PSA: Don't switch the Camera casing. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I made the mistake of switching the camera casing with my fiance's Evo, because she had dropped her phone on some concrete last Saturday, she was so sad. I told her lets switch casings, I'll just sand down her casing and if she likes how it turns out we can switch again. So fast forward to Monday and I started my Google Wallet app to pay for something at Rite-Aid and it said "Not supported". Her Google Wallet said the same thing and they were working fine before.
So remember kids don't switch the Camera casing, that is where the NFC chip is located.

Lol. You sure that's why your wallet stopped working?? Cause everyone that didnt edit their build prop are getting the same error, cause google shut down wallet for EVO LTE

I hope you're right. That is really messed up if Google did that, and it was just a strange coincidence.
Is the NFC chip located int the camera casing? When I took it off I saw some electrical contacts on the casing and assumed it was the NFC chip.

thanks for the PSA

Don't mention it.

Ohh google defintly shut down wallet for us LTE guys. There is also no ETA on when they will turn it back on..
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

yep this needs to be close, it has nothing to do with this... google wallet is cu-put for the most part, i honestly i have no faith in them attempting to fix it

Btw guys the nfc chip is located on the removable cover.... I just tried to scan my nfc tag without the cover and it wouldn't work. Once I put it back on it worked fine....

So is the NFC really located on the cover or maybe the cover is what acts as the antenna
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

The cover has contacts for the NFC chip

Gonna go out on a limb and say this is because the antennae is not there when you remove the cover. Lol
Closing thread now as to not cause confusion. If someone can provide some significant info backing this PM me and we can reopen this then...

Exchanging Rooted EvoLte at Best Buy

Well, just bricked my NFC somehow after flashing a Rom and I guess something didn't reset even tho I cleared out google wallet, precautions, etc.
That's neither here nor there tho. I just want to know if anyone has had trouble exchanging a rooted phone at best buy?
Please give me some suggestions. While google wallet is pretty much a gimmick, I like to be able to have the gimmick. Lol. But if I am stuck with the phone then that's okay too.
Edit: I'm still within 14 days of buying the phone...

If the sales associate at best buy even knows how to get into recovery I'd be surprised..
Does it brick the NFC function or just google wallet ?

NFC secure element not responding. So basically just google wallet is broke as beam will still work. Neither feature is a necessity for me, but I put $ on the card.
Also have WiFi disconnecting like crazy too, so kinda want to exchange it for that since I'm still within 14 days.
What u guys think?

How do you know if you bricked it. I got my prepaid card and flashed another Rom and forgot to reset wallet . Now all wallet does is hang at the activating screen. I just got off the phone with a google rep and he said if I got to the activating part then more that likely your not bricked. He said it won't let you in the app if secure element is bricked . He did say if you got the secure element message than you'll need to replace your phone

I work at BBYM I could careless if a phone was rooted if a basic feature of the phone was broke. Shouldn't have a problem. And like another user said, some people don't even know what recovery is....
Btw you have 30 days to exchange the phone. 14 days to return and get your upgrade back.

Messing up my secure element has worried me too. I accidentally ran regaws root method and didn't reset google wallet, though it didn't brick it for some reason. I am lucky.
Are you getting the secure element message? If not, then you're good and you just need to do the fix that is found in the dev subforum here. I've done it twice and it works. You have to do it after any flash of a Rom.
Also, I really don't get the "im too good for wallet" attitude. I have used it and its very cool! I paid for gas at Sheetz right at the gas pump. Didn't go inside, didn't have to key in debt stuff. And it isn't a gimmick. A gimmick is something rather useless and wallet is something I find useful for me personally. Also, when the iPhone adopts NFC technology and all the Apple zombies begin using it, the popularity will move faster.

This, unfortunately, is true. Except first Apple will announce it as iPay or something so they'll all think it was their idea, and probably sue Google over it as well.
My phone is perfect and if I screwed up wallet I wouldn't bother taking my phone back. From what I read Google isn't even going to support our phones anymore anyways. Unless you have a supported Citicard, I think its dumb to use a credit card just to fund Wallet to then be limited to were you could use it. Wallet is pointless and useless and those who break it won't be missing out on much.
just lock it and ruu the phone or whatever is needed to get rid of that red text on the splash screen and hope for the best. If they are smart enough to boot into the bootloader they are doing it to try to deny a warranty, no other reason to go into it.
I'm not sure if BB even has a policy on that since the unlocking the bootloader thing is your warranty through HTC that is being affected.
Also, if you have never used google wallet I assume you don't have to reset it or whatever when you reflash do you? I have never used it so I never worried about resetting it. I wouldn't care if it didn't work though since I will never use google wallet for anything but maybe trying to get the free money that's on there.
Ok when does the secure element message popup ? When you trying to open the app or when you try to make a purchase?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I exchanged mine the other day at BB for the same reason. The manager reset it a couple times and then just did a swap for a new one. Didn't boot into recovery that I could see, but I was sure to remove root, relock the bootloader & run the RUU first.

Is Google Wallet completely broken????

i havent been able to get it fully set up since I got this damn phone...first it was stuck on activating account...now its sayind my device isnt supported..wtf!! any help???
I am pretty sure what I have read they are trying to get something fixed before they activate it for our phone which is a bummer.
Yes it is. They claim to be working on a fix for it but it has taken them how long so far? I personally think they have just given up on our phone.
There are fixes, but I have still not been able to use it. At McDonalds last night it was stuck on Authorizing Transactions and today at walgreens it would never open the wallet app when I touched it to the terminal.
Works fine for me.
I called and they told me that it was a problem that they are working on but no ETA on the fix... Also it tells me that rooted devices are not supported which I think is BS

Not BS, a rooted device could pose a threat to the secure element of the NFC chip and could potentially exploit card data from it. Remember modders are not majority users, and storing credit card info is a big risk for Google to take.
Now it'll still work with root, but you are taking a risk that something could potentially go wrong.

It comes up where the "your device is not supported for your carrier/country" is. At least mine did.
I actually had to install the gw update before it said secure element not responding.
If I were u and had a perfectly functioning phone I would not root it until the gw is up again. Live to flash roms on my og EVO, but this phone is so awesome without it for now I'm happy w it.

Can my nfc chip be broken but google wallet still work???

I wanna know cuz i've been trying to use it twice now and i get embarrassed cuz i end up having to pay with money. whenever i put it on the pay pass with the screen on and unlocked, it does nothing.... am I doing something wrong????
I've been wondering the same question. Walgreens and McDonalds both haven't worked for me while showing no errors.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
When you look at those machines they should have a green status light.....I went to sprint and tried it once on 5 machines didn't work then when I went to Walgreens and CVS I noticed that both of their machines had a green light on the pay pass icon or on the top. I'm going to state obvious but sometimes the NFC gets checked off I've noticed...

In the Mastercard PayPass locator app on the market, if you click on a location that reports that it has PayPass, it gives you the option to report problems, including if the Site isn't working.
I don't know how fast they are about fixing problems (or if they actually fix them). But hey, it's worth a shot if you frequent the place.

I am in the exact same boat. 2nd time I have tried at McDonalds and I had to pay cash both times.
How do I know if my NFC is bricked? My wallet comes up and says $10 balance on my Google Card... I press the phone to the machine and it kind of just pops up with the Wallet Icon..
I look dumb but I want to get it to work.
Am I bricked? Is there even a way to tell?
I haven't had any problems at CVS except for once when I had my data connection turned off.

I don't think it's for NFC. I believe the one on the bottom left is for NFC. Might be wifi or something else.
I still have the metal contact, does anybody know how I can put it back? Or may be take it to a sprint store to get it fix? But I dont have insurance though.
I haven't notice any problems anyway.

It looks like the NFC antenna. Shouldn't be much of a issue. Everything should work just fine. If you're signal goes weak or can't get lte then have it fixed it shouldn't be too hard. I could fix it at work in 5 mins.

Yes but you need a heat gun. A special heat gun or take your phone apart not something to learn on. If you can't surface mount solder already don't try you will do more damage then good. I wouldn't touch some else's phone much less mine to solder that contact. It's in a tricky and hard place to solder. I've been soldering on surface mount for 7 years and don't know if I could do it.

those are you bluetooth, wifi, etc contacts to the antennas integrated into the back cover. If your bluetooth or wifi start dropping this might a culprit. My bluetooth is usually not functional (I'm waiting on a replacement that is backordered) but when it first started to go out, squeezing the phone together just next to the volume controls would bring it back. here's some articles about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817148

The longer antenna is for LTE I believe. If you take the cover the top right side of the phone with your hand, it loses some dBm, and goes back.
