Hi everyone,
First time poster here, but don't worry I haven't bricked my phone while trying to flash it
Unfortunately, I have a XT910 with a damaged display, I was wondering if anyone has had any ideas that I could implement. My first thought was to try and bypass the need for the screen on the phone via the HDMI out, but it seems you need to select the option for output via HDMI on the phone itself.
-Everything seems to work except for the display
-Device connects to computer and is able to transfer files (suppose I could try and put it into recovery, but I'd be doing it blind)
Thought at the moment is to try and load a rom which would force the use of HDMI out when detected or try and mod it myself (I'm not sure if its possible)
If I dont get any useful help within the next week, first dibs gets free* parts
But most apps are based on touch. How are you going to navigate or are you just trying to get files off of it? You could also get a replacement screen.
I'm in the same situation. Touch works still very well but be aware of smithereens...
Edit: Sorry, wrong thread. I need to go to bed!

Im not looking to use it in a regular phone way, was trying to find if there was a possible way to set it up with more computer-like functionality. Because it still works i should be able to download apps onto it using play.google.com and do it via my computer(for superuser, busybox and terminal)
Because the screen is actually glued to the LCD/digitizer it needs to be replaced as a unit. With is mucho expensive ($220ish) i.e not worth my while. I have other phones that I can use, I was just looking for a new project

without being able to use the screen, I think it's going to useless. You have to touch the screen in order to launch and interact with apps since they are all written with a touch screen in mind.

So I broke the sceeen of my Vibrant... the screen is shattered and only shows light from the home button. touch doesnt work at all so blind anything is pretty much out. I want to get the photos and videos off of the devices internal memory... but i have no access. are there any programs out there that can help me out? or does anyone know any tricks I could try?
So the phone fully boots? What ROM are you using? Are you rooted? Is debugging enabled?
it fully boots, stock rom 2.1, rooted, and debugging is not enabled.
Can you use the volume buttons to boot to recovery? Might be able to pull some files with adb if you can get there.
Are you using stock recovery as well?
no its cwm recovery...
1.) Power off.
2.) Hold both volume buttons. Push and hold power button (to power on phone). When Vibrant screen appears (guess lol), release power button (but keep holding volume buttons)
3.) It should eventually get to CWM recovery. From there you can pull files to pc with adb
should be simple enough to blind.. the screen doesnt turn on at all soo.. yeah. but i'll give it a try -- thanks.
Should be about 1.5 seconds or so before releasing power button. (That's on mine anyway)
ok how would i do this in adb?
Sorry about the delay.
If you have access to adb from CWM recovery, all you need to do is "adb pull /sdcard"
This will pull all files on your internal (and probably external as well) storage to your current directory.
If you're specifically wanting stuff from your camera, you can run "adb pull /sdcard/DCIM"
Hope this helps.
got it! thank you very much!!
Cool. What did you end up doing?
So, I have this same problem, but have zero experience with andriod. I have been a windows mobile guy in the past, now on the iphone. Now I am sitting here with my brother's vibrant that has all his baby's pictures on it. Any help stepping me through this would be awesome. I have zero screen visibility, but you can tell there is some activity. The home buttons light up at the bottom.
^^ The exact same thing happened to me this weekend. I'm working on fixing it. I can't seem to get into CWM either, so no adb pull to get a backup yet. I can't even seem to get into download mode. mwmcginn, what ROM is your brother using? For the record, I was using the MIUI 1.4.29, I think. I'm not sure if there is a physical problem with the screen or if this is software.
I have the same problem, my screen got cracked and got my replacement via insurance. I just now realized the old one has to be sent back and having MIUI on it, I went to download mode (knowing the steps) and flashed back to JFD. Now I don't have any debugging enabled or root access or CWM installed.
What options do I have? Is there an ODIN that come prerooted and with CWM that I can then try adb?
Someone please help, as I don't really feel comfortable sending my phone full of private data to them.
Thank you.

I tried to fix mine (taking things apart usually fixes them, right?) and ended up cracking my screen. Now I get to pay $150 for a new screen, as I use my Vibrant on ATT so no warranty At least my phone will be working again. Going back to an old Nokia suuuucks!

This sucks man...
There must be some way to automatically load the sd card in windows. I even tried in Mac, as I read somewhere that it loads as soon as usb is plugged... Well I did that on my bro's mac and nothing happened, unless there are some commands that I have to follow... I am a dummy when it comes to Mac
Any other ideas?

Okay, so here is what I got. I am running my atrix using nottachtrix. I am running a modified webtop/ubuntu using webtop2sd and I use the lapdock when I'm in
A week ago, I dropped my phone and really messed up the touch screen. I could try and repair it, but I opted to get a shiny brand new phone from my provider.
But I can still use my setup as a netbook. The only problem is that the phone part of my atrix eats a lot of memory. Is there anyway I can cripple or delete the phone partition and still be able to run webtop?
Thanks for any advice you guys got.
Ken
not really, except if you want to set up a whole new linux, so to say, directly on it so that it boots only linux to hdmi. you could try with gentop and a modded init.rc in the boot.img
Yeah I just heard about gentop and was wondering if I could modify the device to do that. I'll look it up! Thanks for the suggestion
I do not think gentop (or any other distro) is going to help. The problem is almost certainly on the droid "side" of the world.
You mighrt see if you can find a way to shut down the phone display (though I presume this will also kill AIW - the "phone" app that runs on webtop).
Or go to a terminal and use top to see who is eating time. Then try nuking that.
I have an EVO 4G LTE with a failed touch screen and am seeking a way to desperately pull pictures/video off local memory. My phone was set to charge only prior to it failing, so I am unable to pull files via USB and my wifi was turned off.
I believe my only hope lies in this -
Is there a way to turn on USB debugging without touch screen interaction? Is there an app that I can download from Play that'll do this automatically without any interaction from my end?
Is there an app that I can download via play that'll automatically turn on my phones wireless? If so, perhaps I can hit it's IP and pull files this way.
Any other ideas?

You should be able to do a full back up with adb but I don't remember how exactly.

From my understanding... to use adb, I need to be in USB debugging mode, which I am unable to activate without the touch screen being functional. Perhaps I'm incorrect... and hopefully so...
FYI - I will be willing to pay for a solution that allows me to extract my pictures/video from my cell. I can not lose these memories. To anyone that can provide any help it'll be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Never mind, probably won't work
can't sprint fix the touch screen??? or u could always replace it ur self hun

That's weird. I had a touch screen act up and Sprint replaced it within an hour. Maybe you need to try another Sprint store?

Probably wouldn't hurt to call and find out where your nearest Sprint repair center is. That's where you need to go.

Are you rooted?? Can't you go into recovery and mount your internal memory and access it from your PC.
My phone is not rooted. When I go to recovery mode, I'm presented with a triangle and a red exclamation point. Will rooting my phone allow me access to internal memory? I'm open to suggestions.
Just go to a corporate/repair store, they can either replace your digitizer or retrieve your photos for you. If you go to a 3rd party sprint store they won't fix it they will just order you a new/referb phone or refer you to a corporate store.

68 bucks on eBay will you a brand new screen. I'd go that option before dealing with sprint and their crap. There's a few good instructional videos on YouTube that show you how to replace screen.

These folks sell OEM parts:

I haven't dealt with them so YMMV
Use adb.
"adb pull (location of your files)”
So if you want pictures, you could do adb pull /sdcard/DCIM and that will give you the whole folder with all of your photos.

First off, thanks to everyone popping in providing suggestions. As of now, I still have had no luck pulling my data off internal memory. I've taking it to both 3rd party stores and corporate stores and they've each said that the other is more lenient with replacing touch screens. Go figure. I've also been told that Sprint is not authorizing taking this phone apart and that parts are not yet available.
With some digging, I've discovered that the HTC EVO 4G LTE uses the same screen and digitizer as the One X and as one poster above linked, can be purchased online.
Gumby - I've tried this method, but when I input the adb devices command, my phone does not appear. From everything I've read, this method would require the phone to be in USB debugging mode; however, I hope that I'm wrong.
Can anyone provide some insight into what I'll need to purchase to get my touch screen functional? From my understanding I need to purchase both the screen and the digitizer and replace these items. Keep in mind my phone is fully functional, but does not register any touch input.

Does it respond to touch in recovery?

I have a Droid Razr that had a small accident that left the lcd screen shattered, but the Gorrilla glass intact. I now use this phone with my Lapdock and it works perfectly. My problem is that I have been trying to find a way to upgrade the phone to JB with the leaked version that got released on Christmas Eve.
The screen doesn't not work at all. The soft buttons work fine and so do the external buttons. Both ports work as well. The screen does not light up nor does it accept any input. The lapdock will start up as soon as the phone gets completely booted.
My question is there a way to upgrade the phone from ICS to JB without using the recovery menu. I can't navigate the recovery menu, so I can't install the zip file. If I had the two original files that came from the cache system folder, I could just reboot the phone and it would upgrade, right? If that is the case, does anyone have those original files that I could download?
I would love to upgrade this phone now instead of waiting for the OTA. Newer is always better.
By the way the phone got slammed in the house door and the frame is bent, so there is no fixing the phone at this point. The only use is to use it as a permanent dock on my lapdock 500.
Thanks to anyone that helps me or for even reading this post!
Do you suspect that you are able to select the options however can't see what you're doing? in that case I would search a video tutorial for a generic similar installation and simply follow the same steps using their screen as your guide.

I thought of that and tried it without success. I don't know how far through the process I get, cause I can't see the screen, but I suspect it might be when I am trying to get from the Android to the recovery menu. I really don't know if I get to it on the first try or not. It is such a crap shoot. You just don't know if you make a mistake or not. very frustrating. Thanks for the reply.
Hi all,
About a month ago, I dropped my Asus Memo FHD 10. It only looked like it cracked the screen in the bottom corner where it hit the ground, but it seems there is some other internal weirdness going on. Anyway, I bought a new one and was wondering how hard it was to open them up and pull the drive out of the old one and stick it in the new one? Is that even possible? Would it just boot up since the hardware should essentially be the same? Just the old one was already rooted and I had everything setup the way I like it. Hate to have to go through all that again. Any help or tips would be appreciated. -Thanks-

Theoretically it's possible but it requires some electronics knowledge etc. I would love to see someone do it.
Also there is always the risk of ruining your new device as well so even if you knew how to do it and you wanted to risk it I wouldn't advice it. Unfortunately the only safe way is to go through all that process again (root etc.).
