Constant WLAN traffic on _every_ S3? (WLAN icon activity nearly constantly) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
ive figured out a weird "bug" on the S2 already and the same goes for the S3.
nearly every sec it receives traffic over wlan - even with EVERYTHING deactivated or ports blocked by droidwall.
Traffic Monitor (app) shows me constant "system traffic" (goes higher by nearly every sec)
on EDGE&HSDPA theres no such usage/traffic, Traffic monitor shows me 0 system traffic nearly.
so is that ICS related ?
ive not seen that on the S2 with 2.3gbread or desire @2.3

Using ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF and wifi

I have a broadcast receiver that listens for ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF and then changes the wifi state based on the screen status, using the Alarm Manager to schedule wifi states.
I am having a problem because when I turn the device on, I am able to connect to networks just fine, but the WiFi icon in the notification bar is false. Instead of showing the blue connected icon (honeycomb), it shows a faint white status, almost looking like the wifi is off. It almost looks like the status when it is in the process of connecting, but not as white.
I have even commented out the section that turns the wifi back on during wake up, but when I connect by manually turning on WiFi, I still get the incorrect icon.
Any ideas why this is happening?
My understanding is that Grey wifi icon = Connected and green/blue icon = connected to google (for push and sync services)
No. I just turned off the sync service and it still shows the blue icon.
I just tested the app on a 2.2 tablet and it doesn't have this problem, but 2.2. only has one connected icon. Bummer . . . this seems to be a honeycomb specific problem. Anyone out there know a way around this?

Mobile Data Connectivity Issues

My Amaze is having some serious Mobile data (4g/2g) connectivity issues. The problem is this:
1. When turning the screen on, the notification bar shows no mobile data connection, regardless of how many bars I have. Mobile data connection is always enabled under quick settings, but for some reason the phone still can't establish a connection for quite some time, or until toggling mobile data on/off a few times.
2. After finally getting a connection, the phone has further problems connecting. Even though 4g/3g/2g icon is present on notification bar and mobile data is enabled in quick settings, using browser will return only "page not found" errors, and apps will not function properly due to them not having a network connection (foursquare and spotify most especially). Looking at the 4g icon on the notification bar, I can see the "up" arrow flashing as if the phone is sending data, but the "down arrow" is dead as a doornail, not lighting up or receiving anything back. This happens regardless of how many bars I have.
3. On the rare occasion that the phone's mobile data connection does work, it's super slow and acts more like 2g than 4g. Simple web pages take anywhere from around 30 seconds to a minute to load, and spotify cannot stream a song without having to buffer constantly.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Or had experience with it? Just in case your wondering, I haven't gone over my 5gb data plan yet (see attached image).
Issue resolved.
Apparently this problem is a combination of 2 glitches:
1. When upgrading to a new phone, despite how much data you used in your plan during the billing cycle, on the T-Mobile My Account website, the widget which shows how much data you've used will only reflect the data you've used on the currently activated device. Before I upgraded to the Amaze, I had exceeded my 5gb limit on my Nexus One and was being throttled by T-mobile to lower speeds. My next billing cycle doesn't start until Dec 27th, so despite the fact that I've only used about 70mb on my new Amaze, the 6 gb I already used on my Nexus One still counts for this month's billing cycle even though the T-Mobile website doesn't reflect it.
2. When throttling, the Amaze, which by default is set to WCDMA/GSM auto, is supposed to automatically switch itself off of 4g and only allow 3g/2g connections. It doesn't. For some reason, it stays with the 4g connection even though the connection is, at best, intermittent. This is the cause of the "page not found" errors and app network errors I was having.
So, for anyone else who is wondering how to remedy this, the fix is simple. Go into Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode, then tap "GSM only". This will cut off the problematic 4g connection while still allowing for 3g/2g connections. While noticeably slower (especially where I live, since the Florida panhandle only has 2g and 4g, no 3g), the mobile data connection is solid. Have yet to have any connection errors or experience any intermittency. Still, can't wait until the 27th when I can test out the full power of the 4g connection.

[Q] Battery drain WiFi related

ZTE Grand X In, Android 4.0.4.
Google Talk services are draining battery, that seems to be known problem. But, this issue for this topic is different one.
I checked Better Battery Stats, Better WiFi. Seems that wake related to wifi is the main issue many times.
The problem is - when I have WiFi hotspot, good signal, got connection, but do not get network access (needs to be authenticated), all of that in background (no alert, no visible action on screen). So, on WiFi screen I can see connected, but actually I did not get network access, so all services which need network access (including Google services) are simultaneously trying to go to network, to get updates or any other data and - that is draining battery heavily - access to network is not existing.
Anybody experienced this? How to fix this issue?
So, connected to WiFi hotspot, very good signal, the WiFi is connected.
No network access (WiFi needs to be authenticated), all of that in background (no alert, no visible action on screen).
For example - trying to reach 8.8.8.8 - Google DNS does not work
Phone is rooted (just to say that - I may install any application that would be helpful, also, access to configuration files available).
What needs to be done? Which parameters are to be reconfigured?
How to control the number of attempts Android is doing from different applications to access network resources?

Question How to silence the WiFi connected sound?

Connected to a hotel WiFi network with my Pixel 6a, every few seconds/minutes, irregularly, the phone makes the default notification sound. After much f***ing around, I determined that it happens every time the hotel's generally fast but somewhat intermittent WiFi reconnects on the phone. It's one of those WiFi networks with a 'lobby ambassador' which intercepts connections and asks you to login, and thereafter it remembers the device MAC and does not intercept your device's communication attempts anymore.
Every time the phone reconnects to this network, which is frequent because apparently my room is a bit out at the edge of coverage, after the layer 1/2 negotiation for the phone to establish the link, the WiFi client on the phone briefly shows "authenticating", and then the connection is established (without user interaction) and immediately the phone emits the default notification sound. So my phone is irregularly and frequently chirping Android 13's default "popcorn" sound. It's super annoying.
I've looked at Settings -> Notifications -> Apps, show System -> Android System - it's not any of those. I turned off all Android System notifications and it still does this.
What is the actual notification class and specific notification type on (Android 13 on) the Pixel 6 series (I have a 6a) which causes the default notification sound to play every time WiFi (re)connects please, so I can turn off this torture without silencing the whole phone?
(My one last test, ongoing at present, was to change the hotel WiFi network Privacy configuration from "randomized MAC" to "device MAC"; I don't see why that should change anything, because it's my device that is audibly notifying me that it's (re)connected; the network to which it's (re)connecting is not a new network every time - for that I might expect a notification).
thanks,
You could temporarily enable Do Not Disturb with exceptions for your usual apps? Otherwise I'm not sure if there's a way to disable that. It'd make sense if your change from randomized -> device MAC fixed this, though, as the network should remember your device rather than make you log in again every time, but that's a big should that's not in your control.
Well, damnedest thing. Looks like turning off privacy/random-MAC mode for this WiFi stopped the notification. Doesn't make any sense at all, since my phone knows that the hotel WiFi is the same one to which it had connected before, even if the hotel WiFi might think my phone is new every few minutes...
