[Q] Still Downloading old mail - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S3 continues to download old mail (most of which I know has been deleted) from as far back as February (and continuing backwards). This happens on several accounts (BT, Orange, MSN).
Any ideas?

The phone can't download something that does not physically exist. Even Samsung can't do that...
If you are using IMAP your other/old client might've moved the email to the Trash folder instead of actually deleting them. Note that this will also cause your email account to fill up.

The old email account probably didn't "update to server" correctly, so emails that were deleted from the client (phone) weren't actually deleted on the sever.

Still doing it
Cleared all online servers of messages I can find, and the deleted folders and the trash from PC and phone. The s3 is now downloading messages (emails) from last September. From Freeserve (orange) BTinternet and MSn. All of which i am sure have been cleared.
I am deleting from Phone, email and trash folders, ditto pc.

The phone cannot download messages that do not exist.
So they have to exist somewhere, even if you can't see them in your provider's webinterface.
Try using a good IMAP client (such as Thunderbird) and check if there is any folder with contents.

[Q] How to delete IMAP emails from SGSII?

Hi,
I am trying to delete emails from my IMAP account an my SGSII (Samsung stock emailing programm).
Now my problem is that all emails I delete once just reappear the next time I sync with my IMAP account. So its simply impossible to delete emails on my phone.
This problem also exists on the GalaxyTab as far as I know.
Hotmail works fine(but hotmail doesnt use IMAP as far as I know).
One simple solution would be to just not use the samsung emailing program. I tried K9 today, but I kinda dont like the fact that it doesnt come with an widget. I also like the stock program better.
Any clue what I am doing wrong?
its also not possible to open most attachments directly from inside the emailing application(.pdf,.jpg etc.).
It does work occationally but must of the time it doesnt.
Solved:
Not using Polaris Office did the trick for me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
How did you resolve the IMAP email problem? I'm experiencing the same behaviour. Gmail IMAP works fine (with the stock email client, not the stock Gmail client). However, my work email which is IMAP doesn't work correctly.
I simply stopped using the stock program.
And now I kinda started to love K9.
But K9 didn't get along with my hotmail account(it has no IMAP;always redownloaded old emails;I had a data usage of 200mb in one day^^) so I started to auto. redirect all my mails to gmail. That works flawless til now.
oh man, same here!
I use the same settings on Nexus One, V880 or even Ipod Touch, both works except SG2! any clue yet?
No I didnt find no solution.
I am happy with K9 now .
Greets.
Apparently using POP instead of IMAP, you have the option to delete from the server... Of course IMAP is supposed to do this anyway, but worth considering POP - especially if the other advantages of IMAP are of no interest to you.
Personally, folder synchronisation means nothing if it can't even sync deleted emails...
I tried to chase this up with Samsung support, but of course they're useless... It's obviously a software bug, but they suggested a reflash and then trip to the service centre if that doesn't fix it...
We all know a trip to the service centre will certainly not fix it if a reflash wont...
Curiously, I've got a VHA ROM on my phone, and wondering what everyone else has, presuming it might be an issue in the branded ROM, but not in the generic ROM...
I'm sure I'm not the only one who cares, but I did a little bit of research, and although it doesn't seem to help, there's setting the IMAP path prefix (usually 'INBOX'), which should direct deleted emails into INBOX.Trash as opposed to the android Trash folder, and therefore delete them off the server.
Sadly, trying 20 variations, I still couldn't get it to work... but it might work with your email provider (just didn't with mine)
If all else fails, and you really want to use the Samsung email app (which I do, since K9 does not have activesync Exchange support - only the other one, which doesn't help me), instead of deleting emails, just go: Menu/Move to Folder/INBOX.Trash - this is the same as what Delete should be doing...
Hope that helps somewhat...

GMail App Question

I had this same problem with my HD2 and never found a solution i thought this would've been resolved with the GS2 unless im doing something wrong here, basically when i click on my Gmail app and delete messages and later on that evening on my laptop not all the messages are deleted, with my HD2 none of them used to delete when i tried doing it on the phone yet when i delete them on my laptop they delete ok, with the GS2 i deleted 30+ emails earlier ive just checked my laptop and 12 of the same emails i "deleted" are still there, does anyone know what's going on here?
Also why do i always have to "click to view pictures" on the Gmail app?
Is anyone else having this problem with the Gmail app?
Damn im amazed im the only one having this problem usually there's at least a couple of people in the XDA community with a similar issue, it's a bit annoying having to delete emails again, and also having to click on "show pictures" in order to view the images is a bit annoying too.
I don't delete, but I do label every email, and then archive. I quite often find messages re-appear after archiving, showing as unread, even though no new messages have appeared inside the thread.
This occurred on my old Nokia 5800, it actually seems to happen less on my SGS2.
Thanks for your response, i would just like to be able to delete the emails after ive looked at them on my phone and not have to delete them again on my laptop, sometimes the emails do delete out of 30 emails i deleted 2 days ago 12 were still there when i checked a few hours later that evening, yet this morning i deleted about 15 emails on my GS2 yet when i checked on my laptop they were still there showing as unread, i don'tu nderstand this.
Surely i cant be the only one having this issue?
I delete emails a lot using the Gmail app and I've never noticed this problem - weird.

I had the same problem with my HD2 running Android, on the HD2 forums last year someone posted a fix for this before but it only worked for some people and unfortunately i wasn't one of them.
I'm thinking will i ditch the Gmail app altogether and just use m.google.com in X-Xcope browser i have tried deleteing emails via m.google.com before and they do delete, the Gmail app though is handy and something i use a lot.

You don't have that option in the gmail app.
Does anyone know if i can create a shortcut for my Gmail on the phone i have the m.gmail.com saved in my browser (X-Scope) but i cant see any function for copying a shortcut to my main screen on phone, ive just deleted some emails in the m.gmail.com in X-Scope and checked Gmail on my laptop and the emails are gone so there's absolutely no doubt there is something amiss here with the Gmail app so im looking to delete it but id prefer to have a shortcut of Gmail on my phones main screen.
cheers
Also on the m.gmail.com you don't have to click on "show pictures" every time cos the pictures just show automatically.

Long-hold the homepage to add a shortcut (not an application) and it should give you the option of "bookmark".

cheers id forgotten about this, funnily enough when i do this it doesn't show me the bookmarks from X-Scope but from the stock browser which i don't use, im wondering why i cant see the bookmarks from X-Scope?
Anyway it also gives you the option for a "Gmail Label" shortcut but im not sure if this particular Gmail shortcut comes from the Gmail app which is no good to me, or m.gmail.com which is the one i want?
This Android Gmail app seriously needs improving like the Facebook one which is also crap

SGSII Problems with .wav email attachments

Good morning,
I just purchased my first Android Phone (SGSII - ATT) and to my unpleasant surprise, the phone cant load or play the .wav email attachments that we receive.
After doing some research on this - I gave up and wanted to share this issue with you.
Everything that I found so far was related to downloading a 3rd party app that plays the .wav files.
Here is what happens on my phone:
- When I receive an email with a .wav attachment the phone does show in the email list that there is an attachment
- When I open the email, then there is no sign for an attachment
- At the bottom of the email there is a button "Load More Details"
- When I press that button the phone displays "Downloading" and it goes into an infinite loop and never downloads anything.
I like the phone so far, but if I cant play my voice messages on it, will have to go back to my iPhone 4G... and I really dont want to go back to that slow and small phone
You help is appreciated!
Thanks

Are you using the GMail app or the other (built in) Mail app?
I just tested mine out, playing a WAV file in both email apps, and it worked fine. Showed the attachment, downloaded, and played via the built in media player.
You mentioned you installed some 3rd party app to play the WAV files. This might be your problem. I would suggest that you either uninstall this app or disassociate it from .WAV files and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, keep in mind that all WAVs are not the same. There are different internal codecs and some are incompatible with certain media players.
But I would say that this other app is more likely to be causing the problem. At least from the info you told us.
I am using the Email app (White envelop stamped with a blue & white @ symbol).
I only downloaded the 3rd party app after trying the .wav playback.
The phone refuses to even display the attachment when I open the email. In the list mode I can see that there is an attachment, but when I open the email there is no attachment...weird.
Should I be using the Gmail app for my exchange account sync?
Thank you

If it's not private, forward me the WAV you are trying to play: enki -at- phalse -dot- org. I'll see if I can play it on mine, and if not, what the differences are.
I'm not sure if the Gmail app is compatible or not with exchange, you may need to use the other built in email app (as you are).
You could also try using another, non exchange based, email provider and forward it there, just to eliminate a problem on the exchange server side.

I will forward it in a second...
In the mean time - I did test sendimg myself an mp3 file to the same Exchange account and that one worked fine.
I also sent the .wav file to my Gmail account and was also able to play it via the Gmail app on the phone.
So, it seems like the problem I am having is only for those .wav files in my Exchange Account
Tested using the email app with my corp exchange account, no problem what so ever with .wav files. It might be a problem with your exchange server that filtered out the attachment.

That is really weird because I never had any issues with my iPhone (s).
I just sent out a test .wav file to a couple of iPhone and Andoid users (not SGS2 ATT) and they can all open the file.
Here is the screenshot from the screen I get after clicking on the "Load More Details" button. There is definitely something behind the downloading message but I cannot get to it nor read it. BTW this never downloads anything, it just hangs liker that

Got your email and it played without any problems on my SG2. Used the standard email app and hit 'preview'. Downloaded and launched the media player and I heard your "test" recording.
So that eliminated the email and WAV file from being at fault. So it's down to either your device (unlikely, but possible) or the integration with your exchange server (more likely). To eliminate/vindicate the second possibility, try creating a standard IMAP/POP email account, forward the message there, and try and download/play it from the same email app. If it works, you will need to fix it on the exchange side.
I just tested again using the same Cisco phone voicemail at work and it work as well. From what I can tell from your screen shot, it is not an attachment but a URL to some internal location that is not accessible to the public networks (cell connection). Unfortunately it is hidden by the loading icon. I can only see file://.....
Does your exchange email ever show HTML email on your phone at all. It seems that your exchange server is using the rather old Exchange 2003 ActiveSync protocol that strips off the HTML and other stuff. That's why you have 'Load more details' button (just like Hotmail).
I am not sure exactly how our exchange is setup but I just found out that if I rotate the phone to landscape and then back to portrait it shows the attachment and it can play it....
I am not sure why it does that, but I have the feeling that this phone will be going back to BestBuy...

I'll try to be polite, but.....this thread was dead . Bringing it back up after 10 months of being dead and buried is called necroing here, and its frowned upon. I'm sure the OP found a solution as its been...10 months. I've never had this problem on any rom I've run.

[Q] Email - POP3 Server Issue (Deleting from Server)

Hi. Is there a known glitch with the Android Email App where it takes emails off the server when in POP3 configuration, even when you have the "Don't Delete From Server" option on "Never"? I'm experiencing this problem. Is there a fix?
Thanks,
-Adam
IIRC "Don't delete from server" is a traditional client config setting that controls whether or not the email is deleted at the time it is polled by the POP client. It does not necessarily control whether or not the client later reaches out and tells the server to delete an arbitary message, and I think this ambiguity is the issue.
My guess is Android is deleting the message from the server when it's deleted from the phone. See the last few posts here.
The workaround I see folks using is to set the "last N days" setting low and letting them fall off the phone's view rather than deleting them.
I haven't used POPn in a while so input welcomed from more knowledgeable folks.

I just read through the link. I took the advice of setting up the email client on my computer to leave mail on the server, but it still gets removed when I receive it on my phone.. maybe it's time to call T-Mobile.
But the desktop client leaves it on the server? If so, sounds like an Android problem and I figure TMO will be useless. Hopefully someone else jumps in to clue us in. I don't have a pop+webmail account handy to use for testing (and I'm running CM7).
Are you running the stock T-mobile ROM that came with the phone? Would it be acceptable to try some other (free) POP3 client from the android market?

I know that POP3 is kind of outdated and IMAP is the new popular standard. I'd switch it over to IMAP, but I don't like how when I delete messages from the Inbox, they reappear the next time I check my email.

Thanks,

Actually, I think the weirdness is on the server, since the desktop client won't leave them there either. If you share who the mail provider is someone might chime in with info or a fix.
Dunno any 3rd party pop3 apps, as I don't use them.

[Q] KitKat issue syncing contacts on an exchange server

My understanding is that this is a known issue, I'm looking for a workaround or resolution.
Using KitKat, and the standard AOSP email client, I setup my corporate email account in the usual way. Everything works the way it is supposed to except for syncing contacts.
Normally I have fewer than 100 contacts, but with KitKat I end up with over 600. From my research into this issue it is because KitKat is syncing the "suggested contacts" from exchange, not just the contacts listed in my address book. I'm not sure who made the decision to do that, but it doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
I see this problem on my tablet which is running the CM 11.0 nightlies, but I do not see it on my HTC One running AndroidNow, even though Android Now is at 4.4. That is what tells me that the problem is in Exchange Services for the standard AOSP client. I confirmed this by finding this site:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...4-4-with-gmail-style-ui-and-a-slide-out-menu/
I downloaded the appropriate files and installed the apks on my HTC One. When I setup my corporate email there I started seeing the same issue.
Does anyone have any news or recommendations on this issue? By the way, I'm not looking for "install such-and-such email client, it's better" type recommendations. I've tried the majority of them already.
Thanks
It is interesting to me that no one has anything to say on this issue. Perhaps no one saw my post?
At any rate, I found a "solution" which is clumsy but seems to do the trick. The suggestion I found in the google forums was to delete the "Suggested Contacts" folder (I did it in the Exchange web mail app), delete the Corporate account and recreate. I did and I now have the correct number of contacts.
From what I have found this problem is caused by code added to KitKat for syncing sub-folders. It is an issue that Google is aware of, but has marked at a very low priority. I assume that means that a real fix for this will be a long time coming.

In case you may not have noticed, there is a open issue for this now:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61979
Im having the same problem with you, but removing the "suggested contacts" folder from Outlook didn't work (not that I should have to do that). It was if the contacts were cached to the phone.... even after removing the account. I even tried disabling sync, putting it in airplane mode, and using "Contact Remover" from the Play Store to delete the contacts from my phone (disabling sync and airplane mode to prevent a total deletion of all contacts on next sync). After that, I removed the account from Android, removed all phone pairings from Exchange (through OWA), and cleared the cache of the phone. As soon as I resynced, they all came back.
I'm beyond pissed. I literally have 5,000 contacts, and I can barely open the People applet. This is ridiculous.

I can't argue with your assessment, especially since it is a known issue that is, apparently, not getting any attention from Google. That is disappointing.

I have this same problem, but it seems to be Exchange email address history (start a new email: start typing address and the autocomplete list appears)that is causing the problem for me. If I delete the history the contact is now longer shown in my contact list. The problem is this history list is ever growing and changing. It seems we are forced to live with excess users until Google gets this fixed.

Ahhh, well that would make sense why deleting the "suggested contacts" folder doesn't fix it. I don't want to flush my autocomplete history. It's quite useful.
In the interim, I'm just 'pushing' my contacts from Touchdown using the "Copy to Phone" option, and not adding the corporate email option for now.
Here is a pretty nice work around to this issue.
Go into outlook and create a new category for all of the contacts you want to sync with your device. Once the contacts are part of the new category, go to your device and in the contacts>>accounts to display>>select the corporate account>> and select which list(select the category you created in outlook>> thats it and resync your contacts.

Agreed, a true fix is still needed. The biggest problem with this solution is making sure you put new contacts into the new category when they are being added.
I have the issue that my phone will not sync to the exchange contacts PERIOD.
It downloaded them fine apparently, but any changes made on the device do not get updated on the server.
WTF? How ****ing stupid is google to break activesync!?
I'm not just having problems with contacts... my entire calendar will not sync. I basically get no meeting reminders. I can log into exchange webmail and check my calendar there, but that is ridiculous.
As for the contacts, none of the tips and tricks in this thread have helped. I have completely deleted "suggested contacts" (which is a shame, because it was actually useful), but my phone is still pulling them from somewhere....
The only thing that works for me is installing Touchdown and using it to sync, then push the contacts to the phone. It does pick up the bullshvt ones...

I can't understand why it cannot be fixed. I don't even fully understand the problem, as I've gone through Outlook/Exchange multiple times cleaning out the "suggested contacts" and still had my phone's contact list spammed with every email address that is and ever was.
It took a long, long time... but I used "Contact Remover" from the Play store and just went down the list checking contacts I wanted to delete. It's much faster than going into each contact, hitting menu, then hitting delete. Still, you have to be careful not to delete contacts you want to keep. Many times, they're named exactly the same as the spam ones.
On a side note, I am struggling to understand why there are so many contacts that have been "augmented" by apps such as Facebook and Lync 2013. I never choose to sync those, but it appears to have done so anyway.
same problem here, contacts on phone (nexus 5) are filled with rubbish now
