Copy and paste? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody used copy and paste successfully on this phone? I noticed that Chrome crashes every time I tried to copy something to clipboard. Initially I thought its just Chrome, but then I realised it crashes any app I try to copy and paste in.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

I've copy and pasted within emails and texting so far without a problem. Don't think I've tried web browsing, let me test it now...
...worked fine when copying/pasting within google search bar
edit:
stock browser

This is very strange. I can copy from the stock browser, but not paste whatever I copied.
When I longpress to paste it pops up with "Clipboard", but when I click it it doesn't paste anything. Anybody seen this before?

I cant copy from any app now. It just crashes

Works fine for me. If you're feeling adventurous (as in "risk" you warranty), try flashing the stock ROM with Odin for your region (or the new update!) and see if you still have this problem.

As far as I know I'm on the latest version. I had s look at the log that gets sent to google and the clipboard is throwing NullReferenceException. Screen shot attached.

A reset fixed it for me

I have the same issue... also had it on my rooted SGS2 on various ICS roms with various launchers... very annoying!

Tab 7.7 also.....for the second time after reset.....but I will not reset everytime
ICS

I've just tried to copy some frazes form here and paste it in google search bar with sucsess. As well can do it in text message form here.

Great solution!
ROOT your device, install ROOT Explorer, navigate to / > data > clipboard, select ALL and delete all, than go into your Settings > Applications Manager > All, look for TestServices, than remove updates/clear data. Reboot and everything should be fine.
Thank you Jaj6503!

I just started having this problem out of the blue on my sgsIII.
Only a hard reset fixed it since I am not rooted
What could be causing this? I'm thinking Google Chrome since that was the last app I installed before it started happening

I had this same issue and resolved it. If you are rooted, use ES explorer (or any other root file manager) go to \data\clipboard from root directory and delete all the files, reboot your device and the issue should be resolved.

Thank You!

Patched Gallery3D app, anybody tried it ?

Speaking about this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752007
More information about it here: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/patched-gallery3d-for-higher-resolution/
Since this app is included in the Samsumg rom, we would have to flash it. Anyone willing to be the guinea pig and see if it works (and is worth it) ?
Guinea pig here. Does nothing but a FC loop.
- oh well, thanks for trying at least !
Flashing doesn't work on I9000 either, but the .apk works. You just have to uninstall the existing gallery3d with root explorer, and then reboot, go to settings-manage applications and unintall the leftovers of the gallery. Then install the .apk with astro or similar.
I only did he update. I am going to try the longer way in a bit to test.

So, I was able to get the updated Gallery3dm.apk loaded onto my Vibrant. Using AndroidMate, I copied the original \system\app\gallery3d.apk to my SDcard (as a backup), then deleted the \system\app\gallery3d.apk from my system + the corresponding ODEX file. Reboot. Next, I copied the Gallery3dm.apk (updated version) from my SDcard to \system\app, selected it, and chose Install. Worked fine.
My thoughts? It does have a higher quality when you zoom in, but it seems to have some drawbacks too -- like VERY low-res versions of the files upon first load (and after, it seems), some display strangness (graphic tearing), and the occasional lag. Most of all, the difference is not THAT noticeable. You can check out the *before* and *after* attachments I've uploaded.
I'll be going back to the original Gallery3D.apk for now, but I sincerely hope that Samsung (or whoever) can figure out how to allow for crisp zooming in.
Thanks,
Yip
Were you able to switch back to the old gallery?
(On i9000):
I've tried putting my backup copy of Gallery3D.apk (and odex) into /system/app but it doesn't do anything (doesn't appear in apps menu etc).
If I click on the Gallery3D.apk to try install it, it asks if I want to replace existing system application (yes) but ends up with "Application not installed".
It seems I'll have to stick to the Gallery3Dm till my next FW flash.
Edit:
Oh nvm, seems a reboot did the trick

[Q] Copy/paste into music folder is not working

I can not copy/paste any music (mp3) into the music folder.
I get "Device has either stopped responding or been disconnected".
I then go back, bring up the Movies folder and it pastes into that just fine.
Anyone else having this issue, or should I be uploading music onto my prime in a different manner than opening files and copying/pasting?
Factory rest fixed the issue. I hadn't put muchon this yet so I thought I,d give it a try. I was surprised to see ICS remained. I thought with the reset it would revrt back to honeycomb, but it did not.
I simply can't write to the Music folder. Just tells me it has failed. I can't delete the music files in there. Same goes with the Pictures folder.
What gives?
Just for grins, I tried to paste into my Music folder and had no issues. It's a stock Prime (non-rooted) with ICS. (I used ES File Explorer on the Prime to do the copy.) I even tried it with my music player running with no problems.
Is some syncing program perhaps tying up your Music folder? Hard to believe any syncing program would actually be able to modify your folder permissions. Personally, I'd try stopping Asus Sync (my primary suspect, and I am NOT running it) and perhaps also look at my running tasks and kill anything that has to do with music and try it again.
Mine is stock and right out of the box. Tried copying to the Music folder from USB - and Moving files from SD Card to internal storage using BOTH ES File Explorer and the "pre-loaded" File Manager program.
ES File Explorer tells me "pasting failed" and the File Manager just says "Unable to Paste" or something similar.
I don't have Asus Sync running either and I've rebooted the tablet thinking there was an issue with something holding it up.
I also can not delete the Music files that are pre-installed in that folder nor can I delete the Pictures out of the picture folder!
I dunno?!?!?

I had thought that had something to do with my issue. I was able to delete the preinstalled music songs from the Music folder, but, not really as when I turned my TFP on those files still showed up and played. It was then I tried to load mp3 into the Music folder and I got the error message.
Also, weird, after the factory reset, those preinstalled music songs/files are no longer there. Very odd.
It was only the music file that I had issues with. All other files worked fine. Before I did the reinstall I pasted a few music files into the "Movies", they went in OK and the stock music player, along with the "My Net" app located and played them without issue.
I tried a reboot but it did nothing. It was the factory reset that fixed the issue.
Oh, my TFP is out of box, no root, nothing special otherwise. Sync running.
Has anybody else tried a factory reset to verify this fixes the issue? I am having the same issue that the paste fails when trying to add to the music folder. I don't really want to go through a factory reset since everything else is working just to find out it didn't fix the issue. Thanks.

I wouldn't want to do a factory reset, either.
Try a hard reset (cold boot) instead, and see if that works. Just open up a paper clip and stick it in the little hole just below the microSD card slot on your Prime -- your Prime will reboot. You lose nothing with a hard reset -- and it can do a lot of good. Some folks recommend that you do a hard reset before firmware updates to clean things up and be safe -- I did this before the ICS update.

I figured as much, as you tried everything else! It is still worth a try for others. It seems all of our Primes are acting a little differently.
Just out of curiosity, have any of you looked at the permissions on your Music folder in ES File Explorer? Mine is "drw"... Wondering if some app changed yours to Read only.
Theres no quick fix

I do not have this issue, but when I did a full reset to clear some other issues (successfully) it wasn't all that bad. In fact, if you have selected the choices to backup your Google Account and settings, the worst of it is the wait for apps to re-download. I am not rooted, so could not use Titanium Backup, but the Market did a fine job of restoring my apps. All 170 f them, LOL. Took about 50 minutes. The only items I had to manually set were things like "Allow Unknown Sources" and a few similar items. Less than an hour, AND I have the satisfaction that I now have a "clean" ICS installation.

I did not.
I had not invested a lot of time inputting info and such on my Prime as of yet so, after trying the hard reset to no avail, I just said, **** it, wipe everything and start again.
No problems since.
Hmm reset work?
I have noticed, though, that whenever I copy/paste a mp3 file into the music file it asks if I am sure I want to continues as "Your device may not be able to play or view this file."
Anyone else get this?
Yes, I get that with my Nexus as well. It's just windows being windows. I think it has something to do with the new file system as I never got it with my Thunderbolt or, my original TF.
Haven't had a file copy over that hasn't played so I just hit the continue button.

just an update.
My friend's Prime encountered the same problem. He couldn't upload any files into the "Music" directory.
After checking out this thread, I told him to do a factory rest, and It worked.
Now problem solved. So anyone has same problem, the factory reset do work.
Here's what I did when I couldn't copy and paste into the music folder. I just deleted the music folder, named the new folder Music with my new music in it and copied and pasted the entire folder in place of the stock music folder and it worked just fine. Did the same thing with the movie folder too.

I renamed the two folders and created new ones with the original names. It seems fine, but I can't delete the old folders.
checked the properties of the music folder. It is set to read and write. I was also able to rename it. Still wont let me delete it though. oh well, if this is the only problem I end up having with my prime I will b extremely happy.

[A] Can't Defrost apps with Titanium Backup on ICS

I didn't notice anyone had a posted a solution to this problem, so I thought I'd do so in case anyone else ran into it.
I was able to freeze apps fine with Titanium Backup on the latest ICS leak (XXLPB as of right now) but ran into some problems when I wanted to defrost them. Titanium Backup said they were defrosted successfully but they still were listed as frozen and didn't appear in the app drawer.
Here is how to solve the problem:
1. Find /data/system/packages.xml with Root Explorer or an equivalent
2. Make a backup of packages.xml right away in the same folder in case we mess anything up any need to restore it later
3. Copy packages.xml onto the root of your internal or external storage
4. Plug your device into your computer and copy packages.xml from the root of your storage over to your computer
5. Open the packages.xml on your computer with your editor of choice - I suggest Notepad++
6. Search for the string {enabled="2"} (without the { }). Every line ending in this represents a frozen app. The lines should look something like this:
Code:
<package name="com.sec.android.widgetapp.socialhub" codePath="/system/app/SocialHubWidget.apk" nativeLibraryPath="/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.socialhub/lib" flags="1" ft="11b7e237e00" it="11b7e237e00" ut="11b7e237e00" version="1" sharedUserId="10001" [COLOR="Red"]enabled="2"[/COLOR]>
7. Now for every app you wish to unfreeze, replace {enabled="2"} with {enabled="1"} (again, without the {})
7. Save packages.xml, move it back onto your phone's storage, and use Root Explorer or an equivalent to replace your original packages.xml at /data/system/packages.xml with your new one
8. Reboot

See this post for a way to freeze and unfreeze system apps without messing with the packages.xml file. Thanks polzovotel.
Will doing this then allow titanium backup to freeze/defrost apps as it should, or do I have to do this each time I want to defrost an app?
You will have to do this each time you want to defrost an app.
However, I would imagine it would be pretty trivial for a dev to make an app to automate the process. Unfortunately, I don't have the coding knowledge to do that.
Seems daft I cannot defrost apps on Android 4 in titanium or my tool box just doesn't work.
Not really getting any help from the app developers either!

Hmmm, so you both have some apps successfully defrosted using this method and some not. And I'm assuming you have double checked to make sure you did the process correctly and made the changes to the right app references in the file.
I'm just brainstorming here, but can you think of anything that the apps which didn't defrost have in common? Are they all user apps, systems apps, on SD, protected apps,...etc?
cant defrost
umm, first scuse my "english"
maybe something is not function well in my phone
but i think too that the problem are some apps that has variuos services running
have you tried using the gemini app?
thanks

replace {enabled="true"} with {enabled="1"}
There is a nice option in in the ICS rom itself - to disable/enable applications. So there is no need to deal with the packages.xml file - just use native interface:
For me - working w/o any issues.

That is a good solution, but it only works for system apps. Otherwise if it is a user app your only choice is total uninstallation... which is less than ideal in some circumstances.
I thought I found a work around for user apps by using Titanium backup to convert them to system apps so you could disable them through the native interface...but this led to apps disappearing from the system... so it looks like it isn't a viable workaround.

[Q] camera not working

My sgs2 camera stopped working since i changed from GB to ICS 3 days ago. Whenever i launch the camera app the screen goes black and after 25secs a message pops up saying: "unfortunately, Camera has stopped." I'm currently using Criskelo Servan Team ICS V5 rom. Can someone give me some help to fix this problem since i cannot post on developers thread to get help from there.
thanks.
It's weired, i had the exact same problem... but somehow it got fixed by itself.
Whenever I wanted to launch the camera (either by the lockscreen shortcut or inside the app drawer) the screen turned black and after a few seconds it went back to the home screen.
I don't know why but now the camera is working perfectly.
I don't know what happened to make it work so I'm sorry I can't really help. The last thing i did to launch the camera though was through google maps. I selected a place and now you can choose "add a picture". I selected it thinking that the camera app wouldn't be able to launch again but BOOM ! it did anyway.
Before that I grabed another camera app on the store just to check if the hardware was still ok and the app worked fine.
Anyway, I have the same rom as you so I just wanted to say that the camera CAN work with this rom.
Well I tried what you did and I'm still getting the same: "Unfortunately, Camera stopped" message. So I'm back to square 1.

Hello everyone !
First of all thank you for sharing your tips and knowlegde... this is a nice community !
So I've tried to just copy it and past it in my SGS2 (after renaming the original Camera.apk) and it crashes from the beginning, always. I'm on crsikelservan ICS V5 Rom version. (XXLPQ)
Any advice ?
Thank you
You have to use "root explorer" and mount it in R/W mode.
1. go into the criskelo servan rom v5 that should be in your internal sd.
2.Open the rom folder then go into the apps folder and find the camera.apk file.
3. Extract the file, you'll then get a pop up asking if you would like to go to that folder where the camera.apk file was extracted to or stay in the current folder.
4. Select the "go to that folder" option, you would see the camera.apk there.
5. long press on the camera.apk and select the "move" option. You should be now in the parent folder after selecting that option (if not go there!).
6.From in the parent folder go into the system folder and paste the "camera.apk" file in the apps folder.
7. Pop up should appear asking if you want to overwrite the camera.apk that's there already, select overwrite.
8. Close root explorer and launch your camera, it should be working fine now.
NOTE: I did this as well to fix my Bluetooth that wasn't working as well from my Criskelo Servan Rom V5. I wasn't getting any bluetooth options when I launched my Bluetooth. After repeating the same process I used above (just replacing the Bluetooth.apk instead) I was able to get all Bluetooth options and functions.
ALSO NOTE: I give thanks to the ephraim033whose advice I used to correct my camera issue (link attached in my last post) as well as 078gregory Which without their knowledge I would not be able to solve my camera issue! SO IF THIS POST HELPED YOU HIT THE THANKS BUTTON HERE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, CHECK OUT MY LAST POST AND THANK EPHRAIM033 THAT HELPED ME BY VIEWING THE LINK THERE AND THANKING HIM AS WELL & 078GREGORY WHO POSTED PREVIOUSLY IN THIS THREAD.

Incredibly Persistent Bloatware

Hello people!
I've been having this problem for a while now, in fact, it's the very reason I rooted in the first place.
I've asked on other less-active forums, and received no answer at all, so I thought I'd turn to you.
My carrier, Tesco Mobile has bundled two bloatware game demos onto my Huawei Ideos X3 and they are taking up a substantial amount of my already poor internal memory. Unfortunately, after having tried many different ways of removing them, I have had no success. I will list the ways in which I have attempted to remove them in chronological order as far as I can remember (this has been going on for about 4 months now):
The game demos are TBloxxNY and BrickBreaker, if that helps at all >_>
Rooted and downloaded several free root file explorers (such as Android Mate) and attempted to uninstall the game demos - Failed
Installed Titanium Backup & Root Pro to see if it could delete them - Failed (Says "Cannot Locate .apk")
Installed ES File Explorer (said to be better than the others)
- Mounted system as writable
- Found full pathname of the game demo apk's: /cust/tesco/gb/app/brickbreake.apk which is an unusual place for them
- Attempted to delete - Failed
- Managed to locate packages elsewhere and managed to delete them - No effect
Went back to Titanium Backup with a writable system to force remove - Failed
Used Titanium Backup to Freeze the apps so they were unusable - Success!
Tried using Titanium Backup to convert them to user apps - Failed
Scoured Google for someone with a similar problem - Failed
--Left it for ages--
Installed Android Terminal Emulator
Used ES File Explorer to mount system as writable
Used Command Line to remove the file using the correct pathname - Failed
Realised Busybox wasn't actually installed
Installed Busybox, used Busybox installer app to run the mount rw script
Went back to terminal emulator and tried to remove them - Failed
--Fudged up my phone by using "Fix Permissions" in Clockworkmod Recovery--
Restored from previous Nandroid Backup
Booted into Clockworkmod Recovery
Wiped all data, cache and Dalvik
Flashed Eclipse ROM
Game demos are still there.
Attempted most of the above again with Eclipse ROM installed - Failed
Wut. I don't understand how Tesco has managed to jam these demos on there that I just cannot remove.
Someone please help me :crying:
Sorry it's such a long post, but I'm getting to my wit's end here...
Go to Huawei service center and say this : "remove these damn things, and i'll give u 1000 dollars.".

Hi, a good way to find where that bloatwares is to use logcat via adb to find the package name of those apps and search in your /system/app.
Via terminal emulator what did you find? Did you get some error when trying delete the apk?

I find running the command "dumpsys" on the device even better to correlate the app name with its installation files. The output is very verbose, so you'll need to capture the output and look at it with your favourite editor, although.
Oh i know WHERE they are, it's getting rid of them that's the problem... lol the kicker here is that, since the phone is rooted, I don't think I could even go back to Tesco and ask them to remove the bloaters -_-;

There are ways to unroot but you can use a free app called root browser (has an orange folder symbol when installed) to go to the location they are saved and delete the apk files yourself. It can change their read write attributes too in case that is what stops you deleting them.
You can also use an app called system tuner to stop them starting as well so then they at least won't use up ram by auto starting.

What, wow that... actually worked!
Thank you very much!
But... why did it work? Why did that file explorer work over ES file explorer and all the others?
I don't understand...

Yes that is it, root browser lite by jrummy. On mine it has an orange folder as its icon but it may have changed in recent updates.

Here's hoping that you still check this forum!
Hi. I have also had space issues with my huawei blaze and after rooting my phone, I followed all the advice mentioned in this post but am still receiving an error message when trying to delete brickbeaker and tbloxxny from /cust/tesco/gb/app using root browser.
I am at my wits end! Do you or anyone else have any idea why these apk's are so persistent and how I can remove them?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
