[Q] Flashing white screen on boot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, first post
ive had my rooted galaxy s2 with the latest siyah kernel 3.3.2, i had cwm recover 5 and rom manager
i tried to flash cyanogen mod through rom manager, following the steps it gave me, i downloaded the files through rom manager and went through all the prompts till i clicked agee to go into recovery mode.
once it did that the phone shut off but would not turn on again so i went to turn on manually, it loads the samsung galaxy screen with the yellow triangle but goes straight into a white flashing screen.
Ive tried taking the battery out, leaving it and putting it back in again, still a flashing screen,

check what i9100 you have and download correct cm9.
using cwm format data system cacha sdcard dalvik
flash cm9 using cwm
rommanager doesnt work on GS2

i have the international 19100T
ahh rats i should have known rom manager does not work, , im just stuck in a white flash screen on boot up, cant get to cwm, although i can get into odin
would reflashing my kernel on odin get me through? everything is back up onto my sd card.

Try flashing a kernel first, and if that doesn't work, flash a rom in Odin, re-root your phone & restore your backup. But yeah, don't use Rom Manager with a kernel that has CWRecovery. One or the other. Rom Manager has a habit of doing stuff like what's happened to you on SGS2's which also have CWRecovery installed.

awesome, I tried flashing the latest siyah kernel, the one that i already had on my phone before the problems, that didn't do anything to get me through, any suggestions on which kernel/rom to flash?

because you are on siyah and im not comfortable with that, please flash a stock kernel or cfroot kernel and format system data partitions after that.
now flash any official stock ICS or GB rom using Odin.

ohh sweet baby jesus im i flashed a cf kernel and now im into cwm on 4.0.1.5, can i just normal reboot my phone now?

No need to format anything. Given you want to use CM9, I'd recommend you flash CM9 Resurrection Edition in Odin, put the latest CM9 nightly & Gapps on your internal/external SD card then flash that nightly & Gapps in CWM (read the first page of the CM9 discussion thread thoroughly & follow the instructions to the letter. From there you can stick with the CM9 stock kernel or flash whatever other kernel you want to use (provided it's CM9 compatible).
From then on, if you want to flash CM9 nightlies, do it via CWM/CWRecovery, just don't use Rom Manager this time I use CM9 as well & I have it frozen because I use Siyah (which has CWM).

alrighty! thanks for the info, is cf kernel compatible with cm9? i want to just have one kernel that'll handle most roms, any suggestions?
ive reloaded my old stable phone version, the version i saved before trying to flash cyanogen mod with rom manager, this version has siyah and stock rom, back to square one *phew*

i still say wipe first, cm9 will come with its own latest cwm that can be used to flash any custom roms after.
flashing via odin version is easy and fool proof as it has everything bundled for correct working of cm9.

If you flash CM9 the CM9 kernel will overwrite/replace your CFRoot kernel, which is fine. As I said in my previous post you can stick with that if you're happy with it, or you can flash any other kernel that's CM9 compatible.
No suggestions/recommendations. Because your experience will not be the same as someone else's using a given rom or kernel. If you want to go down that path, try some kernels to find one you like. To see if a kernel is compatible with CM9, read the the dev thread devoted to the kernel in question.
OK. Given you're back @ square one, Atifsh is right when he says flashing the Resurrection version (Odin version) then flashing Gapps/nightly from there is probably a good way to go for you. Once you've done that, you'll be able to flash CM9 nightlies via CWRecovery. As said previously, read that first page of the CM9 discussion thread/instructions thoroughly before you do anything.

Something similar happened to me too. I flashed stock XWLPG, then siyah 3.3.2 and did a factory reset. After that, got stuck in a flashing white screen after the yellow triangle.
What I did: boot on download mode, flash XWLPG over PC Odin once more, did a full wipe BEFORE flashing siyah and then siyah. Everything went ok this time, but eventually I found out that every time I do a factory reset after siyah that problem would occur.

[Q] [QUE]: Unable to install Clockworkmod and CM7

Hi All,
Eventough I bought my SGS2 about a year ago, I decided to root it recently. I read various threads on this forum, and then decided to root my phone using CF_Root. Since my Kernel was XXKL1, I downloaded the appropriate file and used odin to flash PDA. Everything worked and I was able to successfully root my phone and install root apps like Titanium Backup Pro.
Now, I wanted to install CM7 on my phone, as it is know to be very stable and doesn't have random reboots. However, after I flashed the .zip file using manual Clockworkmod recovery , the phone refused to boot and went into a bootloop. Upon research, I found that CF-Root Kernal will only be able to install the firmwars which are in Samsung format (factoryfs.img, zImage etc) and the CM7 is not in that format.
I now decided to flash a kernel with standard ClockworkMod and downloaded it from Koush's site. After flashing this (Odin, PDA), the phone got stuck in Bootscreen, with the yellow triangle.
So, as of now, I can only use CF-Root Kernel (stock Kernel works too). Is there any way I can install stock CWM on my phone and be able to install CM7?
PS: I also tried flashing back stock rom, install clockworkmod using the wiki at CM7 SGS2 page. The Phone again went into a bootloop. So basically I am not able to install any kernel which has clockworkmod built into it

Thanks JJEgan for the reply...
Well, I guess my original post was long, but unclear.
1. My phone is working perfectly.
2. I am able to root using Chainfire's method.
3. I am able to remove the yellow triangle by flashing the stock kernel via odin and then reflashing chainfire's zImage via CWM
4. When I install CM7 via clockwork recovery, the phone bootloops. Even flashing the CF-Root kernel doesn't help. Only option is to restore from backup.
5. When I try to install any kernel with Koush's clockworkmod recovery, the phone restartes after flashing and gets stuck at the yellow triangle screen.
6. I am able to flash odia's insecure kernel without any issues.
I am looking for solutions for points 4 & 5, so that I can install CM7.

Hi mate, I've never tried cm7 nor cf-root kernel on my galaxy s2 but once i got into boot loop so i searched in xda forum and i found the answer.now I drive stock rom + siyah kernel which also provide CWM 5 for you.
I think befor doing anything first flash your drive with stock kernel which also removes yellow triangle then do you should be out of boot loops. if didn't work flash the whole stock kernel then go on with flashing cm7.
I guess then you could flash siyah kernel next flash cm7 using CWM. The benefit if using siyah kernel is that it's compatible with either stock or cm7 firmware.

@JJEgan: I made sure I read all the posts in the CM7 thread before putting up a thread myself. No clues there. My problem is that I am unable to get the custom recovery working via clockworkmod recovery... and then flash CM7
I also tried doing it the CM7 way, as described in their wiki but faced the same problem..
@mekhonte: Thanks for the suggestion on siyah kernel. I will try that. What about battery life on it?
I know how to come out of the bootloop, and have successfully done that. But, I am still unable to go into CM7.
I had cm7 installed via cf-root. Maybe you didn't wipe data, cache and dalvik csche?

I tried siyah kernel on cm7 and it didn't work, probably because it us not for cm7. Just flash KL1 then related cfroot, then download an install cm7:
1. In cwm clean data, cache and dalvik cache
2. Install cm7 zip TWICE (that is important)
3. Install gaps
4. Clean caches and data one more time
5. Reboot
And don't mess with the kernel. Cm7 comes with its own kernel which is optimised.

this is the link of the siyah kernel thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
the developer claims the the kernel is as stable as stock kernel which i believe as long as you do not mess around with CPU frequencies and governors or under volting, it is. i think it has improved my battery life some how, auto brightness script has been modified and also you can down-clock your CPU. I think it's worthy to give it a shot.

Q: Does this kernel support CM7 or any other AOSP based roms?
A: Yes, but it only support cm7 or miui based roms for now. If you are using another aosp based Rom tell me and I will support it.

Ok here we go followed my instructions then flashed stock rom and rooted cwm .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
This is meant to clear all user multiple errors and start from a clean phone .
Then to CM7 instructions .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297557
First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions are available here.
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
have to flash the rom twice in a row to get it booting...is plastered all over the CM7 thread so i did .
Going by your post in CM7 thread you do not have CWM custom recovery installed
CWM and root same as my fix post .

[Q] Need help with rooting [official ICS 4.0.3][UCLE5]

Hello guys, So I'm fairly new to rooting (first android/smartphone/ but good experience with PCs) and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm using the ICS 4.0.3 build from kies, with the UCLE5, and build number IML74k.CLE5.
*from reading the stickies I've learned to NOT use ROM manager, galaxys2root.com, and to not use the STOCK ICS method as it has a brickbug ( the ones on forum)
Last night I tried rooting my phone by using Doomlord's guide but it didn't work ( I had unknown sources, and USB debugging on*but my phone was on and not on download mode or anything* )
Then I tried SuperOneClick root and it was just stuck on one of the steps, and the only way to stop it was to end task the program and ADP...any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Sorry for being a nub lol
*please move to Q and Q accidently posted in general section
Just use Odin to flash any ics kernel u want.
so I guess Ill try to flash using step 3. on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 using ODIN3, then install a kernel ( i want to use 3.3d Siyah ) and then flash a custom ROM (like semi_v17) *the guide from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948 correct?
I also want to add that after i Root using 2c.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows) that method, I boot into 3E recovery and perform data/factory wipe, wipe cache, dalvik and reset extweaks profiles...then install semi_v17 ROM while in recovery mode and done? Just making sure before I do anything with my phone
I know that relying on the sticky posts leaves some confusion because of Gingerbread and ICS versions. The Entropy512 stock plus root is a Gingerbread firmware with stock kernel and root. If you go that route, you then need to install a Gingerbread custom kernel, and then you can flash Semi from ClockworkMod Recovery if that is what you want.
In my opinion, since you are already on UCLE5 stock, the best route would be to flash the UCLE5 stock plus root package that you can download from the development section, and then install a custom ICS kernel. I know you were trying to avoid the Emmc Superbrick Bug, but since you have stock UCLE5 with the stock kernel on the phone now, you already (supposedly) have the Emmc Superbrick Bug present in the stock kernel. All the instructions needed to install a custom kernel are contained in the OP of the UCLE5 stock plus root thread.
If you have additional questions, just ask.

So I flash the build from this [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root..(no need to flash according to thread)
pick one of the the three kernels (prob going with AJ siyad) and install using Odin lite..then ROM? (like Semi v17?) it gets confusing at some parts cause on the Stock ICS + root section is says to wipe before flashing if coming from another base (im guessing since im on the UCLE5 base i dont need too)

If you want to go from stock ICS to stock JB you have no need to root.
All you do is simply reboot into download mode (Power on using Volume Up + Home + Power) then flash the JB md5 file via ODIN.
Once you have flashed the file you may find system wont boot into rom (this is normal). Just reboot into download mode and flash latest version of Siyah kernel (.tar file) which will be Siyah v6 beta4 (or above). This will give you cwm recovery, better battery life, root access, SU etc.
Go and have a look at some topics/search etc, All the info you need is already on here and if you try and take some shortcuts you may run into problems or even possibly brick your device so take some time and learn.
PS. Yes the eMMc brick bug is part of stock 4.0.4 kernel so just dont go into stock recovery. You can also brick device by your flash process getting interrupted so make sure you have drivers installed correctly (install kies) and taht you're not running any other programs while flashing and also that you have at least 55% battery.
It's a very good thing you are reading before getting the bad boy you intend to flash.
See the thing about this bug is when you make a back up, wipe things up from the recovery, and flash via oding. Once you do the wipes, you are kinda screwed.
Now, you got a couple of choices here:
1) Your device arrives with 4.0.4 ICS, flash siyah kernel (I'll get you off the hook).
2) Arrives with 4.0.3, you are good to go, no danger.
3) You can try mobile odin, it flashes with its own kernel and, apart from being fast, it's easy.
4) If you get a gingerbread version, you good as well.
That being said, I'd advice you to play with it for a couple of days instead of flashing right away.
Check out some videos, read something about ExynosAbuse (It'll get you rooted with one click) and revolv around the q&a section looking for "not to do list".
good luck and remember, keep on reading.

Thanks a lot for all your help
the ressurection remix rom i downloaded came as zip file.I can flash it from cwm itself right?
and regarding the kernel im a bit confused between siyah and dorimanx .I know it depends on phone but what would u suggest?ur personal choice
and i need one more help.I need a vanilla jb rom.Not too much bloatware and with less bugs as possible and tweaked for performance and battery. The problem is net speed is very very low...trust me..i cannot try most of them unless i wait for weeks. So if anyone can suggest i can download that alone and do

Ok before we start, I have looked and tried everything I can find so I will post what I have done after I post my issue. (I know I'm new but I've been using this site a lot lately I just never signed up)

I use CWM recovery. Every single time I've tried to flashboot a custome rom, from Res Remix to straight up cm10 to other jelly bean mods, all the "top" mods suggested in articles, though it says successful, It always, always gets stuck on the Galaxy s2 screen with the yellow triangle. It does not go black, it just stays on that screen, I've left it for as long as 2 hours and it does not do anything and does not let me back into recovery mode. (download mode yes)
I have, multiple times, re-installed stock rom, re-rooted etc...
cleared cache and davik cache, factory reset and format system (prior to flashing the custome roms and sometimes right after as some suggest)
I even tried a complete wipe of the sd card, system, then reflashed stock rom. It always works to return to stock rom and to root it, but nothing else. It seems every solution I find on this site, and many others are point to the above things I have tried all with a slight variety. I have tried many different custom roms,
I'm lost what to do next? I can't find any other information, my binary count is up to 18 now and none of it has worked.
Which kernel are you using?

I'm sorry, I thought I mentioned all the info I had.
My current kernel version for ICS is 3.0.15-I9100XXLPB
The kernels I have tried when booting res remix are both Dormanx(sp?) and CM10.1, also tried cm10.1 with another rom.
Sorry I added info, not sure which one you wanted

ohh, yes the Siyah kernel, I failed to mention that i tried rooting using the siyah kernel early on and it would get stuck on the boot screen and even ICS wouldn't work. now on the other hand, this was one of my early attempts and i've tried everything else twice so I will try this option again and get back thanks
I have now tried to boot kernel Siyah 5.0.1 twice and it gets stuck on the kernel boot screen after the samsung s2 screen (the one with the yellow triangle) The screen is a ying-yang symbol with pink/purple lighting. I have left it on for 10 minutes and it stays on that screen. I have removed the battery and put it back in and now it doesn't even get past the s2 bootup screen, I left it for a couple minutes, still nothing. Reboot the phone again and now it's in Kernel Panic Upload Mode... Going back to stock rom. I'll try to find a 4.1.5 siyah kernel and try that one and see if it does anything different.

Edit: Tried dorimanx 8.3, flashed through cwm recovery this time, still does the same thing

And don't forget to go in recovery mode and wipe out the dalvik memory under advanced. After wiping dalvik/clearing user data and formatting your phone, reinstall the rom of your choice (that's compatible with the phone)
you can also install siyah 6 and flash kitkat directly from recovery.
Then it would use kitkats kernel and bootup the rom
thank you guys for your replys. i will try what you suggested and get back to you

Unable to install any softwre outside of Odin. Please Help.

[Solved]
I am unable to flash any roms through cwm, and can only do it through odin. Flashing through cwm results in the phone not loading past the boot logo.
I formatted sd card in cwm, thinking it would only restore to factory settings, not knowing it would completely wipe everything.
From then i was unable to even see the boot logo or recovery mode, but luckily download mode still worked.
So i flashed the stock rom through odin, but it still plays up. Now the battery doesn't last more than 1 day, and constantly freezes.
Now whenever i install anything in cwm, as soon as i reboot, it goes to the bootscreen and freezes. I have tried at least 5 different roms and the same story each time, So each time i have to reflash stock rom with odin.
So any ideas to why this is? any help is appreciated. I have tried ultimate kernel wipe cleaner , or whatever it is called as well.
[Solved]
I just reflashed stock ICS in odin, and ticked the 're-partition' box. the repartition file is called " u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit ". Now it works good as new and I'm currently running PACman rom on 4.3. gg guys.
Just to check, but you have factory reset after flashing the new ROM from CWM right?
Try these steps :
1. Flash ROMNuke script by hawkerpaul. (it's a ROM nuke, not just a kernel nuke)
2. Flash ROM in CWM.
3. Boot.
I know it sounds simple, but that's got me out of a few odd bootloop /failed flash situations. Give it a go.
Then, if that doesn't work, re-download the ROM which you're attempting to flash & try again.
One more thing, what kernel are you trying to flash the ROM from in CWM? Try a different one, say siyah. I've sometimes seen where a particular kernel won't flash but another will for no apparent reason.

it was stock ics cwm i think?, also another thing when I install a new rom, when it shows the progress bar, it goes up to 3 quarters then it skips the rest and says update completed (I just tried Romnuke and same story). I have also tried siyah kernel and it just freezes at the siyah kernel instead. Im currently stuck on stock ICS 4.0.2
Not sure what you mean by 'stock ICS CWM'?
And just to make sure, you definitely have an i9100 right? Not a variant, i9100g etc? Just asking as 4.0.2 was never released for i9100, only 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 (stay away from that one)
So now, re-download the ROM which you're attempting to flash, and try again after the ROMNuke script. Does the script run successfully? Or does it have errors /messages which indicate it didn't run successfully?

All good. And also good that you have an i9100.
Ok, so have you tried the things I said?
1. Try flashing from a different kernel (your choice, try one other than Siyah)
2. Re-download the ROM & reflash with Nuke script then ROM.

5 months later I found the answer when messing with odin. What you do is tick the 're-partition' box, and then in the 'pit' sections you need the partition file i guess, for the i9100 its called u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit . hope this helps anyone else who may have this problem
