy phones. I think the ONE is cool looking but I need a phone with removable battery and SD slot. The ONE doesn't have that so that's a no.

I'd have to agree with a couple of the posts above - the button doesn't excite me one bit. At the same time however, the Note isn't starving for power though. I know the Note 2 and S4 have much better hardware, but I just don't need it right now. We'll see what the Note 3 has in store for us, and then I'll go from there. For once though, I don't feel I *need* to upgrade.
I almost hate to say it, but I agree. This is the second time I've been burned by samsung (OG captivate owner) and I think I've learned my lesson here. The S4 does have some nice software features, but it didn't wow me as opposed to the S3 over the S2.
I think i'm waiting for the new Nexus phone or possibly the rumored Moto X phone. No replaceable battery or Micro SD is a deal breaker for me so I'm hoping at least one of the phones above support that though i'm not holding my breath on the nexus.
I love the speed of the JB roms, I just wish we had the drivers to have the roms stable. I gotta say that HTC did a great job with the One, if that thing had SD and removable battery, it would have been a grand slam.
MWC this year should be interesting.
Why don't you guys like the button? I don't mind it at all, to be honest. The super thin bezel is sweet too

If Nexus came out with a larger than 5 inch screen I'd jump right on it. Until something like that happen I'm going to keep on watching who treats their customers right and when it's upgrade time that's who'll get my money. I'm in love with the stylus and the screen size of the Note, but customer loyalty is a big factor when it comes to spending my shekels. You treat me good and I'll spend good money.
As far as why I don't like the button, it just seems old school and takes away from the elegance I want for $200 + device. And as far as the unremovable battery and lack of sd card slot...I can deal with that because you can't even really move apps to the sd card any more. And my N7 is the same way and we get along marvelously. All in all it's a preference thing.

I don't see any reason to upgrade just to have the newest thing. (Think about it SERIOUSLY. The "S" phones are Samsungs fanboy phone really. This is the phone that the AVERAGE user buys just because it's "new"....mostly Iphone converts and people that just want to have the "newest thing" to show off) Honestly, when I saw the s4 I was thinking, "wow, nice Note2 with a faster CPU". I didn't look at EVERYTHING the s4 is offering (software and all) but if I were to upgrade now (I have 4 upgrades I can use anytime I wish), I'd just get the Note 2 and be done with it. After using the OG Note (and the Dell Streak before this phone), I just can't see going to a smaller screen. Like dvdivx said, the Note 3 will be here before we know it and the S4 will look like a kids toy compared to what that phone is going to bring. They can call the S4 the "flagship" all they want but if you have read anything about what the N3 "is going to have" and then look at the specs of the S4 you can see that this phone is nothing but a little brother to the Note3. To me, the S4 release changes a lot of the N3 "rumors" to FACT and because of that, I'm not interested at all in this phone. Not to mention that there will be as many people walking around with the S4 as there are IPhone users. "I have the S4! It's the newest thing"......yeah well, I stopped thinking like that when I walked away from Apple FOREVER.
I'll be holding on to at least 3 of my upgrades though because there are BIG things coming at the end of the year from everything I've been reading. This might just be the year that changes what a smartphone looks and feels like. ( I'm sure there are some of you that know what I'm talking about)

The S4 just isn't bleeding edge. It's just got some upgraded components that all the other phones are getting. Not interested. It would have been an awesome phone a year ago. It's an S3+, but the lemmings that will buy it have no clue.
I'm not eligible for an upgrade until early 2014. I just purchased the s3 on eBay and I'm planning on parting ways with the note 1. Next time I do upgrade, I'll probably go for the s4 or even the note 2 since they will probably be much cheaper by then with a contract extension

Why bother? The US version will probably not have the dual quad, just single quad.. So yes, more CPU than the current S3 but not a big deal. Same ram. Software I couldn't care less about.
Might as well save money on an S3, it's otherwise basically the same phone.
That said, nope. Maybe the Note 3 sometime, unless it's much bigger than it is today. I like my Note 1, but if it gets much bigger I'm not sure it's feasible.
Maybe we'll see

I myself want to get the note 3, but not so sure, if it will have a 6.3 inch, that's just to big to carry on the front pocket. That is .7 shy of carrying a 7 inch tablet in your pocket.

Where has all the i717 owners gone??

Okay I know our phone is getting old now and most probably upgraded to a S4 or HTC one by now, but I really miss the excitement 6 months ago when 4.2 android came to our phone. There was so much excitement and so many posts every minute.
Things have slowed down a lot here except in the android development forum, but it's understandable.
For me personally, i717 was my first android phone as I've only been a iPhone owner previously. i717 got me into Android, and despite some hardware and software setbacks, it has introduced me a whole new world of smart phones. I know what is bad and good about touchwiz. I know what kernels and roms are. And I've got great experience and patience with random reboots.
I will be with i717 for another year, and I honestly don't mind. It'll give me something to look forward to. That's not necessary a bad thing in life.
With that said, I salute the i717 big old Note.

I, too, came to the i717 straight from years of using iPhones. Although I did have a Nexus 7 and various android tablets, I'd only flashed the occasional ROM -- I find tablets completely worthless, so I never used them.
With the 5200mah battery, I honestly don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. The S4 looks nice, and I'm sure note 3 will be awesome, but running cm9, I'll take the pepsi challenge against any 2013 phone in terms of responsiveness. They may hit amazing numbers on antutu, but I just want to hit a button and immediately have the action happen, and that doesn't take an 8000.

To this day I still don't have a tablet. I was going to get one this Xmas but I actually refused to when I saw how the Note could replace my tablet needs. I love putting my Note side by side next to my wife's iPhone 5 using the same app, and can see 2x as lines with bigger font than hers. That itself is a feature of a our phone that an iPhone can never replace.
I haven't tried the 5200 battery but maybe I will someday. Swapping batteries can get cumbersome as well as charging 2x batteries at the same time.

@happy ~ when you arrived on the scene, the phone was at least a year and a half old. That's old in tech terms. So its understandable that users have moved on, as the majority of members here are always trying the latest and greatest thing, and a two year old phone isn't that.
But I agree with you, this is a great phone, and I for one can't see anything better in the "latest and greatest" phones out there.
Still on my Note, but we'll see what the Note 3 looks like. If it isn't the rumored 6+ inches I'll be interested.
Good to see there are others out there that share my same feelings on this phone. I've learned phones aren't about the best features, but how one relates to it. For me, i717 really did at a personal level. I just couldn't relate to a iPhone despite it having good stability. It just wasn't "me". It was Apple which I love as a company, but iPhone felt like a complete stranger despite being friends for so many years. Somehow, the Note and I just clicked.

I know what ya mean. I actually got this phone when it first came out. It was my first Android phone too after a long list of iphones. Ive gone through several different devices since then to include the GN II. I even cooked a ROM for it under my old screenname cjsspape. I found myself coming back to this device as a solid interim device till the GN III comes out. I tried the HTC One which is great but i love the big screen this line offers. This will always be my go-to back up device!

I was thinking of getting a new iPhone every 20-24 months and sell it for $400+ profit to cover my data costs. I can seriously use this phone for the next 10 years. OK, that's stretching a bit...but my point is this phone will last well over time. It has a place in my history. Actually we are holding the first phablet ever. Watch, it will be on display at MOMA in 50 years.

I love the way everyone's heads still turn when I pull out my note. Because the screen is so big people can clearly see how cool it is running the many custom roms.

+1. My worker has a Note 2 and was like whoa, what's that huge phone you got. I'm like Note 1..he's like No way, how can the screen possibly be bigger than Note 2. Well, it is. Its wider and more noticeable. No one notices a taller screen easily (i.e. iPhone 4S vs iPhone 5)

My LCD broke and was forced to upgrade to the S4 for the time being.

One quick correction, the current official version of Android on the Note 1 is 4.1.2, not 4.2 (or any variant of it).
Second, the person using CM9, you might consider upgrading to CM10, its now officially out of beta and really rock solid with alot of optimizations over version 9.
And now, my main point.
There is ONE reason Im considering an upgrade, ram. A second might possibly be screen quality.
This is an area where Samsung screwed up in my opinion.
With Android only continuing to grow in size, its going to require more and more ram to run effectively. 4.2.2 on my Nexus 7, completely stock with no apps installed sits in 500ish Mb of ram.
Yea, I know Android has memory management capabilities, but just like a PC, if you are constantly having to swap between inactive and active modes for different apps running in the background, this can create noticeable lag spikes as Android archives active apps into inactive status.
My second issue is the screen, Im not normally picky about the screen, most of the BS that people complain about on screens, I cant even see.
BUT, the screen on the Note specifically has, for lack of a better word, burn-in type issues. When I reboot my phone, it is VERY visible, with the AT&T logo screen (the all white with the AT&T logo in the middle), where I can actually see the entire screen is NOT a solid white, there are areas where it looks like some sort of other image is burned into the display.
This second issue however is not as big of a deal as I can only see this when I am looking at an all white (or nearly all white) background).
With regard to the 5200 Mah battery, Im using the Mugen extended battery (have no idea what the rated Mah is and I dont feel like looking).
Because Im still in the habit of charging my phone every day, I have not ever run the battery dry, the lowest Ive gotten it was 20% when I decided to do a little road trip from San Antonio to Houston and left the display on the entire trip getting there and coming back.
What I will say is, the major negative is that the phone wont fit in any 'things' that the phone would typically go into. For example, I have a car mount, my Note wont exactly fit in the car mount, I had to make a few adjustments to get it to work. Cases also make the extended batteries not an option.
Other than that however, the extended battery is completely fine, I mean really, what exactly are you putting behind your phone anyway?
I'm still rocking the I717 with a 5200mah batt but hope to get the upgrade if note 3 comes out better be water resistant lol:beer:

I use the ravpower 2750 I've had better results with it then 5200. And cm9 is stable no reboots... I run a 4.2 from as well as a back up ..I switch between the 2 whenever one gets old to me.

I'm still on my i717 and love it more with CM10.1 than I ever did before. It's still going strong in pocket tablet mode (200dpi) and I've pretty much stopped using my other devices for over a year now. I'm looking forward to the Note 3, a 1080p screen would be a welcome upgrade and if I get a new phone then I can do more hacking on the i717 like running Ubuntu or Debian on it.

Calc....do u get reboots and does it bother u? I get reboots every now and then on 10.1 and that's the only thing I can't stand with our phone...I could live or deal with everything else.

I got my Note on Feb 19 2012 at AT&T on launch day, I really did enjoy it. Sadly enough, the HTC One pulled me in with it's design and fluidity. I have passed my Note down to my brother and now somewhat regret it because I do miss having the large screen and s-pen.

I changed over to the s4 a few months ago and lent my note to a friend. Sure the s4 spec wise is better, but nothing will compare to my note. Also I can't stand the stupid front button on the s4.... Whoever thought that it looked good should be shot!!! I miss the clean and uninterrupted look of the note, so nice. I still get to cradle my note from time to time and knowing I still own it relives me.
