I have had my sgs for about a week now, and i have been getting really slow download speeds here in Houston. i mean a constant 1.3 or lower and .3 for uploads
is everyone seeing speeds this slow, i figured i would get at least 4-5 Mbps with this phone. nothing mind blowing but the network seems really slow.
just want some others experiance and if there are links to modems yet, i may just need to flash something different, but could not find threads/links to any.
thanks for the help in advance.
Which network?

Hey guys,
Hoping someone can help me out.
I've been running Android on my TMOUS HD2 for about a month and a half now.
The whole time, I've been getting some lame internet speeds.
I average 250-500Kb/s at best. I've tried two different radios, and neither seems to help. I've been using VBNROM all along.
I decided to restore my phone to factory WinMO, no Android, and after running more speed tests, my speeds are exactly the same.
I've tried a few of the suggested tweaks like unchecking proxy and changing the T-Mo Internet to epc.tmobile.com. None of it helps.
I called t-mobile to make sure I was in a good area, and they said everything looks good on their end, and I should be getting much better speeds.
Can anyone offer any advice?
This is kind of a minor question as I'm happy enough with my phone and operation at this point.
I live in Sacramento, an area where the towers have been upgraded and the fastest I have ever gotten speed test to run is 2.5mbps. I hear people boasting about 5mbps+ speeds on here all the time. I'm just curious if this is likely "just my phone" or if it's that the towers in this city aren't great?
My GPS works pretty well on my rom, but I did crack open my phone and pushed up the gps antenna connector - I actually did this for all the connectors. I have tested this from many locations near and far and Sacramento is a fairly flat city.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Are you running stock? If so try rooting and installing a rom with the newer kernel and modem. People get different speeds with different modems. I currently am running Flagship V3 and it has great signal and awesome download and upload speed.
It's not your phone. It just depends on the network traffic and where you're at. Here in the office... let me test... 2.6 Down and 1.53 up (in Irvine, CA). Sometimes it climbs to the 3Mbs range, and during lunch hours it drops to 1.5Mbs. Near my house however I can hit 5Mbs which doesn't do me much good since I have wifi at home. So worry not young padawan. Just be glad you're not with verizon, you'd be stuck with speeds half as fast than what you're getting now.
yea, I am running Bionix and getting way faster speeds than when I first got the phone (think 50kbps).
I'm really not trying to complain, I'm not trying to download torrents or anything. Just curious.
I'm in sacramento and I get **** data

I've already done the APN fix on these forums, and even with that I've seen no change. I average anywhere from 1.0-2.0 mbps on speedtest. Highest I've seen is 3.8mbps. That's a far cry from 7+.
With my old Infuse 4g in the same areas I've averaged about 5-7 mbps which makes a big difference, so I'm inclined to think something is wrong versus just bad luck.
Also, what gives with even 5-7, shouldn't H+ be hitting 10ish? Looking at the "4g" coverage map for AT&T, I'm smack in the middle of a fast area. I live in central NJ.
Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Which APN are you on? 'phone' or 'wap.cingular'?
I'm grandfathered on one of the old accounts with 'unlimited' data.. and and I have to use wap.cingular..
I assure you, you aren't alone in this gripe.
If I didn't know any better I would call foul on AT&T. When my phone was new, I got anywhere from 1-6.5 at the highest, averaging around 3.5 maybe 4. It seems like as soon as I changed my plan to the 4G unlimited, my speeds refuse to go above 2.
I tries a SIM swap, the usual "fixes" and they even reset the data plan. No change. I haven't got higher than 2mb since June. And they swear up and down they aren't throttling me.
It would be nice if someone could explain this whole data deal.
Have you noticed though that performance doesn't seem slow at all though. My connection, even when streaming video doesn't so much as hiccup.

They might be expecting an influx of SGS2 on their network in the coming weeks and might be trying to discourage excessive data usage and as with any new phone, people tend to download heavily with all the new apps and syncing.
There really shouldn't be any reason for such a big difference in speeds. Highly unlikely the phone itself is faulty as build quality is superb, but might be worth swapping for a new one just to rule it out. If that doesn't fix it, then ATT is must be doing something on their end to specifically limit the speeds of specific types of devices and that shady stuff doesn't surprise me.
Try different modems, as I have noticed a huge difference in speed, from Down/Up 50Kbps/200Kbps (odd) to 400Kbps/215Kbps depending on modem version and congestion, I think my local tower has crappy backhaul as well.
All my data for 3UK in the UK is here
By the way, I also average faster speeds with wap.cingular than the phone APN fix.
How is that possible, as that is directly opposite what MANY on here report?
Running Speedtest just now and seeing I only get 9kbps download. I'm on the non-smartphone data plan and never noticed that my navigating or streaming was reflective of such a slow speed. Does that seem a little too slow? Or is it just me?
are you on edge or on 2g...?

I'm seeing either 3G or H+ indicated.
then there is something wrong with test with 3g you can atleast get 2Mbps....try to load hd video in youtube and see how it goes...
sgs2
Which carrier are you on?
Edit: Checking your last posts seems like you are with AT&T. (correct me if im wrong) 9kbps is definetely way too slow for AT&T. I usually get an average of 3-6Mbps download. Although it is possible the problem is the speedtest. Ive noticed that it sometimes even shows 0-10kbps in certain locations or times.
Hey all,
So i've noticed that after flashing to this new leak from stock GB firmware, my 4g data speeds have dropped significantly. Originally after purchasing this phone i was able to achieve 30mbps consistently. Not too long after i flashed the ICS sandwich leak, just couldn't wait for Verizon! now my 4g speeds don't seem to get over 12mbps very often. The same has happened to my upload speeds but i couldn't tell you the numbers without verifying. My question is has anyone else seen this same situation?? I unfortunately cannot be sure this has been caused by the new ICS radios because a lot was changed in between my test times. Besides the ruu flash, many apps were installed, bloatware was frozen with TB, and a extended battery used. I was hoping to find an answer on here before factory restoring my phone to see if an app caused this, or possibly it is a SIM card issue. I contacted verizon (leaving out a few details on what i had done of course) and they were unable to tell me much besides anything over 10mbps was good speed. Any help with getting my data back to 30mbps would be aprreciated!

You were getting 30Mb/s?!?!? How the heck did you ever get that? Out of tens of thousand of speed tests on Speedtest.net marked "Verizon 4G LTE" less than 50 tests in total even break the 20mbps barrier with the average being about 14Mb/s. In the few rare areas I can actually get 4G around here if I can get 10Mb/s I feel very lucky, and even on Wireless-N in my office, standing right next to a rarely used HP Procurve AP fed via Gig-E directly from our head end router with a 100Mb/s fiber direct connection, I can barely get around 30Mb/s then!

I was completely unaware of that. Where do you find this data on the speedtest site? I believe i have seen many people with even greater speeds then me, but i was able to get that on whatever the stock GB firmware and radios shipped with the phone. That was a typical speed pretty much anywhere i was and even when my service was poor (2 or 3 bars), and i can say for the short time i've lost 4g on this phone it was only for a brief period and that was in what pretty much could be considered a bunker (even then i had full 3g service)
. So i guess i am just lucky in a lighter area than you?? But either way i'd like to get back to that speed!
I've pulled close to 40Mb/s in areas around me so it's more then possible... And that was on the latest firmware.
If you're s-off, you can revert back, just take a look at the firmware thread with ICS and GB firmware combos in the Development section. Until you s-off you're stuck with what you have.

Hmm... my bad... seems people are getting 40-50 in certain areas at times, not around here though, too many oil field workers I guess causing excessive data traffic in western ND I guess. Nevermind.

just like my signature below?? lol and that was thee app. they say to use the site itself because the app gives you slower results.
oh and to the OP.. if you notice my sig as well, that is the speed currently even after on the new ICS Leak. so i honestly couldnt help because i dont have that problem unfortunately. hope you do get the issue resolved though.

No over 4G
Speed test results can vary depending on the time of day. If I run a test between 6am and 10pm I average 15-20mbps But if I run a test at 2AM I can hit 45-55mbps.(same average results on GB or ICS Firmware) Just sharing what I have learned and that is speeds will depend on the local network load. The more people using it the slower. The less people using it the faster. (Can anybody truly tell a difference after 15 to 20 mbps? I can't.) So I don't think its the phone or firmware. I also think it's just timing and also the degrade in speed is probably cause people are upgrading to 4G phones wich in turn loads the network taking away bandwith that was previously available. But if you get back to GB Firmware and speeds comeback up, let me know. I would be very curious to find out why and would crack open the radios to see what changed.
When I first got my Rezound in January, I got 28M down/14M up consistently all day long. When I did the OTA update it immediately dropped down to 5-10M down/5M up. That's it. I've tried every newer set of radio/firmware files and it doesnt get better at all.

Really? That's weird. I've always had mine between 8-12 except when I got into big cities it seems to be between 15-30 mbps with the new leak.
