Have a question regarding unlocking the bootloader (I bolded the actual question for the TLDNR people), I will point out I did a search on the 4 main EVO 4G LTE forums and then just the Android Development forum and did not come up with anything I saw that pertained to this. So please keep the "Do a search" comments to a minimum, I know how it goes on these forums.
Firstly, I created an account on htcdev.com to unlock my new EVO's bootloader so I can flash custom splash screens and whatnot. I did not see the HTC EVO 4G LTE listed in their supported devices drop down menu, so I am assuming this is not currently supported by those means atm? Secondly, I saw that it will void your warranty (I don't mind this as I am already rooted but I don't want HTC having record of this tied to my S/N) and that it will wipe all data on the phone in the process.
My question is: is there an alternative way to unlock the bootloader and install ClockWorkMod/AmonRa(sp?) recoveries via some 1 click method here just like the root method that will not wipe my phone in the process? I don't plan on flashing any custom ROMs as the stock ROM is fine for me (that is until an update is released) but I would like to flash a custom splash screen, possibly a better boot animation, a new notification bar battery icon and perform Nand backups.
Thank you in advance for any friendly information that can point me in the right direction. If any of my assumptions are wrong regarding the htcdev.com process, please correct me.
Choose 'All Other Supported Models' at htcdev.com
Unlocking Bootloader, you must wipe clean. One option is, without unlocking, root your device via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577 which will add superuser access to your stock rom.
Then download your favorite backup app such as Titanium Backup, backup your system files and apps. Afterwards, unlock bootloader via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919 . restore apps/system data. flash your mods to your hearts' content
Htcdev is only way currently. Why does it matter if you register for the token with HTC. Do you suspect that will somehow be used against you at some point? Do you see yourself ever contacting HTC needing warranty repair? Do you have insurance?
Most repair and replace is done thru sprint. And if you have insurance, HTC is even further removed.
sent from a shining jewel 4g LTE
I don't have insurance on the phone, and don't plan on breaking it but you never know what could happen in a year. I was just skeptical when it says this will void your warranty and wondering if HTC will keep tabs on who did what when/if a warranty repair comes along down the road. Normally one would just unroot their device and blam, the warranty is 'restored'.

When the unlock process is complete, will a recovery be installed to the device or will I have to manually do that myself?

You will still need to flash recovery. I've rooted for wifi tether and titanium but will wait till I grow tired of stock to unlock, recovery, ROM.
There is a video tutorial on YouTube for this method.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
It unlocks, roots, and flashes twrp recovery at the same time.
Thanks for all the help. I'll decide if I wanna unlock it yet or not. Being rooted seems good enough thus far
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE using Tapatalk
Nevermind, this does not apply. Please delete this (when a mod sees it).
The only way is HTCdev but there is a one click method that will do it for you. Unlocking the bootloader will automatically wipe your device. And there is an RUU to remove the tampered message if you need to get it fixed.

I was trying to perma root my EVO 3D with the revolutioary tool but it didnt support my bootloader (HBoot 1.5). Is ther another way I can perma or at least temp root my phone?
If I'm not mistaken you have to use htc's method of unlocking your phone with the hboot you have. Its quite a few threads on this particular subject in q & a. I don't think rev supports that hboot as of yet. If you want the link here it is
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
But I strongly suggest you read the method htc provides to be sure its the route you want to take. Also you should.definitely read read read the q & a to gain a better understanding of what it is and to get users feedback and experiences. I don't personally recommend this method htc uses but I think its the only way to unlock and gain root to your phone with your particular hboot. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have unlocked my boot loader using HTC's method and now I'm confused on how to root my phone. I'm new to this as u probably can tell. Thanks again.
You have to flash a recovery. Either twrp or clock work mod. If you choose clock work mod then you can download rom manger from the market and flash it from there. If you chose twrp the you can look Here for the latest

1.5 was an ambush ! It plugged the temp root hole, it has also jacked up installing any roms so far on mine...
Do not go near the latest 2 sprint updates !!!!
As for htc unlocker, its a peice of crap and doesnt work on about 40% of phones spring tech support mgr told me when i called to demand a defination of an error code it gives...
And they refuse to support it
sprint bastages are as bad a apple scum...
HTC method works just as well as regular unlock.. it doesn't not work with 40% of phones either. 40% of people just can't follow a simple tutorial...

Actually jlear3 it does not ! If you read the htc unlocker page it directly tells you that evo 3d is exempt from the working unlocker pgm
With 1.5 you cant do jack ! No recovery , no temp root, no roms, nothing !!!! What part of that do you not understand....
My phone came with 1.5 and have been able to use htc unlock and flash anything I want.

I agree. It's not hard to follow a tutorial. My replacement phone shipped with hboot 1.50, I was unaware that the original root method I used on my original 3D wouldn't work, which directed me to htc's unlocker. I unlocked, and was able to get TWRP recovery as well as superuser, flashed a ROM and have been pretty good so far. The only thing I'm aware you can not do is flash radios. Custom Kernel's are available via fastboot, but I haven't delved into that yet.

Hello fellow xda forum-goers
First, to start out, I will lay out a list of my previously owned phones...
Samsung Epic 4G -> Nexus S 4G -> HTC Evo 4G LTE
I have to say I am a bit confused when it comes to gaining root access on this particular phone. It is my first HTC branded phone and I have noticed that there are some changes/discussion with regards to rooting/flashing it.
There seems to be a commotion or skepticism with regards to achieving root with this phone, something about S-Off and your phone becoming tampered. What is the reason for not wanting to root your phone now and why? What exactly does S-Off and tampered status do?
Edit: Also what is with the whole RUU/Unlock debate? Am I voiding my warrenty or taking any risks with only rooting the phone? What cant I do with just a simple root?
Thanks again!
A little search a little read the sickies in the development section will do wonders

A comparison
Rooting and S-Off are separate entities.
Rooting
Allows superuser permissions that you otherwise do not have. It presumably gets its name from having access to the 'root folders and files' where the phone's OS stuff is and where the devs alter things to make our phones neater! After rooting, you can tether, back up your app data using something like Titanium back up. SetCPU is a root-app that allows you to over and underclock the CPU, but I don't know how this app is compatible with the EVO LTE. There are other apps that are useful, but not really for me. Some taboo apps like Wifikill and droidsheep require root as well but have been pulled from the market, for obvious reasons. Rooting voids warranty, but you can unroot and no one will know.
S-Off
S-Off is a security flag. You can have root and be S-On. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but S-off = unlocked bootloader. And unlocked bootloader means that you can flash ROMs that have not been digitally signed by HTC (you can flash custom roms made by developers here). The only ROMs you can flash with S-On are RUUs, ROMs from HTC in this case. Also, having an unlocked bootloader allows you to install a custom recovery. A custom recovery is handy because you can create a Nandroid back up of your phone. Kind of like an image of a PC. If you mess your phone up, you can restore it to a mirror image of whenever you created the Nandroid. Also, custom recoveries are where you flash custom ROMs and MODs that developers make. Unlocking your bootloader/gaining S-Off voids your warranty. And with htc-dev, which lets you unlock the bootloader, HTC pretty much can keep track of who voids their warranty. If you wait a while, some Dev around here should whip up some way to S-off without HTC knowing. the Rewal method currently posted in the And-Development forum for EVO LTE might do this, I'm not sure.
So... in summary...
Rooting
Use cool apps
Tether
Super user permissions
S-Off/Unlocked bootloader
Custom recovery
Flash custom ROMS and MODS
Create Nandroid Backups
I think thats it. Someone correct any misinformation I gave.

Oh, and as for the tampered questions, when you gain root access, htc put in some code that in the bootloader is says TAMPERED. But unrooting removes this.
Thanks again typhoonikan for the helpful understanding of the in's and out's of my phone!
So basically I can root/unroot without fear because I am able to revert the phone back if I had any problems.
The only risk is unlocking the bootloader via HTC because regardless of what you do, HTC will always know that your phone has been bootloader unlocked.
Basically the only reason we need S-off is to flash radios and also to be able to do that without it showing that our phones have been messed with/unlocked.

You are wrong.
You can have an unlocked bootloader and still be S-On (this is exactly what HTCDev unlock does).
A rooted phone can run root-only apps and allows you to access the root file system.
An unlocked bootloader allows you to install a custom recovery where you can flash ROMs, but may or may not allow flashing of kernels and will usually not allow you to flash radios.
S-Off allows you to flash radios and other protected NAND partitions.
S-Off, to my knowledge as of 6/4/2012, has not yet been obtained on the EVO 4G LTE, though you can root and unlock the bootloader. But you really only need S-Off if you want to flash different radios.
In summary:
S-Off + Root + Unlocked bootloader (with custom recovery) allows you to do anything with the phone.
S-On + Root + Unlocked bootloader (with custom recovery) allows you to do anything EXCEPT flash radios.
S-off also allows you to change the splash screen

Hello everyone. Glad to be on the forum. I recently rooted my EVO LTE using zedomax's soft root method (non-bootloader unlock). I then unwittingly updated to 1.22.651.3 which of course ruined my root. Next I ran RUU because I THOUGHT that this would restore my phone to its factory ROM and remove any remnants of my old root. After RUU ran I then attempted to use zedomax's soft root method again only to find that it would not take on my phone. I am not particularly interested in unlocking my bootloader. The main reasons I root is for Tether and Roam Control. I see in the forum where the 1.22.651.1 soft root method will not work for 1.22.651.3. Is this true ? and if so are there any other quick soft root methods I can use to regain SU permissions for the few apps that I would like to use ? Thank you for the help. I am new to this and still learning. I just want to make sure that I have not messed something up and that I have done all that I can. Any advice would be very appreciated.

If you unlock you can, otherwise i think you're waiting......... This is from that thread......
I'm working on updating this for the OTA. Currently involved in another project, but I will get back to this asap.
For now, the manual way is > Unlock via HTC Dev, flash TWRP recovery, flash SuperSU.zip from the SuperSU thread on xda.
As I said to the guy above you, since your bootloader is unlocked, just flash TWRP recovery from fastboot, then flash the SuperSU.zip from the SuperSU thread here on xda.

Many have made this same mistake. However, the answer is very straight forward. Sign up at HTC Dev for an account, and unlock your bootloader. After you are S-OFF, you can then download xHaus's deodexed ROM which includes the latest OTA. Use goo.manager from the Google Play Store to install TWRP recovery, put the aforementioned ROM zip file in the root of your sdcard, reboot into TWRP recovery, and flash the ROM.
After this procedure, you will be r00t and S-OFF, as good as it gets.
Have fun, and PM me with any questions about this procedure.

Okay. Thank you all very much. I will prolly be sending PM's for this procedure. I understand that there are CMD prompts and code entry that have to be done. While the process seems very straight forward, I just want to be sure. If it is not to much trouble, could someone please tell me if RUU does in fact return the phone to its factory state or does it simply remove the "Tampered" in the bootloader screen ? I guess what I mean is how extensive is the effect of RUU ?
Once again thank you all. I have never seen a forum respond so quickly to a post and without mocking remarks.

Just to clarify, you cannot S-OFF using HTCDev. The device will be UNLOCKED, and S-ON, however a custom recovery can of course be flashed, and then SuperSU, or a custom ROM, for root.
S-OFF is not currently possible for those that took the OTA update while they were still S-ON.
I know there's not an S-Off yet for 1.22.651.3, but how about just a temporary root exploit.
It doesn't need to survive a reboot - I just want to be able to run Titanium Backup once.
I spend longer customizing home-screens and settings than anybody I know. MyBackupPro just doesn't cut it. I'm still putting things back for days.
Unfortunately the HTCDev unlock wipes everything.
I guess if I do go that route, I'd just have to do one last re-create of my layout and settings, but I just thought I'd ask.
Search for xHausx's deodexed ROM for the LTEVO build that includes the latest OTA and fixes. You can do this via TWRP (my personal favorite) or Clockwork Mod. Check out the ROM Manager app via Google Play. After flashing the ROM via TWRP, you will have r00t, and Titanium Backup is yours.

Maybe I've missed something here...
To flash this (or anything), I have to use the HTCDev unlock first, which wipes my data, right?
Once I do that, I can flash or install anything I like, including Titanium Backup, regardless of having it already bundled in some ROM for me.
The point was to back up what I've got now using Titanium, before running the HTCDev unlock, like if there was a temp root exploit.
I know what you're saying; we had a temp root on the Evo 3D before it was fully rooted and unlocked. I don't remember seeing one for this phone anywhere though.
this guy is asking about root...not a rom??
HTC dev is currently the only root method if you took the ota.
We had a one click root that wouldn't unlock bootloder but that was patched.

I am also interested in this. I have the newest version 651.3 and no root. I want Titanium Backup to run first before a wipe of data.
Also, i am not completely understanding something here. I read root and S-Off. I have read that S-off gives greater level of rights in the system, but do we need that to apply new ROMs? Not sure what the S-Off give us exactly. Can someone clear that up for me? Thanks, Chewboxa.

If you can get S-OFF, you absolutely want it when it becomes available. HTC dev is getting more and more restrictive
So am I reading this correctly.. Even with the new ota if you use HTC Dev to root you can flash roms? I thought the ota prevented that? I knew pre ota you didn't need soff to flash roms but I thought with the ota that was gone...if not I guess I better get going and so this.. Could someone point me to the best path for this knowing I am stock with ota update. No root.. What is the story with google wallet.. Do I need to test before doing this.. Yes, if you've used the HTC Dev unlock, you can certainly then flash a recovery or any ROM you like.
The catch is just that if you haven't yet used the unlock, it will wipe all your data when you do.
I was hoping for an exploit to let us run TB first - but from the looks of it, none of the previous exploits work anymore if you already have the OTA.
Does, the Dev unlock, void your warranty?
Yes, given your comment, a nandroid and perhaps using the App Backup and Restore app from the market is as good as you can get currently. It isn't Titanium, but it is a decent "Plan B."

I can't do a nandroid because I still have the stock recovery.
Volume up or down while powering up still just boots the phone, not into recovery.
Or is there some other way?
Nope. The only way to root with the newest hboot is Htc dev. You will lose data. There's no way around it.

Ok, i'll be short for english is not my first language - the less i write the less you'll get confused.
I hope this helps someone. I was on the latest OTA from Sprint with HBOOT 2.49 - and i found literally nothing to help me having S-OFF, until i did this on my own.
First thing - first! I'm not responsible if you brick your phone - i just share my experience and if somebody find it's useful, then use it.
Things you will need:
1. Download everything you need - Some ADB tool, custom recovery (my phone didn't like CWM so i used TWRP 2.7.1.1), Custom ROM that is already rooted and can be installed while S-ON. Open a new tab in your browser with Firewater's page so you can follow the instructions later.
2. Unlock your bootloader with HTCDEV.
3. Install custom recovery and make a backup.
4. Install custom rom (ViperMax did the job for me, it's not a rom preference, it's a workhorse of choice). Now you have root.
5. Boot the phone and set it up for WiFi, check USB Debugging, uncheck fast boot in power menu, allow mock locations, uncheck apps verifying via USB.
6. Follow instructions on Firewater's page.
7. You are now S-OFF!!! (my phone needed 3 bottles for s-off, so be patient).
If you have any questions i will be happy to reply! Good luck!
Is it possible to do this without getting SuperCID?
Sent from my HTC0P3P7 using XDA Free mobile app
I think it is possible. As far as i know superCID is needed when you flash ROM's etc. from different carriers to avoid CID mismatch and get in bootloop or worse. With Sprint and Verizon it is a bit complicated - the ROM must support Sprint or Verizon respectively. I did the superCID just to be extra sure.
