So I am a somewhat new tech savvy root happy android user. I was so impatient to wait for ICS, that I flashed my phone yesterday. I tried to post in the thread for the new release, but being a new user, I was unable.
Anyway, is there any possible way to get root on this latest build? Con and some others were working on some stuff, according to what they posted in the thread, but it has been dead for a few days. I would like to S-Off, but apparently I can't go back to 3.14.605.05 to do it. Has anyone had any success achieving root on this new build? I did unlock hboot with htcdev again after flashing, but that is as far as I can go. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Flash recovery, install a rooted rom like mine or cleanrom for example, then do S-OFF. Hboot hasn't changed so they haven't patched S-OFF
Ok
I thought the roms were slaves to firmware in which they were created, i.e. a 605.05 rom could not run on the 605.10 If so, I didn't see your 605.10 rom, could you direct me? I already have Amon Ra installed, so I am good there. Also, his original post with the S-Off toolkit said to only use on 605.05, and didn't know if it would work on 605.10, even if I could achieve root. Thanks in advance for all your help, I've found your replies to other users to be most helpful in untangling the web of android modding in my mind.
Also, one more questions. I made a nandroid backup before I upgraded to ICS. Is that backup essentially useless unless I get S-Off and go back to the firmware that I created that backup on?
Edit:
"This is a stock, rooted, debloated version of the new 3.14.605.10 leak. This is the only 3.14.605.10 based ROM with APM, Tweaks, Aroma Installer, and Aroma based Sense and De-Sense! It was also the first to have working root."
Sorry, was so busy reading everything else in the thread, I completely missed that. So I guess I need to install your Rom first, and still use the PH98IMG.zip because I am not S-Off? After that, I should have root and will be able to S-Off?

thanks for the reply guys... I rooted, and installed a ROM. I dig the ROM, but wanted to go back to stock ROM to do some tweaks (or attempt at least, lol) myself and see how I do.
If I am not mistaken a RUU will remove root, right? Just wondering if there is a

Did you make a backup after you gained root but before you installed the rom? If so just nand back to that and you will have stock root. If not I would suggest remove root and redoing it so you can make a backup, then go from there.

Isn't the RUU in that thread a downgrade? I understand that must be flashed to gain root?, my question is after root can I flash back to the latest RUU and keep root??
If not what is missing from the RUU in that thread vs. the latest RUU?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000448
it is stock and rooted and deodexed(for easy modding if you want in the future) comes in bloat free or bloat(and remove what you want)
flash it in clockwork recovery, this is what i use.
Cool...This i am going to try out. :-D Thanks!

It downgrades to get the phone rooted but when you put the final zip for it to update, it updates to the stock release with root. Im running the .06 version and did nothing but root it.
Soooo, I have been living a relatively blissful existence in the rooted world rocking cyanogenmod 7. For a couple of reasons I decided to try the latest "official" gb leak from HTC... And I've lost root...
So, my question is: what/where am I? My s-key is still off... I originally rooted using the revolutionary method, should I redo the root process?
Thanks in advance!

Well, when you flash an RUU (something you really shouldn't do unless you want a bone stock device) you're going to loose root because HTC doesn't root their ROMs.
You should be able to just reflash a new recovery (since the RUU probably wiped it) and superuser and be good. If not, reflash the recovery and try a rooted version of the ROM. And stay away from RUUs... If you'd rooted with ADB you'd be looking at a completely bone stock, S-On device right now.
If you want to try newest leak rooted and running very nicely load my Vigor lookalike or xdabolt in development section both based off 2.11.605.3 mine has a few more tweaks and custom kernel his is more stock if you want that with HTC kernel.

No. S-off is S-off, not root by any stretch of the imagination. Let's not confuse people by mixing terms that aren't interchangeable.

S-off merely allows root permissions to persist beyond reboot. It primarily locks out writing to /data and /system, and without those, root is impossible. The difficulty in rooting a new device is finding a way around the bootloader security to achieve SU access so that exploits can be used to write a new bootloader that won't check for root and will allow writing to /system and /data. Once security is off, gaining SU status is fairly easy. It is entirely possible to have S-off and run a non-rooted ROM. I hope that clears up confusion. If I'm wrong somewhere in this, I hope someone corrects me.
Hi all,
I have rooted and S-OFFed my 16 GB Flyer using Revolutionary and I'm currently on 2.3.4.
I just noticed that there is an OTA Update available for 3.2.
Can i run this without an issue, or do I have to restore the flyer to stock to flash the OTA?
thanks,

every time I read through the threads on returning to stock I just don't understand it fully.
The main thing I am having issue with is understand what the RUU is and how I know what one to use.
I have a UK 16GB Wifi only
as you are s-off and rooted you could upgrade to a custom 3.2 rom. i did it a couple of days ago and im happy with it. I also have a 16gb uk flyer.

I think that is what is tripping me up.
So, all I have to do is download the RUU for the 16GB,
as I'm on GB with Revolutionary S-OFF and CWM i just run the executable?
does the Flyer need to be connected to the PC? does it have to be in a certain mode?
sorry for the questions, I've come from rooting on Galaxy S2 and this seems far more complicated.

glad all worked out ok. you might what to flash the LeeDrOiD Flyer HC V2.1.0 - 2.6.35.14 KERNEL it has some fixes in there too. just drop it on SD card and install .zip in recovery
Note from Globatron on HC OTA updates for S-OFF users.
It is possible, but not the simplest of options to upgrade with S-OFF.

Noob Question
I may be posting this in the wrong thread, but this is the closest match I could find, since I am a new member and unable to post in the development threads.
I would like to start off by thanking all the devs who have worked so hard on development issues with the Flyer, I intend on donating to them as soon as I am able, as I think everyone who has benefitted should. With that said, please forgive me if this has been covered. I have read pretty much all the threads/posts on these issues and used the search function, but I tend to get somewhat confused by the high volume of information provided and wanted some verification before I go down this road.
I have a BB Wi-Fi 16 GB Flyer (HTC_Flyer_P512_NA). I have run Revolutionary to get S-OFF, installed CWM, and rooted, but still on stock GB 2.3.4; I am now at Software Version 2.27.1540.32, HBOOT Version 6.10.1002, Kernel version 2.6.35.10. I would now like to give HC a try, but not lose root. I would like to start off with stock HC and have the ability to try out some of the custom ROMs. I would also like the ability to go back to GB, if desired.
Here is what I have gleaned so far:
1) I should be able to run Globatron’s method from post #1 of this thread ([Guide][Flyer]Honeycomb S-OFF, Easy Install, Recovery and Root. [US Wifi Added]), starting at step 2, for updating to honeycomb and retaining root.
2) After this, I should have the ability to flash custom HC ROMs.
3) From there, I should have the ability to go back to stock HC, keeping S-OFF and root.
4) Using the procedure in post #3 of this thread ([Guide][Flyer]Honeycomb S-OFF, Easy Install, Recovery and Root. [US Wifi Added]) will take me back to GB with S-OFF and CWM.
5) From GB with S-OFF and CWM, I can go completely back to stock GB with S-ON using this procedure: [Guide][Flyer+View] How to return to S-ON after running revolutionary].
If/where I am wrong about any of the above, could someone kindly point out where and how I am wrong? Assuming all of the above is correct, I have a couple of questions:
• Will I lose my data using Globatron’s method in post #1?
• Although Globatron strongly recommends method 1, I would like to use method 2 because it seems more straight-forward for a noob like me. Is this a bad idea?
Yes, I am a noob (BTW, I hate that word, but I do fall into that category), but I don’t exactly hate myself. Please don’t be hating on me either, even though I am sure that some, or all, of these questions have already been answered. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
Well... After an issue with the digitizer in my phone I had to finally have it recently replaced. I had recently loaded the ICS OTA and actually for the most part liked it alot. I have rooted and done some roms with my 3d when it was Hboot 1.4 with Rev S off and root method. But my phone is currently Hboot 1.5 after replacing it. I havent loaded it to the OTA for ICS. But im trying to decide what I want to do. Id like to root and S off if I can and find a Rom/OTA that works great with the best performance and options with reduced bloat. ICS is pretty cool that I used, but seemed like some bugs with it to. Any suggestions of help on getting me there and in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Ive done some searches here and there on the forum. But really after taking time out for a medical issue I havent been in the loop til now. Thanks ahead of time for any help and suggestions you can push my way.

Here's what I would do in your situation:
1. Do HTC unlock and flash 4EXT recovery
2. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of GB stock
3. Root GB stock ROM and do JuopunutBear (wire trick) with GB version to gain S-OFF
4. Flash 2.89 RUU.exe to get solid Sprint ICS base (firmware and software)
5. Flash Jbear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) or engineering (ENG) bootloader
6. Flash 4EXT recovery (via fastboot flash recovery.img)
7. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of ICS stock
8. Flash whatever ROM's you want to try and check them out
If all the ROM's you are interested in are ICS Sense, then the JB Sprint ICS bootloader is fine, but if you want to flash and run GB and AOSP ROM's the ENG bootloader is a better choice, but it won't run the 2.89 stock kernel.
That's one opinion.

The Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 release with Sense 3.6 is the latest official build, but there have been several CM10 based ROM's released using the AOSP 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) base, and some Sense 4.0 and 4.1 ROM's that run on the E3D.
My favorites are still MeanROM ICS 2.6 and SOS M 2.6.1 which use the same base. Here's a post I wrote back in May that enumerates the fixes mikeyxda had done to the VM leak base at that time and most of those fixes and enhancements were transferred to the Sprint ICS 2.89 based version, with some new ones added. SOS M is de-Sensed and offers a lot of customization built-in and via the Aroma installer with a minimal amount of effort. Both ROM's are fully functional and have good reliability, performance and battery life.
I've tested a lot of interesting ROM's with some unique features including Paranoid Devil with a tablet configuration option and Charmander with Sense 4, but they both have some stuff not working, including 3D and WiMax/4G. If you don't need those features you might also want to try some of the AOSP ROM's (CM9, CM10 and MIUI) since they are very light and clean, and a lot of the current development activity seems to be with those ROM's. If you want a full ICS Sense 3.6 based ROM with a lot of mods integrated, Cool ICS is worth a look too.
ramjet73
Thanks Ramjet. Im gonna check out the MeanRom ICS, SOS and Cool ICS. In past ive liked a sense based rom but Im open to other stuff. My main thing is wanting as few as issues or non working things as possible. Even the OTA of ICS has to muc issues. But the in general feel and look was good.
Thanks for the input and direction. I may hit you up on some advice if thats cool? Thanks again.

This post by mpgrimm2 (part of his overall guide) covers flashing a custom recovery (like 4EXT) and superuser from the PC command prompt via fastboot. Those are the two steps required for rooting, after you have HTC unlocked.
Once you've done that you can move on to gaining S-OFF with either the JuopunutBear (wire trick) or Hboot downgrade method, which is setting the security off for the NAND memory of your phone, and allows you to flash more stuff and not have to use the fastboot command to do it.
It's probably time to move on to the Q&A forum since this has changed from an advice thread into a help thread.

I'm just learning that there is a new OTA. Whatever the case, I have not received it yet but am curious as to how I should handle it. This phone still confuses me a bit when it comes to unlocking etc.
Currently I am S-On, Rooted and running Shrike's PAC-Man rom. I kinda been lazy about staying up to date with everything and just got in my routine of flashing new releases.
Now i'm reading about this update and new hboot versions and wondering what I should be doing now. Should I accept the update in my current status or should I be doing something else to update? What about my hboot version, i'm still at 2.25. Should I be updating that myself or just take the OTA to handle it. My apologies if this is a redundant question.

First, the updated wont be pushed to you because you aren't on a sense rom, and i think the AOSP has the OTAkill.apk but i would need to look for it.
Second, the update is a good thing. not only does it have a new hboot but it has new radios, firmware and other goodies for the phone.
if you were to do the update, i wouldnt wait for VZW to push it. there is a zip that is in the development forum that you may flash to get the benefits of the update.
if you go down this route it will make the phone 100% stock. You would have to do the dev unlock with token and flash a recovery to get back to root status.
if you were to do this you also need to back up internal sd card just in case.
EDIT: Here are the steps you would take if you wanted to update the phone.

You can be S-OFF and still get the OTA, you just have to be pure stock, or you can flash the files in the thread which Flyhalf posted below.
On my last Rezound, I flashed the updated hboot and radios while already S-OFF, rooted and running Nils' ROM. On my current ROM, I got the OTA downloaded while still pure stock, then unlocked bootloader, flashed Amon Ra, rooted, then got S-OFF. Obviously, if there are any subsequent OTA's, I'll have to wait for a flashable.

Thanks for the link/post. But what does this exactly do to an S-Off Rezound? Will this update/install just the HBOOT/Radios?
I'm on Ineffabilis Deus v1.2 ICS 4.0.3. I believe this might have been from the leaked global ruu.

That was from the Global Leak. But the zip will just update firmware such as hboot and radio and few other stuff
I'm s-off. If I flash the latest RUU (whatever it is), then get the new global OTA update, I will retain my s-off-ness, correct? I'll just have to re-root and flash a recovery?

No zip file of any kind will get you back to s-on. you must use fastboot to write to the secure flag. FYI
