Replacing TouchWiz apps with stock ICS apps? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I can't be the only one who thinks the TouchWiz apps suck (particularly the SMS app). Is there a way to replace them with the stock ICS ones?
I'd rather keep TouchWiz for now until other ROMs become more stable, so flashing another ROM with the stock apps wouldn't be ideal. Could I simply root and replace the TouchWiz .apk from the system app folder and replace with the ICS .apk and re-boot?
Could I also use this method to remove all the included bloat (chatON etc)?
Finally, if I root my S3 is there a way to un-root it in order to get it repaired under warranty?
Thanks for any help.

Yes, I hate the stock messaging app, which is why after I rooted, I installed GO SMS Pro and then froze the stock messaging with Titanium Backup (don't uninstall it, just freeze it).
I'm sure there's a way to replace them with stock ICS ones, it's just a case of finding out how :3.
If you install Omega v5.0 the Aroma Installer Script actually asks you what bloatware you want on your phone and again if you have Titanium Backup you can also remove any junk left over (like Game Hub).
And yes, you can un-root or leave root and try your luck with Triangle-Away from CF.
EDIT: If you want to manually remove junkware, be sure to have a nandroid backup just incase you remove something you shouldn't.

Thanks for that. So once I root all I have to do to un-root is run Triangle-Away?

I love the stock ICS apps, SMS, dialer (and contacts).. basically CM9 which is 95% stock ICS. I would love to enable all these features on my S3.. any idea how? I'm reluctant to flash a custom ROM, as everything is working
Just those few things I would like to revert to stock ICS.. must be a way??!

There is an app in the market called ics messaging that looks like stock. It has ads tho

I'd be more comfortable placing a stock phone.apk, contacts.apk etc etc over top of my current ones than installing random apps
Wonder if the CM9 ones can be copied in place?

If you install the Omega play store app, there's a simple and fairly automated option to replace the samsung sms app with the stock one.

I've installed the Omega app, how do I this if I have a stock rom? Rooted

Pretty much the whole point of XDA is about custom ROM's what makes you think that just because everything is working now on stock that it won't be on a custom ROM, custom ROM's are undoubtedly far better than stock for the most part but it's your phone so entirely up to you just some friendly advice

[Q] Do I NEED a custom ROM?

If I root, do I need a custom ROM to flash? Or will the phone run as it does with Touchwiz and all and I'll just have super user permissions? I'd love to delete all the bloatware installed on it. Ultimately I'd like to get rid of Touchwiz altogether, but I'm not sure if that can be done unless I flash a new ROM.
You DO NOT need a custom rom. After you root you can keep it just as it is and use something like Root Explorer to delete all the bloat. You will just have a stock phone with root access thats it. Now if you want to remove touchwiz that will take some further customization. Alternatively, you can just use a home replacement like ADW or Launcher Pro.
I bet your next post will be how u rooted and deleted a bunch of crap now ur phone is in bootloop. maybe u should read and see what rooting means, don't bite more than you can chew

That seems a little pessimistic.
nandroid backup in case you delete something you shouldnt have... if the pessimism become realism... you can restore and start again..
You can root and stay stock.
You can remove the bloatware (see my sticky post in the General section).
You could just use a home alternative like Launcher Pro and never see TW again. There are ROMs that have it removed, see Eugene in Development.
First thing I would personally do right after you root your phone.
Install Rom Manager and do a Rom Backup before you delete anything or change anything. That way no matter what happens you can go back to Stock no matter what you do.

[Q] How to deodex a stock froyo?

I was wondering if you can deodex a stock froyo rom, or at least how to get a deodexed rom on the phone without losing all the data on it.
I have been using the phone for about half a year and I don't want to lose all the info on it (SMS, emails - lotus, apps, settings etc.)
Thanks in advance
hey first root your mobile then nothing is impossible in the world!
as you said you one year, your warranty was void
so nothing harm your mobile
rooted, tweaked, some stock apps removed, installed franco kernel, but I am still using the stock rom because I do't want to lose the apps I have installed and all the data, as I have mentioned.
I guess a good backup program (for data, apps, sms) would also do the same thing, in the end, but I don't know of a free one.
The google market already restores most of the apps you installed, but titaniun backup does an very good job

[Q] Stock to UnNamed

Ok, so I have been waiting for ICS patiently since I got my phone and didn't want to jump to any other rom but I am going to have 2 weeks off work and I know I will want to try and flash something out of boredom.
Few questions...
Switching from Stock Rooted to Unnamed
1. If I want to keep all my saved game/app info I just need to do Titanium Backup of user apps correct?
2. Will I have a problem playing MKV, AVI on the stock player, and will TW widgets like Picture Gallery work?
3. And if I do not like UnNamed (doubt I wont like it) do I just need to do a CWM recover to go back to exactly where I was then restore my apps/games from Titanium?
My main concern is loosing anything, thanks in advance for the help and I will make sure to hit that thanks button.

If you backup with Tibu before installing the rom, just be sure to only restore missing apps with data. Don't install any system apps or system data. I think you need pro version for that feature.

UnNamed is based on stock. You should be able to run anything that you can run on stock. You'll still have tw unless you change it. The widgets will work.

If you first install a CWM enabled kernel, you can make a nandroid backup before you flash the rom, and then return to stock plus CWM enabled kernel from the nandroid backup. After that, you could even flash the stock kernel back if you wanted. In this case, your current configuration would be retained.
Made the switch earlier than I thought.
Thanks for the answers, when I get home ill play with it some more.
One additional factor about unnamed is because its based on Stock you can still use Samsung Kies for backup/restore...Now I have moved on to ICS'd ROM from Task and you cannot use the USB kies.
This becomes even more enticing now that gtg has posted the 2.0.0 Unnamed update and it includes much of the animation that is in ICS. Now I think there is even a 2.0.0a that included the latest Entropy daily.

Yea I wish I waited one more day before flashing, but I will use 1.3.2 for a few days.
Should I update to Entropy or Siyah latest kernal or I should leave it at what 1.3.2 came with?
At least I realized how easy it is to actually flash and retain all my stuff.
Missed call logs but I got the app just now, kinda really needed that and rejected list.
I had the same question. Easy answer is that you can flash UnNamed 2.0.0 right over the 1.3.2. using the zip on your SD and CWM. That way you can just continue and don't have to reset/install anything. Worked like a charm. Don't know about call logs. Didn't matter to me. Finally, you can easily flash updated kernels like the Entropy ones.
I think he recommended to format 1.3.2 to install 2.0, but I flashed over and it was fine.
gtg started out recommending factory update and wipe but it's playing out that you can just install, what is is now, 2.1.1 right over 1.3.2 and there have been no issues on that account. gtg is putting an incredible amount of work into this.

[Q] how to remove original apps & get current ROM

hello, I am totally useless noobs.

here's my question :
1. is it possible to remove an original apps (some developer apps / something that cannot be removed even I reset it to factory setting) without rooting my phone??
because I've read somehing in this forum about "ROM kitchen", so I can modify the stock ROM. because so many apps that I want to uninstall it.
2. how to get my current ROM in my phone??
I've search it for 4 days and no one have it. Sometimes I want to go back with the same firmware like I used now.

The stock rom, or the rom, or the firmware, is just the /system folder in your device.
In that folder you have to delete (or rename) in the folder /system/app/yourname.app and the corresponding .odex file to delete it from rom.
You can also use CWM.zip + Aroma Manager and load them sequentially from Recovery, choose in Aroma Manager to mount all partitions and do the above.
[Guide] Types of Android backups
There's also the possibility to modify yourself the rom, but, is much more difficult. If you are using Vodafone o other operator custom rom probably there is the unlocked one and is official (stock) as well.

Whoops....

I did a factory reset on my phone yesterday and decided to really clear out a bunch of stuff with titanium that I never use, including widgets. I deleted the stock clock app thinking it was a widget. Does anyone know where I can find that? I'm open to a different app but I'm quite happy with the stock JB clock app.
Thanks!
Did you try doing a reset again?
tell your version and Rom so someone can upload it for you
i717, 4.1.2, stock and rooted
I haven't tried that because some of the bloat I deleted previously (Yahoo, some other stuff) was gone this reset.
also there are 2 other ways to get it back
flash stock Rom and you will lose root
flash custom Rom
also next time i suggest doing a backup via CWM

Factory reset won't replace any deleted files. All it does is delete user data and downloaded apps, and makes all settings to default.
Flashing the same rom on top of your rom will replace missing files and put back all the apps you deleted.
I suggest you use Titanium to freeze any unwanted things, then run a few days like that, then eventually delete the frozen apps.
I am on Telus and when I want to revert back to stock with all the bloat (well not quite all the bloat) I simply flash the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268617
[ROM][Modems] Custom Canadian Jelly Bean - Rooted & Deodexed. A similar thread exists for ATT. Then I restore additional apps via titanium backup or my apps in play store.

here is stock clock.apk and odex file. https://www.dropbox.com/s/8psbgzybq5y3ze0/ClockPackage.apk ___ https://www.dropbox.com/s/0c0u7eoyyph22c3/ClockPackage.odex. download and move to system/app and make sure permisions are set properly then reboot. if you are running a stock deodexed rom you will need to remove clock package from that rom instead.
Thanks guys!
The dropbox clock downloads but doesn't install. Permissions are correct.
did you try installing like normal apk or did you place in system/app? should place in system/app. both clock.apk and odex.apk
Like normal? I'm afraid I don't know how to do the second one.
using a file manager that has root access(i use root exploerer but there are lots) move the apks that you downloaded into system/app folder. then long press the file until you get menu to come up and select set permissions. should be rw-r--r--. change if not. then reboot.
