I recently deleted Kies from my pc as I never used it with my S2.
Now I want to root my S3 and I was wondering do I need to have Kies on my pc so that some driver files are present when rooting?

No, you don't. Just make sure you install the right device drivers.
If ODIN can pick up the phone, then you're fine.
You need the Samsung drivers found on KIES.
As an alternative, you can just download the Samsung driver instal package from Softpedia etc
If you do instal KIES, ensure it is not running (or its process in PC task manager) when using Odin, or you may have issues with Odin.

If Kies was installed when you used your GS2 you should already have the relevant drivers (well I did)
It's recommended to install latest KIES.
Yesterday i got error when i plugged my phone to my notebook but then i installed kies then the driver successfully installed.

Does your phone connect normally via USB to the computer ? completely uninstall and re-install via a fresh download of KIES. Clear your Temp, %Temp% and prefetch folders. Check if the cable is faulty or not. One of these is bound to help you.
I have tried reinstalling keis and done everything i can think of but nothing seems to help. Before the update of kies my phone used to be able to connect via usb like normal ever since the update its all gone to pot

First of all, I must say that KIES is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever seen. It is buggy and you must hope it will work eventually.
I got one successful with my old phone (galaxy 551) after updating via ODIN first to the correct firmware for my country.
But with my current Galaxy S2 I had to go to the repair center who used ODIN to get the right version on my phone.
I now have made KIES work on my windows 7 machine. I had to install the UK version (not the country version) and used the connection problem wizard to reinstall the drivers. Now it says I have the current version of my firmware.
To go back to your problem. It would help if you post which OS you are on and which version of the firmware you have currently installed ?
Also have you USB error detection off in the settings of your Galaxy S2 ?
I need the drivers for my old xp-laptop, and tried to install kies with no luck. Any way to get the drivers needed to get my comp to recognise my galaxy s2 i9100?
From Kies in its program folder .
From the latest USB driver thread posted on XDA this week
From a Google search .

Personally I wouldn't be concerned kies isn't really useful, plenty of threads on here about kies messing phones up. There's nothing you can't do yourself without the need of kies. You've already tried everything I can think of. Does kies itself require updating?

nope it does not need an update and i really would like to stay away from odin
Bro don't fear Odin, embrace it. Latest updates sooner, avoid bloatware and no root needed. Never had a problem with it, in fact it saved my phone several times as I'm a flash-a-holic

I have an AT&T Galaxy S2 and a Galaxy Tab 2. I rooted both using different methods. Now my computer wont install the drivers for them and Kies will no longer see them either. Any ideas?
I don't know much about kies, but I do know it is a tool made for stock firmware, so maybe it detects that the devices are rooted.
As far as your computer installing the drivers, I guess you mean USB driver. Look in add/remove programs dialog for "Samsung USB driver for mobile phones." If present you should be set. If not, you can manually install it by downloading from the Samsung site, or on XDA.
usually when we root a phone kies do not work, but there is other option to transfer files like airdroid an app you can download in play store or you can install a custom ROM like shostock that works great and detect the drives automatically for connect the phone to the computer.
I have to update the firmware for my Rogers S3 with Kies but while the phone driver installs correctly when I plug the phone, kies won't recognize that and will ask me to install samsung drivers, then that will fail (see picture) and the update won't happen.
Help!
Uninstall drivers completely and try again.
Hey, try installing the drivers using have-disk method, which is different than simply running an .exe installer. You can download the drivers and find out about installing them at: www.usbdrivers.tk
