In order to do both, you have to have the paid version. And there is no option for monthly schedules, at least not on the free one.
Go under schedules and set it up. For full backup, choose 'backup all user apps & system data.' For apps only, choose 'backup user apps'

TB is a beast. So many utilities. What you want to do is use the batch feature. Press the icon that looks like a paper with a check through it. They will have all your batch operations you need, and their categorized.
If you want to set up schedules. You'll see that there are three bubbles on every screen. Overview, Backup/Restore, Schedules. Click on Schedules. You can edit and create as many as your heart desires. And choose what you want them to do.
Like somebody else posted. There is no monthly scheduling. But you can set up a schedule and run it manually.
I also use the same paid version of TB across multiple devices. Kindle Fire and Evo. Also a nice feature is the upload to dropbox. It'll upload your backup to your dropbox account. This is helpful incase you lose or break your phone. You'll still have the latest backup.

Why would you want to adjust? If you're restoring, it makes sense to restore the most recent backup, no?
Otherwise use manual mode for older versions.

Like somebody said, if you do a batch restore, it'll to the latest version. But TB is set to have a maximum of 1 backup. You can go into preferences and change this to how many backups per app you want.
Then if you want to restore an app to an older version. You click once on the app, click restore, it'll ask you what backup you want to restore from. But this has to be done on an individual basis.
I don't understand what you mean by having different devices. Each devices stores information seperate from each other. Ofcourse you can always force information from one device to another (by loading it onto the devices storage).

The only thing is I have quite a few apps, around 120. Going one by one to restore them takes some time. Is there a way to auto install them without me having to press install on each one?

That is a feature of the paid version of Titanium Backup. When you send the developer a payment on pay pal, he will send you a file with a license key to unlock the pro features that you place on the root of your internal sd card. I highly recommend paying for it as it saves a lot of time and hassle.

I wish AppBrain would do this too.
Lastly, I just switched over from the HTC EVO. The Cyanomod ROM (CM6) has remote backups through Google, so it will install the apps automagically. I'm pretty sure this is a Froyo thing, but CM6 is the only ROM I know of that does the auto-download/install thing.

I just found out MyBackUp Pro does batch installs as well. I hadn't used it for a while but if you have root you are able to install everything plus fix the market links as well.

How do you like the vibrant compared to the evo? I had the evo for a week and liked it but I think the vibrant will have be the phone for me especially once cm6 is ported over
Mybackup pro does a good job too I use it because I flash like 3 times a week...it puts all your apps back as well as data if you tell it to.

Could be IMO, but Titanium is 1000 X's better than My Backup Pro. Everything about Titanium is better, and the developer is amazing.
I'm sure google will do its part but it only restores my contacts, calender, & gmail I believe. I usually use Titanium Backup to restore my apps+settings but it will not work since my 3D won't be rooted.

honestly just bite the bullet and restore everything from the market and sdcard and set everything back up . to prevent troubles
Lets first think about rooting before moving the rooted files over lol.
waiting patiently for root to occur first.. then, load up all the apps and data FRESH.

yeah, guess you're right. forgot quite a few of my apps only work if rooted. not just TB. so other than manually writing down what apps I have installed, whats best to use to reinstall my apps (without their settings)

AppBrain can help, you can create a list of apps and restore to your new phone.
Honestly, though, for a new install, the Android Market does a great job now of installing. Go to My Library (I believe) and you will have a list of your apps. Just click to install each one you want on your new phone. I found that if you queue up too many at once, you might get an error, but that was on my OG EVO, so it may have had to do with memory limitations more than the process. This doesn't give you a listing of currently installed, so if you have too many extra apps that you have removed from your previous phone, you might have a bit of sorting to do.
Iv e been playing with this method of reinstalling with my last few ROM changes and it works just about as well as TB or anything else (assuming you know what apps you're installing). I guess it's a little trickier if you have apps from different sources (Amazon, etc.)
I doubt hes very worried about re installing all his apps,thats fairly easy. logining into all the services/apps you use is the annoying part. as far as I know,only a rooted app can restore that type of data,which is unfortunate.

I'd be wary of letting any of the backup apps restore services, bluetooth pairing, etc. across devices. Might be okay, but if it's not, you'll probably have wasted a lot more time fixing it than doing it the sure way the first time.

It only transfers contacts from the evo 4g.
MyBackup Pro transfers everything over, but I lost nearly all of my app settings. By the time we get root I'll already have all of my settings restored manually. Getting my saved game files from titanium will be nice though.

With updates of ROMs being released so quickly, and not wanting to update rather than flash the full ROM, I'm going to start backing up using Titanium Backup.
I am quite happy to backup absolutely everything, but am cautious about restoring things like system settings. Ideally what I would like is to be able to restore all the apps that I had before, their data, and possibly the layout of my homescreens.
How would I do this?
Is there anything I should probably not restore that could mess things up?

You can backup all apps and data and then restore them later, without worrying about side-effects. This backup will include your launcher and therefore screen layouts, but will not include widgets. You'll need to add them again manually after you restore (it's a permission thing - nothing other that your is allowed to put widgets on your home screens).
System settings is a different story. If you're going from one ROM to another, or changing FW, there could be conflicts and it could cause problems. I tend to always have a backup and only restore system settings if I need to factory reset for some reason.
If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend paying for the pro version, as it can become very boring having to click a couple of buttons for every app you want to restore. The pro version does all apps without the need for interaction.
The easiest way is this: go into titanium backup and press the menu bitten on your phone. Then press batch. Then look for something that says backup all user apps. Click the bitten next to that that says run. Then check 'backup user apps + data' and then uncheck any apps you don't want backed up, and then click run on the bottom. This will backup all your downloaded apps and data, like saved games, etc. You can also do the same things for system apps, but I can't guarantee that they will all work. Hope this helps

If you click batch all your apps are selected so you can backup all your apps with 1 clicks, even with the unpaid version. However with the paid version you can set up scheduled backups so it will backup automatically every week, or whenever you set it to

That's the process mate - you've got it.
Titanium Backup requires that you have USB debugging enabled, which you get to via Settings, Applications, Development.
As for backing up and restoring text messages, I simply could not recommend any higher an application called SMS Backup+ (free in the Market). It creates a folder in your Gmail account and automatically uploads all text messages to that folder. You can do a restore whenever you like. It's seamless and works perfectly. If you want to keep SMS then look no further! I've gone over easily 30 ROM flashes with it, and now a new phone, and have never lost a single message.
It also means, of course, that you can access you SMS from any browser, which is nice (Can't send from gmail though.)

Ok, last question. Can I just have usb debugging enabled at the time that I backup and at the time that I restore. I prefer to not have it checked generally - lots of annoying pop up messages on my PC at work etc...

You might be able to backup and restore the data for touchwizz, not tried.
As far as system data, if the item is green in titanium is ok to restore, if its red, beware.
AFAIK, TouchWiz is just another launcher, so you should be okay to restore, but pay attention to the item colour, as mentioned by veyka.

I'm not sure about this one as I've seen different things happen. Sometimes, I've had apps installed again after a new ROM flash, but other times that hasn't happened. I've also had inconsistent results with restoring wifi settings. The only thing I generally rely on Google to store is my contacts. Other than that, I use Titanium for everything, just to be sure.

a) how do I backup my MS exchange emails?
b) how do I backup my contacts? (I always save them to my Google account so will it just update them once I put the new ROM on and it will sync automatically?)
c) Can I put the new CheckROM on my phone and then flash a new 'safe' kernel?

Titanium Backup is a great app
Well, as far as what you're concerned with, you don't need TB. Just add the account after you flash your new rom and they should sync right back. At least ot applies to those emails and contacts you mentioned. Apps require a specialist backup app like TB. SMS can be backed up using SMS backup and restore.
And yes you can flash your rom and flash the kernel

Change Rom --> lost all Data and Settings go TB one click and baam back to normal. But i have to say it doesn't always do everything very clean and can mess up some stuff. I always like to install very clean so I format sd card and wipe everything before new roms and that prevents sooooo many unwanted issues but you loose all your data and have to start from scratch. I only use TB to backup app savedata from games which is awesome.
Summed up: TB is awesome but not perfect, you might run into issues.

Likewise, I've been using tb for years with no problems whatsoever.. Until last week.
I restored my backups as normal, but a couple of apps misbehaved.. push notifications didn't work, and Gmail wouldn't auto refresh.
Turns out the device id got screwed up. Tb offered to restore the old one, but that didn't work either. Took bloody hours to sort it out.
Generally though, tb is awesome!

I see lots of people restoring data or app backups after a clean ROM flash. Do you think this adds of the instability problems so many people have, while others have very few problems?
I have done it on five phones, countless ROMs and have never ever once had a single issue.
I could never ever NOT restore data.
It's like losing everything I ever did on the app [whether it be countless hours of Ski Safari, Angry Birds, etc]. However on apps like Facebook, twitter, and stuff like that, I could live without the data, but it's nice because I don't have to relogin.
I bounce around on several ROMs from time to time checking out whether I want to run one or another as a daily. Been jumping over to AOSP and AOKP recently to try to get things going, but haven't gotten things quite to my liking.
The ability to reload my entire ICS Sense 3.6 system with a quick Nandroid restore has been invaluable and made that possible. I even store older Nandroids on my PC, and keep an extra one on my sdcard (well, it is 64g) in case I want to roll back a few versions to experiment.
For instance, when Amon Ra 3.16 came out with the fix for rooting in the dev options, I restored my original Global RUU install that I couldn't root with 3.15, rooted it, then backed it up for legacy purposes.
Same thing with my tablet; have played with several ROMs for my tablet, emboldened by the fact that I can always roll back a Nandroid.

You misunderstand the premise of the question, we're not talking about nandroids. We're referring to changing ROMs and then restoring data and apps from the old ROM to the new ROM. I see people doing this all the time, then they litter the threads complaining of things not working. I don't doubt it's possible to do this on a select and intelligent basis, but in the general population I don't think it works well.
I use gobackup (the older version cuz its free lol) and it restores data fine including game levels and all that good stuff like Facebook sign in

I see people doing this all the time, then they litter the threads complaining of things not working. I don't doubt it's possible to do this on a select and intelligent basis, but in the general population I don't think it works well.

Apologies. There are many kinds of backups. As to those kind of backups, before preparing to switch ROMs, I run App2zip backing up all my apps and data to a flashable zip file. Once the new ROM is settled in, I will flash that back. Some apps are routinely not well-behaved on restore, e.g. Swiftkey, PowerAmp, and those I'll simply uninstall then restore a Titanium backup.
I have had very little problems restoring app data this way. The one thing I do NOT do is restore the actual \data partition itself in between ROM flashes, and I don't just batch restore from Titanium or from Rerware's MyBackupPro. Those are for piecemeal restores when data in a particular app becomes problematic.
I agree that you can't just "run a restore" and expect good results; but if you're deliberate and careful about it, you can minimize disruption between ROM flashes.
As often as I flash, I'd never have a working phone if I didn't do restores. I restore apps and selectively restore app data...mainly games, and apps that are a pain to set up.

When I use adb to backup I only make it backup apps/there apk never do system or shared, things like media and personal files I take off of the phone and put on pc before adb. There's several ways to backup your contacts to current places so you don't have to type them in again

You mean you don't let Google restore your backups automatically? I assumed everyone did that... weird.

I hate that. Half the time it ends up restoring stuff I've already uninstalled.
