I read that you can't root from Amon Ra after running the ICS RUUs. What's the right way to obtain root after an ICS upgrade?
Install one of the rooted stock roms
What if I just want to root the stock ROM? The phone is s-off.
then you want this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703732
I don't get it. How come we can't root it ourselves?
Edit: I see that link includes an SU zip. Does flashing that from recovery yield root?
Go here....http://androidsu.com/superuser/, download Superuser and su binary. Flash both in recovery.
If you arent worried about warranty just use Hasoons root app to reunlock your bootloader and root through the app. His app is in the roll up dev sticky. But again, this will, for anytime in the future, when you relock the bootloader, it will say relocked aka tampered and you gets no warranty
I have rooted the ics ruu by flashing the superuser.zip thru recovery. It's not anything technically challenging. I do that because I like the stock rom and being able to remove what I want with titanium backup.
Yuuuuup
after i installed RUU v3.14.605.5, i then unlocked the bootloader again. then i tried installing root the normal way i did it before but it said i had no root in root checker app.but then i read a post that i had to flash a zip file (Attacthed) which would allow me to have root and it worked. im on the stock rom of the rezound with the ICS leak v3.14.605.5. i now have root. (Currently Searching for the Post stating what i said) OMG lol after so much searching i finally found the thread. welp here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23897942#post23897942
if i remember correctly, you flash ICE-EnableRoot.zip in recovery first, then you flash the SU that you have (Flashable SU) second. then reboot. No need for wipe.
To be clear the phone needs to be s-off for this method? I'm on the latest leak coming from stock, locked, s-on.

I don't think so. I believe I was S-on when I installed the RUU and then when I tried rooting, it told me I wasn't, then I read that post about flashing that ICE EnableRoot and it worked. THEN I believe.after I gained root access, I did the S-off procedure.
I'd say Unlock, Root, and then S-off. Because you need to be HTCDev unlocked, and rooted in order to be able to do the S-off procedure.

Folks,
I'm planning on picking up a Rezound this coming Friday, but before I do I want to make sure that there is reputable root out on this device. I've been reading through the threads and all I see is a temp root. First, which root have people used and recommend? What I think a temp root means is that simply I can root it, but if Verizon sends an OTA - I'll be unrooted again, is that correct? Also, if I root and load a new ROM I'm assuming that becomes a moot point and then I'm permanently rooted.
I know, newbie questions... sorry.
There is no temp root method on a phone that has the ota from the end of January. I'm sure most phones shipping now have this. To permanent root you need to unlock the boot loader on the htcdev website, flash amon ra recovery and then install superuser from the devolper menu in recovery.

There is definitely a permanent root method and a good development community for the rezound. I perm rooted my phone the first week I got it and haven't looked back.

Yes you can go custom Rom immediately. I never did a nandroid backup. Just unlocked bootloader installed amon ra recovery. Flashed Rom after Rom lol
Just make sure to read thoroughly before flashing. If flashing GB roms most will require you to install the kernel and boot image but will basically be automated. Just nerd to hit the power button in bootloader then follow the steps.
If ICS you MAY need to run the ruu leak or run a patch for older firmware.
Sounds difficult but will make more sense when you are performing the flash.
So after finding out about the OTA update to 4.0, I decided to get rid of my custom rom, de root, and try it out. Seems good so far, but I haven't seen any info on rooting this yet. Anyone know if there is a way to do this yet? Or even a crazy guess as to when this will happen?

why on earth would you "deroot" just wait 24 hours to flash the rooted version then you wouldn't have to worry about that. the bootloaded has changed... unlikely anyone will be able to root. unless the CD works on 4.0

Bummer. I de rooted because in order to run an ics Rom I needed a custom kernel, and either the kernel or the Rom made the phone freeze up one in ten times I turned off the screen. Wasn't worth it to me.
To root the ota all you have to do is apply a custom recovery .IMG file via fastboot or a pg86img.zip file in bootloader. Then install via the new recovery Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip (google it, easy to find). Boot into the system and download busybox via the playstore and then install busybox via the app. That's it. You will have full root with busybox.

Or if s-off just replace what's in an ruu with the recovery/hboot to what u want and boot into bootloader and happy flashing

I'm new to this phone, coming from an epic 4g, e s off and hboot was confusing at first, but from what I understand I'm s on hboot 1.5. I will have to see what I can do when I have my computer.

Already ppl asking for root on the new update smh it might take a long time just like s-off for 1.5 or no time at all but I would just wate for a stock rooted Rom of the ota update
Phone:HTC Evo 3D CMDA
HTC Sense:3.6
Software number:MeanROM ICS v2.0
Kernel version:?????
Baseband version:1.06.00.1216
Build number:1.13.662.2_RC
HBOOT:1.50 S-off (juopunutbear)
Recovery:4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC 5
Cant get root access.
So while browsing yesterday I came across the news that ICS ota update for Sprint EVO 3D has started rolling out.
I was on Mean ROM ICS 2.4.
I immediately went into recovery did a superwipe , relocked the bootloader using fastboot and started installing 2.17 ruu so as to get ICS update OTA.
I was successful in doing on what I had planned to . Booted up into system got OTA update and upgraded to ICS.
Played around with it for some time before I got bored and decided I need to root it.
So I then went into fastboot...... Unlocked the bootloader again ... flashed cwm touch recovery and installed SU 3.0.** .zip hoping that I would be able to install busybox and get root access.
Tadaaaa surprise surprise !!!!!!!
Latest superuser version installed there but it was not helping at all.
Downloaded busybox but it wont install and no matter what I tried I didnt get root access.
Above that my phone has gotten slow now and I no more get smooth transitions across while scrolling .
I find myself in trouble now.
Could any one suggest how I could get root or perform and fresh install again.
Also I was unlocked hboot 1.5 s-on which got updated to hboot 1.58 I guess.
So now its unlocked hboot 1.58 S-ON
I am not habitual to the spiking during transitions and it for some reason annoys me. I could really use some help here.
Rooting 101- never, ever, ever, ever, ever take any OTA. Simple. As others have said recently and since rooting android started, wait a day for the awesome devs to post the rooted rom.

Well I must have gotten lucky. I decided i'd rather run stock without any root instead of having to deal with pulling my battery 20 times a day. Tried several roms, custom kernels made it faster, but weren't very stable. Now on stock ics rooted, don't see the big deal. It was easy to root again, and everything I was doing before works just the same. The only problem I'm having is getting dsp manager to work, but it didn't work on my custom rom either.
Perfectly satisfied with the ota.

Same result with 3.0.7 but for some reason if you go to http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and download 3.1.3 it works just fine
Just sharing my upgrade/root experience - was running ICS Cool Sense v7, S-OFF, HBOOT 1.04 ENG. Downloaded 2.17 PG86IMG from goo-inside.me site. Flashed that and it automatically re-locked my phone but kept S-OFF. Booted up with HBOOT 1.5, downloaded OTA and installed it. Now on HBOOT 1.58, unlocked phone again with HTCDEV. Flashed CWM Touch Recovery via Fastboot then Superuser 3.1.3 in Recovery. Full root - no issues.

Same here. Had all kinds of issues and tried 3.1.3 from Recovery about 30 minutes ago. Worked like a charm - full root.
P.S. I have always been stock with S-On so it works either way.
I did this with 1.5 hboot s off. Just unrooted and locked bootloader loaded up the 2.17 pg86img.zip and took the ota. Relocked bootloader and flashed cwm recovery and Su 2.3.6 (I think...) And I'm back in business with full root. works like a charm and very easy. Even for me and I'm a total noob. now I just gotta figure out how to add tweaks and remove bloatware.

What is the best way to get to stock so I can accept the ICS update and re root?
I am familiar with how to relock my bootloader..
Thank you all
PS I called verizon today because my rezound is a bit fishy with the charger wanting to replace it to under warranty , they no longer have them available and are shipping the Razr Maxx as a substitute...UGGGH.
Don't accept that Motorola garbage.... Less processor speed and terrible screen also less dev support. Oh and you don't need to get back to stock to get ics just flash the ics ota in bootloader

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you wouldn't do that for the over the air update.
You would need to flash stock recovery (assuming you've flashed a custom recovery), and then they can install the update through Android, like normal.
The guide i posted takes you through this process, as i did it.

Oh, and if you flashed Clockwork Mod, this is likely causing your charging problems. This is why i used AR Recovery 3.15 instead.
You can either take the OTA update or install an RUU.
Both ways, you have to relocked your bootloader or S-OFF.
For the OTA, you should be stock everything.
Stock recovery and rom.
For an RUU, just make sure you are on a rom that matches your firmware.
Gingerbread ROM on Gingerbread firmware.

For the OTA, you need to be stock everything or it won't install. This is why I included instructions on how to revert back to stock recovery before trying the OTA.
You do not need to re-lock your hboot if you have S-OFF. What happens is that the OTA update re-locks the bootloader and you have to unlock it again if you want to play with your device (like, re-install AR Recovery). Or, if you have S-Off, you can install a different hboot that's already unlocked, and then you can flash custom recoveries, etc. But since messing with the hboot is very risky, I chose to re-unlock my hboot the HTC way after installing the OTA.
*important edit*
The OTA may have worked for me with an unlocked hboot because I was S-Off prior to updating. If you're not S-Off, you may indeed need to re-lock before updating.
However, it may be just as easy to get S-Off. It's actually very easy. I will make a very easy guide for this as well. Let me know, and I can help you through it. I'm not an expert, but it doesn't take an expert. The hardest part for me was just finding a good, uncomplicated guide - doesn't seem to be one at the moment, though there is a ton of info out there.
Anyway, let me know if you want help getting S-Off.

Flashing a recovery won't affect root. The OTA will break root, but it's simple to restore. That's the easy part.
What I think you should do first is achieve S-OFF (you do not need to re-lock if you achieve S-OFF. It's easy, and it makes switching ROMs easier).
Then flash stock recovery.
Then accept OTA update(s).
Then unlock again (rather than mess with your bootloader).
Then flash superSU to restore root.
All per my instructions. I think they will make it easy as possible for you. The hardest thing, I think, is trying to find a step-by-step guide on all of this.
Just my opinion. There's a lot of info out there, but it's hard to sort through which steps you should choose to do, and when you should do them.

Months ago I used HTCDev to unlock and flashed TWRP recovery and su-2.3.6.3.zip from this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I was underwhelmed with the MIUI ROM and got curious about Sprint's ICS update, so I relocked the bootloader and ran the 2.17 RUU.exe, then updated to 2.89 OTA. After that I could use my original HTCDev Unlock_code.bin to unlock the bootloader, but su-2.3.6.3 would not give me proper root access (verified with Root Checker app). Thankfully downloading Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and flashing it through recovery worked.
I now have root with the stock Sprint ICS. Why? Because I wanted to keep the 3D and Wimax functionality (i know, i know) while still being able to run TiBackup to freeze the goddamned pre-installed apps that everyone hates. I'm sure this is stated elsewhere in the forums, but I read your post before I resolved my issue so I thought I'd come back and reply just in case you or anyone else were still grappling with it.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me to root a brand new stok rom on the Sprint evo 3d!
Just for future reference when you download a super user zip, notice the letters next to superuser efghi those letters represent the past android os's (e)clair, (f)royo, (g)ingerbread, (h)oneycomb, and (I)cecream sandwhich. Always look for that if you plan to root a stock Rom.

If you unlocked through HTC unlocker, you need to push a recovery and the superuser files to your phone. This way you'll have custom recovery and super user access on the stock ROM.
You'll also want to make sure that your firmware and radios are upgraded, but be careful not to mess up your hboot.
If you'll be flashing custom ROM's often or you want to manually upgrade firmware then you'll want to be s-off.
Regaw method is for unlocking, not for gaining s-off. S-off method is via dirty racun. Running dirty racun on your setup will upgrade your hboot and reset your device.
HTH
yezzzuuRR! u need to run dirty racun to get s-off :good:
Your best bet is to use the s-off utility as instructed, and then fastboot a custom recovery to your phone and then flash a custom ROM.
Flashing a custom ROM will take care of the super user thing, so that way you don't have to worry about that part.
Your biggest hurdle might be pushing the recovery via fastboot.
The nice thing about the regaw root method is that it unlocked your phone anf also pushed the superuser files and the recovery to your phone all in one button push.
Hope I'm making sense you to

Wait now I'm confused.
Did you do the regaw method at all? If it was successful, then your phone already has a recovery. If not, then you'll have to fastboot recovery to your phone.
no regaw started then it got stuck or stopped when it tried to get the unlock key which i had all ready done with htc unlocker.

Dude read the stickies in q&a and development. Your unlocked. Now you need to flash twrp recovery and then su zip or a rooted ROM of your choice.
if its s-off you want go to the dirty raccoon thread and read the first post a few times before attempting.
Good luck
